1 Service Brakes problem of the 2006 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 02/01/2021

The contact owns a 2006 Honda Civic Hybrid. The contact stated that the vehicle stalled while driving at various speeds. The contact detached and re-attached the battery and the vehicle operated as intended. The contact stated that a fault code would show regarding an issue with the braking system. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer who confirmed that the VIN was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 11v106000 (electrical system). The mechanic was unable to confirm the exact cause of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The approximate failure mileage was 195,000.

2 Service Brakes problem of the 2012 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 02/22/2018

It shows a problem on booster control module first, and then abs control module problem was followed in a month after fixing first one. I am second owner and bought it 2 years ago. There has not been problem at north carolina, but after moving here peoria IL where is colder in winter here 2 years ago, "checking brake system followed by checking abs, power steering, ima etc" about 5 checking signs showed on the panel. The mechanic said it was booster control module problem. After he replacing it, there was no problem for a week. And then when I drive slippery ground surface in a rain, and slipped a little, the same symptom with continuous working moter on abs assembly showed off. Even when the key out, the moter was still working so that there is no electrical power left due to discharging in the morning. The mechanic said that it is abs control module problem so that he is fixing it now.

3 Service Brakes problem of the 2013 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 11/10/2017

On the morning of November 10, 2017, the "check breaks" light lit up while I was driving, then the breaks suddenly stopped working. Fortunately I was driving in slow city traffic, so I wasn't moving very fast, but in order to stop, I had to apply the parking break because the car kept on moving after I hit the breaks several times. Fortunately I was able to stop the car without hitting anyone or anything. I was afraid to drive the car after that incident, so I called a tow truck and had it towed to the fairfax Honda dealer in fairfax, va. The dealer checked it out and said that the reason the breaks failed was due to a failure in the electrical system and that a part # 01469-tr2-355 servo set needs to be replaced. The part is going to cost around $3400 and is not covered by the warranty. If that wasn't bad enough, the part is also on International backlog and it will soon be a month and I still don't have a car. But now I am thinking that it sounds strange for the breaks to depend on the electric system of the car and that it could be a design flaw and is a safety concern for me. One of the scariest experiences is to have your breaks fail while driving and I don't want that to happen to me again. I bought the car as a certified pre-owned car at another Honda dealer (pohanka in fredericksburg, va) in August of 2016, but now I am afraid that could happen again even after shelling out that amount of cash to have it fixed.

5 Service Brakes problem of the 2003 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 03/01/2017

Vehicle brakes won't work when braking on a bumpy road or highway. Vehicle wont stop on top on a bump that is on the road. When in motion, when trying to make a sudden stop on a bump that it is on the road, vehicle brakes will slide and not stop. Either on city or highway roads. I am concerned that when I am speeding and I have to make a sudden stop to avoid hitting another car in front of me I will end up crashing into them if there is a bump ahead of me, my brakes wont work and brakes will slide and not work. It has happen many times since I purchased the vehicce in 2003 but my complaints have been ignored by the Honda dealership.

6 Service Brakes problem of the 2006 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 04/19/2015

Driver was coming down a hill and around a curve and pressed the brakes to slow down and there was absolutely no response from the brakes. The driver was forced to pull the hand brake on the car - causing the car to swerve into the oncoming lane. The car was then hit by an oncoming car. The car was completely totaled and the driver suffered multiple injuries.

8 Service Brakes problem of the 2006 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 06/24/2014

Due to poor performance after a recent Honda ima hybrid battery software update, the electronic battery had turned itself off in order to extend its life. When the battery turned off, the primary electronic brakes were also turned off. When an accident happened on the opposing direction of traffic, it sent debris across the freeway barrier into my lane. I attempted to decrease my speed in order to maneuver around the debris, but I did not have sufficient braking power. If the brakes were not disabled in order to extend the battery life and decrease Honda of America's financial responsibility to replace batteries under warranty, I would not have ran over the debris that almost sent me straight into the median wall. I had seen the accident with plenty of time to slow down and I would have made it safely around the debris if I had proper working brakes. The brakes remain intermittent sometimes working as they should, other times not at all as stated above.

9 Service Brakes problem of the 2005 Honda Civic Hybrid

10 Service Brakes problem of the 2012 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 11/16/2012

We where rear ended on the 805 south at e st in san diego CA. The traffic came to a complete stop and a older Ford expedition plowed into us at 55 mph , upon impact the Honda accelerated full throttle with complete loss of brakes , my wife was driving I was front passenger and my handicapped son was r/r , she was able to steer the car to the right shoulder as I slammed the car into park and turned the ignition off at about 40 mph , it took about 100 yards before it came to a stop, the car is at tipton Honda in el cajon and they say that there is no evidence or computer fault code of said problem , how do I put my family back into the car and feel completely safe knowing it might happen again.

