1 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 12/16/2018

After exiting the highway, braking to stop a red light, the car proceeded to slowly accelerate on its own. After letting it go for a while, it topped out around 52mph, as if the cruise control was working on its own. I kept pressing off, but that wouldn't work. The car stopped revving rpms when I put it in neutral.

2 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 02/12/2016

Sitting at stop light foot on brake vehical accelerates on its on. This is a problemi have experianced before on a 1976 mecury wagon. Its the cruise control. Ford was told then and did nothing but charge me for the inspection saying nothing was wrong. It happened again so I disconected the cruise control. Now its happening on a 2004 Taurus. If I was the one driving it wouldnt concern me but my x-wife panics easy so will disconect her cruise control. Ford needs to fix this before someone dies.

3 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 09/23/2014

When I drive, the gas pedal will get stuck and either stay at the speed without me setting cruise control or it may accelerate on its own. To get it loose, I have to jiggle the gas pedal (which can be very dangerous especially while driving), this usually stops the problem but I'm concerned that someday it will stop working and I won't be able to control this anymore. If I put the car in park or neutral it increases the rpm from 1 to 3 or 4. Also if the rpm are increased while in park it makes it super hard to shift to drive and is stressful to my transmission.

4 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 09/02/2014

I was accelerating after being stopped at a red light and noticed the car kept accelerating after taking my foot off the pedal. I applied the brake and it continued to accelerate after removing the brake. I put the vehicle in neutral and it went up to 3000rpm. I put it back in drive and the car corrected once drive was re-engaged. The cruise control in the car will not turn on and if it does it will not set an acceleration. The problem was noted earlier in the year but pushed off as a fluke. Then after doing research I see that most Taurus' have this same problem. When I contacted Ford they will not fix the problem because there is no recall. This is a huge safety concern and should be issued a recall. Perhaps if there is an accident there will be more investigation into the problem.

5 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 06/16/2014

The contact owns a 2004 Ford Taurus. The contact stated that while driving 60 mph, the vehicle suddenly accelerate independently without any warnings. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic. The technician diagnosed that the cruise control disconnected and became lodge on the throttle. As a result, the cruise control needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was repaired. The failure mileage was 148,000 and the current mileage was 148,035.

6 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 03/14/2014

Driving on interstate and the cruise control started speeding up would not stop and when brakes applied it continued to rev the engine. I stopped the auto and it was still racing and squealing tires. Turned vehicle off then sat for awhile turned engine on and it took off again with engine racing and tires squealing as I sat in parking lot with foot on break. Finally after sitting for some time the cruise no stopped working all together and I am able to drive car but cruise no longer works and the gas pedal sticks at times now and I have to double tap to release.

7 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 02/03/2014

The car jumps when stopped at a light. You have to leave plenty of room between cars or it will jump into a car. Also, we have had to replace the alternator and battery several times. The alternator was 3 times and the battery 5 times. All of the sudden out cruise control went out and after that is when the jumping started. Hard to start and it jumps while idling in park as well as all other gears. Transmission replace 4 years ago.

8 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 01/24/2014

Every once in a while, the throttle in my 2004 Ford Taurus ses will stick and I have to tap the gas a little bit to make it unstick, and also when I turn on cruise control, on the dash it lights up, but cruise control doesn't engage.

9 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 12/13/2013

Vehicle accelerating on its own and gets stuck. Unable to stop car, have to slam on brakes and put the car in neutral. Car continues to accelerate and lifting the gas pedal with my foot does not stop the problem. Had iac motor replaced, throttle position sensor, and egr valve replaced but none of that helped the problem. Car seems to be stuck in cruise control or something and I am unable to stop the acceleration.

10 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 08/19/2013

I'm driving down the freeway at 60 mph and tap on the brakes to slow down and once I let my foot off the brake, with my foot off the gas pedal, the car continues to accelerate. Tried just about everything. Turning cruise control on and off, putting it in neutral, tapping the brakes, still continued to accelerate and randomly stopped once I applied the brakes for the 5th time. Extremely dangerous not having control of your own vehicle.

11 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 08/08/2013

When driving said vehicle it's speed increases on it's own. When you break the engine's rpms race to a very high level. At this point you need to put the vehicle in neutral and/or park and tap the accelarator a few times to bring the rpms to an idle state. I had this problem "repaired" about a year ago at my local Ford dealership but the problem has returned. Also, my cruise control stopped wotking shortly after the "repairs" were made.

