1 Steering problem of the 2009 Honda Element

Failure Date: 06/13/2025

Just like the same era's Honda cr-v (the Honda Element's sibling car with many of the same components), the undercarriage rust on my vehicle is excessive: as described in the same era Honda cr-v's NHTSA recall (23v-228). Large sections of my car’s rear frame are completely missing, as shown in the photographs. My car is now undriveable. I had it towed to two Honda dealerships at my expense and both refused to even look at the car's rust, when I explicitly asked them to determine if the car was safe to drive. Niether dealership would confirm. Honda corporate cited that they were unable to assess the photographs that I sent to it because it does not physically inspect the cars. Honda corporate also insisted that it could not do anything about any dealership’s behavior as they are allegedly completely independent from Honda of north America. Honda corporate also looked up the history of my Hondas that I have owned and Elements that I still own and actually asked me, if I purchased them just to try to have Honda fix them for free. Just like with the cr-v, a recall for the rear frame corrosion first occurred in canada and then in the see NHTSA recall 23v-228’s chronology. The Honda Element's canadian recall is as follows: "transport canada recall - 2021024 – Honda". As of today, there is no NHTSA recall for rear frame corrosion for Honda Elements. I am submitting this complaint for this car now, and also contemporaneous will submit less detailed complaints under different vins for my other Elements with rust problems: every Honda Element that I have ever owned, even one that had spent its entire 14 year life as a new mexico, arizona, and texas car has had rust problems. In other words, no matter what environment these Elements (which were made for the model years 2003-2011) are in, they corrode right away (within any factory warranties), and eventually become dangerous.

4 Steering problem of the 2004 Honda Element

Failure Date: 05/29/2023

While driving down a city street, heard a very loud crack/bang, and lost control of the vehicle. Fortunately I was going slow, 20-30mph and was able to safely stop. Upon exiting the vehicle, the rear driver side wheel was hanging at a weird angle. Looking under the car, the entire trailing arm and wheel assembly has broken off of the frame. If I was going faster, or had been on the highway, this would have caused an accident/rollover and injury for sure. Looking online for more information, I see that this is a known issue, and Honda has already issued a recall, but only for canada. Vehicle was towed to and inspected by a aaa certified auto shop; they have written it off as a total loss, and suggest to sell the vehicle for parts. I contacted Honda, and they have told me to take it to a dealership for additional inspection by them.

5 Steering problem of the 2005 Honda Element

Failure Date: 01/09/2023

I have a 2005 Honda Element, undercarriage and suspension components have severe rust. I tried to get an inspection from virginia and it failed immediately due to the rust. The mechanic lowered the vehicle as quickly as he could because of it falling off the lift. Ultimately he told it is unsafe to drive. After doing some research I found out that Honda canada has done a recall on Honda Elements from 2003-2010 due to this common issue and here is what they wrote. Issue: on certain vehicles, the rear frame could rust. In extreme cases, this could result in a rear trailing arm separating from the vehicle. This recall applies to vehicles originally sold or currently registered in areas of heavy road salt usage (ontario, quebec, new brunswick, nova scotia, prince edward island, and newfoundland & labrador). Safety risk: a rear trailing arm that separates could cause a loss of control and increase the risk of a crash. Corrective actions: Honda will notify owners by mail. Owners will be instructed to take their vehicle to a dealer for an inspection of the rear trailing arm front mount bolts. If the vehicle passes the inspection, the dealer will apply corrosion protection and install support braces. Honda will offer to repurchase vehicles that do not pass the inspection. In the event the repurchase is declined by an owner, a secondary inspection and body shop repair method may be possible.

6 Steering problem of the 2003 Honda Element

Failure Date: 07/20/2021

The rear trailing arm of the car came off while driving. The part of the frame where the suspension connects rusted through. I looked up related cases and it seams that there is a recall only in canada and not in the us. This is dangerous and almost sent me off the road with no warning. Everything else on the car works wonderfully and the car rand and drove great until this happened.

8 Steering problem of the 2011 Honda Element

Failure Date: 08/08/2018

Aluminum steering wheel hub support mounting bracket has cracked and is broken in two places. This has happened over a time period during normal usage of my vehicle. The steering wheel is wobbley and loosened. Honda dealer service department disassembled and reviewed components of steering wheel and told me that it was not safe to drive. I was told that if the remaining two bracket spokes continued to fatigue and actually broke, while I was driving my vehicle, I would be holding my steering wheel in my hands and would not have any steering control of my car. This is unsafe and dangerous. The dealers servicemen told me that they would not drive this car if it was theirs. I was given a cost estimate for the part of $800 plus the cost of labor. I believe that this part is defective due to improper engineering/design and material specifications proposed in the fabrication of this part. I believe that this is a consumer safety hazard that must be reviewed by NHTSA before people are injured or killed in an accident.

