1 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2002 GMC Suburban

Failure Date: 10/15/2005

Contact owns a 2002 GMC Suburban. While driving and changing gears, and when putting it in reverse it sounds like the engine is falling out. While changing gears its like a big thud. When changing from park to reverse it sounds like it is coming apart. When turning the car into neutral red light stays on, and that has never happened before. The contact will take the vehicle to the dealership to be checked. Also, the contact smelled a burning odor.

2 Automatic Transmission problem of the 1998 GMC Suburban

Failure Date: 07/01/2004

1998 Suburban w/ 4l60e transmission, shifting hard 1-2 and 2-3. Research shows it is a known problem of manufacturer addresses under gm tech serv bulletin 01-07-30-023b. Further, internet search indicates that problem is manufacturers design error, and that only permanent fix is to use an aftermarket suppliers re-designed replacement part. Currently, I am in the position of having to seek repair at estimated costs ranging from $1800-2800 from local service providers.

The transmission on my 1998 GMC surburban failed. I was told by the dealer and another transmission specialist that this particular problem has been common to the 1997-98 GMC and Chevrolet surburbans, tahoes and comparable vehicles. It is not fair to consumers for an auto maker to know about severe problems like this with vehicles and not issue a recall or correct the problem. 9 Automatic Transmission problem of the 1999 GMC Suburban

Failure Date: 04/17/2002

Have owned '90gmc c1500 p/u & '99 GMC c1500 Suburban in past 12 years; both vehicles have had same problems w/ front brake pull/wear; suspension; brake pipes; engine/trans. Hesitation, hang. . . . ; corroded + battery cables, batteries; leaking hvac ducts; and on & on. How in the world does 12+/- years of documented brake problems across vehicle lines/models not warrant a massive recall and/or compensation to owners for obviously faulty engineering, materials, etc. . . . . ????!!!! I suppose the Ford/firestone problems took precedence? can you say "class action"??.

18 Automatic Transmission problem of the 1999 GMC Suburban

Failure Date: 08/26/1999

Vehicle was moving on the interstate while at 65 mph on cruise control. The automatic gear shift column was struck by the passenger and the transmission was sent into reverse. This action caused the brakes to lockup and the control mechanical lock on the wheel column was locked into a right hand turn with no way to control the vehicle. The vehilce started to skid out of control and then proceeded to roll over three times. All occupants were in saftey belts except my daughter who was int the back seat asleep. The vehicle was totally destroyed. It took resecue crews to remove myself the driver and daughter who was trapped in the back. We were transported via ambulance to a local hospital. All five passengers were released with only minor bruises and cuts. I would like to find out why the steering column lock and why a safety feature is not provided to keep the transmission from being accidently put into reverse while the vehicle is traveling in drive. Please help me find a solution to this potential problem.

23 Automatic Transmission problem of the 1997 GMC Suburban

Example of problem, when the truck has run 50 miles or so on the freeway, stop at off ramp. The truck shifts hard from 1st to 2 nd when I pull away. This continues until I shut the truck off, wait a few minutes and start again. Then it is fine for a while and will repeat the same, sometimes weeks apart, more often in the summer months. My driving pattern is one of short trips, so I guess this is why my problem is sparodic. I have read many complaints one web sites about this problem with other gm cars and trucks, the code #1870 seems to figure in most cases, most people have had no luck with gm, and are stuck with bills of 2-3000 dollars. I hope you can check this out, seems to cover gm cars and trucks from the 80s-01. Thank's graham brown. Dt.
