Three problems related to automatic transmission park/neutral start switch have been reported for the 1998 Ford Taurus. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Vehicle having shifting problems. Vehicle transmission failed while in the middle of an intersection. Transmission failed due to electronic failure. Mechanic stated due to defect. From manufactuer.
I was at a stop when the engine lunged ahead and died,at the time I had my foot on the brake. It repeated this 3 other times. The repiring dealer said the ground cable for the pcm was lose causing the engine to lose control. The lunging was quite violent.
Key was in igintion with engine turned off when a 4-year old child moved shift lever from park to neutral without applying brakes, causing vehicle to roll.