11 Service Brakes problem of the 2008 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 03/01/2011

First incident occurred around a month after purchased 3 of 2011. Door locks would lock & unlock while driving. Immediately took it back to norm reeves Honda in cerritos,CA. I was told that the problem was a bad motor in the passenger door & norm reeves fixed the problem. I was told the drivers side window was defected & norm reeves replaced the window. In 4 of 2011, the car door locks began locking & unlocking while driving but now making a screeching sound. Took the car back to the same norm reeves & they explained it was the motor in the passenger rear door. That was fixed as well. In 6 of 2011, again the door locks started locking & unlocking while driving. I then realized the rear drivers side door was not locking & took it in to norm reeve where they stated the motor was out & they fixed it. I then asked if maybe it could be something electrical & if they could check the electrical wiring on the car, I was told by octavio, service manager at norm reeves, it was not the electrical that it was the door locks. I told the service manager, octavio at this time I felt like the car also gives a push or skip while driving & also smelled a burning smell. Octavio stated the Honda was checked by a tech & said nothing was wrong with it. I began taking the Honda civic in to norm reeves every month complaining about the car skipping or losing traction. It was frightening driving down hills thinking my car would not stop or lose control. The burning smell would become greater when driving up an incline or the hills of any freeway or city. When the car would be parked at an incline the shifter would lock & become hard to remove from park. During each visit to norma reeves Honda, which occurred more than 10 times, I was never told of any recalls or examinations needed in regards to the fuel tank problems & only found out when my Honda civic was taken to rock Honda of fontana, CA.

12 Service Brakes problem of the 2009 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 07/26/2010

While braking, the car starts to regenerate (charge the hybrid battery) and then a short burst of assist (electrical drive from the hybrid battery) while my foot is on the brake. This happens about twice a week and is extremely dangerous since I sometimes get into stop-and-go traffic. This means that I could be braking and the car will accelerate, possibly hitting the car in front of mine.

13 Service Brakes problem of the 2009 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 03/17/2010

The contact owns a 2009 Honda Civic Hybrid. The contact was driving approximately 30 mph. The brake pedal was applied and traveled to the floorboard with no power response. The vehicle crashed into the rear of another vehicle. The contact suffered slight back pain. A police report was filed for the incident. An authorized dealer a was notified of the malfunction. The contact was waiting on a response from the dealer. The current and failure mileages were 10,000.

14 Service Brakes problem of the 2003 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 03/15/2010

This problem has been happening since the car was brand new, and continues to this day. While slowing down, and if the car goes over a bump or rough patch in the road, the electrical braking by the hybrid system turns off. This causes there to be no braking at all on the car for a brief period of time. The regular braking system will engage but it requires more force and time than normal to slow and stop the car. The stopping distance is definitely increased and could lead to an accident. It occurs often, and can be recreated over the same rough patch in the road. The amount of roughness required to cause this is low and there is no way to predict by looking at the road. It is actually quite shocking how little it takes and how different the braking is after it happens. I complained to the dealer but they said there was nothing they could do, that is just the way it is.

15 Service Brakes problem of the 2008 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 02/28/2010

Currently I have 32,277 miles and don't drive it, it's not safe to drive. I take a bus :) 1# trans locked at 60mph on hwy and caused almost a fatal crash! at 23,000 miles. Car was able to drive up to 15mpg having appx. 6000rpms. Car left at dealership and only pcm software was upd. No lockups are occurring, but trans is weaving, harsh start/stop often!/unexpected shutdown. Dealership found service bulletin #08-014 (harsh engagement), upd. The on board computer and symptoms are much worse than previously. Lower mpg ( 25-28 ), much worse performance, unexpected battery discharge, weaving, low accel. Dealer duplicated problems, but said "it's ok" and problems is untouched. Since they updated the system, the hybrid option is not kicking in as before. Prev. I was able to drive slowly only on hybrid, now I can't. No actions are taken to resolve the issue. Once they changed the ima batt pack, but this did not help and I see not a difference. Complained again, and absolutely no response. Brakes are malfunctioning. Brake fluid is missing, dealer said "[xxx], it's a mystery". Depending on outside temp, battery charge level and car temp breaks work diff! occasionally while slowing down, the battery level reaches full and you must press the pedal as hard as you can to stop. This has caused small crashes and once brakes did not work, or I pressed too lightly ( cold outside with full battery ) and unfortunately I couldn't stop on time and ran over a pedestrian. She is badly injured and suing my insurance company! dealer rec. To "change car, better to buy not a Honda and don't bother them if nothing is broken. " police report ready to present. These are only the major issues I'm having. I would need much more space to write 20 pgs essay. Minor issues: - super fast tire wear ( after 20,000 ) and now again at 32,000 - not working climate ctrl system - check engine, ima light, brake system and airbag lights on. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

