36 Service Brakes problem of the 2007 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 05/31/2012

The car first started when I had it on cruise control going down the highway at 70mph. I had the air conditioning on and the tach went to 4,000 rpms and the car shut off while going down the highway. The car when sitting idle will idle up and down. When put into reverse or drive the car jumps forward or backwards and you can barely stop it by pressing the brakes. Now when the car is put into reverse and your backing out of a parking space the car will lunge and then turn off.

45 Service Brakes problem of the 2005 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 09/27/2011

Scary car. A couple of times when car is idle/foot on brake the car would surge forward on its own. This is creepy. First time happened when parking in front of a wall. Luckily, I had enough room to not hit the front. I just came home and rolled into parking space. My foot was still on the brake but out of nowhere it just went by itself so my natural response was to brake really hard. It slowed the surging, but dang it! it scared the begezzy out of me. If I wasn't alert, I think that wall would damage the front car. . . Let alone hit someone(s) if they are in front of this idle car. Second time when my husband rolled into the mall's parking space and it did it too. I sat next to him and it was just freaky weird. It happened 3 other times also. Ford better recall on this problem seeing how many complaints are posted online already. I had to look it up online and found a major car magazine stated it was a major problem. If they don't do anything about this, I think I will have to switch to another car maker. This Ford Freestyle 2005 awd limited is a scary car: air conditioner and idle/foot on brake = surging or lunging forward.

46 Service Brakes problem of the 2007 Ford Freestyle

47 Service Brakes problem of the 2006 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 08/09/2011

Car lunged forward with foot firmly on the brake, this also happened when the car was in reverse. This lunging stopped when the brake was applied, this has happened several times since then.

48 Service Brakes problem of the 2005 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 08/05/2011

Vehicle lurching when idling or low speeds. Repeated excessive wear on rear brakes. Front brakes working properly.

49 Service Brakes problem of the 2006 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 06/17/2011

I was approaching an intersection at about 1-5 mph and pressing the brakes, then the car lunged forward and moved 2 to 4 feet (at no point I pressed the gas pedal). After that, the gas pedal did not work, and I had to restart the car to be able to move it again. This all happened at an intersection. I believe this is a very dangerous problem. With the lunge I could have hit a pedestrian. With the need to re-start at the middle of a congested intersection, I could have been hit by a car moving in the opposite direction.

50 Service Brakes problem of the 2006 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 06/15/2011

The car is surging and lunging (see pending investigation from may 2011). Also, when running the a/c it starts to go off and on by itself, then the engine starts to shut off and on, and all gages go to zero, like the car is losing power.

51 Service Brakes problem of the 2007 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 06/15/2011

My Ford 2007 Freestyle was positively, certainly accelerating on it's own. It was at times terrifying. It kept getting worse. It happened in different degrees of severity and length of time. It also happened in two different ways. The first way was when I was either simply driving but predominantly when I began to slow down for a red light or to park. At that very second, the car would literally jump ahead in a sudden, mortifying tremendous acceleration. I would try to restrain it by stepping on the breaks as hard as I could. The car would not respond to the breaks, the thrust was as strong or at times, stronger. Most times it kept going for a bit, but with my heart pounding in fear that I would hit another car or a pedestrian, I would find myself truly off my seat, solely on the break with all my possible strength; and the car would die. When I was at a light and the green came on, I was having to restart the car quickly to keep with traffic flow. Many times, after restarting the car and driving slowly and trying to stay away from other cars, the car would go on, but with a hiccup on and off. Then things would seem normal, but I never knew for how long. The second way in which the car self accelerated, was when I turned it on to start driving. Again the acceleration would be so sudden and I never knew how strongly. Some times I was very close to hitting the car behind me in a parking lot, or anywhere I was parked. I had to take extra, precautions to make absolutely sure, more than usual, than no persons would be even remotely in range of my car when I turned it on, because I never knew, depending on the acceleration force, how far the "jump" would be. This problem kept me in anxiety and uncertainty. I took my car twice to my regular car shop, had to take it to Ford dealer, only place to find the equipment needed. Person there knew about same problem in other Fords.

