1 Steering problem

Failure Date: 05/23/2024

The contact owns a 2007 Honda Fit. The contact stated that the vehicle recently lost power steering functionality while pulling into the driveway. Additionally, the contact stated while the vehicle was being serviced by an independent mechanic, the mechanic informed the contact that the subframe was rusted. The vehicle was towed to the dealer to be diagnosed due to sub frame rust; however, the dealer informed the contact that the vehicle could not be diagnosed due to the severe rust. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but provided no assistance because the vehicle was out of warranty. The failure mileage was approximately 62,000. The VIN was not available.

3 Steering problem

Failure Date: 01/03/2022

The power steering indicator lights up and there is no power steering when the car is started. Sometimes the light goes out and the power steering is active after driving several miles. But, frequently the steering does not improve after 25-30 miles of driving. This makes it very difficult when trying to navigate turns, and backing up. The problem according to the mechanics is the electronic power steering module (eps module).

4 Steering problem

Failure Date: 12/18/2021

The electronic power steering stopped working.

5 Steering problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2021

The contact owns a 2007 Honda Fit. The contact stated that while starting the vehicle or while driving at various speeds, the power steering assist would fail to operate as needed with the power steering warning light illuminated. The contact stated that excessive force was needed to steer the vehicle once the power steering assist failed. The manufacturer nor the dealer had yet to be notified of the failure. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was unknown.

6 Steering problem

Failure Date: 04/14/2021

When I went to turn my car on the key/ignition does not turn,.

7 Steering problem

Failure Date: 09/26/2017

I own a 2007 Honda Fit sport and just yesterday while the car was parked and not running, I went to start it to leave work and the eps indicator light came on, steering wheel locked and car would not start. Was told a few things to try; bypassing battery cables clearing the circut, checked the fuse and neither worked(worth a try just to say we did so we would know). Finally had it towed to automotive shop, left over night only to find out the car started right away with no warning light on (eps indicator) for the mechanic. They drove it around, turned off, restarted and it started right up. Also hooked up to their code tool and no codes came up. My concern here is that this will happen again to myself, my 16 year old son, my 13 year old son riding as a passenger, or other passengers while driving (our only form of transportation) and cause an accident, harm, injury, or possibly death to ourselves and others around us. This is not safe and Honda should fix this issue regardless of how old the vehicle is or the mileage. It's a hazard to every life!.

8 Steering problem

Failure Date: 04/30/2017

Was in an accident after recall in which the front end was crushed completely and none of the airbags opened recently took car in for recall prior and complained about other concerns with car at dealership.

9 Steering problem

Failure Date: 04/18/2016

Eps failure: last month, after a gas station stop; I started the car, to see the electric power steering (eps) indicator lit. Finding the power steering not working, I checked the manual. Turning the car off & on as recommended reset the indicator and unlocked the power steering. The problem has occurred several more times since then. Last week the problem happened three times, and persisted until I drove a short distance. I'm worried about failure in traffic, during a turn, etc. Reading online, I found many drivers reporting this trouble with both older and newer Fits, low and high mileage; sometimes happening while driving. The trouble can occur at highway speeds, a dangerous situation. The issue is detailed in Honda service bulletin 09-043, July 7, 2009.

10 Steering problem

Failure Date: 09/05/2014

As I was driving up a hill, on a curve, at about 40mph, the power steering locked. I was so close to getting in a multi-vehicle car accident. Usually this eps problem happens first thing, right when I start the car in the morning every once in a while and according to the owner's manual, when this problem happens, we are supposed to turn the car off and turn it back on. Obviously, Honda acknowledges there is a problem with the eps, except this time, it happened while I was driving. I don't feel safe driving the car. This problem could lead to accidents, including fatalities. They should have a recall on this part instead of just doing a service bulletin. Gm has a similar problem, if not the same, and they care enough about their clients to do a recall and fix the problem, rather then just provide a service bulletin. Honda should do the same for the safety of their clients.

11 Steering problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2014

Power steering went out. Car was extremely hard to turn. Turned the car off and restarted it and the steering work. This is an extremely dangerous problem. Please issue a recall.

12 Steering problem

Failure Date: 06/06/2014

Upon restarting the car after a rest stop the steering wheel was noted to be upside down. It could be turned 360 or more degrees when the car was not moving. The steering worked when the car was moving, but at a stop it may be turned freely again.

