I have a 2019 Honda Insight that has had two previous air conditioner failures that were covered under an extended warranty that Honda issued for the compressor and condenser based on known problems with the system. The air conditioner, as of 6/2025, has again failed for the third time. The local dealer victory Honda of morgan hill diagnosed a leaking evaporator which Honda is refusing to cover as the car is out of factory warranty. Upon researching the matter online I learned it is a widespread issue and even resulted in an unsuccessful class action lawsuit. The air conditioner failures are a safety issue because the defroster does not function effectively without it. This can result in fogged windows causing impaired visibility while driving. I believe that the evaporator repair should be included in the 10 year air conditioner condenser and compressor warranty that Honda previously issued. The air conditioner is a closed system and whatever the root issues causing failures are, they don’t appear to be limited to just the two components covered under the extended warranty that Honda issued.

The 2022 Honda Insight has an issue with "phantom touches" on the infotainment system. The system will frequently select buttons and change your screen, when no one is touching the panel. It will also freeze up, where you have no control over it. Why is this a safety hazard? because when you're driving down the road and it takes your map away, you are constantly fighting the system trying to get your directions back, and in the process, your attention is taken off the road. When it flips radio stations on you randomly, and you keep having to try to flip it back. When it randomly pulls up your phone contact list, you have to immediately hit the home button so it doesn't dial someone. This nonsense happens a lot, and has been ongoing since I bought the car a few years ago, especially when it's warmer outside. The last time I was at my Honda dealer I asked them to look at it. They didn't know what was causing it, but said the firmware needed to be updated, so they did that and nothing changed. To get a full understanding of what it's like, I posted a few videos. Just watch the first 30 seconds of the first video and you will immediately understand what it's like driving with this (as I am driving in this video) and seeing the buttons randomly pressed by "phantom touches. " in the second video you can see what happens when the screen changes but is frozen (no matter what I try it doesn't respond). . . [xxx] . . . . [xxx] . . . . [xxx] . . . . Here is also one of several reddit threads regarding the issue: [xxx] . . . Like me, others haven't been given any straight answer from Honda. This needs to be recalled. It's a major distraction while driving! information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

Consistent failure of a/c evaporator and condensor, which causes failure of entire a/c system and requires expensive replacement parts/repairs. Recall issued on condensor but not on evaporator, which makes no sense. Both are needed for a/c to run. The leaks from condensor and evaporator impact function of the engine by making it skip on acceleration. It also impacts the filter systems. Dangerous for health and safety.
Radio/infotainment touchscreen often freezes up and has phantom inputs, which can exit navigation and change the audio source. This causes huge distraction to the driver. The frustrating thing about this is that it's an intermittent issue, so the service center can't replicate it when I bring it in. This has been an ongoing issue with many 3rd generation Insights, and I was told by the service center that Honda has an internal investigation going. I have brought my vehicle in to multiple service centers and none have been able to replicate or fix the issue.
Vehicle a/c system did not effectively cool cabin in warm weather on long drives. Last trip there were white particles coming from the vents. There is a known issue with the systems and Honda extended the warranty on a/c system due to problem condensors. Brought it to a dealer who found that the evaporator was leaking causing refrigerant to enter cabin area. Dealer quoted over $1500 to replace a part that was defective from the factory. Vehicle is out of bumper to bumper warranty and Honda has refused to cover the repairs.
I am urging your immediate attention to a safety issue affecting the 2021 Honda Insight. The vehicle’s infotainment system, which controls key safety features including the tire pressure monitoring system (tpms), has failed. This malfunction prevents drivers from monitoring tire pressures, applying necessary software updates, and accessing navigation and hands-free features, which significantly increases the risk of accidents. The system's failure distracts drivers and compromises critical vehicle safety functions, warranting an urgent recall investigation. Thank you for your attention to this critical matter.

