45 problems related to engine and engine cooling have been reported for the 2017 Honda Civic. The most recently reported issues are listed below. Please also check out the statistics and reliability analysis of the 2017 Honda Civic based on all problems reported for the 2017 Civic.
The 10th generation Honda Civic's have multiple extended warranties from Honda for bad air compressors and condensers. And the a/c evaporator needs to be included in this. My car only has 60,000 miles on it, is not driven daily, and my a/c evaporator is leaking freon due to a bad part. The parts for these a/c systems were designed poorly and degrade too quickly.
The head gasket failed on my 2017 Honda Civic after 110,000 miles I had the Honda dealership of decatur fix the head gasket and it failed again after 36,000 miles this appears to be a massive issue Honda is having with these cars. And mine and other’s safety were put into risk because the car went into limp mode while I was driving on the interstate and yes the dealership confirmed that the head gasket has failed again after replacement and no it has not been inspected by anyone yet and no there was no warning of it failing before the car went into limp mode while I was doing highway speeds.
The contact owns a 2017 Honda Civic. The contact stated that while starting the vehicle, the electronic power steering, evaporative emission control system, check engine, and antilock braking system lights were illuminated; however, the contact had not experienced any failures or malfunctions while operating the vehicle. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer to be diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 102,192.
I am filing a safety complaint regarding my 2017 Honda Civic hatchback and the dangerous issue related to its air conditioning (a/c) system — a problem affecting many Civic owners nationwide. I initially brought my vehicle to Honda city chicago for a Honda “campaign” repair (a term they use instead of calling it a recall) in 2023 and again this year, related to the a/c system. I was told the issue would be resolved. However, after agreeing to an optional transmission oil change they recommended, I was later told the a/c still wasn’t fixed — and that I now needed to pay $400 for a diagnostic. That diagnostic revealed the actual problem: a locked a/c compressor. (which they knew they just wanted the money) this defect is not just an inconvenience — it’s a serious safety hazard. When the a/c is turned on, the locked compressor causes the engine to shake violently and stall completely. This happened to me at a red light; the car shut off, became unresponsive, and I was stuck blocking traffic. If this had occurred while driving at higher speeds, the consequences could have been catastrophic. Many Civic owners have reported similar compressor failures leading to engine stalls and unsafe driving conditions. Honda is aware of this issue but continues to treat it as isolated rather than a systemic defect. I urge the NHTSA to open a formal investigation into this widespread and dangerous issue involving locked a/c compressors in 2016–2020 Honda Civics. A safety recall is warranted before more drivers are put at risk or harmed due to this known defect.
Cold start up issue where vtc actuator is rattling and or grinding. This could potentially cause engine failure while starting or driving the vehicle. No check engine light or oil light. Vtc rattle/grind occurred for 3-4 seconds and then stopped.
The chain stretched and camshaft tensioner had to be replaced. The tech said this could only happen with low or insufficient oil, but every oil change on this car was done on time. There was a previous settlement because this engine has a known defect where fuel gets into the oil. Honda refused to honor the extended warranty agreed to in the settlement because the error codes that came up were po341 cmp sensor a and ckp sensor incorrect phase detected) and we had to pay $2,348. 30 for repair of parts (chain, camshaft tensioner) that should have lasted the life of the vehicle without replacement.
Had to get the fuel injectors replaced after faulty emissions notifications. Now the car stalls from start at a stop light or stop sign. The car also stalled in stop and go traffic on the highway. We have not been driving it over the winter. It's dangerous!.
We are experiencing a technical issue with the vehicle, which appears to be caused by a software or component error, rather than user error. This situation has led to the car starting unexpectedly and presenting challenges that could compromise safety while driving. Unfortunately, there has yet to be a recall or resolution communicated by the authorities.
