1 Equipment problem of the 2025 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 08/18/2025

While driving down the highway, my sunroof suddenly and unexpectedly shattered without any external impact with no warning. My safety was put at risk because the glass exploded all over me and could’ve caused an accident had I been around other drivers. The dealer told me it was hard to determine if this was a defect or something hit my car and stated I need to bring it into them specifically for inspection, I haven’t done so yet expecting that this will result as my fault so I’m taking precaution before going there.

2 Equipment problem of the 2007 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 02/01/2019

The ignition is locked cant turn the key over and the ima light comes on.

3 Equipment problem of the 2006 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 01/22/2019

Was driving on the freeway when suddenly my car engine shuts off. There is still power too the car but the speed odometer doesn't work, along with whatever is used to monitor the milage I have traveled. I have to switch it too low gear in order too keep it going or the car stops even when im going 65. It has happened now multiple times and when shifted into park it won't shift out of park for several hours. I have to disconnect the battery terminals too reset the codes because if I don't ill end up sitting in my car several hours before I can start moving again. The lights that illuminate are the brake system, check engine light, and ima system all amber. If I didnt act as I did this time it would have been like the first time where I actually did stop on the freeway causing for a traffic jam, not only was that embarrassing it was also scary being stuck in the furtherest left lane with no shoulder on the left side too pull off the freeway and all the cars speeding at 65 mph or more by me .

4 Equipment problem of the 2009 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 01/13/2018

"takata recall" while dealer has told me air bag was completed, it was sold to me with an open entry or questionable completion. Upon driving the car I found it felt shaky & was told they would fix any problems however now that I have taken it in twice and it has stayed there over a week, and then taken home (without my approval) by service manager, when I still complained that it doesn't feel so stable and maybe we should call off the deal or trade for another car, I was told. . "deal is done, the car is yours, we've spent $$ to fix things". My response was "whatever items done were items that should have been done pre-sale and were agreed to be done". The axle ended up being bad and something still feels like the car staggers however I got tired of complaining. I'm not entirely sure that I'm driving a safe car and that it was not in an accident. Not sure what to do as now I owe a loan & have been driving car. My main concern has always been safety. I brought all this to the table pre purchase. I brought car in again because it was shaky, struggling & staggering to go up hill, would not properly accelerate, and was having a burnt smell. What they found was bad axle and something with rotor (which was not caught on first time I brought in that it spent a week there). Car fax did not indicate accident but drivability seems questionable. I bought car 12/31/17, brought back in first week to complete the open items (one being the air bag issue) I brought all concerns up pre-purchase w/agreement they would take care of all. I brought it in & it remained about a week. Picked up 01/13/18. Had to bring in again 01/30/18 due to staggering & burnt smell. Picked up 2/02/18 & when I brought up that I think we should just trade car as I felt maybe I got burned, they said: car is yours, you bought it (in a nutshell). I have all emails of concerns brought up. Just want to be sure.

5 Equipment problem of the 2005 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 12/01/2016

Takata hear replacements are defective how do you find out if replacement is defective have only right eye and if injured may not be able to drive new headlights are a menace some now with 8 lights and one where all green. They are not aimed on road but so strong in car can read some set so they are higher that windows. I slow down to 20mph to be able to see safely either way others do not like that speed in 50mph zone but not safe to drive when lights like an interrogation room blinding you. If you need 8 lights you should not be driving and these beady start white lights are blinding. Need to go back to two lights shined on the road not 4-8 in different colors the height of the window aimed at the interior like a trooper light.

6 Equipment problem of the 2010 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 06/05/2016

On June 5th I was driving in motion on van ness Ave in san francisco California and suddenly I was not able to accellerate to keep up with the speed of traffic and started slowing down unable to continue. Traffic was stop-and go. People swerved around me causing issue. I managed to turn the car off and on again, and pulled over to the side. I restarted the car again and was able to slowly accellerate bringing it into the Honda dealership just 3 blocks away at market and van ness. This was Sunday. On Monday they called me and assured that the vehicle had been "fixed" due to a software bug. They said that this happens all the time and it will be fixed with this update. They also said my battery need replacing and they charged me to replace the battery. It seemed to be ok for the last few months - but then the same thing happened to me again this past weekend while I was driving home. Turning on and off the car fixed it such that I was able to drive the last 8 blocks home. I'm no longer feeling safe to drive my car.

