37 Electrical System problem of the 2015 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 04/23/2024

I am writing to urgently request a safety recall for the GMC Terrain 2015 due to a critical issue with the lift gate mechanism, which may be both electrical and mechanical. Recently, while utilizing the lift gate for routine activities such as grocery shopping, a terrifying incident occurred that endangered the safety of my family members. Upon opening, the lift gate exhibited a concerning behavior, forcefully closing without warning or control, posing a severe risk of injury. Despite attempts to intervene, the gate continued its downward motion unabated, presenting a serious hazard of crushing limbs or causing incapacitating harm. In a frightening moment, one of my family members narrowly avoided a potentially catastrophic injury as the gate threatened to strike her right hand. While I sustained a minor injury to my arm, a superficial wound, the gravity of the situation cannot be understated. This dangerous malfunction persists, rendering the trunk unusable out of fear for the safety of myself and my loved ones. Given the potential for life-altering injuries, I implore you to take immediate action and initiate a recall for all GMC Terrain 2015 models affected by this defect. The safety of consumers should be the utmost priority, and failure to address this issue promptly could result in devastating consequences. I urge you to prioritize this matter and take decisive steps to remedy the situation before further harm occurs. Your swift action in initiating a recall will not only safeguard the well-being of countless individuals but also uphold the reputation of your brand for prioritizing customer safety.

39 Electrical System problem of the 2023 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 04/15/2024

I bought a 2023 GMC terrian sle brand new 14 months ago. It has 30,000 miles on it. I was driving down i75 and the car turned off. No warning signs! not to mention the car had no power! I couldn’t even put on my emergency flashers! me and my 3 year old son luckily were able to make it through a lane of traffic and up the embankment to call for help! I had the car towed to the dealership and they can’t find anything wrong with it! the car is acting normal now but I don’t feel safe in it!.

Failure Date: 01/15/2024

The vehicle tends to not turn on unless I give it a boost. Battery is new and alternator is good it occurs twice to three times a day.

42 Electrical System problem of the 2020 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 01/12/2024

Purchased vehicle brand new- beck & masten Buick gm - houston, TX 9/7/2020 performed rout maint regularly. Last oil change 1-5-2024 before catastrophic failure and complete engine seizure. Towed to wiesner GMC 1-14-2024 1-12-2024: mileage on car roughly 99k- had no issues no check engine light, no mechanical failure or indication that anything was running other than normal. No start on 1/12pm after work, tried to return next day with battery , changed out battery, engine still would not start, after new battery installed and we attempted to start, that is when engine started making loud shaking motion while attempting to start, windshield wipers came on randomly. First initial diagnostic: found all oils & fluids in check, could not identify cause of failure, would have to break down and take apart. Had to authorize the tear down at a 1800. 00 cost, 2/2/2024: broke down engine, found that the crankshaft would move one way , but not other, removed the engine from transmission and now crankshaft moves freely. Now the ac comp is locked up (excessive play on magnet & clutch) , tech still unable to identify what caused the failure, they advised that they found traces of metal in oil pan, scored cylinder walls, starter shorted as well. They still could not indicate where these metal pieces came from, how or that it was due to owner negligence or manuf defects. Again this is a vehicle with 99k miles and now we were looking at a 15k price tag for a new engine, turbo, ac, starter on a car that is worth 12k. This is absolutely insane. We reached out for goodwill discounts for some assistance since the dealership could not solidify a cause of failure, but gm decided to not warranty and stand behind their product. We were left with a rebuild option for 7500. 00. Which we had to do in order to get the car back. I am completely disappointed in gm as a company. This engine should have never failed at 99k.

43 Electrical System problem of the 2018 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 01/01/2024

Rear side windows in hatch area leaked filled up spare tire compartment with about 3-4 gallons of water. Now navigation doesn't want to work, sunroof not working, electric systems are not working right.

