38 Electrical System problem of the 2020 GMC Sierra 3500

Failure Date: 06/26/2022

The component that failed was the passenger side or main battery. Our safety was compromised when the design of the hvac system and the battery location allowed the hydrogen sulfide gas into the passenger compartment of the vehicle. The issue has not been confirmed by a deal or independent service center. The battery(s) and vehicle are available for inspection to confirm the issue. I have uploaded pictures of the battery and one can visually see the swollen battery with liquid leaking out of it. There were no warning messages or other symptoms prior to the failure. The rotten egg smell started shortly after the truck was started and my three young children were in the truck for about 10-15 minutes while I was loading items in the bed of the truck. When I entered the vehicle, the smell was extremely strong and my eyes started burning. I opened all the windows to air out the passenger compartment and thought it was possible off gassing from the nearby septic field. Once driving with the windows now closed, the smell came back instantly and very strong. My children started complaining of headache and nausea. For the next part of the trip, we drove with the windows down. When we arrived at our destination, I was able to determine the smell was coming out of the hvac system while in normal "auto" mode. Opening the hood, I went to smell around the engine compartment and when I got over the passenger side main battery, the rotten egg smell was so strong that my nose and eyes instantly started burning. We then drove the truck home with the windows closed and the hvac system in recirculate but the smell still entered the passenger compartment. All four of us had symptoms of hydrogen sulfide poisoning with my son being the worse with multiple vomiting episodes immediately upon exiting the vehicle. Poison control was notified and all four of us were evaluated in our local emergency department for inhalation toxin. The truck is all oem.

39 Electrical System problem of the 2016 GMC Sierra 3500

Failure Date: 02/05/2022

I had the rear defrost running, and began to hear a sizzling/hissing sound in the back seat. After a minute of hearing this noise, I noticed smoke coming from the rear sliding window. I immediately turned off the rear defrost. A few seconds later, I heard a loud pop and the passenger side of my rear window was shattered. I called and spoke with the dealership and explained what had happened. They said they knew exactly what had happened and it is pretty common in these trucks.

41 Electrical System problem of the 2020 GMC Sierra 3500

Failure Date: 11/03/2021

Infotainment system and center instrument cluster went completely black - six times over the course of one month. I took the truck to alan webb Chevrolet in vancouver washington. Their service technician was aware of infotainment system “black screen of death - bsd” problems due to previous repair work on several different gm models. However, on the way to their service department to get this fixed, I rolled down the driver’s side window about 6 inches to get some fresh air and rolled it back up. Out of nowhere the infotainment system and the center instrument cluster came back to life. No rhyme, no reason and both stayed on (illuminated). Their service technician could not recreate the bsd. They had my truck for more than one week and said they were working with gm engineers to resolve this issue. Gm case number sr 9-7065134382. I’m driving and towing my 5th wheel blind without a remedy for this electrical issue.

43 Electrical System problem of the 2020 GMC Sierra 3500

Failure Date: 04/14/2021

The computer malfunctions. It is available for inspection. The computer lights up and causes failure in the trailer brakes. Glenn polk the dealership in sanger texas has been working on a fix but has yet to come up with one. I have spoken with general motors representatives several time trying to resolve the problem without result. I also emailed the ceo last Friday and have heard nothing. There were no warning lights until seconds before failure.

44 Electrical System problem of the 2017 GMC Sierra 3500

Failure Date: 03/04/2021

My truck is affected by gm’s engine block?heater safety recall (NHTSA 21v?496 / gm n212329840) addressing a risk of short circuit and potential engine?compartment fire at the heater cord/terminal connection. Gm’s interim action has been to remove/disable the block?heater cord, which my dealer did, and then marked the recall “completed. ” as a result, the NHTSA VIN tool shows 0 unrepaired recalls, even though no actual repair/restored functionality exists and gm continues to advise owners not to use the block heater until parts are available. Safety concern / impact: I live in a cold?weather area and purchased this diesel expecting a functioning block heater for reliable cold starts. Disabling the heater has removed an intended cold?weather safety/starting aid for multiple winters without a final fix. Gm’s bulletin explicitly allowed dealers to disable the cord to close the recall, rather than provide a repair, leaving owners without the feature indefinitely. Suspiciously, I have also had to replace glow plugs on this truck sooner than traditional wear / failure rates would demand - including one glow plug that has been replaced twice in short span of time (should have lasted years). I continue to monitor gm’s recall portal; still no parts/remedy schedule. Please review whether gm’s chosen remedy—disabling a safety?related feature and closing the recall—is adequate and within a reasonable time under the safety act. If not, I request NHTSA open a recall query into remedy adequacy and timeliness so owners receive a real repair (replacement heater/cord/connector) or appropriate alternative remedies.

50 Electrical System problem of the 2015 GMC Sierra 3500

Failure Date: 10/02/2015

This vehicle has had numerous electrical issue from the first few months of ownership. The trailer brake system failed and was replaced on October 2014. The vehicle has had many recalls that have been corrected by owner and service provider. The second summer of ownership the vehicle had radiator issues, and most recently electrical issues again and transmission issues. While driving the vehicle electrical dashboard goes into a flicker and shuts down. GMC was able to fix this issue at the owners cost with the vehicle being out of service for 3 weeks. GMC was to reimburse the owner for costs of a gm dealer that was not able to fix the issue (painter automotive)(February 9, 2017) of $300, this has not been reimbursed. The vehicle is now at the service station as it does not start with no codes. It has been out of service for 2 weeks and counting, this vehicle is no longer reliable or safe for us to drive. We have documentation of all the issues and video of the dashboard flicker.

Speedometer erratically shows incorrect speed while driving. Sometimes displaying 120mph or 0mph. Very dangerous and should be a mandatory recall checked with dealer and would cost $800. 00 to replace bad instrument cluster. Only has 73,000 miles.

56 Electrical System problem of the 2005 GMC Sierra 3500

Failure Date: 08/19/2008

Speedometer was off a lot!! 74 mph while sitting still, 130+ mph while driving at normal road speeds. I did not know how fast I was traveling. School zones etc. Never know if I was speeding or not. This happened several times while on vacation in California. Sometimes it was normal, but it got worse. It first happened at about 65,000 miles. I contacted my dealer and was told it may be under warranty, as many have had this same problem. They said my 2005 GMC did not fall under a warranty. I had to pay $356. 70 plus tax to have the instrument cluster replaced. I asked for the old parts, but was told gm needed it back so they could rebuild it for the next failure!! it seems gm is covering certain serial number vehicles built prior to mine. 2003 and 2004 model years, but mine is a 2005 and its not covered! why? I have never heard of such a problem, and I have owned 11 gm made vehicles and never had a speedometer go bad. Hopefully you can get them to cover this.

59 Electrical System problem of the 2000 GMC Sierra 3500

Failure Date: 06/20/2003

I have had electrical problems with this truck since purchased. It has been in the service center 3 different times with no resolution. Now the engine will not turn over and when attempting to use booster cables to start the cables began to smoke and the copper wires melted. In an attempt to remove the cables before the other car ignited I was burned. Additionally the truck keys were not in the on position. That is I had not attempted to start the vehicle yet.
