3 Transfer Case problem of the 2017 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 10/27/2019

I had my 2017 GMC Terrain denali for two years and have already experienced two serious issues. Issue #1-I noticed a burning smell, grinding noise, and hesitation when driving. I brought it to the dealership where I bought it and was told that there was a factory defect which caused something inside my transfer to bore a hole through it. Dealer could not get the part for 2 weeks. It was covered under my warranty. A month later while getting an oil change at a different auto shop, I was asked if I recently had work done only transmission because the entire thing was loose and moving, and the car did not drive right. I was told it was not safe to drive. I brought it back to the dealership and was told that they couldn't find anything. They tightened the bolts on the transfer case and charged me a $60 diagnostic fee (for their error). Issue #2-at 63,000 miles my wipers stopped working while I was driving at about 30mph on a busy street in the pouring rain (very scary). I brought it to the dealership and was told I needed a new wiper transmission and would cost $318 because my car was not part of the recall. I expressed concern that my 2yo. Car has now had two serious safety issues and was told cars have so many moving parts and pieces that it's a wonder more things weren't wrong with it. I do not feel safe driving this car and the service manager was condescending and couldn't care less. GMC needs to do something before somebody gets seriously hurt or worse.

Ruined my passenger side axel also when transfer case went $1137 was the bill. 500 for used case 16k 170 for axel 30 for fluid rest in labor. Should be a recall car sounded awful back up and in drive loss a bit of power when driving. Also.

5 Transfer Case problem of the 2012 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 06/28/2019

While driving a short distance on a city street I heard a thud followed by a grinding noise and lack of power. Vehicle was towed to a trusted mechanic that I have known and used for years. Diagnosed with a crack in the transfer case. Mechanic had difficulty finding a part and was informed by someone at the GMC dealer that this part was on back order because of an issue known by GMC but a recall had not been issued. New part would not be available for over a month and repairs were needed since it is my primary vehicle. A used part with a warranty was found and was installed for a total of $1500. Vehicle power train warranty was expired. Less than 3 months after transfer case was replaced with a used part - the replacement part cracked in the same exact spot as the original. Luckily, the part was still covered by a warranty but local mechanic recommended diagnosis by dealer to determine if there is an issue with the transmission. Contacted GMC to see if they were aware of the issue and they said they were not.

6 Transfer Case problem of the 2011 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 08/02/2017

I purchased my car brand new in April of 2011. I didn't even have it a year and I had to take it in 3 different times for stalling. The engine light never came on therefore they couldn't pull a code to know what exactly was wrong but because it was under warranty, they just started replacing parts. The very first time it stalled they told me to watch what kind of gas I was putting it. They told me to try only going to mobil, bp or shell. I shook my head the whole time they were saying this but to rule it out for them, that's what I did. Obviously that wasn't the problem. Then, upon a cold start, the engine was very loud and made a rattling noise. Again, no engine light. The whole time I've had the vehicle it hesitates when pulling into traffic sometimes. Sometimes the kick back it gives off is so big that it actually jerks your body forward. I've had the car for 6 years and have over 10 receipts from dealerships for taking it in over the yrs. They have "replaced/fixed" cam auctor solonoids, actuator, tensioner, timing chain, catalytic converter, gasket, manifold and piston. . To name a few. The other day I noticed a slight grinding noise when turning right. I went straight home and was going to have my friend listen to it so we could figure out where it was possibly coming from. Within 2 hrs just sitting in the driveway the grinding became 20x worse and extremely loud! I couldn't even back it out of my driveway without it sounding like my whole entire engine was going to fall out. We were thinking it was the transfer case/transmission. I had to have it towed to the dealership where they called me a few hrs later only to confirm it was the transfer case and it will be $2,400 bc it's no long under warranty. I have numerous receipts showing ongoing issues with this and other things. I'm furious and disappointed. I bought a new car to feel safer in and I haven't felt that once!.