44 Electrical System problem of the 2015 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 12/29/2023

The blower fan for heat in my vehicle was replaced in October 2022, recently the defroster will not engage and it is vital to winter driving. The mechanism that switches between which vent to blow out air was replaced and the defroster will still not engage, rather it comes out of the heat and face vents. Shortly after the defroster stopped engaging, the rpms will start fluctuating from 2 suddenly up to 6-8 without warning or acceleration then go back down and back up as if it's chugging along. Even when applying the brakes, this will continue to happen and there's concern for rear-ending or crashing when this happens. When driving home 2 nights ago the county police pulled my vehicle over due to burnt out headlight, which was replaced less than 6 months ago. Took the car in to get bulb replaced today and multiple bulbs later, the light is not fixed and it was said to be electrical and need to go to another shop. Beginning to wonder if this is all a bigger problem about to happen with engine/ powertrain. . With commute to work in the dark and electrical problem in the headlight randomly and the acceleration issues there is definitely a concern for safety.

46 Electrical System problem of the 2021 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 12/20/2023

The car has revved high rpm's since purchase, with multiple attempts to get it resolved . Since then, the steering wheel has jerked out of my hand's multiple times, unexpecting, causing the car to jerk while being stopped. The car has also not budged in the middle of traffic while being in drive and the pedal down to the floor until at least a 10 second delay and when doing so the screen that includes the radio, etc panel has completely blacked out and started twitching.

47 Electrical System problem of the 2018 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 12/20/2023

The door locks began to have issues; the locks started to work only occassionally for no apparent reason. I've been locked out of the car several times and had to use the auxiliary key. Plus I couldn't lock the car while I was inside as the interior door lock button wouldn't lock or unlock the doors either. It's not a kefob or battery issue and no lights on the dashboard. The dealer reports that they couldn't reproduce the issue. However they found corrision on the electrical harness inside the passenger front door. I replaced an electrical harness in the rear bumper 18 months prior for corrision found. The dealer says they received a service bulletin on the "electrical harness" issue however the dealer won't cover the cost of $500 to replace the harness. As this deals with the electrical system, my concern is that it may effect the operation of other components of the car while it's running. Safety and security is of the utmost importance whether at home or away as it regards to being able to lock or unlock the doors.

48 Electrical System problem of the 2019 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 12/18/2023

It began with showing "service brake assist" for about 2 weeks + then on Dec 18th 2023 around 10:30 as my fiancé was stopped at a stoplight and all of sudden when the light turned green she attempted to continue forward as traffic started to move only to stall stalled out before any movement could be achieve the battery was reading severely depleted and the vehicle would not function at all she was stuck in drive and could not put the vehicle in neutral or even park to even try to restart the vehicle, she could not even turn the steering wheel, roll down the windows, open the door, or anything. The only thing she was able to accomplish was opening the hood so an officer that had arrived at this time could give her a jump, the officer also proceeded to leave the negative cable on the battery terminal and disconnected the positive cable from the battery terminal which would have indicated a bad starter or depleted battery when the positive cable had been removed, which was not the case. She continued to where her appointment was and that is where I met her and took over vehicle to transport it home, driving with hazards on. I arrived at the house with no incident. Then at 4:45pm on the evening of 12/18/2023 while at the stoplight I had a similar issue occurred as I was going from a stationary position to a forward slowly accelerated speed gaining momentum where the vehicle wanted to stall out while I was stopped at a stoplight attempting to proceed forward. And then at around 10:20 pm while stopped at a stop sign a similar issue occurred as I was going from a stationary position to a forward slowly accelerated speed gaining momentum attempting to proceed forward. On Dec 19th 2023 around 10:00 am I test started the car by remote and it started up and then I turned it off, now it is showing that the battery is completely depleted at 1:26 pm.

