2017 Honda Civic ex hatchback. 22371 miles. Rt. Frt. Pass. Air bag will not deploy in event of accident due to " Smart design ". Per Honda dealer, seat sensor is not detecting weight threshold when anyone sits who are not heavy enough. My wife is 5' 4" & approx. 117 lbs. I am 5' 5" & approx. 115 lbs. Neither one of us can sit & turn off srs off warning. Also per dealer this is a safety design as if airbag deploys the force can injure or worse the person sitting there if not of correct weight. My wife will not be protected at any time she sits in front. Dealer advised that seat be moved far back as possible or have her sit in the back seat. Also, the seat side air bag and/or side curtain system should still provide some protection. Otherwise, no trouble code (s) are present & system operating normally & within design parameters. Not comfortable with my wife being unprotected in event of incident & she is not looking forward to being required to sit in the back seat.

The contact called valley Honda (4173 ogden avenue, aurora, IL 60504; 630-851-5700) and was informed that his insurance company needed to investigate and diagnose the failure. Passenger air bag will not deploy by design when someone who does meet weight criteria is seated. This is a 2017 Honda Civic 5-door purchased new in Dec. 2016 & has had this issue since purchase. Per Honda & Honda servicing dealers the sensor is designed to deactivate passenger air bag if weight threshold not met. My wife is 5 ft. 5 in. & approx. 125 pounds, & whenever she is seated the air bag indicator is off. Per Honda & Honda servicing dealer the 4 ways to deal with this are : 1. Move front seat all the way back ( no air bag function ). 2. Have her sit in back seat. 3. Not have her in car at all. 4. Get another vehicle that has functioning passenger air bag. These are official repair solutions per Honda tech support & Honda servicing dealer.
Passenger front airbag is deactivated when my wife or I sit in the seat. Per Honda dealer neither one of us meet sensor criteria to activate air bag. American Honda will not assist nor respond to this issue. The servicing dealer recommends having wife move seat all the way back or sit in the back seat. This issue is considered normal & within design criteria. Passenger front airbag will never deploy in an accident whenever someone sits & weight does not activate airbag.