10 Steering problem of the 2005 Honda Element

Failure Date: 11/22/2015

The car will stall when in motion and turning the steering wheel to make a turn. 11 Steering problem of the 2008 Honda Element

Failure Date: 11/15/2015

The contact owns a 2008 Honda Element. While making left and right turns and depressing the brake pedal, the accelerator pedal and steering wheel locked up, which caused the vehicle to shake. The dealer could not replicate the failure or repair the vehicle. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The failure mileage was 70,000.

12 Steering problem of the 2005 Honda Element

Failure Date: 12/02/2013

This issue has occurred multiple times over the course of a two month time frame. On cold mornings, within the first five minutes of driving the car, the car just shuts off, leaving me without brakes, steering, or acceleration. This would require me to take out the key and restart the engine. No error codes are being generated and the air/heat as well as radio continues to work. This has become quite a dangerous situation because the other vehicles are unaware I cannot move the car and the randomness of when this occurs. There is no pattern to it, although it will only happen within the first 5 minutes of driving the car and it will happen when in acceleration or deceleration. My dealership was unable to recreate this issue even after keeping it a couple days. I hope this issue can be figured out, fixed, and recalled so that I can feel safe again when driving my car.

13 Steering problem of the 2005 Honda Element

Failure Date: 05/14/2013

The srs light came on. I've determined the cause for the light is a defective clock-spring. This is a safety defect and should be covered by Honda.

14 Steering problem of the 2003 Honda Element

Failure Date: 08/31/2011

Tumblers in ignition becomes mal aligned, key will not insert or turn, engine will not start. This is not part of the current active recall on the ignition system. I have replaced the ignition lock cylinder twice in 3 years. It is a common occurrence, ask any one who drives a 2003 Element, they've replaced this part too. Honda only warranties the part for one year.

15 Steering problem of the 2005 Honda Element

Failure Date: 08/01/2011

The contact owns a 2005 Honda Element. The contact was driving 35 mph when the vehicle started to jerk violently from side to side. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer and the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 48,000.

16 Steering problem of the 2004 Honda Element

Failure Date: 02/23/2011

I took my Honda Element to the dealer complaining of a vibration in the right front of the car. I was told that my compliance bushings needed replaced but axles were fine. I picked up my car only to have the same problem. Upon further examination, the mechanic came to the conclusion that the right axle was bad. I had that replaced still have a vibration. I have now been told to replace the left axle. I came upon an interesting thread on a forum stating that Honda held education meetings about the frame causing the axles to wear incorrectly. Inner joint bearings rolling out of joint, abnormal wear. Not outside of the surface of the bearings but actual inside bearings octagoned. My vehicle has only 68, 000 miles on it and I have been told by a Honda service manager that it is extremely rare for one axle to go bad and unheard of for 2 to go bad. I am wondering if anything can be done if Honda is covering up a faulty axle problem and possibly faulty design of the vehicle being that the frame is too heavy for the components. I have also been told that my rear struts as well as rear compliance bushings will need to be replaced as well but are not bad enough yet. I also have a driver's seat that rocks back and forth and Honda claims to know nothing about this problem as well. This is also my 4th set of tires on this car. It literally eats the tires until they are bald. I am not the only person with these problems as they are on forums on the internet. Can anything be done about this?.

17 Steering problem of the 2010 Honda Element

Failure Date: 12/30/2010

We have had to repair the front suspension parts the entire front suspension and steering component on our 2010 Honda Element ex and from the very first time we drove it. It never drove right. It would jerk you out of a curve we took it back to the dealer twice and they kept telling us it was because we were not used to driver assist system. Well since then 5 times we have had the front end steering and suspension replaced thousands of dollars! why has there not been a recall? and from friends responses it's not just the Element, it's Honda civic and Honda accord also, the parts are made too short. Honda even has a extension kit but you can't buy it! why has there been no recall?.

18 Steering problem of the 2004 Honda Element

Failure Date: 03/22/2010

While driving down expressway, steering wheel tilt lock came loose allowing steering wheel to move up & down. After stopping & raising tilt lever to upward position (lock), I continued on and it did it again (lever falling down). Now lever will not remain in "up" or "locked" position. Very un-nerving when braking or turning. Awaiting return call from out of town Honda dealer. Local Honda dealer said they wanted $90. 00 up front as a "diagnostic fee" before they would even look at it. . . . . . . .

19 Steering problem of the 2004 Honda Element

Failure Date: 07/24/2004

While driving, the vehicle's steering locked. The vehicle's tire valve was faulty and resulted in a flat tire. When the steering locked for the second time, the vehicle shut down. The consumer was able to pull over to the shoulder and the vehicle restarted without incident. The dealer was unable to find any malfunction.