49 Electrical System problem of the 2018 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 12/06/2023

On wed. , Dec. 6 around 3:15 pm during heavy traffic on fwy 101 west, cars slowed down to a brief complete stop. When I went to start slowly as traffic began to move, engine completely shut down. I could not open windows or my door to get out of vehicle. Immediately called 911 and was transferred to dps. It took approximately 65 minutes before I had help and was finally towed from the dangerous freeway lane where I was stuck and with vehicle completely stalled and locked down, I couldn't even get car in n to be able to have help moving to a non dangerous place outside of the fwy lanes. This is the fifth time this car locks down. I've learned to open a panel by the foot brake area, pull a lever in that area and be able to move the car to a safe location until I got towed into the dealer. It is the second time that this has happened in a potentially dangerous street and now freeway. Danger to myself and many others that had to maneuver around me. The first time (around 2020) the car totally shut down, it was reported that a computer harness had to be replaced. This last time I was faced with such a dangerous situation on a fwy it was determined that the ecm (engine control module) had caused the shutdown and locked the vehicle to where I could not even get out for close to an hour. The ecm was replaced by gm and the car is running again, but my shock and trauma still haunt me as to the self and others danger that was present. . GMC dealer finally determined after several attempts that ecm was the problem. Unsure if available to inspect it. Delivered car back 12/8. . Heavy freeway traffic at peak hour put me and many others in serious danger. . My dealer report reads it was difficult to diagnose and finally find ecm was the problem. . Vehicle has not been inspected by manufacturer, police, or insurance. . A few minutes before this lock-down an engine icon appeared while on the fwy. Previous shutdown incidents had no warnings or messages before locking up.

50 Electrical System problem of the 2010 GMC Terrain

51 Electrical System problem of the 2023 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 11/05/2023

The contact's husband owns a 2023 GMC Terrain. The contact stated while driving from a complete stop at the traffic light, the vehicle shut off inadvertently. The contact was able to pull to the side of the road. The contact stated that she pressed the push to start button several times, and the vehicle restarted. The message "reduced engine performance" was displayed, and the check engine warning light was illuminated. The contact stated that she was able to drive; however, the vehicle failed to exceed 15 mph upon depressing the accelerator pedal. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who informed the contact that they could not duplicate the failure. Additionally, the contact stated while reversing in the driveway, the vehicle turned off. The contact stated upon restarting the vehicle, the message "condition not correct for shit" was displayed. The contact stated that the failure recurred while driving out of the driveway on another occasion. The vehicle was taken to the dealer on each occasion; however, the dealer informed the contact that they could not duplicate the failure. The vehicle remained at the dealer. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufcaturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 24,000.

52 Electrical System problem of the 2019 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 10/27/2023

When turning right or left from a stop, the steering wheel jerks sharply in the opposite direction as soon as the car starts to accelerate. Diagnostic tests and inspection determined that the steering gear is loosing voltage causing the jerk in the steering wheel. The gear has the latest calibration and needs to be replaced. Cost estimate to replace is $2035. 63.

53 Electrical System problem of the 2020 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 10/01/2023

Driving down the road at 40mph when the car shifts to park, the brake and steering wheel lock up and the car won’t accelerate. I had to pull over because I almost crashed due to the abrupt shift. Once pulled over I tried to restart the car but once off and back on it wouldn’t allow me to shift or drive it. The steering wheel and brake remained locked. It has happened several times over the past week.

54 Electrical System problem of the 2020 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 08/24/2023

After heavy rain the backseat of the car was flooded as well as the rear wheel well likely due to the sunroof not draining properly. This led to electrical failure of the sunroof mechanism and potential to damage other electrical elements. This will be looked at by the dealership but have read that this is a known issue.

