GMC consumer relations subject: structural undercarriage safety defect – 2012 GMC Terrain sle vehicle information: year/make/model: 2012 GMC Terrain sle VIN: [xxx] mileage at purchase: 148,305 date of purchase: [xxx] location: rochester, new york I am filing a complaint regarding a severe undercarriage safety defect in my 2012 GMC Terrain sle. The rear undercarriage of this vehicle shows heavy structural corrosion on suspension brackets and mounts. The condition produces clanging noises during normal driving, and an independent licensed mechanic has refused to work on the vehicle because the suspension integrity is unsafe. When I returned the vehicle to the dealer, I observed additional brackets being attached under the rear subframe area, suggesting reinforcement of compromised structural points. This confirms that the corrosion directly affects suspension geometry, alignment, and stability. This corrosion is not cosmetic. It is advanced structural deterioration affecting the mounting points for trailing arms and lateral links. These components are critical to safe turning, stability, and control. The corrosion compromises the ability of the suspension to keep the wheels aligned, creating serious risks of loss of control or wheel separation. What makes this more alarming is that the vehicle passed a new york state safety inspection on 07/13/2025, yet within days a mechanic refused to perform unrelated service because of the undercarriage condition. This raises questions not only about inspection validity, but also about the underlying durability and corrosion. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

Wheel problem #2

When driving down the interstate the vehicle sways and makes steering challenging. Potential lack of control when hitting bumps on road at highway speeds. Taken to the dealership that sold the vehicle. They confirmed the issue. No warnings lights or notifications at this time.

Wheel problem #3

Brakes fade away after applying them. Tpms sensors are reading low tire pressure and are not accurate.

Wheel problem #4

While driving, the traction control light turns on. Then the gauges all start fluctuation. The dash reads service park assist. Then service stabilitrak. It does not run properly. It shifts hard. I’ve had it to the dealership twice now. The issue is still not resolved and it’s going back next Monday. I feel it will again not be resolved after reading multiple forums of others having the same issue after spending thousands of dollars. This is frightening and stressful to say the least. My car has less then sixty thousand miles on it. I should not be having this issue.

Wheel problem #5

I am having trouble with these things now. The powertrain especially I have not had accident yet but it keeps going dead on me in the middle of driving down road. Causing me to have to put in neutral and restart. At this time the steering goes out. This needs to be repaired before an accident does happen. The drivers seat does not move forward or backwards. The tire pressure warning does not warn until it is at 20 psi.

Wheel problem #6

My check engine light came on along with a a message that states reduced engine power and a message reading service stabilitrek when I was driving on the highway at 70 mph. This created suddenly jerking and slow acceleration so that I had to pull off the road. . Read more...

Wheel problem #7

We received a notice in the mail regarding our vehicle with our VIN #. And it mentioned our particular size engine had a recall for potential emissions part condition of degraded catalytic converter and/or oxygen sensors caused by excessive engine oil consumption affecting some vehicle from our year, make, and model. We were surprised to receive this notice because we always park in reverse and we had noticed how it was turning the curb side black coming from the tail pipe. We did receive one other notice before and took it to the dealership to have it maintenance but my honest opinion I do believe they did anything to our vehicle because it was running the same and also took it to midas after taking it to the dealership because it ran the same. Anyhow I hope upon receiving this other notice we can actually maybe get reimbursed and actually get it fixed finally.

Wheel problem #8

When reversing out of a parking spot, brakes failed causing accident. Multiple attempts to depress brake pedal with no braking. Hit a parked car. After shutting car off and attempting to move vehicle brakes did engage and respond correctly. Rear damage to Terrain occurred requiring towing.