Backup camera failed and displaying rainbow colors. Persistent issue. Creates a safety hazard due to backup camera being inoperable.
Approximately 29-30 months after purchase multiple panels of the car are peeling with paint. Small knicks continue to bubble and get larger. Honda is not covering this problem because the milage is past 36,000 but this is clearly a manufacturing defect; the dealership did fix two panels for us (photos starting with a 1 and 2) free of charge but will not cover a third repair (photos starting with a 3). I think this vehicle is defective and should be completely repainted or exchanged.
I received the "important safety recall" letter in March 2024 from the Honda automobile division regarding the seat weight sensor circuit board. The letter said that in a crash, the airbags could deploy in a dangerous fashion. I have called my Honda dealer three times since that date. Today, sept. 10, 2024, I was told again that the dealer did not have the parts to perform the repair, and that it had no idea when it would receive them. I called the national Honda number. Same answer. I called 888-327-4236 to see if NHTSA had more information, held on the phone, then provided my number for a call back. When the NHTSA returned the call, the line was choppy. Either the call dropped, or she hung up on me. She did not call back. I have waited patiently for five months. Neither NHTSA nor my local Honda dealer is able or willing to tell me when this safety issue will be resolved. What is the problem and what is NHTSA doing about it?.
Roof and hood of car lost all paint and clear coat. Starting to rust.