13 Steering problem

Failure Date: 12/05/2013

Power steering went out while driving. Was fine after restart, but this is dangerous. Dealer only reset computer. This problem is all over the NHTSA site, and the car needs to be recalled!.

14 Steering problem

Failure Date: 08/15/2013

Once in August 2013 I was making a right turn and power steering went out. Then again this time in April 2014 power steering went out again while driving, this time I was going around 45 mph. Both times, when you turn car off and start again power steering works fine.

15 Steering problem

Failure Date: 10/19/2012

While going 65mph on the freeway the power steering gave out and the little light icon on the dash turned on. Luckily, because I was going so fast I didn't need to turn the steering wheel much in order to get the car to move off to an exit. When the power steering gives out the wheel is almost impossible to turn. After that it would happen intermittently. Sometimes I would turn on the car and immediately the icon would light up and there would be no power steering. Then I would shut the car off and on again and then it would work again. Then I finally got stuck somewhere and had to be towed to the dealer. They had to replace the power steering computer? it cost $600+5 hours of labor. Now, almost a year later, it happens again. Now they are saying that it is the motor connected to the power steering? anyhow, super dangerous to be able to lose steering capabilities at any time.

16 Steering problem

Failure Date: 08/13/2012

My wife was driving on a main street at 35 mph. The power steering went out. An indicator light came on the dash board after the steering quit. She was able to get the car home with out the power steering. We found a forum on line where we found the problem addressed. Once we re-started the car the power steering worked. The people on the forum have complained that it will happen again. I am concerned about the safety of my wife and children. If it goes out whenever what will happen the next time?.

17 Steering problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2012

The power steering system acts up and causes you to loose power steering while you're driving making the steering of the car super stiff at a moments notice. According to forums online this, problem is very common amongst Honda Fit owners and most peoples' issue is caused by a faulty electronic power steering control unit. My issue is the same faulty component.

18 Steering problem

Failure Date: 03/24/2012

The contact owns a 2007 Honda Fit. While driving on a mountainous road approximately 30 mph, the steering wheel seized without warning. The vehicle uncontrollably traveled off the road and crashed into a fence. The vehicle then turned completely over and landed back on the wheels. The air bags deployed and the contact and front seat passenger sustained severe injuries. Both were transported to the hospital by medical evacuation. The vehicle was declared as destroyed and towed to a collision facility. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 40,000.

19 Steering problem

Failure Date: 03/24/2012

Steering wheel suddenly seized up, range of motion about 10 degrees either way; ps warning light appeared on dash. Was able to slow, turn off road, park, consult manual. Restarted engine, ps warning light went off; was able to drive normally to dealer service dept. For advice. They said continue driving, return if any future incidents.

20 Steering problem

Failure Date: 12/19/2011

Accelerated out of an intersection, from a stop at a stop sign, car lost power, steering. . . Coasted across intersection to a stop. Called for a tow. While waiting, attempted to start car-it started. Drove home and had it towed to dealer, examined for several days, could not find a problem to fix. Same problem just occurred while car was in motion driving at approximately 30 miles per hour. Car suddenly lost steering/power. Got car to side of road. Again, it restarted on its own after a few minutes. Weather conditions cold and dry.

21 Steering problem

Failure Date: 08/22/2011

We are having consistent problems with rubbing and squealing noises with right turns. It is very concerning as the rubbing has to be damaging the steering system in some way. Something is definitely going wrong here. It needs to be investigated.

22 Steering problem

Failure Date: 08/07/2011

Power steering suddenly shuts off - the event has happened on several occasions over the past 3 years: twice while driving - serious safety risk as car becomes extremely difficult to steer without warning; and three times when starting the car - no power steering immediately upon start. During all events, the eps light came on. During all events, shutting the car of then turning it back on remedied the situation, but this is very hazardous while driving.

23 Steering problem

Failure Date: 06/12/2011

2007 Honda Fit power steering stopped functioning on several occasions while the vehicle was being operated.

24 Steering problem

Failure Date: 04/18/2011

The electric power steering doesn't work.

25 Steering problem

Failure Date: 04/14/2011

Loss of power steering. It was parked the first time it happened, in 2011. It didn't happen again for a couple years. Now it has happened several times in the last 24 hours, on 06/10/2014. Mostly while parked/idle. Once while in traffic. I live in the mountains on a windy road. This is very dangerous! Honda should issue a recall. I have read about their service bulletin on the issue (replacing eps control unit. ).