16 Service Brakes problem of the 2007 Honda Civic Hybrid

17 Service Brakes problem of the 2005 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 02/04/2010

2005 Honda Civic Hybrid: about once a day during my commute, I hit a bump or pothole while braking, and the brakes get very weak for a second until I apply more pedal pressure. This is a problem probably very similar to the recent Toyota prius braking problem. The generator stops providing braking force when the vehicle hits a pothole.

18 Service Brakes problem of the 2008 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 02/04/2010

08 Honda Civic Hybrid - when the batteries are fully charged, the generator is not used for braking. When the batteries are not charged, the generator is used for braking. During the transition, I have been surprised many times by the lack of brakes. When the batteries are not charging you have to really press hard on the brakes to even slow down. Then, if you are expecting to press hard and the generator has kicked back in, you are thrown forward as the brakes work fine. I thought this and the occasional herky-jerkiness that goes along with it is normal. But, after reading about the Toyota prius brake issue, the Honda is just as bad, if not worse. This has been going on since day one of ownership.

19 Service Brakes problem of the 2008 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 01/19/2010

20 Service Brakes problem of the 2004 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 01/01/2010

Same braking issue reported with the prius. When braking, if you go over a pothole, railroad tracks, etc. , it feels like the brakes aren't stopping the vehicle. It happens every time you stop while going over an imperfection in the roadway. There are no consequences if you quickly take your foot off the brake and reapply. This has happened since I purchased the vehicle and I thought it was a standard side effect of driving a hybrid. Also, in rain or slick conditions, the electric motor kicks in provides additional power at the wrong time. Again, careful driving keeps this from being a serious issue. If you quickly take your foot off the accelerator and then reapply, the issue resolves itself. This has also been happening since I purchased the vehicle new.

21 Service Brakes problem of the 2003 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 12/26/2009

The contact owns a 2003 Honda Civic Hybrid. While driving 75 mph on the interstate when the accelerator pedal extended to the floor without the contact applying pressure to it, then the rpms increased. He then firmly pressed on the brake pedal and the vehicle started to slow down. The contact was able to continue driving. The failure has occurred approximately 7 to 8 times. Honda was contacted and stated that they were not going to repair the vehicle since the failure was related to the cruise control. They also advised the contact to have the vehicle diagnosed by the dealer. No repairs were made to the vehicle. The failure mileage was 130,000. The current mileage was 207,496. The consumer also stated the brakes did not work well on a rough road when going down a hill. Updated 05/13/10.

22 Service Brakes problem of the 2005 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 12/14/2009

When traveling over a bump or bumppy road the brake pedal of my Honda Civic Hybrid becomes soft and ineffective until after I have passed over the bumps.

23 Service Brakes problem of the 2005 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 12/08/2009

1) since I bought the car in 2005 (new), periodically the anti-lock brake system kicks in for no apparent reason (while I am braking, of course). 2) under the above situation, as well as at other times when the antilock brakes kick in, I cannot get the abs to disengage no matter what I do, until the car has reached a complete stop. 3) intermittently, the antilock brake system, when it kicks in, the car will take an exceedingly long, very very exceedingly long time to stop. Very exceeding long. At almost all these times, I was already going very slowly toward a stop sign, stoplight or approaching an intersection to turn. It seems that the wheels lock up and the car just slides. As a result of #3, I have run innumerable stop signs, a few stop lights, the other night I almost hit a car head on, missed the turnoff to my street by almost 200 feet, missed my driveway by about 100 feet. This was on snowy, wet slushy roads. But, I will tell you when approaching the intersections and turns, I could not have been going slower without being at almost a dead standstill. It is very fortunate that in each case there was no accident. But, the dealership tells me that is the way the abs system works, there is nothing wrong with it and nevertheless they cannot reproduce the problem. Has anyone else reported this problem? I have contacted Honda corporation, checked for bulletins, etc. And I find nothing. I do not believe antilock brakes are supposed to work like this.

24 Service Brakes problem of the 2008 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 12/04/2009

While applying brakes the car suddenly accelerates. It has happened several times mostly at lower speed. So far I have not experience it on interstate.

25 Service Brakes problem of the 2008 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 09/01/2009

While applying the brakes the car suddenly accelerates forward unexpectedly and does not stop. It has happened several times mostly lower speeds when approaching a stop sign/light and almost caused multiple rear end collisions.