8 Equipment problem of the 2003 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 12/01/2015

Had to replace the hybrid battery on my civic at 82000 miles. Now the very expensive ($3-4000) hybrid battery has gone out again at 149220 miles. The batteries Honda is using for these vehicles are lemons. That's two batteries I have had to replace in less than 150000 miles! the hybrid batteries on the Toyota prius have average life spans of 200,000 miles+. Honda's don't last even half of that. Called Honda and they refused any help. This has also happened to many other Honda Civic Hybrid owners. Can't drive car anymore without paying thousands for another hybrid battery.

9 Equipment problem of the 2014 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 05/01/2015

When bought new. In just a few days (low tire warning came on) didn't say what tire, so I checked all of them. None checked low. Dealer reset something and stayed off until tire rotation then it happen again. Dealer reset again. Now it comes after starting about 5 times. I keep driving but worry about the warning message, and think it may be dangerous. Came on when stationary and in motion.

10 Equipment problem of the 2005 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 03/21/2015

The vehicle shutters during initial takeoff from a stop. It feels like the car wants to start from second or third gear. I have checked all the fluids and they appear to be at normal and acceptable operating levels. The lack of acceleration and the hesitation from the car make it difficult to merge into traffic. This is truly a safety concern when turning from 2-way stop signs or turning right at a stop light. Oncoming traffic could be coming at excessive speeds and with the slow acceleration and shutter, I fear this vehicle's cvt will fail.

11 Equipment problem of the 2004 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 03/04/2015

I bought a 2004 Honda Civic Hybrid from efficiency motor cars on 5 may 2013, paying $4600 up front and the final $200 less than a month later. The car has had problems (starting problems, battery replaced twice, wrong wheel size when bought, broken wheel stud, short in the electrical system that's been hard to find and finally the cars wheel rolled off the car when I was leaving arrest area) since I bought it. There hasn't been a straight month where the car has been reliable I ran into problems this week when attempting to get the car insured. Every insurance company that I applied to will not insure my car because of a salvage/rebuilt title of which I was previously unaware. I have not received the title, though I have asked efficiency motor cars for it several times. After becoming frustrated with efficiency motor cars, I made an attempt at getting the car’s title myself from the department of driver services. When inquiring about my car’s title I discovered the title was being held by the dds because efficiency motor cars had reported the wrong odometer reading. The former reading being 159,xxx from the previous title holder and 148, 074 when sold to me. (maybe a fraudulent roll back?) this is also how I discovered the car had previously been salvaged, which was not disclosed to me. So, when I finally get my title, the title will be salvage/rebuilt.

12 Equipment problem of the 2005 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 03/02/2015

My 2005 Honda Civic Hybrid is experiencing a shudder problem when accelerating from a stop and when coming to a stop, either in city traffic or the highway on/off ramps. I have taken it to a mechanic who says he can¿t fix it. I fear for the one time my car doesn't accelerate from a stop and I get hit. Also, when I am breaking in traffic the break seems to release a little which causes the car to lurch forward. From what I have seen on this site and the internet, I am not the only one having these problems. I hope the issues that consumers are having with this vehicle are addressed and fixed before there are any deaths.

13 Equipment problem of the 2006 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 01/09/2015

While driving at about 20 mph, the transmission disegaged from the engine. When accelerator was pressed, the engine would freely rev to the redline but there was no movement of the car. The car was going up a hill when this happened. The car was rolled backward, almost into traffic at a busy intersection. Car had to be towed to the dealer. At the dealer big island Honda, they did not experience the malfunction and could not solve the problem. We drove the car home. The next day we drove it again and the problem flared up again. This time we managed to get it to the dealer in time while risking our lives to get it there. However, this time the issue was discovered and the car wasn't released to us when they recognized that the issue could indeed contribute to cause a catastropic failure shutting down all engine operation while driving! I was shocked since I am a mechanical engineer who understands catastrophic failure in machines. They took two weeks to diagnose issue and replace computer chip. Is this a manufacture defect, design failure, or life endangering malfunction?.

14 Equipment problem of the 2005 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 10/23/2014

This car has an automatic transmission. When in reverse it struggles to move and Honda says the transmission needs to be replaced but it only has 55,900 miles on it. Honda states that only they can work on the cvt transmission and of course can control parts and labor cost and they will not sell parts to outside mechanics. It seems like a scheme to make money off of customers off of a unreliable part. Checking the internet there seems to be a lot of complaints. A normal automatic transmission replacement charge parts and labor is around $1800 but Honda wants $4200 to $4900.

