One problem related to tailgate has been reported for the 1998 GMC Sonoma. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Tailgate cables rusted, and broke. Several other GMC pick ups have the same problem, and was under recall. I have the same problem, why not a recall item. This is potential safety issue when hauling items with tailgate down.
