The consumer stated has purchased a new van with the same defect as the previous van and stated that he knows gm has a mirror to remedy the defect. This past weekend in canton, texas the consumer encountered two vendors with the same vehicle similar to his van and they both have the wide angle mirror on the passenger's side. Side mirrors on both the front left (driver's door) and front right (passenger) door are not stable particularly at moderate to highway speeds. The mirrors shake and vision becomes blurred which is a safety concern. Both side mirrors have been replaced 4 times since the vehicle was purchased over a year and one-half timeframe. Per discussions with the dealer's service manager (david wright), the dealer has noticed the problem on many similar vehicles. In fact, the dealer's service manager mentioned both he and the body shop manager own similar vehicles and have experienced the same problem on their own vehicles. After notifying general motors of the problem, a 4th repair attempt was made by putting model year 2000 mirrors on the 1999 vehicle. Unfortunately the most recent repair did not fix the problem and per discussions with the gm legal correspondence / customer service representative (dawn whitt @ 1-800-231-1841 prompt 9 ext. 58909), per her discussions with the gm vehicle area manager (dennis ferguson) the problem is a design problem and gm can do nothing else to fix the problem other than what it has already done. Use of the mirrors is very important particularly for a full-size van like the Savana. The shaking is a safety hazard since the vision is blurred which could result in an accident when changing lanes if the vision is not clear as the side mirrors are the only equipment on the van that the driver can use to see vehicles on either side of the van.
Consumer has problems with the exterior rearview mirrors shaking. It's been taken to the dealer 4 times. Once they reordered the mirrors, it still wasn't fixed. The 2nd time, they tried using weights. The 3rd time, they just said they couldn't fix it. Consumer said that it is very dangerous because driver really can't see, and things aren't visible.
Outsides mirrors wobble when driving at highway speeds, causing poor visibility, which could result in an accident. Gm is aware of problem, but there is no solution.