My Honda recently has had 10 warning lights pop up went in for oil change they couldn’t tell me the issue came back for another diagnosis and they are saying the engine has oil dilution. This is a known issue for this engine. But why does it affect abs, traction control, wiper sensor, auto high beam detection. , all of the lane assist , cruise control, early warning crash detection? this can be dangerous when you can’t quickly get the car into a dealership. And if it’s know issue they need a recall or free fix.
Car fuel injectors will fail and cause misfiring. Dangerous to drive due to engine running rough. Unusual for fuel injectors to go out so soon especially when driven with care and using correct fuel octane.
One of the piston rods broke and went through the block. Oil had heavy odor of gasoline.
The contact owns a 2017 Honda Civic. The contact stated that while his son was driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle lost motive power. The exhaust system, power steering, brake assist, power brake, hill assist, and traction control warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the turbo and engine needed to be replaced. The dealer requested oil change records. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 75,000.
Fuel getting into oil.
19-033 19-038 Honda sb extended powertrain warranty. Included dtc codes for misfire. Dealer refuses to honor warranty still have code for misfire. It's not fixed Honda has multiple issues across all model lines w fuel injectors it causes all warnings lights to go off on dash. Honda has case number already. Cylinder 4 misfire cylinder 1-3 injectors bad. When did cars work with out injectors? it's a powertrain product. No where on sb does it state or imply certain conditions also Honda in 2019 sent all owners 2016-2018 letters extending warranty. Especially w the misfire codes per sb. To e ensure customer confidence I in our product, Honda is extending ther powertrain warranty from the original 5 years/ 60,000 miles to 6 years with unlimited mileage from the original sale date this warranty extension applies to any engine 6 components, such as camshafts , rocker arm assemblies, or spark plugs, requiring repair due to damage resulting from hose concerns identified in the first paragraph. The ecu and tcm software is covered under the vehicle's emissions 5 warranty beyond 6 years. Irony same motor family is in the fit. Exact same code sb is. . . . Replace injectors 20-002.
Check engine lights display periodically. The main one involves the fuel injectors. It has been an on going problem for 6-8 months. When I contacted the dealership I was told the part is not available nationwide at this time and not sure when it will become available. While driving the car can go into "limp" mode where it doesn't let you go above 30 mph. This problem first started approximately October 2022 after having the vehicle just over 7 months. When I contact the dealership I was told there was nothing they could do but wait for the part to come in. Meanwhile I am paying for a vehicle that is not safe to drive , yet has no recalls on it. I was told by the dealership that they have several vehicles at the auto auction that have the same issue that are not selling. I don't understand why Honda has not had a recall on this part. I am stuck with a vehicle ,my only means of transportation, still making payments, and it sits in the garage. Please let me know if there's anything else you need from me.
My car has a significant engine oil dilution problem. Gasoline is starting to mix with the oil and it could potentially cause problems or complete engine failure. I am having issues with performance in cold weather due to this problem.
These cars have horrendous ac issues. A spotlight needs to be on put on it. Broken ac can subject drivers to dangerously high temperatures in the cabin, even if the windows are rolled down in some climates. Honda, the maker of these vehicles, is still answerable for the supplier of the compressor/ac system, keihin's, failures. There are many of us, but we haven't been able to connect the dots to see how many have truly been affected. I nearly suffered heatstroke driving this car. Was dizzy the night of at home, with outdoor temperatures reaching triple digits (fahrenheit).
I have oil dilution in my 2015 Honda Civic ex-t VIN 2hgfc1f38hh650552. Dealer performed the fixes. The next time I had the oil sample checked it was worse. The oil smells like a weedeater. I am at 13. 72% fuel in the oil. Very rich. I live in alabama where it is hot. I only drive long distances to and from work on the interstate. I need help. Honda is doing nothing. They are not telling the dealer anything or sharing any specs as acceptable percentage fuel in the oil. It is a coverup. Tsbs have been done and engine checked and injectors are good. Please advise.
