1 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 06/08/2023

The contact owns a 1999 Honda Accord. The contact stated while driving at approximately 40 mph, he felt that the steering wheel would vibrate. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The contact had the vehicle alignment checked by an independent mechanic who determined that the passenger side subframe had become badly rusted which was throwing the vehicle alignment off. The mechanic advised that the a/c drain tube drained over the subframe on the passenger side and could have been causal in the extensive rusting of the subframe. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 80,000.

2 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2019

My 1999 Honda Accord v6 has a rusted subframe on the passenger side. This appears to be caused by dripping water from the air conditioner. The drivers side subframe is in perfect condition. A simple internet search uncovers several news stories and official inquiries to Honda for an identical problem. Further no dealer or mechanics until a few days ago reported the problem to me. After seeing the extensive rust missing sections it's impossible to not see the damage when changing the oil. Even I can tell there is a problem. My car is now inoperable because it's not safe. At the moment it only has 110k miles or approx 6k a year. I don't see a recall for this yet the issue seems common.

3 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2018

The front subframe is rusted through on one side only. It's the passenger side where the ac drain hose dips on the frame. The car is in otherwise good shape and doesn't present any real issues but the rust is so bad that it is making the car very unsafe.

4 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 08/16/2018

Forward cradle subframe (rear beam) rusted out. With the number of complaints that I have read. I was wondering if Honda has had a recall with the issue?.

5 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 10/06/2017

Began hearing unusual noise from right front tire area when turning. Upon investigating, discovered that the right front tire was worn excessively and that the right front sub-frame is rotted out. No other part of the frame is rotted only the right front. Apparent cause is a design flaw where the a/c drain tube is located directly over this sub-frame and causes it to prematurely rust and rot out. I cannot get an alignment because the sub-frame is too weak. I cannot drive the car because the sub-frame will likely fail causing loss of control of the vehicle.

6 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 05/07/2017

I recently bought a car for my daughter and was going to do my brakes on it and noticed the passenger side subframe is rotted out doe to where the air conditioner hose sits this is a saftey hazard due to the motor can drop out or my new driver could get into a accident and the drivers side has no rust very concerend why Honda has not done a recall on this it is all over utube due to failure of this part Honda needs to be looked into for not looking at there veichles properly you see it when you do an oil change someone is going to seriously get hurt or die please have them recll this safety hazard for all Honda owners.

7 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 04/17/2017

Rust corrosion bad seriouly due to ac unit and yrs of driving call 3307327147.

8 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 12/20/2016

My daughter was home from school and complained of s clunking sounds when turning from the right front. I removed the wheel and found the subframe was rusted out on the rear on both sections. I did some research and found this to be a common problem on these 1998 to 2002 Honda Accords. The left side was fine. This seems to be due the air conditioning condensate dripping on the frame area. Luckily this was found in time before an accident or worse could have occurred.

9 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 10/17/2016

1999 Accord 4 dr 3. 0 with major rust in front right sub-frame under the ac drip hose. Major failure to that part is anytime now. The other side in same area is rust free. Car is 98% rust free. Garaged, 118k currently. Googling this issue pops up many complaints of this defect!.

10 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 01/25/2016

The a/c compressor drips directly on the subframe, which rusted it completely apart. Which in turn, destroyed the suspension. My car is now waiting to be towed back to my house, totally not driveable. I was on a city street. Normal turn around a corner. If I would have been injured, I would be filing a lawsuit against Honda for extremely poor engineering and lack of thinking this horrible design flaw through completely. Please contact me ASAP at 330-615-9869.

11 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 08/18/2015

I have a 1999 Honda Accord and I jus paid to get front headlight wire replaced because I could not use low beam lights only high beam. Light is working now but there is a suspension and/or electrical problem I need to check. The heat/air doesnot come on? is this car safe to drive?.

12 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 03/30/2015

The issue is not really "suspension", but sub-frame. It is a part called the rear beam and it supports the rear engine mount. Part number 50200-s84-a00 has rusted entirely through. As numerous people have reported online, it is true that an a/c drain hose drips right onto this piece of sub-frame and completely rusted it through until it broke on the passenger side. The other areas of this part and the attached front beam are in fine condition and the repair looks to be about $2000. I have some pictures if needed.

13 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 12/15/2014

I heard a knock in the front suspension and took the Accord into an auto shop that was open on Sunday. They put it on the lift and found the engine subframe was rusted through on the passenger side. They said the car was unsafe to drive and would require a new subframe. It's the only rust on the car. Research online found that in 2012 the center for automotive safety identified this as a persistent problem with Accords, as Honda designed the ac to vent condensation directly onto the subframe. They asked Honda to do a voluntary recall, as both Toyota and Ford did with similar issues for similar years. Honda's customer service said that they have no knowledge of this being a problem, and denied the recall.

