1 Tire problem of the 2006 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 07/05/2011

12 tires in 3 years?? yes we have put 80,000 miles on the car, but this is extreme! the last flat occured on the highway, at 70 miles per hour, (thank god, there wasn't a major accident!)and when we went to repair or replace it we were informed that another tire, was extremely bald with no tread except on the outside, which made it difficult for anyone to notice. (I had bought a tire 2 weeks previous!! I never saw a tire this bald and rippled with bare spots all around. . . These tires were bought last oct. And are 60,000 mile tires. We then went to the dealorship because of this and a loud noise and were told the bearing from the transmission to the axle needs to be replaced. . . . $600. . . . But will I still need more new tires soon??? the expence of maintaining this car (thousands of dollars for tires!!!, and has drained our savings,we still have 2 more years of payments and want a solution from Honda and believe if there is a rear axle problem, causing loud noise and quickly worn tires, they should correct it and reimburse us!! you buy an expensive hybrid to save on gas and less pollution and get robbed on maintenance, safety and comfort.

2 Tire problem of the 2008 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 06/27/2011

My '08 Honda Civic Hybrid wears tires abnormally, leading to unsafe driving conditions, especially on wet or frosty surfaces. I have contacted Honda yearly about this problem, having had to replace tires at intervals of approximately 15,000 miles. At this low mileage, my tires were bald in spots. Although Honda has subsidized the cost of new tires, at 50%, they have not fixed the defect which continues to cause this abnormal tire wear.

3 Tire problem of the 2003 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 05/18/2011

I installed 4 goodyear integrity tires on my 2003 Honda Civic Hybrid. On 5/17/2011 I drove it on rain grooved concrete (us 287) and when it hit the grooved pavement, it went into a violent shimmy. There was a cross wind but the tires performed normally on smooth concrete, asphalt, and in the same cross wind on e-w and n-s highways. When I came to the rain grooves I was driving between 60-65 mph and I had to slow to less than 45 mph to have any secure control of the car. It felt like the steering column had come loose or the wheels were going wildly. The car lurched 1-2 inches laterally while on the rain grooved concrete. I had to check a box for which tire position but it was at all tire positions that the car was shimmying. This tire is definitely not a safe tire on rain-grooved concrete highways.

4 Tire problem of the 2008 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 10/10/2010

2008 Honda Civic Hybrid experiencing severe tire cupping for 3rd time. Vehicle is having it's 3rd set of tires put on at 51,000 miles. Fuel economy is dramatically lower as well. Honda has agreed (2nd time now) to pay 50% of another new set of tires. Vehicle has been aligned and tires have been rotated as advised. I know two other persons in my city with the tire cupping issue. This problem is also rampant on the internet. Honda has no solution to fix the cause of the severe tire cupping problems. Owners are being forced to get half life out of their tire purchases.

5 Tire problem of the 2007 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 09/06/2010

Honda civic - 2007 hybrid - needs new "control arms" as the tires are unsafe to drive - apparently this is happening a lot, I'm surprised there is not a recall yet. I've got 70k miles and finishing my 2nd set of rear tires already - they refuse to correct at no cost, even though they've even put out a "service bulletin".

6 Tire problem of the 2007 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 09/06/2010

Honda Civic Hybrid has tire wear on inner part of back tires. At 21,000 miles dealer says the back tires need to be replaced, they say it may be a balance problem. I researched the problem and safety bulletin indicates the rear control arm is defective, but car hasn't been recalled. The control arm needs replacement, but they will only give a % of replacement for back tires. It sounds like if the problem is not fixed there will continue to be unsual tire wear, which poses a safety risk to drivers. Am contacting dealer tomorrow about problem.

7 Tire problem of the 2007 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 06/25/2010

2007 Honda Civic Hybrid very rapid inside edge tire wear. At 21k we need 3rd set of tires for loud excessive noise at 25-65 mph and even slow turning . Have had our Honda dealer install the new "c" marked control arms and alignment done also at 13k. Honda rep looked at car today with 21k said all is ok and is to Honda specs. This is not my idea of a car that is made correctly or in anyone's spec's anywhere in the real automotive world ! really 3 sets of tires in 21k miles "normal" that takes alot of ignorance on Honda's part. A stressful waiting game for the tire's to blow out, heaven knows you will not hear tires go with all the noise from them. Just hope were able to control car and no one gets hurt.

