1 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2019 Honda Insight

Failure Date: 01/08/2024

I’m having two continuous, multiple incident, problems that the dealership swears up and down do not exist. I have tried calling the dealership multiple times, and the national Honda customer service line. Problem number one, sudden, breaking while driving at highway speed with no vehicle or other objects in front of me. Second problem is the adaptive cruise control no longer is activated on the vehicle after the most recent software update. Although Honda says they have not removed this component from my car or it’s software, the vehicle no longer slows down automatically when approaching a vehicle from behind while cruise control is activated.

2 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2021 Honda Insight

Failure Date: 02/04/2021

We purchased the vehicle on 1/23/21. On 2/4/21, I was driving in dobson, nc, when the power control unit (pcu) malfunctioned, leading to loss of power steering and brakes. When I started the car, the warning lights came on. I turned the car off and then restarted it without warning lights. I then backed out of the drive and started on my way. As I was descending a hill, the transmission shut off. I was able to coast to a stop with some braking. The car was towed to flow Honda in winston-salem, nc, where they replaced the pcu. We picked up the car on 2/9/21. My wife was able to drive it from winston-salem to durham, nc without incident. She then drove on I-40 towards our home in raleigh, nc. While traveling on I-40 at 65 mph, the pcu malfunctioned again, and the transmission stopped working. She was unable to accelerate, and the power steering and power braking would not function. She was able to coast over to the right lane from two lanes over and then coasted to the exit to safety. When the tow truck came to retrieve the vehicle, the car started but would not get out of park (it could shift into neutral but would revert to park when my foot was taken off the brake). The car was towed to crown Honda of durham, where we purchased the vehicle.

3 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2003 Honda Insight

Failure Date: 12/12/2019

My hybrid battery is overheating which my hybrid battery is 7 years old with only 31,680 miles on it and its affecting the integrated motor assist and the monitor screen with the control gauges and my vehicles acceleration and making it impossible to drive without it shutting off and locking up, I talked to Honda and they refuse to fix it even tho other customers have had the same issue with the hybrid battery and it should still be covered because of the mileage its be used for and has been stored and highly taken care of, the epa classifies hybrid batteries under emissions equipment, requiring manufacturers to warranty them for eight years and 100,000 miles. Some states, like California, require emissions equipment to be covered for ten years and 150,000 miles. If the battery fails within warranty range, your total replacement cost is zero.

4 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2012 Honda Insight

Failure Date: 07/31/2015

On July 31, 2015, at approximately noon, I was traveling south on PA rt. 663 approximately one mile north on rt. 73, weather was clear, temperature approximately 85 f. The speed control had been set at 45 mph but previously disengaged at a stop light. As I accelerated through 40 mph I reengaged the speed control using the res/acc switch on the steering wheel. The car continued to accelerate trough 45 mph and at 58 mph I disconnected the speed control using the brake pedal. This is the third or fourth incident of this type and has been previously reported to his office and Honda customer service.

7 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2013 Honda Insight

Failure Date: 12/06/2014

Driving on a busy s. E. Street in washington DC, driving about 20 to 30 mph. , heard a noise that sounded like a tire blowing out or some other type of noise emanating from underneath the car. I tried to press the brake, but instead the car accelerated and would not stop. It sped up at least another 15 to 20 more mph, and again, would not stop. There were vehicles in the back, so I could not use the emergency brake or shut the car off. There were also vehicles on the side and in front of my vehicle. I had to make a decision on how to slow the car down without hitting any pedestrians or any other vehicles. Decided to try and stop the car by hitting something stationary and ran into a set of steps that belonged to an office building. Airbags deployed and two passersby stopped to assist me and my passenger out of the car. We were both transported by ambulance to a hospital with substantial injuries to the chest, rib, neck and back for myself and the passenger.

8 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2011 Honda Insight

Failure Date: 08/14/2014

This is an update to odi # 10628879, created in Aug. 2014. Insight hybrid is stopped at intersection--auto idle stop. Suddenly engine races wildly, tachometer registers greater than 3,000 r/min. Usually occurs within the first 5 minutes of driving and first 3-5 miles of driving. If I my foot would slip off the brake the car would lurch forward, creating a risk of a collision with the car in front of it. The Honda dealer speculated that the weathertech floor mat under the accelerator might be causing the problem, and an independent repair shop agreed with this hypothesis. I chopped off a large piece of the floor mat from under the accelerator. The problem did not recur for several months, but recently has resumed. So the floor mat is not the cause. Because the racing still occurs unexpectedly from time to time, I am concerned that this is a dangerous condition. But Honda cannot fix it because they can't diagnose it.