15 Equipment problem of the 2006 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 06/24/2014

Due to poor performance after a recent Honda ima hybrid battery software update, the electronic battery had turned itself off in order to extend its life. When the battery turned off, the primary electronic brakes were also turned off. When an accident happened on the opposing direction of traffic, it sent debris across the freeway barrier into my lane. I attempted to decrease my speed in order to maneuver around the debris, but I did not have sufficient braking power. If the brakes were not disabled in order to extend the battery life and decrease Honda of America's financial responsibility to replace batteries under warranty, I would not have ran over the debris that almost sent me straight into the median wall. I had seen the accident with plenty of time to slow down and I would have made it safely around the debris if I had proper working brakes. The brakes remain intermittent sometimes working as they should, other times not at all as stated above.

16 Equipment problem of the 2005 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 06/23/2014

Since about 42,500 miles, this car has done something being called juddering when accelerating from stop. Sometimes it is more severe than others, which means I cannot predict how my car will accelerate. This is a very dangerous condition that I thought was unique to my car. Upon further reading, it is clear that Honda has an issue they need to fix. There have been times where the judder is so sever that it takes me up to 6 seconds to actually start to accelerate. That is extremely dangerous!! I will try (yet again) to see if the dealership will help get this taken care of once and for all, but I doubt they care.

17 Equipment problem of the 2003 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 06/04/2014

Upon acceleration, the transmission judders violently. I have had TSB 07-049 done twice which is suppose to fix the problem, but the judder returned shortly after both TSB's were done. I have also had multiple transmission flushes preformed and it has been using Honda's new cvt fluid sense it was available. Honda extended the warranty for the judder problem, but never issued a recall for this problem. Dealer told me that I need a new start clutch which I refuse to get because I will be paying up to $1,000 for the same defective part! an investigation and recall should be issued for the transmission's start clutch. I am tired of having to go to the dealer and have these so called "band aid quick fixes" done to the start clutch. This is a well known problem among all 1st generation Honda hybrid owners and it is a serious safety issue that deserves a recall.

18 Equipment problem of the 2007 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 05/01/2014

Uneven wear on the rear driver tire and regular loss of air pressure on same tire.

19 Equipment problem of the 2005 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 02/21/2014

On numerous occasions this car has accelerated dangerously when I was applying the brakes, including at intersections. I understand that this has been reported before.

20 Equipment problem of the 2012 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 11/01/2013

When the car becomes low on gas you receive a low gas notification via the indicator (icon on the left side of the dash) and a notification via the information screen, which you can acknowledge and while the indicator stays on (normal) you can clear the information screen (and audible beeps) and have the information screen go back to showing the odometer or some other information. This was the status on my 2012 hybrid until ~90 days ago. When the vehicle now receives a low gas warning (verbal beep and low gas screen on the information screen) I acknowledge the error and clear the information screen so it goes back to showing odometer, etc. But while continuing to drive the system will activate the low gas warning (beep and screen) continuously (I. E. , 25 or more times in 10 mile period) similar to a seat belt warning. This have never happened in 2 years of previous ownership. Honda service people believe this is normal and that every Honda has this "feature" but they will not show me in any other car. Nobody would buy a car with this knowledge.

21 Equipment problem of the 2006 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 09/06/2013

Mpg decreased 6-8 mpg in the past week. Driving up steep hill today, car lost power and started to roll backward a few feet before brake finally kicked in. Pressed accelerator for about 40 seconds but car would not move up the hill. Battery had drained from full charge to one bar within 3 miles.

22 Equipment problem of the 2004 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 12/03/2012

Car was working fine 5 recall perform second time transmission fail after recall perform , ima fails, miss oil, three time visit , 2 time towed, vehical in shop for 22 days, problem continue, repair bill $4322 warrenty bill 3896. 00 25% warranty cover , dealer wanted to buy car at $2500 before repair we paid 34000 for purchase call 9734329040, problem reported to Honda no resolution provided.

23 Equipment problem of the 2008 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 11/02/2012

I don't actually know when this started. It has been going on for quite some time. Sometimes when I start from a stopped position to enter traffic, even though I have the accelerator floor-boarded, the car barely responds. When I look, the hybrid charge is very low, but I may have just had the car out a short while before and the hybrid battery was fully charged. It seems as if I not only have no acceleration assist from the hybrid battery, but there is almost no power assist at all. I have not had an accident yet but fear it may happen, as I frequently have to pull out onto a very busy two lane road.

