Driving down the road straight, our car made a pop sound and suddenly lurched and steering was impaired. Car was taken to the nearest dealership where they found the engine cradle/front sub frame had rusted through internally causing the sway bar to break away and it had perforated around the mount for the control arm. We were extremely fortunate the control arm didn't completely drop out causing an accident. Failure is almost identical to the Ford escape subframe recall. Dealer technician said he has replaced a lot of these engine cradles in the Taurus x's for the same failure (some worse than ours, completely rusted in half etc. ). Lack of sufficient paint inside of the cradles causing premature failure is a major safety concern. I would not be surprised if there are accidents reported for this concern. I have requested the engine cradle from the dealership after it is removed for photographic evidence.
I was driving home on city streets when the power steering went out. Car became almost impossible to turn, even using all my strength. I could not have reacted to any obstacle that suddenly presented itself, and I could hardly make turns, even at very low speeds. It was a dangerous situation.

Car has around 87,000 miles. While leaving the driveway the wheel became very hard to turn, as if the power steering went out. The steering is on and off with the power steering. Took it to private mechanic and was told the power steering needs to be replaced at a cost of $1200. Really sucks because we just bought the car about 1000 miles ago. After looking on line I find this is a common problem, why isn't this a recall?.
There are times when turning the steering wheel, I have a very hard time. I am over 6', and weigh 230 lbs. My wife is smaller, and she has one heck of a time turning the steering wheel. After reading problems other people have had, I decided to file a complaint. It is not safe. I believe a recall is in order for Ford to take care of this problem, not the owners of the vehicle.
When turning from either a parked or stopped position the steering feels as though it is stuck in whatever direction I am steering and I have to help the steering go back into a straight position this I feel is a huge safety issue because I not only drive this vehicle back and forth to work I also have children that ride in it as well. Needs to be addressed and fixed at the manufacturers expense if not and there is an accident that results in a fatality there is a huge lawsuit coming your way Ford.
The contact owns a 2008 Ford Taurus. Upon backing out of the garage and the driveway, the steering wheel became extremely difficult to turn left and right without warning. The contact had to apply force to the steering wheel. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer who diagnosed that the steering gears needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. Left turn from a stop, out of subdivision entrance. While turning, steering became extremely difficult. Immediately tried to get vehicle of the road. Before totally off the road, steering returned to normal. Started back into traffic and immediately seized again briefly, returning to normal. This was also accompanied by a grinding noise. Immediately returned home. Thankfully it was a Sunday and traffic wasn't heavy, as this happened on a well traveled highway through our town. I had one of my children with me. Mechanic was called, vehicle not taken to shop yet. This issue is the most filed complaint on this site, and an absolute safety issue!!!! why is there not a recall??? the following was taken directly from this site: "what is a safety-related defect? the united states code for motor vehicle safety (title 49, chapter 301) defines motor vehicle safety as ¿the performance of a motor vehicle or motor vehicle equipment in a way that protects the public against unreasonable risk of accidents occurring because of the design, construction, or performance of a motor vehicle, and against unreasonable risk of death or injury in an accident, and includes nonoperational safety of a motor vehicle. ¿ a defect includes any defect in performance, construction, a component, or material of a motor vehicle or motor vehicle equipment. ¿ generally, a safety defect is defined as a problem that exists in a motor vehicle or item of motor vehicle equipment that: poses an risk to motor vehicle safety, and may exist in a group of vehicles of the same design or manufacture, or items of equipment of the same type and manufacture. " steering issues don't pose a risk to vehicle safety? all the same complaints don't show a problem may exist in a group of vehicles of the same design or manufacture? in addition, this failure seems to happen when there are low miles on the odometer.
I was backing out of the driveway and I was trying to turn the steering wheel and I could not do so. Finally it did turn. While driving I was having difficulty steering. I was coming off an exit which was very curvy and I almost could not control the steering of the car.
It slowly got difficult to steer and got progressively worse.
I was starting to enter the highway and my steering started to tighten up. By the time I got onto the hway, I couldn't turn left at all. Luckily, I could still turn right. By the time I got off the highway, I couldn't steer at all. Was told by the mechanic I took it to it was a common problem with the Ford Taurus. I wasquoted $1200 for repairs. I am a retired widow living on a fixed income, so I am unsure where to go from here. I will file a complaint with Ford next. My warranty expired in 2012.

My steering tightened up to the point of almost being locked. I had to come to a complete stop so I would not hit the car in the intersection which I was turning in to. I have had several issues similar to this but it is becoming more frequent and serious.
The steering effort became very great in making turning right from a standstill. It requires intense effort when moving from a parked area. Steering is effected to a degree when at travel speed but less so in straight operation. All right turning is effected and requires tremendous effort. The same effect in either forward or reverse motion.
Steering is very difficult to use. While driving , steering will go from normal ability to turn steering wheel to very hard. Nearly caused an accident! took car to private mechanic and was told steering rack had to be replaced. This cost over $1100 to replace!.
Car has a tendancy to drift right or left while traveling. More pronunced drift while stopping. Excessive tire wear. Dealer inspection indicates gears in gear box are loose and gear box needs replacing and vehicle needs alignment. Second set of front tires are worn down to wear bar after only 13,000 miles. Cost for gear box replacement and four wheel alignment is $900. Dealer stated no recalls or service bulletins for steering/gear problem.

The power steering has apparently went out in the car. It is difficult to turn left, usually at low speeds, but recently it is also failing at higher speeds. Just bought the car last year, warranty just ran out at 34,000 miles. Dealer assumes no responsibility.
Failed steering. Repair required complete replacement of the power steering rack assembly.

The car without warning became very difficult to impossible to make right turns. Ford knows there is a problem that they claim is not a safety risk per TSB (service bulletin) 09-5-7. In our case we were traveling slowly through a drive through safari and were left stranded on a hill with several wild animals around our car trying to get in while we were unable to turn to get up the hill. We were also unable to make any evasive maneuvers that involved turning towards the right.

Unable to steer in a parking lot to park. Turning left became extremely difficult and a hissing sound occurred. This has not caused an accident but in several situations it has come very close. I feel that Ford needs to recall and fix this issue since after doing research I have found this is happening on all vehicles of my make, model and year. This issue has caused my to fail my vehicle inspection for safety. It's an obvious problem and if the state will not pass because they feel its a safety issue then I believe the dealer needs to resolve this problem.
Every Taurusx and other models using same steering racks, loss of power steering at low engine speed sometimes left or right or both, no warning. Ford has a sb on it if under warranty they pay out owner pays sounds like they are trying to get off paying to repair a defect. It can happen any time without warning.
Slow speed turning very stiff, so stiff that my wife cannot turn tight at slow speeds. Returned to dealer and had car inspected. Ford said nothing wrong. Has happened twice more before failing completely. Ford says not covered by 5 year warranty. $1100. 00 repair and the part is backordered. Obviously Ford has a problem with their steering components but doesn't want to admit it.