This has been happening with my two Honda cads. I currently have Honda 2023 crv and 2021 Honda Insight. The collison mitigation braking system brakes really hard for no reason.
I have filed a complaint to the Honda motor company in torrence, California. I have notifed Honda of a serious defect with our vehicles collision mitiagation braking system. Here are the defects with our Honda Insight 2022 vehicle: 1) on three occasions while my wife nino is driving on the 470 freeway in colorado between lone tree and littleton CO. Brake warning light comes on, light comes on randomly while driving 65 mph, then the collision mitiagation braking system comes on and slows the vehicle down to 15 mph while on the freeway speed of 65 mph. While the brakes are engaging a forceful vacuum and pressure enters the cabin and that pressure goes to my wife's chest which casues pain. 2) 4th event was on August 15, 2023 while driving south on kipling Ave in littleton CO. My wife nino was driving home appx 6:00 pm at 45-50 mph, when the vehicle did the same thing again, brake warning light displays orange yellow color, then the brakes engage to slow the vehicle down, then pressure and vacuum inside the cabin occurs with pressure towards my wife's chest. I have sent a letter yesterday to the Honda motor company. I would like to kindly request that you do an investigation into this matter. This defect on our vehicle is a life and dealth situation defect. My wife has been extremely lucky that no collision occured as a result of these horrible experiences. If the Honda motor comany has not required a recall, then they should be doing this ASAP to prevent unecessary accidents to prevent citizens from dying. Our vehicle was towed on August 16, 2023 to kuni Honda in centennial CO. So far, the service manager said they have not been able to find the problem, but then he changed his story and said something needed to be adjusted 2-3 degrees. I requested more detailed information. I called yesterday to request the tow record and service repair records and they have not provided that info to me yet. Thank you for your attention to this serious matter.
Experiencing a dead or faulty battery issue in my 2022 Honda Insight. I called the Honda dealership to see if I could charge the battery from the points noted in the owners manual. The service representative said yes. Charged the battery to 100% and proceeded directly to the dealership for service. During the drive to the dealership I experienced the dashboard lights and annunciation display with errors. Tpms, electric steering, brakes, traction control, and to see my dealer. “on my way”… during the repair process and extended waiting period of about 2 hours. It was initially determined the steering wheel was “not centered”, cocked to the left, and would need a wheel alignment. How much is that $179. You must have hit a curb or something. No I did not, and would seek a second opinion first before I allowed that service. Let’s fix the battery and dashboard light error lights first. Proceeding the battery was determined faulty, testing at 95 cca and would be replaced under warranty. But, upon test driving the car it was still having a traction control skid type light coming on and off, and a diagnostic fee of $158 may be required. I said, shouldn’t that be an issue related to the battery going bad and causing or the cause of the traction control light? we’ll have to see, he said. I asked to speak to the manager and decided I was at tge mercy of the dealership to find a resolve and authorized service. Upon researching on the internet, during my waiting period for the battery change, I learned their is a “steering angle sensor” located under the steering wheel that my need recalibration to resolve the offset steering wheel observation of the service representative. The cause of this need for recalibration may be because of a collision, remove/replacement of a battery. The recalibration requires a special diagnostic electronic device to interface with the cars computer(s). The receipt for service said “calibrated system”.
The air conditioning system in my 2019 Honda Insight touring edition has failed three times in the last 3 years. Why is this a safety issue? in southern California summer temperatures reach into the 90s and driving without air conditioning is impossible for any distance. For example today it is 93 degrees fahrenheit in los angeles. It's impossible to use my car without air conditioning. Additionally, the a/c failure causes water vapor to condense on the windshield glass making it difficult to see through it and is an additional safety issue. The ac failure in the Honda Insights is a known issue to Honda USA. They have extended warranties of the air conditioning units to 10 years. This acknwledgement proves that Honda know of the issue and don't want to resolve it for consumers.
On 2/16/23 I was driving on the highway when I heard a loud pop/bang like an explosion or loud crash on the top of my car. There were barely any cars around, no trucks spewing debris, I wasn’t going under an overpass, and I didn’t see anything fly up from the road. I had a passenger in the car who was looking out the windows at the road and didn’t see anything either. I opened the covering for the moon roof to see if something was stuck to the roof and my moon roof had exploded for no reason. Shattered glass fell into my car. My safety and the safety of others was at risk because I was in shock by what happened and it startled me while I was driving. Also, my car is not drive-able until this is fixed and it is through no fault of my own (or anyone else’s beyond the manufacturer). I took the car to a collision center to have the damage assessed for my insurance company. It is isolated to the moon roof, nothing else was damaged. It will be looked at by the dealership on Monday 2/20/23. There were no warning lights or other symptoms of failure prior to the explosion. The moon roof wasn’t cracked or chipped, not compromised in any way. The car is brand new, I bought it new in June 2022.
Driver side headlight failed. Available for inspection upon request. Can't drive without headlight on at nighttime or dark days. I haven't gone to dealer yet. Not inspected by manufacturer yet. Warning and message: headlight system problem. Headlight performance may be reduced. See your dealer. First appeared on 12/12/22. And I was told by gateguard that my left headlight went out, complete off. There was no incident, I didn't even know that it was completely off.
Honda has a feature called "traffic sign recognition system". With its mounted cameras the car is able to capture traffic signs while driving and display them on the dashboard. The problem: the system is not very good at reading traffic signs and posts incorrect speed limits at times. I tried to turn this feature off but Honda does not have an option for that. Displaying the incorrect speed limit is a huge liability for the owner of the car if they decide to lend it to a friend or rent it out.
Rear view camera camera suddenly changed colors and is blurry. Cleaned multiple times and it is still always like this now. Shows neon bright colors instead of reality. Needs software update possibly?? there was a recall for this before and it was fixed by previous owner. But there may need to be a new update drivers are not aware about?.
I was driving down the freeway, around 4pm there wasn't much traffic and the nearest vehicle in front of me was abour 100 meters ahead of me when my 2022 Honda Insight activated the automatic emergency brakes and slowed down for about a second before dis-activating them. Since the vehicle ahead of me was not close at all, there should have been no reason for the automatic brakes to activate. I was lucky there was little traffic at the time and no car was immediately behind me as that could have caused a great accident.
When you turn on the right indicator the camera which shows the right right side of the vehicle it either does not turn on or when it turns on it turns off within a second there is no recall I just wanted to make sure that it's reported and fixed by Honda as a safety issue.
A passenger became locked and trapped in the rear seat compartment after the driver and key fob walked away from the vehicle. The childproof lock setting in either the locked or in the unlocked position does not eliminate the trap. The problem is not addressed in the driver manual. It is highly likely that a passenger will eventually be killed as a result of this design in the event they are trapped in either hot or cold weather.
When putting the car in reverse, the car is making very loud dong dong dong noise. This issue also occurs when the car is in idle (stop for the traffic light). I am not sure if the noise is from the hybrid system, but the noise make one's ears very uncomfortable.