52 Service Brakes problem of the 2006 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 06/14/2011

We purchased a brand new 2006 Ford Freestyle in March, 2007. On June 14, 2011, and to a lesser extent, periodically since vehicle purchase, the vehicle's engine surged while my foot was on the brake pedal; the vehicle failed to accelerate to normal speed; and, it acted like it didn't want to shift into next gear. The June 14, 2011 occurrence was the worst one, plus, the wrench light came on. Our local Ford dealership diagnosis is that the throttle body needs to be replaced. . . At only 37,200 miles. Repair estimate from the dealership to replace the part is $836. 48. Dealership also determined that an engine mount bracket/gasket needs to be replaced for cost of $424. 00; rear brakes will be needed within 5,00 miles for $374, if new rotors are needed; and, new battery is needed now for a cost of $138. . . All this at only 37,200 miles. We foolishly purchased an extended warranty when we bought the vehicle. Ford tells us that the warranty only covers the power train, and since the throttle body is considered to be electronic, the warranty will not apply. We were led to believe that it was a bumper-to-bumper extended warranty when we agreed to purchase the warranty. We are very unhappy campers! no more extended warranties for us. We believe that Ford should be responsible at least for the throttle body replacement, in full. We are afraid to drive the vehicle now, and even when it is "repaired" we will still be afraid because of the history of the Freestyle problems that we have read about online. Please help! thanks.

53 Service Brakes problem of the 2006 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 06/10/2011

Vehicle will accelerate while foot is on the brake pedal. Happens mostly when backing but will happen also when in drive. Seems to happen as wheel is turned slightly in either direction, but not for sure. Also seems to happen more in very hot weather or after vehicle has been driven for a while. Acceleration is minor to moderate and happens unexpectedly. Ford reprogrammed computer last summer but still occurs. Vehicle is also wearing out right rear brake faster that other brakes.

54 Service Brakes problem of the 2006 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 06/10/2011

My issue started almost a about a year ago. I was in a parking lot waiting for my son and had air conditioner on and we sat for about 30 min. As soon as I pushed brake in and about to put in d we lunged a couple of times and I was able to stop with brake. I tried again and we lunged again. I put in r and we bolted out of spot. Luckily no one was behind us. Finally was able to get in d and then we stalled. I've had the transmission cleaned and fluids replaced, but we have been having the same issue over this past year. The latest episode was when I finally got the car to drive and I was barely moving. I was on a busy road trying to go past 10mph. I am seeing tons of complaints about this same issue and am wondering why this hasn't been solved????? it is obviously a defect. Why wait till someone gets killed and then sues.

55 Service Brakes problem of the 2005 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 06/01/2011

The contact owns a 2005 Ford free style. The contact was driving 20 mph when the wrench failure light illuminated and the engine stalled. The vehicle also experienced abnormally high rpms prior to the failure. The contact also stated that on a separate occasion the brakes were depressed but the vehicle failed to stop. The vehicle was towed to a private mechanic where the mechanic confirmed that the transmission needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was contacted but the vehicle was not repaired. The failure and the current mileages were 120,000.

56 Service Brakes problem of the 2006 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 05/13/2011

My 2006 Ford lunges. It also loses power and cuts off while trying to drive. This happens everywhere and anywhere. Even if my foot is on the brake it will lunge forward or backward it does no discriminate. This happens all the time. It's also worse when the air conditioning is on. This could potentially be a serious situation on the highways and local streets, if the car is just cutting off while driving down the road. Lunging forward/backward could become potentially serious as well. I really hope that Ford takes responsibility for these issues. Especially since they stopped making the Freestyle what 3 yrs later. It seems to me that they realized there was some kind of an issue why else would they quit making it? I have to say other than that major problem of lunging and going through rear brakes the car itself is wonderful and not my first Ford. I love Ford vehicles, unfortunatley I am a little disappointed with this one. If Ford would take responsibility and fix it that would be great! I can't afford to fix it nor get another vehicle. I feel like I have a lemon on my hands.