14 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 06/06/2014

The front cross beam that holds the suspension has rusted through on the right side of the car. This has weakened the frame/engine cradle to the point the car is no longer safe to drive. In checking it may have been caused by a badly designed ac drain system.

15 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 05/26/2014

On may 26th, 2014 I had my 1999 Honda Accord lx sedan in for an oil change. The technician noticed that the front subframe, passenger side has rusted to the point that the subframe will need replaced. The subframe is free of any significant rust otherwise. I was told and have read that this issue has been caused by an improperly placed ac drain hose. The car's undercarriage is virtually rust free as well, and is frequently washed during winter months.

16 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 11/18/2013

The vehicle is unsafe to drive as the sub frame is rusted due to the air conditioner drain. Engine runs great but the design is flawed.

17 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 11/12/2013

While having routine service done at a Honda dealer, my daughter was told the car needed some serious front end work. She was not given an itemized list of the problem by the dealer. When I had my local mechanic look at the front end he said part of the frame on the right side was badly rusted. While searching on line for parts I was made aware that this problem was quite common for Hondas of similar make and year. Visual inspection of the lower right sub frame is disintegrated to the point that the vehicle is unsafe to drive. Other parts do not appear affected.

18 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 08/20/2013

When I purchased my car the ac was not working so I had it checked and was told that it was not connected and was told that Honda's have been having problems with the frames rotting out due to the location of the ac drain. Upon having the frame inspected was told that my vehicle would not pass another state inspection. My car is in great shape body wise with no other rust. I was told that this is a big safety issue and upon researching on line have seen that numerous people are having the same problems. Just want to know why Honda is not being held responsible for these repairs. Honda has always been a car of choice for my family but after this I will never purchase another Honda.

19 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 07/30/2013

1999 Honda Accord sub-frame crack from air conditioning drain. Part number 50200-s84-a00 front (rear beam) of the sub-frame has rusted and cracked. The crack is located on the right side of the car directly below where the air conditioning drain tube drips onto the sub frame. All other areas of sub-frame and undercarriage of the car are in great condition. This rusted area is obviously the result of a design flaw with the air conditioning drain constantly wetting the sub-frame. Rusted sub-frame found at 210,000 miles but damage obviously occurred much earlier. Need Honda to recall and replace sub-frame.

20 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 04/13/2013

Repair shop said passenger side of engine subframe is rusted out, rest of subframe is okay. The is apparently a very common complaint for these cars related to the location of a/c drain hose. This is an obvious design flaw and should be corrected by Honda corp. These vehicles should be recalled immediately given the mounting evidence of this flaw before some poor unaware soul is hurt.

21 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 08/10/2005

The subframe, brake lines, fuel lines, and suspension, on the front passenger side, have all rusted out to the point of failure due to a poorly designed a/c drain hose. The dealer should have noticed this was a problem during any of the later service visits. Honda should take action on this dangerous situation.

22 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 10/04/2002

While driving vehicle vibrated.

23 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 06/13/2002

There were problems with the thermostat, brakes, engine light was intermittent, overheating, squealing while driving, the windshield molding at the upper left corner of the window, thumping noise while driving, maintenance light was inoperative, steering wheel vibrated, the abs light was intermittent, and the tires were replaced early. Mr scc.

24 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 05/10/1999

A banging noise and a vibration are experienced when the engine is started. It happens in every new Honda Accord lx 1999 and 2000 year car as the dealer let me tested these cars in stock. It is not only uncomfortable but also dangerous because noise and vibration looses screws and connections for the long run. If this is not corrected, some connections may drop and cause accidents.

25 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 11/14/1998

I was told this will enable a vehicle to run off the road and hit a tree if falling asleep at the wheel. I do not have the vehicle. The company was not able to correct the problem and told me that all the new vehicles have a pull or drift. The GMC also driven the vehicle, and noticed my complaint. That was when he mentioned that statement to me. So 3 months later I'm in a lease because the problem was not fixed and there was not a replacement vehicle to place me in. I'm not really having a choice. I ended up getting a vehicle that I really didn't want. Having a 1996 Accord vehicle for 2 years I had no problem with pulling or anything. I am so sorry I traded my vehicle in. Since they wanted to charge me to give me my vehicle back I am now in a very unfortunate situation.
