1 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 10/15/2025

Subject: engine stalls upon acceleration from stop - near collision ?description: I am experiencing intermittent engine stalling on my 2012 Honda Cr-v. The issue occurs specifically when attempting to accelerate from a complete stop (e. G. , at stop signs or intersections). When I press the gas pedal to proceed, the engine unexpectedly shuts off and loses all motive power. ?on several occasions, the vehicle has stalled multiple times in succession before it would stay running. In one severe incident, I was attempting a right turn onto a busy road from a stop sign. The vehicle stalled mid-turn, leaving me stranded in the path of traffic. A vehicle approaching from behind nearly rear-ended me because I could not clear the intersection. ?there are no warning lights prior to the stall. This loss of power at intersections poses an immediate safety risk of collision. I suspect this may be related to the known vtc actuator/timing chain defect affecting this model year.

2 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 12/14/2024

The 2012 Honda crv with 107,000 miles was making noise on startup and first few minutes of running. This only happened a few times. No engine light or oil light came on, but planned to bring to repair shop soon. Then the engine stalled driving on the highway. The car completely shutdown. When brought to Honda dealer, they said it completely ran out of oil and the engine, as well as many other components, were destroyed, quoting $11,0000 in repairs to put in another used (not new) engine. The oil had been replaced less than 7,000 miles prior to the incident with the recommended full synthetic (which Honda says should last 7,500 to 10,000 miles). Honda dealer said the engine had no compression, which means the piston rings were shot. This is the same exact issue that the 2008-2011 accords/crvs had, and Honda recognized it, extending the warranty to 125,000 on the engine. I requested assistance from Honda - they said no - despite the fact that I have owned 8 Hondas in my lifetime. This will be the last Honda I ever buy as even the 2018-2019 crvs now have yet another oil consumption/dilution issue, and Honda no longer stands by their customers (because they can not afford to with their diminishing quality) !!.

3 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 11/16/2024

2 weeks ago I was coming to a stop on a hill and the car stalled like it was about to shut off, but it kept running. A week ago. I was turning into a parking lot and the car stalled. The steering wheel got hard, so I turned off the car and then I turned it back on again. It stalled a little bit, but then it turned on. And finally yesterday November 16, 2024 as I was turning into a supermarket parking lot. The car stalled and shut off completely and didn’t want to restart. Two men. One was a mechanic pushed the car out of the way, and the mechanic one told me that it’s the timing chain.

4 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 08/23/2023

Faulty piston rings causing consistent low oil issues.

5 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2023

The contact owns a 2012 Honda Cr-v. The contact stated that an abnormal grinding was coming from the engine. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact also stated that after coming to a complete stop, the vehicle would hesitate while depressing the accelerator pedal. The contact's husband spoke with the dealer and was informed that there were no recalls on the VIN. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 23,000.

6 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 04/01/2023

Upon cold start, the engine makes a loud knocking or rattling noise for several seconds, most noticeable after the vehicle has been sitting overnight. The noise seems to be coming from the timing area of the engine and has been identified by multiple mechanics as likely due to a faulty vtc (variable timing control) actuator. This issue happens consistently during cold starts, then disappears once the engine warms up. There are no warning lights, diagnostic codes, or messages displayed on the dashboard when this occurs. The noise is loud enough to raise safety concerns, as it could indicate premature wear on internal components. I’m concerned that continued driving could lead to more serious engine damage. This problem has not been officially diagnosed by a dealership, but online forums and known service bulletins suggest this is a common issue with the 2012 Honda Cr-v. From what I understand, the actuator allows oil to drain when the engine is off, causing a delay in oil pressure build-up and resulting in the knocking noise. This has not yet resulted in a breakdown, but the risk of future failure is concerning. I believe this should be further investigated due to the widespread nature of the problem and the potential long-term damage it could cause.

7 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 01/31/2022

Vtc actuator causing car to make grinding sound upon startup. I have determined that this is a known issue with this make/model/year of Honda with litigation in California and illinois. Left unfixed, my mechanic said this could lead to much larger repairs down the road. This will directly affect the life of the car and can leave the driver stranded should the actuator fail completely due to the known faulty part.

8 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 09/10/2021

2012 Cr-v was purchased on 4/9/16 with 36,000 miles. During the first winter a startup problem became obvious that was covered and repaired by Honda due to a recall for the faulty variable timing actuator. Vta was replaced on 3/2/17 with 41,000 miles (5000 miles later). During the winter of 2019 symptoms started to sporadically reappear. The same part is failing. A newer upgraded part was supposed to replace the original faulty part the first time. I am now told that Honda will charge me $1000 to replace this part again. Due to covid the car was barely driven and repair was secondary to other life circumstances. It has become noticeable once again this winter. . The same part should not be failing if it were remedied the first time. Am I to understand that I will have to replace this part every two years on my own dime because Honda is replacing the same faulty part? I would like Honda to replace the faulty part with one that is not guaranteed to fail again. Thank you.