8 Tire problem of the 2008 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 10/18/2009

1. Had car tires rotated every 7500 miles at oil change time. At 23300 after rear tires were put on front in rotation, tires would bounce and were noisy and there was vibration. Tires were cupped and ruined. Dealer said need new tires and alignment. Got new tires, at costco, and alignment at dealer. Dealer gives paper work and still out of spec. Original tires. Issue on 2006 thru some 2008 Honda Civic Hybrids was rear control arms issues. Still an issue, premature wear and cupping causing potential for accident. Honda dealer says nothing wrong, but this is an issue. Others on internet also show same problem with premature tire wear.

9 Tire problem of the 2008 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 08/16/2009

Severe tire cupping, early tire failure. Dealer unable to fix cause of problem, they state that it results from a design flaw (non-adjustable cambers/arms). Tires failed at 20,000 miles and are failing again at 44,000 miles. I had to fight with Honda to get them to go 50/50 on the first set of replaced (dunlop) tires. They argues that I had enjoyed using them for 1/2 their life, so 50% was their maximum dollar match. I was also told to "rotate" my tires more frequently, even though I had service records showing that I do rotate on a routine basis at the dealership. From what I am researching online, Honda has a big problem going on with tire cupping on the Civic Hybrids. My hope is that this is researched by the NHTSA more thoroughly. I am seeing numerous complaints on your website about this issue. . . . . Some are filed under "tires" while others filed under "rear suspension". I'm guessing the choose to file under "rear suspension" because dealers like mine are stating that this is a camber issue. On a side note, and this is odd to me, the dealership could not bring my alignment into manufacture recommended "spec" either. The numbers are significantly "off" where Honda says they should be. Ironic???.

10 Tire problem of the 2007 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 04/30/2009

Tires wear out , due to weak stabilizer bars on rear end, Honda replaced the stabilizer's, and aligned car, however don't pay to replace tires, only way to know you have a problem is to take car to dealer, if you get you service anywhere else, you don't know you have a problem. I took car in for oil change and got the word about the service bulletin.

11 Tire problem of the 2006 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 02/28/2009

I have a 2006 Honda Civic Hybrid, which is exhibiting excessive and uneven rear tire wear. The tires were initially replaced in Feb. 2008, and again in June 2008 (along with the rear control arms). Now, in February 2009, the rear tires are worn out again on the inside, with cupping and scalloping of the tread. These tires have less than 20,000 miles since new, and have been rotated. This appears to be a common problem with the civic, and this problem is not being addressed or fixed by Honda.

12 Tire problem of the 2008 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 08/18/2008

I purchased a new car Honda Civic Hybrid 2008 and at 6000 miles had to have all four tires replaced due to cupping. Honda realigned all four and paid for tires. After another 6000 miles, I had all four tires worn down again. This time I did not hear from Honda after filing a complaint. I took to another Honda repair shop & they suggested rebalance & rotate.

13 Tire problem of the 2006 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 06/09/2008

I recently bought new tires and the steel tried is showing through. Honda dealership said that Honda was aware of the problem and, if I bought new tires, that they would give me a free alignment. Not cool seeing as Honda should give me new tires and fix the problem. My car now makes loud noises due to the tires and, with all the other fixes I am having to get, I am rethinking Honda's commitment to customer satisfaction. I am thinking of trading it in for a prius.

14 Tire problem of the 2007 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 04/15/2008

I have a 2007 Honda Civic Hybrid with tire problems. I have taken my car to the dealer twice with complaints about uneven tire wear and poor handling and have been assured that I am imagining everything. The tires that have been on the rear the longest have signs of separation and very different wear than those that have been on the front the longest. There is a definite problem with handling when the worn tires are on the front but my Honda service manager says nothing is wrong with the tires. I even wrote Honda hq and received a response that they know of no problem with the cheap bridgestone tires being put on these cars. I have read online in forum and blogs there are 100's of Civic Hybrid owners like me that are facing the same issue.