Wheel problem #9

Only a month after purchasing my vehicle I started to feel a wobble in the front end when accelerating up hills and turning while on the gas. I took it to the dealer and they changed out the front tires stating that the problem had been fixed. Once again while driving the problem persisted. I took the car back to the dealer again and they said that they could not find anything wrong and suggested that I make an appointment to go for a drive with the mechanic to show them what is happening. I made an appointment. A day before the appointment I received a call from the dealership stating that an employee recently purchased the same car and they are having similar difficulties. They found online that GMC was requesting information from dealers about the problem and was told that I now need to wait for GMC to come up with a solution. My car shakes every time that I drive it, it's awful, and it only has around 6,000 miles on it. I'm not sure what to do because the dealership told me that I have to wait for a solution. They are not even trying to fix anything at this time. Please help.

Wheel problem #10

Showed stability track. I was driving on the highway when it showed service stability trak then engine power reduced. It took my speed from a 65 to 35 in an instant causing me to almost crash. Then the car started to jerk as I tried to drive to find somewhere safe.

Wheel problem #13

I've been noticing that driving in the snow the the wheels lock up up especially when I an taking a turn. I brought this back to carmax where I purchased the vehic and they stated that this is normal and there is nothing wrong with my antilock brakes.

Wheel problem #14

2012 GMC Terrain makes a clicking noise when pressing acceleration pedal. I habe changed oil, plugs and belts but still can't find source of tapping. Also my tires are new, less then a year and constantly show low pressure. I have checked for nails but none found.

Wheel problem #15

While driving on a snow- covered road with any amount of snow, the snow gets packed inside of the wheels and throws the wheel balance off causing the steering wheel to shimmy badly at highway speeds. I have to remove the snow pack evvery day, and I believe that this is an aerodynamic design flaw with the wheels where the snow doesn't get blown out of the wheel while the car is in motion.

Wheel problem #16

Tl the contact owns a 2016 GMC Terrain. The contact called on behalf of the driver. While the driver was at a stop sign and making a right turn, the front and rear passenger side tires exploded. The driver coasted the vehicle to the side of the road. The vehicle was repaired by the contact who replaced the tires. The vehicle was taken to ed morse Mazda GMC Buick of port richey (10237 us-19, port richey, FL 34668, (888) 852-6523) where it was diagnosed that an alignment was needed and the rear suspension needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and did not assist. The approximate failure mileage was 42,000.

Wheel problem #17

Extremely disappointed with my 2013 GMC Terrain. It has a 2. 4 cylinder engine that consumes too much oil between oil changes. A technical service bulletin was issued by gm for the problem but they have not done a full recall yet. Vehicle was stalling due to low oil issues. Intake solenoid had to be replaced because of low oil levels. Transmission fluid leaked from trans torque converter seal, left rear wheel hub had to be replaced due to bearings going bad all with just 52k miles. The engine specifically in my vehicle is a safety hazard/concern for anyone with a family. My wife is a nanny and does not drive the vehicle aggressively. I had driven this vehicle not very many miles on a new fresh oil change and the next time I went to check my oil the dipstick had no oil on it!! I was furious because there was not a light that indicator that came on in my vehicle to tell me I had low oil or anything!! also have a problem with the loud noise of tires when going down highway . . I did like this vehicle when I first got it but ever since then I have been disappointed in what is going on . .

Wheel problem #18

The tires on the car lose air pressure very quickly, even when the correct amount of air pressure is added. The car can set in the garage for a few days and one tire may have low air pressure and I fill it up to 32 psi. A week or less later, another tire will have low air pressure and so on. This is has never happened before with other gm SUV's I've owned.

Wheel problem #19

Tires constantly lose air, sometimes very suddenly and normally while the vehicle is in motion. Three of the tires have been affected.

Wheel problem #20

I was driving up a slushy hill and had to stop midway up the hill. Once I proceeded up the hill my car just spun tire,so I put the car in reverse and backed back down the hill. I then drove to work and parked my car. When I started my car to leave work the service awd alert came on. This is the second time since Dec. 2013 that the awd has gone out in my vehicle. I live in an area where snow is prevalent and purposely bought an awd vehicle for peace of mind and now for the second time it is out!.