9 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 04/25/2021

On April 25, 2021 I was gently pulling into my driveway and I applied the brakes and the car accelerated. I continue to apply the brake and the car would not stop. I crashed into my front porch. The front wheels went over the edge of the porch and the car stopped. There is about a 7 foot drop off, thankfully the whole car didn't go off the porch. I knocked all the supports for the porch and the roof was on the top of my car. I do believe if I were pressing the accelerator by mistake the car would've continued off the porch. Bought the car in December 2020 only had it six months. I was certain I had stepped on the brakes so I googled and found other people with 2012s in 2011's had experienced this problem. I have no police report but the police did come out because one of the neighbors had called them. They may have an incident report. Thankfully the car stopped before went off the porch or I could have been severely hurt.

10 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 04/05/2021

I am the original and only owner. Noticed grinding noise on engine startup, have researched the problem and narrowed it down to a vtc actuator defect on this vehicle. Honda has put out a TSB in the past on this issue. This failure has caused my timing belts to go bad and mechanics have told me I am at risk of having engine failure if this probem is not addressed. The manufacturer should resolve this issue nationwide. There have been reports of class action lawsuit in California and illinois regarding this matter. Why do I as consumer have to shell out over $2000 to repair this mess which is a defect/fault of the manufacturer?.

11 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 01/10/2021

Engine makes loud grinding noise at startup. Have been told it is likely the vtc acctuator and/or an issue with the timing chain tensioner. The problem has gotten worse over time. Approximate date incident occurred is an estimate. I understand this is an issue with many of these vehicles and that there may even be a class action lawsuit filed. I am curious why this hasn't been deemed a recall item?.

12 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2019

As nearly every Honda Cr-v driver of this generation will state, the car always experienced a startling 1-2 second grind upon cold start up in a northeast USA winter. With 198,000 miles, it began to do it at every start, especially the first start-up in the morning. I knew a while back that it was a faulty vtc actuator that Honda first knew about in the 2000s, but didn’t resolve until recently. A local Honda dealer confirmed this noise is the “normal” vtc actuator noise, and shrugged it off. They also shrugged it off when it was under an extended, covered warranty and I complained about it then. As many reading this likely know, the vtc actuator malfunction has numerous implications to the tensioner and the timing chain, among other components of the engine. Honda was allowed to brush this off because this was never considered a mandatory safety recall. And clearly, there is an issue because there is a class action lawsuit currently in California and illinois - what about the other 48 states? or those who are not the original owners? (I received this car in 2017 when my uncle, the original owner, passed). The vtc actuator failure is not a mild inconvenience. It can have catastrophic consequences and Honda uses it to charge customers thousands of dollars. The entire experience of myself and many have truly made me lose faith in whatever the NHTSA is supposed to do in order to ensure the safety of drivers.

13 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2019

Reported vtc actuator problem under warranty. Honda refused to fix. They issued a TSB stating it was a non-issue. Now, the timing chain is stretched, mechanic reports that the engine is damaged beyond. Metal shavings are in the oil filter, main bearings are worn. All this because of a known design flaw that the mfg was unwilling to repair.

14 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 04/05/2019

Vtc actuator causing car to make grinding sound upon startup. The problem started 2 months after I bought the car from brandon Honda, in FL. I drove it to minnesota with no problem but as soon as I was there it was sputtering at every start up. This will be a costly repair, but due to previous litigation you would think it would be recalled. Many crvs from the same year up north have the same problem. So it's pretty common. This could ruin the engine repair should offered on the faulty part that goes bad at lower temos. Just like the other common issue ( the awd).

15 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 02/02/2018

Engine rattles at cold start up. Per service bulletin the vtc actuator is faulty and needs to be replaced with an upgraded part. This is the second time I will need to have it replaced. I shouldn't have to pay for this repair again.

16 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 01/08/2018

We had a direct deer hit on i81 north in grantville PA. The direct hit was taken on the driver's side of the vehicle at 65 mph in highway driving. The airbag only deployed on the passenger side not on the driver's side. This seemed very odd to us. Either both air bags should have deployed or neither airbag should have deployed in this accident. Pictures are attached. I reported this to american Honda, but they refused to investigate it and I had to beg them for an email address to send the pictures to. Given their attitude, I felt I needed to report this accident to NHTSA. My car was totaled by new jersey manufacturer's insurance CO.