15 Tire problem of the 2006 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 09/11/2007

I was driving on route 88 heading west. I shifted lanes gradually from the left lane to the right lane when I hit a puddle. I was easing off the accelerator, but I did not have my foot on the brake. My Honda Civic Hybrid 2006 started to hydroplane. It spun around 320 degrees and went over an embankment. The car suffered over $14,000 damage and my wife suffered a severe back injury that continues to impact her ability to function today. The accident was reported to the state police. A witness that was driving behind me confirmed that my brake lights never lit up. I am concerned that the Honda Civic Hybrid is more likely to hydroplane than other cars. I would like someone to investigate the possibility that there is a defect that creates this significant risk. I should also note that I have observed unusually rapid wearing of the tires on the hybrid. The dealer confirmed that this is a known issue, but did not offer a remedy. The front tires were replaced at 13,000 miles and the car had approximately 20,000 miles at the time of the accident.

16 Tire problem of the 2006 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 05/07/2007

The contact owns a 2006 Honda Civic Hybrid. While driving 60 mph, the contact heard road noise. The dealer stated that the rear tires were unevenly worn, but was unable to determine the cause of failure. The dealer advised the contact to not rotate the tires. The current mileage is 22,652 and failure mileage was 22,300. The consumer stated he has reason to believe the problem is the battery pack(between rear seat and trunk) is causing the rear tires to wear unevenly. Updated 07/10/07.

17 Tire problem of the 2006 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 11/01/2006

1. I own a 2006 Honda Civic Hybrid which has had its tires replaced at least 3 times due to uneven wear. 2. The first event occurred when the tire itself just exploded because the inner walls of the tire were so thin and worn only after 10k miles?? this continued at 15k and again at 20k and now again. The dealership replaced it once but now is refusing to do anything about it. 3. The first time it occurred a local Honda dealer auto repair dept. Replaced the tires, but they refused to there after forcing me to pay for it time and time again. They won't file a compliant to Honda either even though the service agents acknowledge its a strange wearing that clearly is from the car itself.

18 Tire problem of the 2003 Honda Civic Hybrid

Failure Date: 08/15/2005

I wish to make notice to NHTSA that the issue in braking for prius vehicles would seem to me to be related, in general, to hybrids, built in japan, and not just Toyota. I have an '03 Honda Civic Hybrid, and it has issues. It has been in an accident back in '05 and what was the issue? braking! the car went out of control under heavy braking (though all these vehicles have 4 whl abs) in an "animal-avoidance" attempt. I ended up careening side-wise sliding until colliding with a utility pole, at the passgr side "a" pillar. Raccoon didn't survive. I had noticed on several occasions that the abs, upon encountering bumps or jolts of any significant degree, will "cut-out" momentarily, and further, the "engine-braking' associated with the hybrid motor-generator also cuts out and does not return (until after the stop has been concluded using only the available braking methods left)(no abs "chatter" is to be observed in these scenarios). The phenomenon is definitely reproducible; I have often found that such bumps are virtually unavoidable on certain places I commonly drive near my home. It is such an issue that I have learned to try to compensate for that when driving over these bumpy places, but one can't compensate when encountering same in a new, unfamiliar area/situation. Please do look into the concept that it could be more of a japanese made abs system-fault , (possibly including engine-regenerative braking system) rather than a Toyota-only thing. I would request that my note be acknowledged, myself be contacted so as to provide any further info needed, and my contact info be retained so as to be contacted regarding subsequent resolutions, ie recalls/legal cases/settlements. By the way, I had not "collision" insurance, thus I paid to repair my hch post that accident. I still drive the car today, though anyone would have called it "totalled". Tires- were the same set installed as oem, were at least 60% even at 51k, they readily woreout afterwards-post-acc alignmt issues.