Acc, cmbs, rdm problem ligjts are on. It happens twice time within a year of owning the car. I brought it to the dealer after 3 days of purchased the new car (1st time) and was told that they didn't know what's exactly problem. They tried to reset the system and it worked. Then it happens again, same issue, I brought it back to the dealer and this time they wanted me to replace/reaim the sensor that on the front bumper. This time they blamed it on the missing cover. I did some research online, it's a very common issue and it should be the manufacture problem. They need to do something about it because it could lead to some serious issue.
Damage to the power steering linkage cable and oxygen sensor caused all adas systems to be offline including power steering. If this unit were to be damaged just enough and fail while driving this will likely result in a crash/collision as the car becomes completely undrivable. Luckily so far, this has happened when the vehicle was parked and did not cause any injury. I feel the vehicle is unsafe until they fix this issue. It has happened 3 times now and nothing seems to be being done about this issue as of yet from Honda. This was brought forward to Honda's attention with no affirmation that this is a problem. It first happened in September last year and has happened two additional times since.
I had accident and air never opens.

Apple carplay will occasionally crash during vehicle use, causing the center infotainment console to completely reset. In this period, backup camera and side view camera are inaccessible for 30-60 seconds. This often happens mid operation of vehicle. Fault not of apple, but of Honda's poor implementation of carplay.
Tpms (tire pressure monitoring system) continues to report a problem when there is none. We replaced a tire due to sidewall puncture a couple of months after purchase of car. Replacement was same brand, size, etc except it was not the type of low mileage tread that manufacturers put on new cars in other words it was a typical after market consumer tire. Honda dealer says to their knowledge only fix is to buy new tires 2 at a time or even 4 at a time to avoid tpms warning. This is not a new problem with this type of tpms system. In a form email Honda offered no solution to this problem when we filed complaint on their website. We knew nothing about this problem when purchasing this new vehicle. We are otherwise very satisfied with the car. Very frustrating.
Excessive oil consumption at approximately 60,000 miles. Check emission system light on, low oil however oil light does not alert me. Have to regularly add oil between recommended oil changes.
High oil consumption before every oil change.

Ntsb: 2012 Honda has problems with both shock absorbers were leaking fluid all over the wheel wells. The consumer requested information about the vehicle's airbag recall that was performed. The consumer was informed that repairing the tpms would cost $700. 00. Updated 04/17/2017.
While driving, the vehicle would lose a considerable amount of oil over decreasing amount of miles to the point where the car now loses 1. 5 quarts of oil every 1,000 miles (verified by local Honda dealer shop can not support to investigate why full tank of engine oil was burned off, asked CA chula vista Honda dealer but they said no problem? only erase a caution sign ' checked engine' at the results, while I drove I could hear very noisy sound so I stopped , you can see some piston clutch was damaged and recognized many burned plate surface in side of engine room !! Moulding seal around rear triangle (non-opening) windows detached on both driver and passenger side of car creating an unsealed window and causing rubber 'strips' to flap while driving at a speed over 35mph. Soon after, the entire rubber seal on passenger side door detached allowing moisture and other elements to enter the vehicle. Took vehicle to dealership and was told that moulding is not covered by the manufacturers nor extended warranty that was purchased and that repairs would cost a minimum of $800. I called Honda America to file a complaint and was told they do not maintain a database of defects. I have owned Hondas in the past and have never found them to be so shoddily constructed. I own a 1968 vehicle that still has all moulding in tact. Unacceptable.
