GMC Sonoma owners have reported 10 problems related to tailgate latch (under the latches/locks/linkage category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of GMC Sonoma based on all problems reported for the Sonoma.
2000 GMC Sonoma was being used to move into an apartment. The tailgate latch did not engage and the tailgate came open. The tailgate cable failed on one side. The tailgate dropped to the road and was dragged by the vehicle. The vehicle was stopped on noticing the sparks from metal on the concrete road surface and hearing the noise. The tailgate was damaged on the drivers side with metal and paint worn away. The tailgate was touch up painted to prevent rust. A GMC dealer was contacted but due the cost(over $100) the cable was not replaced and the truck has seen limited use for cargo. The cable is still installed on the truck and it is completed corroded at the point of failure and I do not trust the condition of the remaining cable.

The tailgate on my Sonoma truck was in the open position, a piece of wood (so small it didn't even leave a dent) fell on the gate. The two cables which support the tailgate both snapped at the same time allowing the gate to fall straight down. After finding the info regarding the sierra trucks having this problem, you need to know it is the small trucks as well. The exact same replacement parts from GMC cost me approx $96. 00, and I have to install them myself! very hazardous.
2000 GMC Sonoma pickup. Tailgate was down while unloading groceries. Both cables holding tailgate up broke at same time allowing tailgate to drop on bumper.
1997 GMC Sonoma. The consumer states the tailgate cable on the driver side broke while he was standing on it. The passenger side also broke. The vehicle has been repaired. He contacted GMC, and they told him if there was a recall he would be reimbursed. He did not want to pay to have this fixed. He took cables from another type of vehicle and fixed it himself.

Tailgate support cables 2000 GMC Sonoma why not on reall with other gm trucks. Mine broke within 5 days off each other. No weight at all.
Was unloading my motorcycle out of the back of my 2001 GMC Sonoma when one of the tailgate straps broke. Fortunatley I was able to get the bike under control and get my footing prior to it going down, so no injury or damage was done. Nothing has been replaced at this time. Still have the old part on the vehicle. The other strap is on it's way to breaking as well, you can see by the way the plastic coating is enlarged that it is rusting. Gm is recalling the full size vehicle tailgate straps which appear to be of the same concept as these on the Sonoma.

I was sitting with my son on the tailgate of my GMC Sonoma and both tailgate cables broke causing us to fall to the ground. I bruised my back but did not seek medical attention. After several calls to GMC, I was told that there was a recall but they have never contacted me since the date of the incident.
I own a 1998 GMC Sonoma pickup. Both tailgate cables failed by breaking in half because of rust. I have not replaced them and am currently not using my tailgate because each one costs $42. 00 (they are part of the latch assembly). Gm has recalled tailgate cables on full size trucks - does anybody beleive the cables on their smaller trucks were any better? I am a beleiver the same problem exists but they sell less small trucks so there are fewer complaints. I would like to see mine corrected like many other gm truck owners have.

Both cables rusted through on tailgate. No injuries originally reported to GMC in sept. 2003. Now a recall is pending and is supposed to be issued 3rd quarter of 2004. I cannot use the truck bed until these are fixed. 3 yrs is way to long for this recall to take place.
