The liftgate does not always stay in the up position. It lifts to the top and then drops quickly with no resistance. It seems worse when the outside temperature is colder (below 40-50 degrees f. There was a recall on the gas struts in about 2012. I called vic bailey Honda in spartanburg, SC. Someone in the service department said their records showed that the recall had been completed on the vehicle.

We own a 2009 Honda Odyssey that recently experienced failed gas struts in the hatch. The car was parked & I was loading groceries into it when the rear liftgate came crashing down - I was lucky enough to jump out ofthe way in time or could have been seriously hurt. . There is a recall for the 2009 Odyssey for the exact same failure mode, but only for the motorized hatch. (ours is not motorized). I would like you to look into the possibility of having Honda increase the scope of the recall to include non-motorized hatches.

Gas struts in rear hatch failed. Hatch came down quickly and without warning. Injury was minor abrasion to index finger that did not require medical attention. Believed to be related to Honda recall #s22, NHTSA campaign #12v062000. Inquired about recall campaign to local Honda dealer. Honda dealer responded that the campaign does not cover the model in question. Campaign should be expanded.

Tl-the contact owns a 2009 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated the rear liftgate would not remain in a secured upward position whenever accessing and closed abruptly. There was a recall under NHTSA campaign id number 12v062000 (structure:body:hatchback/liftgate:support device ); however the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was notified of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 21,000. Js.

Failure Date: 04/19/2012

The contact owns a 2009 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that the rear lift gate failed to remain open because the gas filled struts failed. An authorized dealer was notified and stated that the vehicle was not included in the recall associated with NHTSA campaign id number 12v062000 (structure: body: hatchback/liftgate: support device). The manufacturer was notified and also stated that the vehicle was not included in the recall. They offered no other assistance. The failure mileage was 30,000.

6 Hatchback/liftgate Support Device problem

Failure Date: 11/24/2011

First occurrence happen on 11/24/2011, when I open the gate to get luggage, the automatic liftgate opened all the way up, bounce couple of times and started to close. If I tried to open the gate manually, it would pull and tried to close. I pulled the fuse to try to reset the liftgate to no avail.

My wife tried to open the (powered) liftgate via the handle. The liftgate would not open this way. When she tried the remote, it opened it apx 90 percent of the way. When it reached the apx 90 percent mark, it seemed that the motor opening it jammed and the gate came down quite quickly, falling unexpectedly on my wife's back. I researched this problem and saw that there is an open investigation on this same matter (NHTSA campaign id number: pe11034).

The contact owns a 2009 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that the rear door liftgate failed. The liftgate would only open half way and the contact had to hold the liftgate up manually for the gate to fully open. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer to be diagnosed. The contact owns a 2009 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated the vehicle was parked when she lifted the rear lift gate and it fell, striking her on the top of her head, neck and shoulders. She attempted to hold the lift gate in place but it continued to fail. The dealer was unable to duplicate the failure. In addition, all four power windows would independently open. The dealer was also unable to duplicate the failure of the windows. The manufacturer was contacted and advised that an investigator would further examine the vehicle for the cause of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 23,000 and the current mileage was 23,320.