26 Service Brakes problem of the 2007 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 08/05/2009

Car model: Honda Civic Hybrid 2007 the car has a slipping brake. When pulling up to a stop light or sign the brake can and frequently does suddenly let go. When less than full force is applied to the brake pedal the brake engages normally. However, when the car nears a full stop the brake suddenly lets go. This can be compensated for by applying additional brake force, but the sudden loss of braking can be startling and disorienting. The defect happens almost consistently under the conditions described above, namely less than full braking force. I personally became accustomed to the quirk. However, my wife has claimed that the defect nearly caused her to rear end another car and has since refused to drive the vehicle.

27 Service Brakes problem of the 2008 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 04/23/2009

When coming to a low speed stop the engine shuts off at about 6 mph and the braking system goes manual reducing braking effect by over 60%. This has resulted in a minor accident requiring the replacement of the front bumper.

28 Service Brakes problem of the 2005 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 03/05/2008

2005 Honda Civic Hybrid, when braking tires squeal like they are skidding. This has happened 3 or 4 times, usually after driving for more than a few hours. I try to apply the brakes on a regular stopping event, just even gently application to the pedal, and the front wheels make an audible skidding sound.

29 Service Brakes problem of the 2003 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 02/13/2007

I've encountered a problem with Honda hybrid braking systems on two models (the 2000 insight and the 2003 hch - both manual transmissions). Recently, ambivalence cost me dearly. Driving on the interstate, a truck cut me off. I hit the brakes but found myself accelerating towards the truck instead of stopping. At the last minute, I swerved to avoid the truck and ended up skidding, rolling, and finally crashing to a stop. On a positive note, I walked away from the accident with some minor scratches and no one else was hurt. My car has sustained serious damage and I am waiting to receive final word on its status from my insurance company.

30 Service Brakes problem of the 2007 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 01/01/2007

My 2007 Honda civic suffers from the same braking problem they are saying is an issue with the prius with foot on the brake as in slowing for stop sign or slower vehicle , if you hit a bump the car speeds us just as if you took your foot of the brake.

31 Service Brakes problem of the 2006 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 04/02/2006

Xi have owned a 2006 Civic Hybrid for the past year and a half. On several occasions I have noticed that a light application of the brake pedal can result in a sudden acceleration} rather than in braking. This happens intermittently, I would say approximately once a month. It seems like a malfunction in the computer system running the braking system. On one occasion last April this resulted in a minor accident. At the time I had only owned the car for a short interval and was surprised at this strange reaction of the car. Since that time this problem has recurred several times. I would like to ask if you have had other reports of this problem and whether you know about it. Since it is an intermittent effect it is no use taking the car to the dealership.

32 Service Brakes problem of the 2005 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 09/01/2005

Momentary loss of braking capability while traveling over an uneven road surface, pot hole or bump.

33 Service Brakes problem of the 2003 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 08/15/2005

I wish to make notice to NHTSA that the issue in braking for prius vehicles would seem to me to be related, in general, to hybrids, built in japan, and not just Toyota. I have an '03 Honda Civic Hybrid, and it has issues. It has been in an accident back in '05 and what was the issue? braking! the car went out of control under heavy braking (though all these vehicles have 4 whl abs) in an "animal-avoidance" attempt. I ended up careening side-wise sliding until colliding with a utility pole, at the passgr side "a" pillar. Raccoon didn't survive. I had noticed on several occasions that the abs, upon encountering bumps or jolts of any significant degree, will "cut-out" momentarily, and further, the "engine-braking' associated with the hybrid motor-generator also cuts out and does not return (until after the stop has been concluded using only the available braking methods left)(no abs "chatter" is to be observed in these scenarios). The phenomenon is definitely reproducible; I have often found that such bumps are virtually unavoidable on certain places I commonly drive near my home. It is such an issue that I have learned to try to compensate for that when driving over these bumpy places, but one can't compensate when encountering same in a new, unfamiliar area/situation. Please do look into the concept that it could be more of a japanese made abs system-fault , (possibly including engine-regenerative braking system) rather than a Toyota-only thing. I would request that my note be acknowledged, myself be contacted so as to provide any further info needed, and my contact info be retained so as to be contacted regarding subsequent resolutions, ie recalls/legal cases/settlements. By the way, I had not "collision" insurance, thus I paid to repair my hch post that accident. I still drive the car today, though anyone would have called it "totalled". Tires- were the same set installed as oem, were at least 60% even at 51k, they readily woreout afterwards-post-acc alignmt issues.

34 Service Brakes problem of the 2005 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 06/08/2005