26 Steering problem

Failure Date: 03/17/2011

Every morning when the temperature is below 40 degrees I have no power steering making it very difficult to drive the car. It is a 2007 Honda Fit.

27 Steering problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2010

I started my 2007 Honda Fit sport model to pull out of a parallel parking spot. When I backed up and turned the steering wheel, the steering locked and I was unable to turn the tires. I could however move the car forward and backward. I turned off the engine, got out and inspected the car. Nothing appeared amiss. When I restarted the vehicle, it worked normally. I contacted my Honda dealer and was told they probably wouldn't be able to diagnose the problem without being able to recreate it. However, after the car was in the shop, they advised that one of their mechanics remembered a technical service bulletin - TSB 09-043 - that referred to the problem. The eps control unit would need to be replaced. Since I have read that this problem can also occur while the car is moving, I strongly believe this should be a recall item instead of merely a TSB! in my case, I was lucky that one of Honda's employees just happened to remember it. I was also advised by the Honda service employees that it was an "intermittent" problem and the car was safe to drive. How can a car be safe to drive when the steering locks up?.

28 Steering problem

Failure Date: 02/05/2010

I purchased my 2007 Honda Fit approximately one year ago at 49,000 miles. My eps indicator came on less than one week after purchase; it is possible that this was an issue prior to the purchase of my car. On page 62 of my owners manual it says to restart the engine and the issue should go away so that is what I did. It only reccomended to have it checked if the light didn't go away when restarted. The issue happened several times over the past year but always went away after restarting the engine. It seems to happen more during cold weather. I had it checked by a local mechanic and he could find nothing wrong with it. After it started happening with increased frequency, and persisted after multiple restarts (although if I came back hours later it would be fine) I decided to take it to the dealer where it was diagnosed with "eps control unit internal failure, eps contol unit needs replaced" not covered under warranty and it costs $800 to replace. This is a frightening safety issue because the wheel is virtually impossible to turn when this indicator is on. I have been very fortunate in that it has never come on while I am driving although from my research on this issue I have learned there are others that have not been as lucky as I have in this regard. It is also frightening that this is not an issue that is easily diagnosed my mechanics outside the dealership. For Honda owners like myself that live an hour away from the closest dealer; we are likely to take it somewhere closer first; where we are told theres nothing wrong with our car, although there is a potentially life-threatening issue wrong with the car.

29 Steering problem

Failure Date: 11/05/2009

Without warning, the electric power steering (eps) light lit on my dashboard and my power steering locked up completely. I had no ability to turn into a parking lot to safely leave the road. To solve the problem I had to turn my vehicle off at a stop light and restart the engine. I have a 2007 Honda Fit and luckily, the part is under warranty. However, I've been told by the dealer to continue driving my vehicle while the problem hasn't been fixed. I feel this is a very unsafe performance problem and a recall is in order.

30 Steering problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2009

The steering wheel locks and lock light is on when the car is running. I turn the engine off and restart the car and it then clears it. I have looked online at other peoples blogs and have come across a few other complaints about this. It hasn't caused an accident but I am concerned about it.

31 Steering problem

Failure Date: 07/06/2009

The contact owns a 2007 Honda Fit. While attempting to make a turn after braking at a stop sign, the contact noticed that the steering wheel suddenly locked up. Prior to the failure, the steering wheel would lock into place when the vehicle was started. The vehicle has not been diagnosed by the dealer. The current and failure mileages were 58,298.

32 Steering problem

Failure Date: 02/18/2009

Driving my 2007 Honda Fit the power steering stopped working. The car was very difficult to steer. Had to pull off the road shut down the engine and wait about 5 minutes before starting car. When car was started power steering returned. I contacted Honda of America and was told that they did not receive any other complaints about this problem. I have made an appointment with a Honda dealer to have this problem checked.

33 Steering problem

Failure Date: 09/15/2008

The contact owns a 2007 Honda Fit. While starting the vehicle, the contact noticed that the steering wheel was very stiff and difficult to turn. The contact turned the vehicle off and restarted it; after the restart, the vehicle functioned properly. The failure occurred intermittently for the past two years and was worse in cold weather. The vehicle had not been inspected or repaired. The VIN was unavailable. The failure mileage was approximately 40,000 and the current mileage was approximately 90,000.

34 Steering problem

Failure Date: 09/03/2008

The contact owns a 2007 Honda Fit. The contact stated that immediately after starting the vehicle, the power steering warning lamp illuminated. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure and the vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was unknown and the current mileage was 70,000. The VIN was not available.
