Power Train Problems of Ford Thunderbird

Driving on a highway at 50mph coming to a town and a red light I removed my foot from the gas pedal and applied the brakes the car did not slow I applied more pressure on the brakes the car slowed some but the engine kept reving the transmission was not down shifting the car was not stopping I grabbed the shift lever and switched gears but to late and we hit the car in front of us stopped at the light.

As I was parking my car, it suddenly accelerated at a very high rate of speed. I was parking by a wooded area, and was propelled about 2 car lengths into the bushes in the woods (barely missing a tree) before I was able to stop the car. Not certain if the car stopped because of my braking, or because the thick bushes would not permit the car to travel any further. I had the car towed to the Ford dealership, but the service dept. Has not been able to find the problem. I am absolutely certain this was not a "driver error" situation and am very concerned about continuing to drive this vehicle should this occur again and I hit someone or something less forgiving than the bushes in the woods.

Tl- the contact owns a 2004 Ford Thunderbird. The contact stated that while driving approximately 45 mph, the transmission would not shift correctly and exhibited a severe hesitation. The vehicle was driven to a nearby transmission center where the contact was informed that the transmission would need to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the defect. The approximate failure mileage was 55,000. Kmj.

I smell gas when driving at high speed of 60 and above on freeway mostly. Once in a while I can smell it when driving at lower speeds of 25 -30mph. I used to think that I had spilled gas on the outside of car when it first started happening, but now a year later, I still smell gas and I do smoke in my car, but when I smell the gas, I will put the cigarette out. Is there some kind of recall on this problem, that can repair it. I have put $4000. 00 into restoring the car and I and putting another $800. 00 into it next week, November 2013, to replace all of the belts around the engine. I have already rebuilt the transmission for $1800. 00 at aamco, and put a $2200. 00 paint job on it, before I knew of the gas smell. I have also replaced alternator and battery. Am I fighting a losing battle with this car?.

The contact owns a 1997 Ford Thunderbird. The contact stated that the vehicle would not start. The vehicle was towed home and was not taken to have the failure diagnosed. The contact also stated that prior to the failure, the vehicle would decelerate while driving at various speeds. The approximate failure mileage was 86,000.

I've seen numerous complaints for this same issue and I've done a lot of research on it. My 2002 Ford Thunderbird began having this problem at 43,700 miles. I did not know what the issue was and it was intermittent. Within the past month (September, 2011), I have personally replaced all eight plugs, boots and coils. While doing this I found three plugs that were oil fouled. After completing this repair the car continues to drive rough. The tach will race, the car will not accelerate smoothly or at all while trying to enter a highway and behaves poorly on both neighborhood roads and the highway. I could not afford to have the dealer make the repairs. As a matter of fact, just a week before I replaced the plugs, boots and coils, I had the oil changed at the dealer. They changed the oil, rotated the tires, replaced the oil filter and air filter and windshield wipers. They charged me $151 for this. I think that is robbery!! when I checked out, the mechanic said that it appears I have a "coil" problem. Hmmm. I researched this issue and know that Ford will not admit nor include the 2002 in their extended warranty program. This is shameful! this coil on boot problem is a major safety issue and many folks can be hurt or killed because of how the car behaves when this problem arises. I called customer service at Ford corporate to attempt to register a complaint, the customer service person said "we don't have any problems that we can talk about with this model". Well, that sounds like an admission of guilt to me. I am hoping that perhaps you can assist all of us who own 2002 t-birds get justice from Ford and have them admit they have a problem and fix it! extend our warranties before another owner has an accident or dies as a result of this problem. There are 1000s of us! I've owned seven Fords and never have I had an issue or treatment like this before.

Most 2002-2005 Thunderbird have has cop ignition failures. Ford has issued a TSB and has authorized free repairs and replacements on 2003-2005 Thunderbird but not 2002 models. There are more 2002 models than any other year, yet Ford is ignoring the problem. . Read more...

Odometer not working.

1997 Ford Thunderbird with shifting problems. Consumer states that the shifter lever after pressure on brake pedal does not release shifter handle. He had the brake light/release switch replaced and problem still exists. The consumer had difficulty removing the shifter out of park.