55 Electrical System problem of the 2019 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 08/05/2023

There are 3 recalls and one open on this car I was sold by a dealership, none of them ever fixed. I drive to work in the highway the car never had any warning light on but the rpms would occasionally go up for no reason. I told the dealership the second day that it had issues , they took it and say they fixed the back brakes but did nothing about the engine or transmission whatsoever ever. This was the beginning of may and it was in the shop two weeks. I called my lender to even get out of the loan and a saleswoman even tried assisting me into talking her manager out of the loan because of all the issues. Fast foreword to August I had just gotten a new job and was driving in the night after hearing that ticking or slight knocking noise and I went to my job and as I tried to park the brakes went completely stiff on me! I could not get the car to slow down I had to weave through other cars and people in till it finally coasted to a stop. So I put it in park and immediately after the check engine light came on. I tried to start it and it would start , putter and turn off over and over. I had to end up calling onstar to have a diagnosis which she said something like solenoid and something being clogged. So it was towed to my residence and before I could get it towed to s shop they lender came and repossessed it because I had missed payments due to losing my job unexpectedly, completely unexpectedly. I told the lender of the problem and the unfortunate troubles I was having to pay for the car but I had just landed a job and could start payment but she didn’t care. She said she is going to tow it . I had my friends dad who is a licensed mechanic look at it before it was towed and he said the car was trash , basically a lemon that there was oil clogged and instead of passing through like it’s supposed to do it being pushed the opposite way and ending up in other reservoirs it shouldn’t be in. I obviously didn’t do that type of damage oil and trans problems I was scammed.

56 Electrical System problem of the 2019 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 06/20/2023

When trying to accelerate, the car will not accelerate. It will start to jerk back and forth and I had cut it off completely in the middle of the road at a stop light.

57 Electrical System problem of the 2020 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 06/06/2023

2020 GMC Terrain sle elevation package 83,000 miles and needs complete engine rebuild @ cost of $10,700 per dealership service. Was told “I drove the vehicle with low oil” which inturn is the cause of needing engine rebuilt. I have had this vehicle serviced, oil changed regularly etc not one time has the oil pressure/low engine oil nor anything related to oil illuminated on my dash. Cel yes after it apparently was too late and damage was done which showed code p06dd and p0324 through onstar diagnostics. There are also other complaints with same issue, and no notification of oil /oil pressure issues with relatively low mileage that have led to engine rebuild. I still owe on this vehicle through gm financial, and a $10,200 engine rebuild on top of that… not what I would expect out of GMC~.

58 Electrical System problem of the 2010 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 05/14/2023

Twice had to have wiring repaired because animals ate the wiring. Both were caused by gm using soy based insulation on wiring that made it a delicacy to the animals and caused them to eat through two wiring harnesses, one of which gm no longer makes. The other complaint is the timing belt has stretched and is now in need of replacement at a cost of $4500 to $5000.

59 Electrical System problem of the 2015 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 04/20/2023

Not really sure if it is electrical but the stabilitrak light came on and the car jerked and I could not go over 50 mph and that would be fine however when you are on a freeway and the speed limit is much greater you could cause and accident. I took the vehicle to a garage and they put it on there computer and reset it and it seemed to work ok until I again went on the freeway and the same thing happened. Again I took it back to the same garage and they recommended I take it to a GMC dealer which I did and they could not find the problem either after spending around $600. 00. I did take it to the GMC dealer which the vehicle make is a GMC. The problem, to the best of my knowledge, started about April 2023.

60 Electrical System problem of the 2015 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 03/31/2023

Never had issues on my vehicle I only have 42,000 miles when I brought my vehicle it only had 28,000 miles I had two recalls recently fixed 2/21/2023 a month later while driving my vehicle stopped and check engine light came on also there is a dinging sound whenever I get into my car which wasn’t there before I was in my parking lot parking my car when it shut off 3 times.

61 Electrical System problem of the 2016 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 03/11/2023

Thermostat/coolant sensor malfunctioning causing engine fan to constantly run as if the engine is over heating. Some engine exhaust door/flap is stuck open or closed causing check engine light to come on. And or the actuators doors are broken causing windows to fog and obstruct view. Not sure what would cause this issue but I have had to have work done on my vehicle twice for this issue within 3 years.

62 Electrical System problem of the 2020 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 03/07/2023

Radio goes from normal volume to as loud as possible while just driving. Scares ya to death! can't turn volume down with out 1st shutting off radio and turning it back on. Dealship stayed there isn't a problem they could find. Blu tooth cuts in and out and locks the radio up untill you shut vehicle off and restart. Shows you still on a call even though you have disconnected phone from radio. Volume issue has happened several times.