10. 55% fuel was found in the oil according to a sample that was taken. Took to dealer and called Honda. Dealer was told to perform bulletin 18-137 I think. Dealer said was done and changed the oil also. Took a sample at 30% oil life after the fix and now there is 13. 72% fuel in the oil. Took back to dealer they called Honda engineers and was told it was normal and that was on the low side 13. 72%. Was not able to do anything. This is a coverup. You can smell fuel in the oil and oil is high on the dipstick when you check it and you can smell when driving.
My vehicle has oil dilution issue. The engine releases toxic gas from the engine compartment to interior of the car though the air duct. This gives me major headache and forces me to drive with my widow open as to not worsen my asthma issues. After checking the oil dipstick I can smell the gas aroma coming from the oil. This is a serious environmental issue and an even greater health concern of mine. I pray my health does not deteriorate to where I develop cancer from the toxins.
Coils and spark plugs getting rust/wet by water intrusion causing emisions problems the car is unable to drive.
Air conditioner fails to cool and instead blows hot air. Honda authorized service technician has confirmed that a defective air conditioner compressor has caused freeon leakage from the compressor's main shaft throughout the system.
My son and I purchased a certified pre-owned 2017 Honda Civic sedan on Dec 3rd from Honda of lisle IL. The car was purchased with 22,100 miles. My son was driving on Dec 10th and stopped for gas for the first time. He got back in the car and started it up. He noticed the engine light came on. He immediately cam home and called for an appointment for the next day to have it checked out at the dealer. As he was driving to the dealer he got about 1 mile down the road when all of a sudden black smoke started pouring out of the engine compartment and the car froze up and immediately burst into flames. Thankfully it happened on a side street as he was slowing down for a traffic light. I had it towed to the dealer. Even though there is a law that they need to take it back within 15 days or less than 500 miles, they essentially told me it wasn't their problem and I needed to get my insurance involved. A fire inspector hired by the insurance company looked at the totaled vehicle and suspected the fire started near the battery. My insurance company informed me that they would have to have a fire engineer inspect it at a cost of $5,000 therefore they will not pursue further. This should not have happened to a certified car with 22k miles. Full video https://youtu. Be/ttsvy7zgmw8.
A/c stop blowing cold air. Took to Honda dealership for inspection turns out it is the evaporator has a leak. Warranty doesn't cover it anymore. 2,200 to replace it's disappointing newer model having issues like these. My 2010 Honda Civic blows cold after 10 year. Honda I hope there is something you can do for your customer that are having these same issues, we believed in Honda but sadly it is disappointing.
I changed the oil at a dealer in early Aug, but after driving for about one month, the oil dilution issue happens again. I can smell gas in the oil, and the dipstick showed that the oil level is far beyond the expected range.
Sometimes, when trying to start the vehicle, it will not crank and start. The electric power will come on (dash board icons, headlights, etc. ), but it will not crank. It takes from 2 to 7 turns of the key, before it cranks and starts. This problem occurs sometimes once a week, sometimes 2 or 3 times. I took it to a Honda dealer for repair. However, on the day I took it in, of course, it was working fine. The service manager said that their computer could not diagnosis it, unless the problem occurred while it was hooked to the computer. He told me to bring it back when the problem got worse, or the car would not start at all. I have not returned to the dealer yet. This problem began in early July of this year. The vehicle had approximately 36,000 miles on it.
On June 13th, less then a month after it was inspected/serviced from the Honda dealership on may 21st, my 3 year old car busts up in flames. As we were driving down a rural road on a clear day going about 65, a spark flew from the engine. The oil pressure light comes on followed by loss of power to the car. Luckily we pulled over just in time to watch the car go up in flames and explode. I have contacted 3 dealerships, including their service team, Honda financial, Honda general, and the Honda plant in indiana. Every one of them has shown no compassion or interest in finding out why this happened. Does it take someone to die to take this serious? and my insurance is taking their time since it is a total loss.
