Vehicle was running but transmission was in park. Suddenly on screen in front of driver this message appeared: brake system failure 43mph top speed warning service esc. Vehicle was not moving. Engine was running but vehicle was in park. I had to drive it home. Very difficult to stop. Brake pedal vibrated violently. Very long stopping distance even at 20mph. I had the vehicle towed to the dealership from which I had purchased it. I bought this vehicle on 25 Nov 2024. Right now its mileage is 3757. Obviously my safety and that of others was put at risk. The service department at the dealership has not communicated with me at this time. There was no prior warning nor were there any prior symptoms of this problem. It occurred very suddenly.

I was going to my sons home which is located on a steep dowhill street with several turns, one of ther almost 90 degrees. As I started to desend the hill and gain speed, I depressed the foot brake. It did not respond at all. As I continued to gain speed and coming up on the sharp curve, I continued to pump and apply brake . The brakes did not work. I continued to gain speed and go around 2 other turns. At the end of the street I had a choice to contine straight ahead and hit a house, turn right and continue down another steep street until I hit a home at the end of the street or try to turnleft andgo up hill. I turne left up the hill and finally got stopped befor I could put the vehicle in park or apply the brake I begainto roll backwards on the steep incline . I rolled by andhit a curb, jumped into the yard and hit a bush, small tree and an electric ground transformer, coming to reset about 4 feet of the ground on top of the trnsforer. . The utility workers said that I was lucky not to get eectrocuted. This vehicle waspurchased about 7 day prior to the accident, the brakes simply failed addid not work at all.

When restarting after vehicle "auto stop" I am getting "service brake assist" and occasionally "service esc" warnings. These warnings were associated with brake failure in gm SUV's and pickups and were subject to a recall. No such recall exists for the Terrain. I haven't yet experienced a brake failure but gm seems to want to wait until I do to fix the problem.

I purchased a brand new 2018 GMC Terrain (VIN no. 3gkalvex1jl143983) two years ago. The vehicle has approximately 50,000 miles on it. On August 6, 2020, my husband and I were traveling with our 2-year-old son to attend an out-of-state funeral. Traveling around 75 mph on the highway, the brakes failed us. The pedal became entirely stiff making it nearly impossible to slow down and stop. It took considerable force to bring the vehicle to a stop. Remind you, I was traveling with my 2-year-old son.
I had a temporary brake failure at 25mph with a hard brake. I had a car pull out in front of me and I had to hard brake. The brake pedal was soft and went all the way to the floor with no braking until it was all the way to the floor and it finally worked with a sudden stop/jolt. When this happened it made a low sort of almost vibration sound. I did not feel a vibration in the brake pedal though. The brakes worked well before that and after that. If the brake would have not suddenly grabbed when the pedal was to the floor I would have hit the car. I was going about 25mph. I know what it sounds and feels like to have worn brakes and rotors. This was not it. Again it was a temporary failure and after that the brakes are their normal firmness and responsiveness. This is definitely a safety hazard as it very unpredictable.
