1 Steering problem of the 2005 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 03/04/2021

I was sold a vehicle without being told that there was a recall. Instead he told me it was just some rattling that was coming from something loose and not important. Its rattling like crazy under my car. I looked up recalls for it and there is an important recall that needs to be fixed on it. Please. It can harm my newborn child and melt wires and is gonna cost so much money that I don't have to fix it. This is my only car. Please. Its a 2005 Ford Freestyle and there is a recall for it on exactly what its been doing. Everytime I drive it feels like it's gonna fall apart and inside the cab is getting hott and harmful fumes are coming into the cab. Its dangerous. The heat shield is broken I guess.

2 Steering problem of the 2007 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 07/18/2018

Car accelerating when ac in on and after ac has been of after that 1 day use. Ac not working property. Sensor issues. Electrical issues, example window no longer rolls down. Taken it to different mechanics but they can't find the problem. Know it's turning off all in a sudden and having issues with the car brakes to kick in. Had that check but they said everything is good, brakes and etc. . . . Have already put around $5,000 and still not getting it to work safely. Also stearing wheel gets stuck as if you can't turn the wheels on the car and then turns of after seconds.

3 Steering problem of the 2007 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 06/15/2017

My daughter was driving the car at the time and felt a large bang then shuddering with the vehicle becoming difficult to steer and losing control, veering off the road edge. She regained control and brought the car to a safe stop. She called me for assistance and I found the rear sub frame is inferior in construction and had extensive perforation inconsistent with the rest of the vehicle. This caused the rear control arm to separate from the sub frame. The rear wheel became unstable causing the vehicle to lose control. I have contacted Ford on the issue, they have recalls on the escape and windstar for the same problem. I have also found the same reports from other Freestyle owners. Ford refused to assist on the matter. This is a serious safety issue. This occurred at relatively low speed approx. 35 miles per our. Had this occurred at highway speeds my daughter may have been injured or killed.

5 Steering problem of the 2005 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 03/17/2017

While driving 80mph (posted 80 speed limit) the car started to glide left and right with little turning of the wheel. It also happens while going 15-25mph. The feeling is a coasting feeling, like you have no control of correcting it with the steering. Several complaints online already of the same Ford owners experiencing the same issue.

7 Steering problem of the 2006 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 06/03/2016

Vehicle was discovered to have severe rust on front frame assembly drivers side during routine maintenance on today's date. It appears this has been an issue for some time and has just became painfully apparent. The corrosion/rust/deterioration occurs directly below an area where the air conditioning system dispenses later/condensation. Erosion to structural support is so bad it has eaten away bottom, sides and top of frame assembly. Sometimes known as an engine cradle. In order to replace, the engine must be moved and other front end components removed from vehicle. It is the opinion of complainant that this rust issue could result in a dangerous condition for the driver of the vehicle, the occupants of the vehicle as well as other motorists on the road and the general public. It is also the opinion of the complainant that this rust issue could result in the structural ability to suspend the engine. Possibly resulting in misalignment of key components or moving parts and could result in excessive wear and damage to other components of the automobile. It is also the opinion of the complainant that the rust issue and weakening of front end support members could possibly impact steering, tire life, tire pattern on roadway during hazardous conditions, etc. Ford motor company appears to have similar rust/chassis/frame issues on other models of vehicles after doing quick search online regarding this issue and comparing photographs. Ford motor company has issued recalls for other rust/frame/chassis issues, but not for the Ford Freestyle.

8 Steering problem of the 2005 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 04/07/2016

Driving on highway, heard loud pop (clap sound). Then dash light came on and car steering wheel began to lock up. Tried to flush transmission fluid and replace os sensor from Ford and now it will not shift into first gear.

9 Steering problem of the 2005 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 02/15/2016

Power steering doesnt work well.

10 Steering problem of the 2005 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 04/23/2015

I purchased the 2005 Ford Freestyle used. Issues: (1) shortly after purchasing the transmission light came on, then I took it to a transmission shop, who replaced the fluid, which seemed to fix the problem. (2) random surges of power, which almost resulted in a few accidents and was severely frightening (corrected before a recall) (3) this past winter problems with shutting the front doors, then with out warning ( with two children in the back sets ) the back passenger door few open when I turned the corner. The children screamed, I was thankful that a child was not severally injured and then, I had call someone to pick us up. I called Ford and was told I was the only complaint! later at a children's recreation, I parked next to a woman with children driving the same model. I asked her if she experienced door issues, she stated both doors flew open with the children in the back seats, and stated her husband lubed the doors down. (4) now the transmission will randomly decide not to move, but if I turn the free style on and off it might go into gear. No transmission light on indicated an issue. My opinion is the 2005 Ford Freestyle was created to market toward families, the design and marketing worked, but as a result several families are now in danger.

