One problem related to engine rattling and whining sounds has been reported for the 1998 Honda Civic. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Vehicle makes strange pinging/rattling noises while accelerating. Only found when engine is warm and vehicle is moving(in gear). Noise most prevailant just prior to reaching recommended shift point for 5 speed transmission. Honda factory troubleshooter calls this strange noise normal.