12 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 06/17/2013

I was going down a back road at 20 mph. My car accelerated up to 35 by itself. I took my foot off of the pedal at the car kept accelerating. I pressed the brake and the car slowed down but I felt a great deal of power, like the car wanted to keep accelerating. As soon as I took my off the break the accelerated. I had to tap the accelerate pedal all the way down very quickly and it stopped. A few days later my husband and I were driving on the highway and I went to use my cruise control and it would not engage. At the present time the cruise control still does not work and the car is still accelerating on it's own.

13 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 04/04/2013

I was making a pass on the highway one evening on my way home from work and starting out at 45mph I accelerated up to 55mph and completed the pass. The acceleration time as brief but when I took my foot off the pedal the engine kept accelerating and maintained a 2500 - 3500 rpm. Cruise control was not on! being that I've had this happen before when I was in a major city I knew I had to pull over and restart the car, hit the gas pedal a few times and usually it goes away. This time I could not because I was doing 65mph now and quickly approaching +70mph. So I calmly put the breaks on ever so slightly to keep my speed in a reasonable range and started to mess with the cruse control, turning it on and off, coast and accelerate and turning it off again. None of this worked. It wouldn't even accelerate from the cruise controls! but finally buy some luck after I hit the off button on the cruise control in panic, the acceleration pedal popped back up onto my foot where I had it resting. Disaster averted! come to find others who are driving the same vehicle (year and model) in my company experienced this identical issue. One incident actually left the vehicle totaled but thank god our associate was unharmed. I feel that this being a popular car people should be aware of this issue before lives are lost.

14 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 03/04/2013

Driving my vehicle up an incline near my home and at the top I let off the accelorator. Vehicle continued to accelerate. I pressed the off button on cruise control (in case it was on for some reason) and also pressed the brakes. The car slowed but as soon as I let off the break it sped up again. I was not far from home so I stayed on the break until the turn at my neighborhood. After I turned I had to wait for the gates to open so I let off the brakes a bit but the car would jump forward. I turned in as slowly as I could and before turning into my drive where my son and his friends were playing in the yard I stopped as much as I could and while I had my left foot on the break pulled on the accelorator with my right. There was a change in the engine sound and I slowly pulled into the driveway. This has never occured before. We bought the car in 2008. Is there any sort of fix??.

15 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 12/10/2012

Random throttle sticking, cruise control stopped working.

16 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 07/26/2012

I have a 2004 Ford Taurus with almost 70,000 miles on it, and now it has a stuck throttle. On 6/29/2012 I noticed that my cruise control was not working. I began driving the vehicle again on July 18 and starting on July 26 I noticed on the highway that it was accelerating itself without pressing down on the accelerator pedal. Upon turning the car on to drive home from work, the problem was instantly apparent again. The engine will rev itself up to 3000+rpm while in park, and I had to completely press down the brakes to get it to slow down at stop lights and then would put it in park (as a safety precaution). When the light would turn green shifting into drive would make the car jump instantly. Reading of the investigation of the Ford 2005 Taurus and the symptoms that other drivers have had, I am 100% convinced that I am experiencing the same issue. I plan on towing the car to a Ford dealership soon for repair.

17 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 03/21/2012

2004 Taurus - approx. 62500 miles - cruise control has not worked for several weeks. Light came on but it did not engage. 3/21/12 - tonight on the way home on the highway - the car accelerated to 60 mph w/out foot on the pedal. Tapping pedal did not help. Had to put car in neutral to break/stop/pull over but the car rpms were reving the whole time. Taking it in for service on 3/22/12. Reporting this because I see this seems to be a common complaint.

18 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 03/16/2012

Vehicle accelerates on its own, causing it to cruise around 50-60mph without any pressure on the throttle. When this happens, dropping the vehicle into neutral causes the engine to rev high. When shut off and started again, problem still persists. Has noticeably occurred on three different instances. Might be similar to a current NHTSA investigation regarding "sticky accelerators" on Tauruses. The cruise control on the vehicle stopped working on the car approximately a year ago, and the problem has occurred since then.