11 Steering problem of the 2005 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 11/01/2014

2005 Ford Freestyle sel fwd - 116k miles, very good condition, 2nd owner. On 11/1, I requested mechanic to do a full inspection on the car, no know issues, but just to check it over before winter. Upon inspection, mechanic found the engine cradle subframe to be rusted/rotted beyond repair, and said car was not safe to drive. Only this cradle showed significant rust, in fact the original exhaust system is still on the car (that is most shocking, the exhaust out lasted this subframe). As I stated the car is in fantastic shape, and runs great. We either had to fix or scrap the car as it was unsafe to drive. Estimates from dealers to replace were around $3000. We ended up using a local body shop we trust to replace the subframe with a used / rust free one for $1150. I retained the subframe and called Ford customer service also to issue a complaint. I realize the car is 10 years old with over 100k miles on it, but given its great condition (if you saw pictures you would understand) there is no acceptable reason for a subframe, that holds all the suspension and steering to be rusted/rotted to the point of being unsafe to drive.

12 Steering problem of the 2006 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 05/13/2014

I'm writing again. I've had a throttle body issue twice. The customer satisfaction program that Ford did was a temporary fix. Ford knew this. Ford dealership mechanics have told them it doesn't solve the issue. Less than a year after I had to the c. S. P. On my car I was stranded on side of road only to find out it was the throttle body I could have it cleaned and reprogrammed again at my cost which was nearly the same cost to replace. I had it replaced at my cost. In my situation the 1st time my car lunged forward toward wall of my home. I had to use both feet and all my weight to stop it. The 2nd time I lost power and control . All while trying to get out of heavy traffic. I could not get my car off the road and in a safe position. After this problem my ac will not work unless accelerating. And my motor went out. All this before I hit 100,000 miles. I've called Ford and filed complaints with NHTSA. All to no avail. Ford is replacing the same part for other vehicles at a full recall and no cost to the consumer my VIN# is not assoc. With recall. I feel Ford and NHTSA is ignoring the complaints from consumers this is a major safety issue. I feel that we consumers that have this problem need to file a class action lawsuit against Ford & NHTSA. Neither is addressing this serious safety issue. Ford needs to take responsibility & NHTSA needs to force them to. Continuing to ignore this issue is going to cause hearings on capital hill & a bad name for both. I will be following up with my state representative & my congress person. I intend to see that both Ford & NHTSA stop ignoring the thousands of complaints regarding this serious safety issue. If you investigate you'll find newer models than mine have the same issue. Same part same part number, mine and others of my year are not recalled while the others are & replaced. Someone better take this serious.

13 Steering problem of the 2006 Ford Freestyle

Vehicle surges forward unexpectendly.

14 Steering problem of the 2005 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 03/10/2014

The contact owns a 2005 Ford Freestyle. The contact stated that while driving 55 mph, the vehicle became very hard to maneuver. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who stated that the steering u-joint needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. 15 Steering problem of the 2005 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 03/06/2014

When driving the car the steering would catch and it pulled me toward the ditch line and oncoming traffic. This is very dangerous.

16 Steering problem of the 2005 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 03/03/2014

Vehicle exprierenced loss of steering due to corrosion to the steering shaft.

17 Steering problem of the 2005 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 06/01/2013

Where to begin. . . . The brakes are shot. Don't work at all. During the summer and fall the car will randomly go into "failsafe mode" and just stop. It has to be turned completely off for several minutes before attempting to turn back on and will generally do this up to 8 times before I just shut it off and leave it until the next day. During these months it will also get a mind of it's own and just leap forward. I have to stop 2 car lengths behind any car in front of me when I'm coming to a stop, otherwise it will lunge forward (even though I have my foot firmly applied on the brake) and hit the car in front of me. Oh, and will jump curbs, hit garage doors, all that good stuff too when it gets this surge. Then, during the winter months the door latch gets stuck and the car doors are literally frozen open. I can't drive anywhere with two small children and car doors that won't shut. Oh, and my vehicle wasn't included in the recall so I can't get it fixed. Oh and did I mention the brake system doesn't work? like won't hold brake fluid, air is all in the lines, and hardly no brakes. Have you ever tried driving with no brakes?? it sucks! and forget driving on the highway with my kids in this car. I don't trust it at all!!.

18 Steering problem of the 2006 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 05/15/2013

Our steering is locking up and the battery light stays on and sometimes the doors wont latch the steering is very dangerous it locks up and you cant keep it on the road.