9 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2011 Honda Insight

Failure Date: 08/14/2014

Insight hybrid stopped at intersection--auto idle stop. Suddenly engine raced wildly, tachometer registered greater than 3000 r/min. My foot was firmly on brake, and I stopped the racing by shifting out of gear. It felt as if the car might lurch forward from a stop and cause a collision in the intersection. Happened again same day. Dealer said don't operate car in econ mode in city driving, even though that's why I bought a hybrid. Said floor mat might have interfered with accelerator--not true. Dealer not really sure of cause. I will get a second opinion. Do not feel safe until a plausible cause is determined. If the econ mode can cause uncontrolled engine racing then Honda should give customers a warning.

10 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2010 Honda Insight

Failure Date: 10/16/2012

The car was traveling at a very slow speed (<10 mph) in a parking lot with the driver attempting to maneuver the car into a parking space. The driver was applying no pressure on the gas pedal; the car was in deceleration. When the driver stepped on the brake pedal to stop, the engine accelerated and the car lurched forward unexpectedly. As a result, the car went over the parking barrier into the base of a parking light causing significant front end damage to the car ($6,000). The driver has experienced a few other situations where the car acted in a similar manner. We believe this unexpected acceleration issue poses a serious safety hazard. We are working with the local Honda service department to isolate and fix the problem.

11 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2010 Honda Insight

Failure Date: 12/28/2011

Honda Insight hybrid - unpredictable acceleration combined with locking of the brakes caused the car to move forward at an accelerated rate with no control, twice in a short time span. First incident was Dec. 2011, second in Jan. 2012. This did not happen in previous 1 1/2 yrs. I owned the car. I had an accident the first time going very slowly up a hill at 10:am with clear roads. The light was red and I braked to slow down and when crawling, slightly released the brake to roll forward, but the car accelerated 6 feet from a small truck in front of me. I felt like I was being pushed from behind. I pumped but the brakes were locked. Car went forward very slow uphill. I tapped the truck. My damage was a small chip in my plastic plate cover. His fender fell down. We reported the accident and will impact my insurance. I then decided to get snow tires. Second time was in front of a college, in rush hour traffic, slowing down for a red light. There were kids, cars all around etc. , everyone slowing down, coming to a stop. There was snow and ice on the road. I had new snow tires, I brake, the car slowed down, I released the brake a little, instead of maintaining the slower speed, the car accelerated. I brake again quickly, but I was on ice and the brakes locked. I slid as if being pushed. I turned into a small snow bank just in front of the sidewalk and the car stopped. I took it to the dealer who checked for 3 wks. They said no problems. Suggested the floor mats? several other 2010 Insight owners had similar problems all who said the dealership could find nothing wrong. If it was the floor mats it would have been happening all the time! I asked the dealership to buy the Insight back from me. I took a $10,000. Loss. I am so relieved it's worth it. Note: I'm in canada so I had to put your address in order for my complaint to go through. All car problems in na sb together.

12 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2010 Honda Insight

Failure Date: 12/28/2011

In January 2012, my car the 2010 Insight, "unpredictably accelerated, then at the same time, the brakes locked". This caused the car to move forward at an accelerated rate with no driver control. It happened twice in a short time span but did not happen in the previous 1 1/2 yrs that I've owned the car. I had an accident the first time. It impacted my insurance. The second time I was lucky. I do not want to risk a third time. I'm an experienced careful driver and these incidents were not normal. I have driven trucks, vans, cars, automatic and standard in every type of canadian weather. This happened twice in the same way causing a loss of control. I was going 1 mile per hour the first time, while slowing down for a light. I felt like someone was pushing me and I went very slowly uphill into the rear end of the vehicle stopped at the red light. The second time again I was slowing down for a light, going 2 miles per hour on a flat surface. I had to go off the road and hit a snow bank to stop. I detailed the incidents and escalated to Honda canada and my dealership. I gave the dealership the car to test. I want to trade it for a civic. They tried to blame the problem on the floor mats which is not logical since the problem did not occur every time I braked. After keeping my car for 2 weeks they replied, completely ignoring the locked brake aspect, and told me they could not find a problem with the acceleration system. So. Their official documented reply ignores the primary problem, deals with the secondary problem and denies there is any problem. I have to persist. I don't want to die or hurt or kill anyone. A recall is warranted. I am reporting the entire matter here, because after they replied saying there is no problem, I searched online where I found other similar complaints. Note: I live in canada. I used your state and zip code as there was no other option.