17 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 05/25/2017

I bought a used crv from the dealer in manchester nh. It is not under warantee anymore. The vtc actuator is bad and I need it replaced. It was recalled by Honda. They are telling me its only up to 60 k miles. I bought it with that many on it.

18 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 05/06/2017

Wife pulled car into attached garage, has stopped, needed to move up 1-2 feet, with foot on brake the car suddenly overpowered the brakes, smashed a cabinet in garage, hit inside wall, broke studs, and moved others damage both wall in garage and inside home, there were marks on garage floor per insurance adjuster said, not skid marks instead it was from front wheels spinning as it pushed a cabinet into and through 2 walls - took to dealeer, Honda corporate was involved, before Honda people we involved, they could not duplicate the situaltion, (note this is the second time this happened other was parking in outside parking lot, was able to stop but barely) it was swept under the rug, by Honda, corporate, factory rep never even bothered to call us. Wife was accident free 50+ years, she is short about 5 foot, drives with right foot only. There is an engineer or someone back in 2012 already 136,000 reported accidents across all makes and models, SUV and foreign cars were the worst, 92% were at slow speed mostly parking, the one thing in common is everything is electronic, batteries are smaller and at low speeds all the power being used causes a spike to the computer, which controls speed, no cables or rods to be pushed on gas pedal anymore, to make it worse another car same model, year, make in on your site as id 10794564 look at VIN # almost identical. With all this happening it appears the manufactures are not bothering to find a common cause for this, saves them money, but the damages, injuries, and deaths related to this problem has never been found in 10+ years.

19 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2017

Please research this issue with 2012 Honda Cr-v's as I am not the only one with this issue and I believe it's a serious safety issue: the vehicle shakes, vibrates or wobbles when accelerating in low gears. It stops when easing up on the gas pedal. It typically occurs when the vehicle shifts (automatic transmission) between the 1st and 2nd gears. The whole car shakes. The only way to stop it is by removing foot from gas pedal or accelerating car quickly to higher speed. The issue affects the ability to safely accelerate to proper speed. Begins when accelerating from a stopped position all the way up until car reaches about 40-45 miles per hour. Occurs on all types of road conditions but is very pronounced when driving on a flat surface. I have taken my vehicle to be serviced at the Honda of the avenues and I was told it was resolved. It hasn't been resolved and I have been traveling so I haven't had the chance to take it back. I am up to date with all my oil changes and maintenance. I see that I am not the only one with this issue with my 2012 Honda crv as others with the same vehicle are complaining online. This should be part of a recall service.

21 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 12/14/2016

Heater is blowing very cold air (28 deg) on driver side, (130 deg) on passenger side. This condition is when the vehicle is stationery, it becomes much colder when in motion. There was a TSB created November 2014, regarding this problem.

22 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 07/13/2016

Engine rattles at cold start-up - vtc actuator needs replacement. The Honda dealer (criswell Honda, germantown MD) doing the maintenance says that I have gone past the warranty. But I have been there multiple times for service before and mentioned about the issue. They did not fix it or explained to me the issues. They are charging me $800 now for this. Based on current search in google, this is what I find. Please help Honda TSB number:a09-010. V4 NHTSA number:10087883tsb date:March 17, 2016 failing component: engine (pws) summary: service bulletin - replace the vtc actuator if the engine rattles loudly for 2 seconds during cold start-up.

23 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2016

Our car started vibrating during light acceleration between 20-30 mph just over 40,000 miles (warranty). This vibration is very noticeable around town while running errands. The whole car shakes! if pushed hard on the accelerator the issue does not happen, for instance when going on the freeway. We found a service bulletin #15-086 dated August 18, 2016 thanks to our mechanic, currently Feb. 2017. However when we called the dealership where the vehicle was purchased, we were told that Honda has taken the service bulletin down because they found the recommended software update and replacement of the a/t fluid, was not found to solve the problem. So he said there was nothing to be done to fix this issue. They know there is a problem, and yet no solution. So here we are stuck with a vehicle that we bought for the Honda brand and yet if we want to sell it, test driving it will reveal its major issue and we will not get blue book value for it. Bad return on investment. So really I will have to drive this car around, vibrating all over town, even though my family has now outgrown it, and not be able to upgrade fairly to a bigger car. I wanted a pilot, but Honda's lack of concern over this apparent issue does not instill buyers trust in them again. More like buyers remorse.

24 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 03/16/2016

There is a known issue with the vtc on many Hondas from 2008-2014. Honda is only covering the issue under the standard warranty though it is a known issue.

