Five problems related to ignition switch have been reported for the 2001 GMC Jimmy. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
The contact owns a 2001 GMC Jimmy. While driving approximately 25 mph, the contact detected smoke coming from the steering column. Suddenly, the rear brake light system activated without the brakes being applied. The brake lights remained illuminated until the engine was turned off. The failure occurred intermittently and the dealer was notified of the malfunctions. The vehicle was previously repaired according to NHTSA campaign id number 08v231000 (exterior lighting:brake lights;switch); however, the remedy has not corrected the issue. The vehicle has not been repaired. The failure and current mileages were 102,000. Updated 10/06/09 the consumer stated he purchased the parts and had the dealer replace the combination and ignition switch. Updated 10/08/09.
The dash lights were on as if car was not running but car was running. All gauges would not work. This was intermittent. The key could not be removed from the ignition during one of these instances. Dealer replaced ignition switch.

At 12,270 miles we had no brake lights taken to the dealer and he replaced the turn signal and said that was the problem. That was in June. On July 6, 2001 the dash board lights flashed several times lighting all of the guages showing that the engine was not running, but it was still running. Engine light stayed on. Took the vehicle to the dealer who found multiple trans dtc's internal failure replace ignition switch and performed relearn. I am concerned that this vehicle will have more defects, please let me know if others are having the same problem. Thank you.
On going problem with ignition switch going bad, had two replaced within 36,000 miles and now at the present mileages of 44,000, the problem with hesitation and the dash board lights going out momentary while driving have re-occured again. Dealer and the manufacturer have been notified.