57 Service Brakes problem of the 2005 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 04/12/2011

Rear brakes on my 2005 Ford Freestyle have gone out again. Have approx. 100,000 miles on the car and this is the 2nd time I have had to replace, not to mention that I have had to replace the tires 5 times on this car. It is an odd size tire so it is hard to find decent ones for the snow and they can be really expensive if you do find them.

58 Service Brakes problem of the 2006 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 10/29/2010

I have always owned Fords however this is by far the scariest Ford car ever and to me the unsafest!! I purchased my Ford Freestyle back in October 2010. Ever since then my car seems to have a mind of its own. When I am completely stopped my car will automatically lunge forward and even stall when I am turning my wheel. I have a 5 year old child who I drive everyday to school in this death trap and it scares me to death. I have tried talking to my Ford dealership about this since the car was like this when I bought it but of course they want me to spend all this money I do not have on repairs. . . After internet research it appears there are hundreds of people that have the same problem with this vehicle. Why isn't anyone doing something about this to protect the consumer? it is very scary and I do not understand why the car is lunging forward and backwards if backing up when my foot is clearly on the brake as well as stalling . I hope someone will do something about it before someone ends up in an accident or even dead because of this!! that would be a serious lawsuit I am sure. This is a serious issue please please do a recall on it now if not for me for the sake of someone's life who is driving one of these unsafe vehicles.

59 Service Brakes problem of the 2005 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 09/20/2010

I bought my 2005 Ford Freestyle new in January 2006. By November 2008 the rear brakes began grinding. I had them replaced at my local Ford dealership; it was still under the 3 year/ 36,000 miles warranty. Now, a year and a half later the brakes are grinding again and need to be replaced. The vehicle has less than 30,000 miles on it but is no longer covered under the 3 year warranty. The brakes shouldn't have to be replaced this often. However, in July 2007 we received a letter from Ford stating that the rear brakes would be covered under the original 3 year/ 36,000 miles warranty. This raises a red flag that Ford knew about the brake issues but did nothing about it, and still hasn't done anything.

60 Service Brakes problem of the 2007 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 07/19/2010

2007 Ford Freestyle surging at idle. Has happened 5 or 6 times lately. Have had two many problems with this car and can not afford to keep fixing.

61 Service Brakes problem of the 2006 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 07/09/2010

My '06 Ford Freestyle has been having problems with surging forward especially when moving slowly back and forth into a parking spot. At times it even stalls. The surge causes the car to rapidly accelerate and I'm forced to slam on the brakes to avoid hitting the car, wall, person, or whatever is in front of me. It usually happens when the ac is on. I have taken the car to a Ford service station on three different occasions and they have been unable to detect the problem. On the first attempt, they could not duplicate my concern. The next two times I went into the car with the technicians and they did experience the surging motion. However, when running the diagnostic on the car, no problems were indicated. Most recently, the electrical system was updated on the car and I was sent home, as the technicians said they drove the car and no longer felt the surging. By the time I exited the highway (5 miles later) the car was surging and threatening to stall out. I have been researching online and have discovered multiple Freestyle owners with the same complaint. Most have indicated that the cause is the throttle body. I have made another appointment to bring in my car tomorrow and have photocopied some of those complaints. If this issue is prevalent in Ford Freestyles, there should be a recall for our vehicles to be repaired at Ford's expense. Driving my 4 year old car should not make me feel like my life is in danger.

62 Service Brakes problem of the 2006 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 07/05/2010

3rd set of back brakes 37623 miles on car 3 1/2 years old. Brakes are dragging fixed once by Ford told it was the last time Ford would pay for it.

63 Service Brakes problem of the 2006 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 07/01/2010

Rear brakes wear out unusually fast, in the first 18,000 miles. Sound Ford will not do anything about this issue either. This is the 2nd time I have had to replace my rear brakes and rotors that were completely ruined in 38,000 miles of usual driving. I have also experienced unusual tire wear. The insides of the tires go bald with in the first 35,000 miles even with routine servicing and rotations.

