Power Steering Pump problems of the 1999 GMC Sierra 1500

Power steering suddenly goes into max assist when making gradual turns causing the steering wheel to jerk out of your hands and almost causing an accident. Vehicle swerved all over the freeway until it could be stopped. Apparently gm is aware of the problem since they make a bypass kit (p/n 19168825) to eliminate the faulty actuator mounted on the power steering pump but they will not issue a recall even though this is an extreme safety hazard. Gm expects you to buy a $70 kit to remedy the problem. This has been an ongoing random intermittent problem with my suburban for the last 8-9 yrs.