25 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 01/12/2016

Low heat from the drivers side vent. Had to have the heater core flushed. Its a known issue with this car and there is an official Honda service bulletin (14-063) for this problem. Had to pay $450 to have this fixed.

26 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2016

Heater/defroster on driver's side not putting out warm air. Windows not being defrosted - safety issue. Honda has long recognized this problem and issued a service bulletin 14-063 but refused to correct with charging several hundred dollars. This should be fixed no-charge as it is a safety issue.

27 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 11/13/2015

Sudden acceleration: when foot on brake, the engine surges.

28 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 04/22/2015

We have a problem with noise when starting in cold weather. There is a hesitation sometimes when driving like not getting fuel.

29 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 10/18/2014

I went to park in a diagonal, on street parking spot, and applied the brake to stop. The car instead accelerated, jumped the curb and proceeded into an adjoining parking lot. I turned hard right to avoid vehicles and struck the retaining wall at the back of the lot with my left front quarter panel. This impact steepened the turn and shot me back out of the lot and onto the street. I proceeded up the street, the car accelerating all the time. I tried to determine if I was accidentally stepping on the gas, and felt I was indeed on the brake. My car proceeded rapidly up the street, over 1/10th mile in distance. In a panic to try and stop the car I stomped on the emergency brake, which locked up the rear wheels. My rear tires were in a skid for over 150 feet, which produced a sideways skid, the car turning right and slamming broadside into a park vehicle which stopped me. I feel this is a case of unintended acceleration, and have been made aware of other such incidents in late model crvs.

30 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 09/22/2013

While driving, I smelled some burning, and saw white smokes, so pulled over, and turned off the engine, got out of the car. After 30 seconds or (possibly a few mins), it caught fire (engine under the hood), and people around us tried to put out the fire using their own fire extinguisher to no avail. Fire truck arrived within minutes , and was able to put out fire. At this time, insurance does not seem really interested in finding out the root cause. Honda dealer says they are out of the mix since they did not service the vehicle. Honda America is saying that they will not look into this and simply wait for the outcome from insurance investigation. Honda has a history of recalls (cr-v) associated with fire hazards specificaly from 2002-2006, and 2012 Cr-v could be defective as well, but their responses over this accident is simply outrageous. So I'm filing a complaint against NHTSA, hoping that someone in the agency can take a look at this, and get to the bottom of this fire incidence, and hopefully, this can prevent "fatal" disasters in the future.

31 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2012

The cam actuator gear assembly" part #14310r44a01, act. Assy. , 46t vtc this part rattles for a few seconds on startup. It has been happening (especially in cold weather) since the car was one year old (it is now 3 years and 8 months old).

32 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 11/21/2012

Bought this car new about a month ago. The only problem I have been having is that at certain times, usually at slower speeds, when I step on the gas there is a 2-3 second delay before the car accelerates. During this hesitation period, the engine does not rev, and the car just coasts. This has happened 10-12 time this past month. This is very dangerous when I am trying to merge into faster moving traffic. I took my car to the dealer, but they could not duplicate the condition nor find anything wrong. They told me they reported the issue to Honda national.

33 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 09/14/2012

This has occurred multiple times. I was driving, came to a stop and was unable to accelerate to 25 mph. The car hesitated upon acceleration and then suddenly accelerated. Normally when it occurs it has happened after a stop at a light, stop sign or corner. However, it has also happened while I've been on the highway, let off the gas and then attempted to accelerate. I brought it to my Honda dealer for repair and they cannot duplicate the circumstances. I reported it to Honda headquarters and they can do nothing if the dealer the can not find the problem and had no other complaints about this problem which seems unlikely. This is very scary and could lead to a collision.

34 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 05/16/2012

In stop and go traffic, with and without the econ button on, the car hesitates to accelerate to the point that it has nearly caused accidents. Took it to Honda and asked them to drive to witness the problem. I don't think they drove it. The problem is somewhat intermittent, so you never know when it will happen. You have to adjust your driving just in case it might happen. The dealer told me not to drive with econ button in city driving conditions. That doesn't make a difference. It will cause accident eventually.

35 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2012

Submission from constituent re 2012 Honda Cr-v intermittent problem. The consumer stated the vehicle would pause, when she attempted to accelerate after the vehicle, had been idling. There was zero response for 3-4 seconds, then the vehicle would uncontrollably surge forward. The dealer was unable to duplicate the problem. The dealer informed the consumer, the problem was her using her left foot to brake. The problem has since been resolved. Updated 01/30/14.
