Speed Control Linkage problems of the 1998 GMC Safari

Three problems related to speed control linkage have been reported for the 1998 GMC Safari. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Speed Control Linkage problem

Failure Date: 08/17/2001

Throttle cable frayed causing extreme and unwarranted acceleration from 65 mph fwy speed to 90 mph and then stuck open at this point. Braking extremely difficult due to speed, however managed to reduce speed to point of being able to place gear in nuetral position and stop. As a result brake pads were ruined and needed replacement as well as accelerator cable.

2 Speed Control Linkage problem

Failure Date: 01/12/2000

Driving came to a stop. Went to pull away from the intersection and accelerator pedal was pushed to the floor, it didn't respond. Then all of a sudden it responded to full speed. Had to brake right away to avoid a collision. Contacted dealer who said it was a maintenance problem, and that carbon built up on the accelerator linkage.

3 Speed Control Linkage problem

Failure Date: 10/01/1998

Throttle linkage not connected correctly by manufacturer.
