1 Front Seat Heater/cooler problem of the 2013 Ford Taurus

Failure Date: 01/15/2018

I was driving the car in December 2017 on the highway. I turned on the heated seat for the driver's side of the car. The heater heated up until it was burning my buttocks (it felt like a bee-sting). I turned the seat off and it stopped burning. This has happened every time I have attempted to turn the heated seat on since that time regardless of the car being in motion or in park. Occasionally, I smell an odor that smells like wires burning. I took the car to the dealership and was told that the heater in the bottom and back of the driver's seat needs to be replaced; however, it is not covered as a safety concern (because a recall has not been issued for the seat heaters) nor is it covered under the extended warranty that was purchased with the automobile.

4 Front Seat Heater/cooler problem of the 2011 Ford Taurus

Failure Date: 01/14/2015

My mother was driving down the road, and turned on the seat heater. After several minutes the seat heater overheated and burned the backs of her legs. Several days later my father turned it on, it burned through several layers of his winter clothes and left a burn mark on the leather seat. This condition is extremely unsafe, and has caused both personal injury and damage to the car.

5 Front Seat Heater/cooler problem of the 2009 Ford Taurus

Failure Date: 10/24/2008

My client, peggy stephenson was a passenger in the front passenger seat of a 2009 Ford Taurus. She is paralyzed from the waste down and was unaware the seat heater was on for the entire 2 hour drive from phoenix skyharbor airport to sedona, arizona. She subsequently discovered that she sustained 3rd degree burns on the bottom of her buttocks from the seat heater being on. I just read a section of the owner's manual for the car and there is a warning that says in substance that individuals with spinal cord injuries can sustain burns even when the seat heater is used at low temperatures when used for an extended period of time. This owners' manual warning was obviously not read by my client when she entered the rent-a-car. A seat that can burn someone is not acceptable under any circumstances. In addition, a warning should be posted inside the vehicle in plain view since car renters won't read the owner's manual. The car seat heater should be recalled before more injuries occur. Ira m.