63 Electrical System problem of the 2019 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 02/24/2023

The infotainment system started acting strange. The volume adjusts itself. It starts blaring very loudly and has nearly caused several collisions and it continuously turns on and off. I can not use it at all.

64 Electrical System problem of the 2021 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 02/07/2023

Just purchased this vehicle has about 64500 miles on it. When accelerating between 40-55 (hard acceleration) my vehicle wobbles really bad, seems like a tire issue. Have had the front end looked at, and tires all balanced and inspected. Noting out of the ordinary. Then all of a sudden my rear view back up camera works, but my back up assist symbols are not showing/working. I checked the settings and they are turned on. To top off the cake, when the weather is cold outside my windshield wiper fluid will not spray from the front windshield or rear, then when it warms up or is parked in a garage it works again. I have made sure the correct wiper fluid is added as well so it does not freeze. But apparently it is getting stuck somewhere. . . . . .

65 Electrical System problem of the 2019 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 02/06/2023

The car cuts off during driving and when u crack it back up the dash light do not work. But then the dealership said its a known issues but the car just needs to be reset. . . . . . But cutting off while driving can be dangerous. It's something a car should not do.

66 Electrical System problem of the 2013 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 12/28/2022

Sudden excessive oil consumption, engine seized, oil pressure alert warning failed to alert driver that the car was bone dry with no oil, and the information screen indicated that 25% oil life was remaining, when the car was bone dry with no oil. Fyi - gm paid for 50% on costs of a replaced repurposed engine. And yet there is/was no recall? they should have paid 100%.

2017 GMC Terrain. VIN -2gkalmek3h6320983 on 12-26-2023 milage - 80694 catastrophic failure involving pcv valve and blown seal that destroyed the motor. So . . . Why or even how are we discussing rear main seal. This is completely unaccepta, ble. I have 2 kids starting to drive the repair estimate is $8. 000 to $10. 000.

68 Electrical System problem of the 2010 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 12/21/2022

The defroster/ radio control/ heating area stopped working. Upon visiting a mechanic was told they never seen this or heard of this happening before and quoted me over $1,000. 00 dollars to fix stating that due to federal law they have to give an estimate but this problem not being in their system they came up with an estimate based on parts and labor. Upon searching online I found a recall for this issue dating back to 2009 recall number was 09v489000 but was never informed about this and while looking up my car it’s not listed but being a safety issue should still be current which it is not.

69 Electrical System problem of the 2010 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 12/21/2022

My defrost system doesn't work. As I drive down the road my windshield fogs up andni can't get it to un fog at all or fast enough. Almost caused me to have an accident before christmas.

70 Electrical System problem of the 2011 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 12/15/2022

Ok so my 2011 GMC Terrain just went over 150,000 miles I bought this vehicle used from a dealership not knowing that there was a big lawsuit or that GMC continuted making this make and model knowing that it had a oil usage problem. So mmm mmm with that being said let's start with my vehicle uses oil, my vehicle idles high low and always rough at times, my service stabilitrak flashes, my motor sounds like a hemi kock knock knock instead of a 2. 4, doesn't matter where I'm at or where I'm going I let off of the gas and my car dies. . . . Let me clarify on that last one me and my 9 year old daughter we're headed home today let off the gas to go around a curve and a hill and you guesswd it my 2011 GMC Terrain died I lost all control and all power had no power steering and no brakes. . . I just thank jesus I wasn't speeding and that there was no oncoming traffic cuz I don't think me nor my 9 year old would have made it out ok. So thanks to whatever faulty motor engine or power train GMC has with this make and model putting people's safety and lives in danger due to these issues and only choosing certain vins eligible instead of all vins from 2011 GMC Terrains in my opinion is just choosing which owners survive because this make and model is dangerous to whoever drives it and to whoever meets it on the highway.
