Speedometer fails to reset to zero. When vehicle comes to a stop, the speedometer indicator stops at a speed above zero (I. E. , 30, 40, 50 mph). When the vehicle resumes traveling, the speedometer indicator starts incrementing at the speed at which it stopped (I. E. , 30, 40, 50 mph). Therefore, the indicated speed is much higher than the actual speed. This is not one incident, but an ongoing continuous problem, and very dangerous.
I have a 2004 GMC sierra that has a malfunctioning speedometer. It shows reading anywhere from 0-100 mph over what you are traveling at. With the truck turened off - the speedometer will show it at speeds of up to 100 mph. This all started at about the 40,000 mile mark. We previously had a 2004 chevy 5500 truck that too began w/ speedometer trouble at the 40,000 mile range. We know several other people with a 2004 chevy/GMC all of whom have this same problem. Checking around the internet and it appears that this is a huge problem that should warrant a recall before something tragic could happen.
2004 GMC sierra at 50,000 miles developed a speedometer short in the instrument cluster which caused wild swings in mph readings. After mentioning it to a friend with a chevy silverado, same year and mileage , I found he had the identical problem . I had the cluster replaced at my cost.
Speedometer acting erratic, speedometer may register 120 mph when I'm going 60 mph. Then it finally quits. It costs a lot of money to get replaced. I do not know how fast or slow I'm going which endangers me and everybody around me.
My GMC sierra crew cab k1500 z-71 speedometer began malfunctioning around 37,000 miles. It will stick at 0, or sometimes at 20 or 50. The problem is intermittent and gets better sometimes if I stop and turn off the engine. Now volt meter is not working properly. This is a safety hazard, since I can't tell the mph that I am driving. I regularly carry my 2 small sons and this is quite scary. I have noticed that this is a recurring problem with many gm products this age. General motors has a major problem here !.

The contact owns a 2004 GMC Sierra 1500. While driving approximately 35 mph, the instrument panel failed without warning. The failure recurred on numerous occasions. The vehicle was taken to a dealer and independent mechanic. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 30,000.
The contact owns a 2004 GMC Sierra 1500. The speedometer worked intermittently and displayed inaccurate speeds before completely failing. The vehicle was under warranty, but the dealer stated that the failure was not a warranty item. The vehicle was not repaired at that time and has since worsened. General motors has a letter of intent on the instrument panel, but because the vehicle has exceeded the 70,000 miles specified in the letter, the contact was denied the repair. The current mileage was 98,000 and failure mileage was 60,000.
I have a 2004 z71 sierra truck with a 5. 3 engine that has a speedometer problem. It reads 120mph all of the time and they have quoted me around $550 to fix. I also have a clunk in the steering wheel when turning. I have had this problem fixed once by warranty but it has returned again.
Speedometer displays erroneous readings, never correct.