Air conditioning is blowing hot air, possibly due to refrigerant leak. Finding many other similar complaints from new Honda Civic owners.
Woke up at 4:30 am on this day July 18,2019 saw that my car was on fire (it started under the hood). It was parked in the driveway.
I do oil change by myself. Here I am reporting fuel dilution of engine oil issue on my car. The second last time of my car's oil change was on March 16 2019. I followed the manual strictly to perform the oil change as well as the oil filter replacement. I added 3. 7 qt of new motor oil (mobil 1 advanced fuel economy full synthetic 0w20), which is the volume specified on the manual book. Last weekend on July 7 2019 I did oil change again, still following the manual book strictly. What made me concerned was that the volume of that used motor oil was clearly greater than what I added on March 16. The motor oil I purchased came with sealed bottles, each containing 1 qt volume. I was surprised to find that the used oil fulfilled 4 bottles, which was 10% more than what I added 3 months before. This was the solid evidence that something went into the motor oil, which I believed was gasoline, because the used oil had a gasoline smell. During this period, I only chose top tier gasoline brands and added regular #87 which was suggested by Honda, therefore the quality of gasoline I added was no problem; I didn't see loss of engine coolant, brake fluid, transmission fluid during this time.
At cold start, the idling engine shakes the steering wheel, dashboard, and much of the cabin. It feels like a poorly seated motor mount. I've driven Civics my whole life and have never felt a shake like this one. I took it to the local Honda dealership and left it overnight in hopes of replicating the cold start. They could not reproduce the problem but I'm beginning to worry.
Tl the contact owns a 2017 Honda Civic. The contact stated that the vehicle would not start. The contact attempted to start the engine five times, but was unsuccessful. Several unknown warning indicators were illuminated, including five "electric parking brake problem", "vehicle stability assist problem", and "electric power steering problem" messages that appeared. The dealer and manufacturer were not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 60,000.
My oils is being diluted by fuel strong oder of gas from oil. Shows that it is over filled . When it is cold out side my engine feels like it is stuttering and it starts to click under acceleration. My car has already had fuel rail and injectors replaced under warranty for misfiring issues and my car has shut off on me multiple times while driving on busy 50 mph roads and had to coast into a parking lot. Every Honda dealer I've brought it to says this is normal and will not admit that my oil is diluted. But I heard them saying how bad the oil smell of gas.
Vibration in engine.
2017 hatchbacks with the 1. 5 liter engine 4 cylinder didn’t get an extended warranty yet all other Hondas with this engine did because of problems but not the hatchback when same parts and same problems I never want to buy a new Honda again . Had to get a coolant flush not soon after I bought it because car was over heating yet that’s all they did never looked by into why and then problem after problem . A night mare buying a new Honda . Seen many videos and read many threads of people with same year and sa b me complaints and I’ve contacted a lot of people and no place knows why the hatchbacks weren’t covered but other cars same engine same problem was. Had to rebuild engine and replace turbo at 103,00 miles after having to replace spark plugs every 7 thousand miles the whole time I owned it and adding coolant to it when dealership said it want a problem and did nothing about it and now at 130000 some miles car just keeps over heating and dealership just told me I need a new engine and wouldn’t tell me why and dealership never been helpful at all. Just look at my car and engine online and all the complaints. Then being told issue is fixed with an ecu update just don’t drive the car short distances with a lot of stop and goes only drive long distances and don’t drive in winter time . I lost it because how is that the problem being fixed . And all the carbon build up is insane. And the oil dilution problem still exists. All these defects and problems with a new car is insane . I figured a new car would be better but of course first new vehicle I buy is a lemon and all these problems and Honda won’t do right by it . Car also going into what I call limo dick mode in middle of 4 lane high way is dangerous and doing that when car was under 20,000 miles and always has . Also parking brake still messes up even though it was recalled the problem still exists . Him screen occasionally freezes or goes blank or don’t work . Just non stop problems since bought new.