19 Steering problem of the 2007 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 08/01/2012

I have recently purchased the 2007 Ford Freestyle and have noticed at times when I put it into drive or reverse it lunges without my pressing the acceleration. This is very concerning because it feels unsafe and likely to cause an accident!.

20 Steering problem of the 2005 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 07/18/2012

1. Pulling into parking space, vehicle surged forward, steering was turned sharply at the time and foot on brake 2. Pulling in garage and vehicle surged while foot on brake.

21 Steering problem of the 2005 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 07/09/2012

My 2005 limited edition Freestyle has a few issues that I am very concerned about. My throttle is having major issues. The car will surge forward with no warning when I am at a complete stop. It also has caused it to have a lot of difficultly accelerating when in motion and starting the ignition. I'm afraid that it will surge forward and cause me to hit something or someone. I've read online about people that have had this issue where it gets so bad that they've even lost all acceleration while driving down the highway and one person who hit something in his garage sending it flying through the garage wall. My husband has tried cleaning out the throttle with no success. We bought the car used less than a year ago with no warranty and this problem has been getting progressively worse over the last few months.

22 Steering problem of the 2007 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 06/06/2012

Parked in parking garage. When backing up, car lurched and ran into another vehicle that was backing up. I was in reverse when the other car backed up. Foot on brake and car lurched into other car. No personal injuries than goodness. Since that time, it has lurched in both forward and reverse. I originally thought that somehow my foot hit the gas pedal and could not figure out how I was doing this. I also thought that maybe the floor mat had somehow bound the gas pedal, but, I checked and it is not the problem. Sensor replaced on car as mechanic thought that this might be causing the problem. It was fine after that for about 1,500 miles and problem has started again. The problem seems to be made worse if the temperature is over 90 outside or if the car is sitting and idling or operating at low speeds. I have been lucky that no other property damage and/or personal injuries.

23 Steering problem of the 2005 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 06/04/2012

Car was parked in rear of apartment complex. When I put it in reverse it lunged back without my foot on the gas, smashing the rear of the car into the apartment building wall. I did have a seat belt on but the impact caused severe neck trauma as my head was turned at the time of impact. I shut the car off. Approximately an hour later I started the car, put it in drive, and as I attempted to drive the car home, it would "lose power", the wrench light would come on, and the car would have no transmission power. I had to pull the car over, turn it off and restart it. This happened repeatedly. The local Ford dealership incorrectly diagnosed and charged me a repair for cleaning the sensor - and refused to refund me my diagnostic charges even though my car was not fixed. I did my own research to learn it was a throttle body issue. The service manager stated they would apply the credit towards replacing the throttle body. . . . But not all the charges. They were horrible to deal with in customer service after completely failing to fix my car and charging me almost $500.

24 Steering problem of the 2005 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 05/21/2012

When in reverse or drive if turning the sterring wheel the car take off and you have to but the brake on hard to stop car. This happens 95% of the time.

25 Steering problem of the 2006 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 09/12/2011

On 9/12/11 my 2006 Ford Freestyle experienced several failures. Driving through a parking lot and my wrench and emission lights came on. Took to mechanic and he diagnosed complete failure of transmission, and that my power steering was whining as any turns were made. Contacted Ford motor and the dealership and was told that while not uncommon, there was nothing they could do. My car has essentially died at 160,000 miles as the cost of repairs are greater than the value of the car.

26 Steering problem of the 2007 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 07/08/2011

Vehicle surges forward whether the vehicle is in drive or reverse. I have had the throttle body replaced in 2011. I have had to replace brakes at 30,000 miles. The driver side back door will not lock with the key remote. On July 6 2012 with ac on driving slowly out of a parking lot car would not go. It started up and I went about 20ft and car just died. On July 10, 2012 took it to dealer in virginia beach, va. On Tuesday, July 12, 2012 I was told it was something to do with the powertrain and the cost would be $1600. I went ballastic and asked to speak to manager and then asked for number to Ford company. I talked with someone there explained my financial situation and was given a claim number and said someone would get back to me in four (4) days about financial assistance, which is not what I was looking for. I told the Ford rep, that I had been looking on the internet about all the complaints about my 2007 Freestyle and asked why there was not a recall on this car. On Wednesday, July 11, 2012 dealer called and said the problem was not the $1600. 00 deal but a pigtail (whatever that is) at the tune of $600. 00. I am afraid of this car and I am looking to get rid of it as soon as possible.