19 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 02/18/2012

Starting approximately a month ago my throttle started getting stuck on my car. I was driving down the highway and when I took my foot off of the gas peddle, the speed slowed down some, but then it acted as though the cruise control was on and the throttle was stuck. I was pressing the brake but the throttle was still engaged. Even when I was at a complete stop, the throttle was still engaged and the engine racing. Several times I had to put the car in neutral and/or stomp on the gas pedal several times to get the throttle to release. This doesn't happen all the time but is an intermittent problem.

20 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 01/22/2012

While driving down the road upon slowing down before making a turn accelerator would stick as if it was in cruise control mode. Upon pumping the gas pedal the pedal would become unstuck. Cruise control mode now no longer works in vehicle. The has happened on two different occasions once while making a turn and once while pulling into the parking lot.

21 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 09/07/2011

The gas pedal was stuck . I free it by re pressing the gas pedal a number of times. This has happen twice over 5 months. Also I checked from news report about the cruise control and found that my control does not function at all.

22 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 07/19/2011

Just saw this that you were investigating on 2005-06 Ford Taurus models in local paper for similar complaint. My complaint is for the cruise control or throttle control on my Ford Taurus 2004. My cruise control stopped working. After that, sometimes my car would just lock on usually at 40 to 60 mph as far as acceleration and eventually disengage after a period of time after pressing gas pedal or I would shut my car off to reset/reboot. It happened many times, but luckily no accidents, just a lot of wear and tear on brakes. I did mention this phenomenon several years ago to local dealer when my cruise went out and they said nothing unusual was reported and no recalls at the time. [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

23 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 06/15/2011

When I start my car, it revs high, up to about 2000-3000 rpms. While sitting still at a stop sign or red light it will idle around 1200 rpms. While driving it will just accelerate or if I take my foot off the gas it will stay at current speed or increase. I can pump the pedal and it will jump up to 3000 rpms or sometimes it will cause the throttle to kick back and I can feel the pedal bump my foot. No matter the driving conditions or terrain it will do this everytime I drive my car. Sometimes it will idle too low but most of the times it idles high or overrevs when im sitting still or pull in and shift into park. This problem has occurred daily since the problem has started, also this whole time my cruise control will not engage.

24 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 03/02/2011

The contact owns a 2004 Ford Taurus. The contact stated that while driving with the cruise control activated at 50 mph, the cruise control disengaged independently yet the vehicle continued to increase in speed. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer and the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was unknown and the current mileage was 100,000.

25 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2011

While driving, if the ac is on, the car will sometimes accelerate on its own. It will rev up to 3000-3500 rpms and maintain for awhile and eventually stop accelerating. Possibly related, the cruise control turns on, but a cruising speed cannot be set. This happens multiple times.

26 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 11/27/2010

The contact owns a 2004 Ford Taurus. The contact stated that the vehicle would abnormally accelerate when driving at any speed or when at a complete stop with the brakes depressed. On multiple occasions, the vehicle abnormally accelerated to 50 mph without depressing the accelerator pedal. The vehicle was taken to a local mechanic numerous times for the failure. The mechanic replaced the throttle sensor and the cruise control was disconnected, but the failure persisted and the vehicle continued to abnormally accelerate. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 100,000 and the current mileage was 130,000.

27 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 08/23/2010

Gas pedal sticks and car accelerates. Cruise control stopped working.

28 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 08/09/2010

The contact owns a 2004 Ford Taurus. The contact stated that when traveling with the cruise control set at various speeds, the vehicle would independently accelerate intermittently. The vehicle was neither diagnosed for the failure nor repaired. The current and failure mileage was 97,000.

29 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 05/08/2007

The contact owns a 2004 Ford Taurus. While driving 55 mph, the vehicle's cruise control failed to activate. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who stated that the cable for the cruise control was bad and the connector failed. The repair parts were not covered under the warranty. The engine size was unknown. The current and failure mileages were 56,219.

30 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2006

I have a 2004 Ford Taurus and around 2006 the throttle sometimes accelerates and sticks on its own. The cruise control also stopped working around this time. When I was driving I would notice the rpm's going up and not coming down, so I would have to put the car in neutral and rev the engine. This is happening more frequently. I have asked multiple mechanics to help with this problem but no one has had a clue about this or how to fix it, including classic Ford in mentor, ohio.