24 Equipment problem of the 2005 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 08/01/2012

I have had my hch 2005 at the dealership several times since I bought it in 2011. It has had the recall updates as they were received. My mil (check engine light) is on constant. I have replaced all 3 oxygen sensors and the catalyic convertor even after having the recall done for the secondary and third oxygen sensors. The light will not go off. When taken to the dealer they said it was the oxygen sensors and wanted $1,100 to replace them. But they are new so I know thats not the problem. Now I have learned there was some kind of recall that they failed to inform me of that was supposed to update the ecm and keep the problem I have been trying to fix from happening. Also had the juddering issue and 5 months after the dealer fixed the problem it started agian. They said that it had to be something else and the recall would not cover a second repair. So now I have a car that has a judder at takeoff and cannot be inspected because the check engine light is on. I cannot take it to have the newest recall fixed with the airbags. I have put over $500 in it to get the light off so it could pass the emissions test but still not off. And I think that Honda should have recalled all of these cars and junked them. I am a very upset onsumer and feel that something should be done about all these issues. I will be submitting my repair costs labor and parts for reinbursment becausee I feel like Honda should have done a better job.

25 Equipment problem of the 2006 Honda Civic Hybrid

26 Equipment problem of the 2003 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 01/10/2012

Strong judder or shudder, along with noise, from transmission at intersection. Cvt transmission. Recently, has become worse. Change of transmission fluid took away the noise. . . Temporarily. 3000 miles later, it has returned, and is worse. Burnishing does not help it. In Honda Civic Hybrid (hch) forums, there are hundreds of entries on this problem. Many Honda dealers are extending warranty, replacing fluid for free, or checking erg for free. A Honda dealer in another state says there was an extended warranty issue from Honda that deals specifically with this issue. Another owner posts that shudder or judder up to 15 mph requires Honda to drain and burnish the 2003-2005 Honda hybrid cvt clutch. Honda will check the egr valve during this service too. Honda tech article# ats06070. Still others have received an extended warranty on this issue in the mail. My dealer refuses to do anything free of cost. I believe that this is untrue. Please assist. Burnishing does not work, changing fluid does not work. My dealer(s) in the area are: pacific Honda, 4761 convoy st, san diego, CA 92111, (858) 694-1000, mission Honda and dch 5812 mission gorge rd, san diego, CA 92120, (619) 521-6000.

27 Equipment problem of the 2008 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 11/20/2011

On or around 11/20/2011, the control panel on my 2008 Honda Civic Hybrid lost all power while driving on ih-10 w in houston, TX. As a result, I had no information about my speed, fuel level, rpm, etc. I believe this problem was related to my hybrid battery as it had to be replaced shortly thereafter. Currently, I am having trouble with the replacement hybrid battery and Honda is refusing to remedy the problem under the warranty. I am writing to the NHTSA implore it to take a closer look at issues with Honda's hybrid batteries. It is well known that these batteries are failing at a high rate and there are several class action lawsuits concerning the performance of these batteries. This problem is well known to Honda and something needs to be done as it is putting peoples' lives at risk.

28 Equipment problem of the 2010 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 11/01/2011

Purchased vehicle in 2010. In 2011 ima/engine light came on. I am not sure of the mileage at that time. Took to Honda dealership and they checked and replaced hybrid battery. Then the end of December 2014 the ima/engine light came on again. Had codes run and did recommended steps and lights went off. A couple of days later the lights came back on. After holidays (dealership was closed when lights came back on) took to dealership and they said to bring back the following week while they did research regarding an extension to the warranty due to the issues since the vehicle has exceed the original 100k mile warranty (approx. 102. 8k miles at this time). Took back to dealership today (Monday 1/5/15) and they checked the vehicle out at this time and confirmed the ima batteries need replaced and there is no warranty or extended warranty on them. They checked for warranty on replaced batteries as well and the 3 year expired November 2014. Tried calling Honda directly and they said my vehicle was not listed on the warranty extension from 100k miles to 137k miles through the technical service bulletin that I read about elsewhere. When I asked about this TSB the lady at Honda got a little rude with me and said those are not for the public to see that they are only sent to dealerships service department so they would know how to handle these issues and asked me what I wanted Honda to help me with. If this is an ongoing issue I want Honda to replace their flawed product. I shouldn't have to replace something that is not lasting as long as they say it is supposed to. It doesn't even last half as long as they say it should.

Failure Date: 07/24/2009

This car was totaled in 2009! but I keep getting recall notices. I check the "destroyed" box, but the recall notices keep coming. How can I convince your database that this car no longer exists?.

31 Equipment problem of the 2007 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 06/01/2008

Ima battery deterioration and/or ima battery draining resulting in little power/pickup.

32 Equipment problem of the 2005 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 11/01/2007

My 2005 Honda Civic Hybrid has experienced the judder/shudder problem for years, and still Honda dealerships say there is no fix. There are a few complaints on this website, but there are thousands on the internet. This is a real issue that Honda has avoided. I had full confidence in Honda's safety until owning this vehicle. I am waiting for the day my car doesn't accelerate from a stop, and it causes an accident with major injury. Honda will have a bigger problem on its hands if that happens.