My husband has tried cleaning out the throttle with no success. We bought the car used less than a year ago with no warranty and this problem has been getting progressively worse over the last few months . We are also having a problem with water in the car. We've had puddles on the back passenger floor and front driver side. I do not have a moon/sunroof. Water has actually pooled out from the car onto the ground when I've opened the door. The doors will be dry and we can't figure out how the water is getting in the car. I'm very concerned about mold as both me and my daughter are allergic to it. There is also a whirling noise that happens when you turn the wheel. We noticed this right after buying the car and the dealer looked at it and said there wasn't anything that could be done to fix it that it's just a noise this model car makes. The first 2 issues seem to have affected a very large group of people and I don't know why Ford hasn't recalled the cars as this could lead to severe injury or death.

28 Steering problem of the 2005 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 06/03/2010

Riding down road and car started lunging and trying to go on its own. Then transaxle light came on. Car would then only go 40mph but it would rev up and tac at 5 or more. Took it to americus sunbelt Ford, they said it needed transaxle fluid and put some in. Light went off and it worked. Very dangerous to be in road and car won't go fast enough to get out of the way. The a/c quit right after this. Had a/c fixed and it was ok. Next the throttle body in June 2012 messed up and I had it fixed at sunbelt Ford and they charged me almost $900. Ran for a while then Ford had a recall on throttle body and I took it in and they cleaned it but would not reimburse me for what I paid to get fixed. May 2014 a/c compressor went out again got it fixed and on July 13, 2014 in atlanta GA on interstate 85 around norcross with the traffic flying 75 80 mph by me jerking along at 40mph and the transaxle light came on. It was extremely scary since I had my child and husband with me when this happened and we were not at an exit to get off but when we limped to one I turned into a parking lot and it quit going up the small hill. It would not go forward or backward therefore we were in harms way again. With the help of strangers we pushed it to safety. I had to have it towed 169 miles back to my home and the mechanic says that it is full of transmission fluid but it will not go. This is a safety hazard and an accident waiting to happen. Ford should have to take these cars off the road and pay me for all the repairs and a car that won't go.

29 Steering problem of the 2007 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 04/01/2010

My vehicle has 110,000 miles on it. It has for the past 4 years jolting/launcing forward. It sounds like an airplane. It stalls when the weather is hot. Waiting patiently for a recall, feel that will be driving down the road and transmission will fall to the ground. Worst car I have every owned. I have seen many complaints on this vehicle. Have also had at on point trouble turning the steering wheel. Thinking should trade car in, but recently paid the car off.

30 Steering problem of the 2007 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 01/20/2010

How many complaints have to be made before a recall is made. Does someone have to die. For over 2 years, I have asked my Ford dealership about recalls on my vehicle because I have the same problems as the other complainants. I had to replace my transmission after my warranty ran out but I complained about it well before it ran out. No one seemed to be able to figure out what was happening until after the warranty ran out. I made several complaints about the performance which may have not been recorded under my VIN. My complaint date and mileage is inaccurate because I don't know when my first complaint was. My VIN history will tell it all if proper records were kept. My throttle signal just came on today and I have to take it back in to see about that. We need a recall now! don't wait until it's too late!!!.

31 Steering problem of the 2005 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 08/01/2009

When I start my 2005 Freestyle and put the a/c on or put the car in drive or reverse and use the steering wheel the car accelerates by itself and tries to takeoff.

32 Steering problem of the 2006 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 05/19/2009

This happened 3 times before they were able to do anything at the Ford dealership because the lights would be off by the time I was able to reach the dealership, and their response was always technician was unable to duplicate symptom. While driving at 50mph on the interstate there was an intermittent idle surge while driving and then a loud "clunking" noise and then the transmission lost power and the vehicle crawled to a halt. There was no acceleration even though the engine revved up. The steering wheel became difficult to maneuver so I was unable to even get it into the emergency lane. I was stuck in the middle lane of the interstate with my child in the car. The check engine light, the wrench light for the cvt transmission, and the passenger air bag light also came on. I had to turn the car off, put it in park, and then restart the car, when I reached the dealership they were finally able to retrieve several fault codes. They performed an r&r transmission and overhaul. This happened 2 other times at (77004 miles, after shifting into park at 0 mph. They replaced a faulty throttle body for this repair- and then at 77238 miles-they replaced the alternator for this repair). It's beginning to happen again. This was and still is a dangerous situation. I now have 3 kids. I thank god we weren't struck from behind while driving on the interstate. I am terrified to drive the vehicle to long distance locations or drive on any parkway, highway, or interstate because it took a while for the vehicle to start up long enough to get it to the dealership that was only 4 miles away.