Wheel problem #21

We were traveling northbound on us 84 in our 2011 GMC Terrain SUV near tesuque pueblo when the driver's side front alloy wheel disintegrated, slamming our vehicle into the concrete barrier dividing the traffic. The tire was fine but the wheel spokes were all broken into pieces. The lose tire bounced over the barrier crossing two lanes of oncoming traffic. No one was injured, but it could have been disastrous for us and others. The tesuque tribal police asked us"to do something" so we are asking your agency to "do something" before someone is seriously injured in the future. The tesuque tribal police station has the report (case 15tp009) at route 42, box 360-t, santa fe, nm 87506 (telephone 505-988-9119; fax 505-983-1883). Please investigate and warn about alloy wheels. Wheel problem #22

We bought my daughter a brand new GMC Terrain. Her old GMC had over 200,000 miles on it. She had a blown out tire prior to this incident. She was not driving fast and there was not reason for the tire to blow out. She is on her way home from a friends house and goes over a railroad track, not speeding. Another tire blows out. Has to get car towed. The tow car to gmn dealership. Days in shop airbar issues, tire had to be replaced. Takes over 4 days to be repaired has to go back. Over $1700. 00 bill. This is second time this has happened.

Wheel problem #23

When driving at very low speed there is a creaking sound which seems to be coming from the front side on the bottom. GMC has a service bulletin #pi1314:creak/poptype noise from right front of vehicle during low speed maneuvers-(sept. 17,2014). The fix involves ripping up carpet and cutting a hole approx. 1 ft. Square in front wall of interior. The seat has to be removed . The blower motor has to be removed. The right side front console trim plate and body hinge trim panel, then cutting a huge hole in the wall. I had a 2011 Terrain, which I purchased new and I never experienced this problem. The noise is unacceptable for a brand new vehicle.

Wheel problem #24

1. On August 17, 2014 my virtually new 2013 GMC Terrain with less than only a few thousand miles of use crashed due to the general motors corporation [GMC] GMC Terrain defect in design and manufacturing of this vehicle as confirmed by an official GMC dealer as recorded herein. The details of this incident are recorded below and represent only a small fraction of my many attempts by usps mail, email and telephone to contact GMC and to register my complaint. GMC has not made any meaningful response to my contacts and, in point of fact and in truth, GMC has acted to intimidate, terrorize and bully me! 2. During the morning of August 17, 2014 in my 2013 GMC Terrain while traveling south on I-95 in the right lane in virginia, near chester, virginia, the left front wheel suddenly separated and detached from this vehicle causing the steering of the vehicle to become disordered and deviate to the left and to crash into the concrete barrier separating the north bound lane of I 95 from the south bound lane. My damaged vehicle was eventually towed, after several hours, to a GMC dealership in chester, virginia and then to second GMC dealership in chester, virginia where temporary repairs were made after many delays and lack of availability of parts and other GMC glitches. After the temporary repairs were effected six days later, at 5:55 pm, my vehicle was returned to me. A copy of the repair facility of the GMC dealer: strosnider Chevrolet, inc. , attesting to these facts, is reprinted below wherein it is recorded: ¿the left front wheel, while driving, began to come loose causing the steering to be distorted resulting in the vehicle striking the concrete center divider and the wheel completely cast out from the vehicle and the ensuing body damage for your information and for inclusion in my file. ¿.

Wheel problem #25

Vehicle failed pennsylvania inspection due to sidewall cracking on all four oem michelin latitude tour p235/55r18 tires (front tires have 6/32" tread depth remaining, rear tires have 7/32" tread depth remaining). Vehicle deemed unsafe to drive until all tires are replaced due to risk of blowout. Michelin campaign #13t006000 does not cover this particular tire, even though sidewall defect is the same as that affecting those tires that are included in recall. Owner was offered a 60% discount on replacement tires from an authorized michelin retailer, which manufacturer's executive response manager called "fair. " michelin needs to acknowledge the defect by recalling and replacing these tires before an expectant mother like myself is killed driving on them. Either michelin stands by its workmanship and materials warranty or they do not.
