2 Body problem

Failure Date: 12/10/2024

The vehicle’s frame has severely rusted to the point of structural compromise. My certified mechanic determined on December 10, 2024, that the frame could not pass the state safety inspection due to advanced corrosion. Welding is now required to restore structural integrity. The truck has remained inoperable and sidelined since that date. The frame is available for inspection upon request, and I have photos, repair invoices, and a mechanic’s written evaluation. This same frame was previously reworked by GMC twice: may 7, 2018 – frame treated for premature rust. November 4, 2019 – frame recoated after prior treatment failed due to improper descaling. Despite these reworks under GMC direction, the issue has progressed to a dangerous level. The structural integrity of the frame is compromised. A severely rusted frame puts occupants and others on the road at risk in the event of a collision, towing, or even regular driving. A weakened frame could lead to loss of vehicle control, failure to protect occupants in a crash, or catastrophic breakage of suspension or driveline components while in motion. Yes. The problem has been confirmed by an independent certified mechanic, who inspected the frame and advised that the rust is beyond surface level and requires welding to repair. They refused to weld during winter due to safety concerns and advised that the truck could not be driven or pass inspection in its current state. The vehicle was previously serviced under GMC’s direction in 2018 and 2019 by a GMC dealer (weird GMC) to address early frame corrosion. However, the current failure has not yet been inspected by GMC directly since becoming undriveable in late 2024. I have reached out to GMC customer assistance and am awaiting a response. There were no dashboard warning lights or alerts for this issue. The only indications were visible signs of rust, which rapidly worsened after the 2019 rework. My mechanic noted signs of significant corrosion during routine servicing.

9 Body problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2023

While driving on the highway, the passenger shock mount that is welded to the rear forward mounted crossmember snapped off due to rust. I have taken many pictures of the damage. I am a master certified ase and Ford technician with my PA emissions and safety inspection licenses. I inspected the damage to my truck at my shop and removed the bed. I found further rust and damage at the drivers frame and rear shock mount at the rearward mounted crossmember. The whole rear frame section is rotting away. This caused the vehicle to sway heavily and change the driving attributes of the vehicle. I have not contacted police or the insurance company. There were no warning lamps of any kind.

10 Body problem

Failure Date: 10/17/2022

This truck has a 5 star crash rating, but is rusting very badly due to a defect in the design of the truck. There are tracks in the roof that lead down behind the cab. The water rolls down and then there is an indentation that holds the water. This water holding creates rust, horrible rust. The rockers, frame and the fuel pump rusted badly due to this defect. The 5 star crash rating comes into huge doubt due to such rust from the design defect.

11 Body problem

Failure Date: 02/16/2021

After about 5-10 minutes of driving there was a burning plastic smell and about 1-2 minutes after that a loud bang (almost like a gunshot) after pulling over, I looked around to find the left side of the back window was blown out. Long story short, I called the dealer to set up service and was told they performed the recall fix for this problem on my GMC. . . . . I don't think it was either done or the fix didn't solve it. I can provide pictures tomorrow. . . . . And I was driving down a city street and in motion - the street was not bumpy, in fact it was snow covered. I think this could have been a fire hazard judging by the horrific smell.

12 Body problem

Failure Date: 07/24/2020

Was driving through a local parking lot, going only 3 miles an hour and started to turn left when all of a sudden the driver side wheel just snapped off throwing me into the steering wheel. My right arm got a scrape and right shoulder popped. The truck hit a metal pole and dented the driver side panel, missing the head light. So glad this didn't happen on the highway.

I purchased my vehicle brand new in order to avoid unexpected expenses that one sometimes inquire when we purchase a used vehicle. However, the truck has given me nothing but mechanical issues I've head engine power loss problems, have gone through two air conditioner major issues, radiator gone bad, transmission go out and the most recent my roof started to leak. As I did more research I came to discover that I am not the only customer in this predicament there are several others. I'm reaching out to for assistance in regards to these matters, something has to be done GMC has to take responsibility for faulty vehicles if that's is the case. They only give the go around to customers like myself that on top of having a car payment we have to somehow pay high mechanical bills for issues that should not be accruing to new vehicles.

17 Body problem

Failure Date: 01/20/2018

I temporarily had no control over the vehicle causing me to have an accident. While driving down a residential street approaching a stop sign intersection I merged into the center of st to pass a trashcan and in the process of returning to my correct position on the road I suddenly had no steering. Panicking from the loss I pressed my brakes an attempt to bring vehicle to a stop but was unsuccessful because the tires began a slide once noticing the traction loss I proceeded to release brakes and reapply in hopes of gaining traction the brief relief from brakes caused the vehicle to regain traction and while I still have no control over steering, the vehicle jerks towards the right side of the road and the brakes being reapplied the vehicle continues to slide off pavement making contact with stop sign and telephone pole.

18 Body problem

Failure Date: 11/28/2016

My vehicle has side board steps. The tread pattern is such that when wet or icy the step is a virtual skid pad. When you place weight on the foot on the tread it immediately slips out from under your position. Last year I broke a foot when I slipped and this year it was an ankle. Tread design needs to be improved and turned 90. As designed there is no traction protection. Just the opposite, it promotes lack of traction resulting in slipping and falling.

21 Body problem

Failure Date: 08/22/2014

On 4/10/2014 I fartory ordered an 2014 GMC 1500 crew cab 4x4 short bed with a max trailer towing package. This towing package had a maximum trailering weight of 11,800# and a gcwr of 17,500#. I took receipt of the vehivle on 5/29/14. On 6/4/14 gm released doccument 3931537 stating that the gcvwr in the owners manual is incorrect. The max trailer weight is now being stated as 11,200# and a gcwr of 16,700# after the release of this doccument. This 800# gcvwr reduction is an issue as the vehicle was originally purchased and sized with the original towing capacities and gcwr. At this time, gm does not manufacturer any 1/2 ton trucks that will accomodate the original towing capacities that I factory ordered and purchased my vehicle at. I have been working with the dealership on this issue since August 22,2014 and there has been no resolution to this point; therefore, I am filing this complaint.