64 Service Brakes problem of the 2006 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 06/18/2010

My husband was stopped at a red light. All of a sudden the car just went forward through the light, even though he was holding the brake pedal down. Thankfully no cars hit us. We thought perhaps it was just something weird that happened. I continued to drive it and it happened two more times. I called Ford. They told me that there was no recall and I should take it to a Ford dealership to have it tested. The dealership said that they had had this happen on quite a few of their cars, and that even though the computer didn't show anything, they recommended that we have a new throttle put in the car. We did and paid $800. To have it done. We had also talked to a different mechanic who also confirmed that he had quite a few Fords come in with this same problem. Ford told us that they would not pay for it unless there was a recall. They car was not safe to drive, therefore we paid for the repair.

65 Service Brakes problem of the 2007 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 04/01/2010

The rear brakes on our 2007 Ford Freestyle, with 28,000 miles on it are shot. We have read where other are experiencing the same problem and some are being replaced as a warranty item while others, such as us, are being billed for over $300. 00. Brakes should last longer than 28,000 miles. I understand there is an issue of that nature with others that own Ford Freestyles. There is no recall as of yet. Couldn't the bad brakes cause a major accident?.

66 Service Brakes problem of the 2005 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 03/25/2010

My left rear brake heats up and smokes. I have taken rides of less then 10 miles. I will be replacing the brake shoes for the 4th time. I have about 50,000 miles on the car. I'm afraid that on a long trip the wheel will lock up and cause an accident. 2005 Ford Freestyle VIN#[xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

67 Service Brakes problem of the 2006 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 12/30/2009

Throttle body failed twice. Had repaired because vehicle lunged and almost hit a lady at kroger grocery store. Foot was firm on brake. Very dangerous in my opinion . I'm a Ford motor company employee and I've heard this problem from friends at work . Also engine races sometimes.

68 Service Brakes problem of the 2006 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 12/16/2009

When placed in reverse the auto would surge without warning, as if the fuel pedal were applied. This also did it when going from reverse to forward. Had to keep foot firmly on the brake at all times or risk an accident. Car became very difficult to drive when this occurred. At 80,472 miles. Engine check light stayed on after another surge problem that stalled the auto. Ray skillman Ford in greenwood, in determined it was the "throttle body". It was replaced and while the service man drove the car, the entire a/c unit went out. They put a new clutch & compressor. After calling several Ford dealerships, there has been a huge backorder of these throttle body's. Capital city Ford is installing two a day the same with ray skillman Ford.

69 Service Brakes problem of the 2006 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 07/11/2009

I was transporting my children on a hot day. We were idling with the a/c on. The vehicle was not in motion. I had my foot pressed firmly on the brake. The vehicle then lunged forward several feet. There were no impacts or accidents, but as I began to accelerate, the vehicle acted as if it was going to stall. It was sputtering and kept lunging as if I had removed my foot from the clutch the check engine / wrench light came on and the vehicle died. I tried to restart the vehicle multiple times, and it did eventually turn back on, but the vehicle was sluggish and continued lunging. I brought the vehicle to our local Ford dealer, jackson Ford-Mercury tag #540, as it was still under warranty. They checked the air conditioner and found nothing wrong. I took the vehicle back to the same dealer a short time later for the same problem and again they could find no problems. As the season changed, the problem cleared up. We were no longer using the a/c. The following summer, same conditions, same problem. I took it to a different Ford dealership big valley Lincoln Ford Mercury ro # 625097 and explained the problem and provided the repair tag number. After performing a mult-ipoint inspection, not once, but twice, and a diagnostic hvac system check, they also could find no problem to repair. Concerned that our warranty was getting ready to expire, we asked them to document the incident. We've taken the vehicle to many local mechanics as well. I am unsure of which parts are actually faulty because the vehicle has never been able to be diagnosed. We don't utilize the a/c because it causes the vehicle to stall and fails to cool the air properly anyway. I believe my vehicle is encountering the same defect as many of the others described up here and I think that Ford should repair the defect, as I and many other consumers purchased these vehicles in good faith.

70 Service Brakes problem of the 2006 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 06/19/2009

Anti lock brake pump defective, luckily discovered before serious injury. Back brakes already replaced one time on Ford 2006 Freestyle. No dashboard indicators ever came on, only realized the problem because the brake pedal did not feel right while using brakes. Ford needs to check this out and issue a recall before someone is injured. We were just lucky.
