The auto-stop/start feature in this vehicle, when activated, causes the engine to stall when starting back up. We have had the battery and starter both replaced, and it is still causing an issue. Now, even with the system deactivated, the vehicle will stall, most likely based on the increased wear on the starter. We have noticed that during initial startup, we have to press the ignition button several times before the vehicle actually starts, and often, when it does start, it struggles to start right away.
2024 Honda Odyssey ex-l fails to restart after stop.
Multiple times since new the van has failed to restart when the auto start/stop has activated. This leaves me in an intersection with a non running car that I need to figure out the right combination of buttons to get it started again. Today it escalated and refused to restart until I shut off the ignition, open the door, closed the door, and then started it. Honda will not do anything if they can not duplicate it. So I am left with a car that is getting more unsafe to drive.
My 2024 Honda Odyssey repeatedly failed to restart after the automatic idle stop system engaged at traffic lights. On numerous occasions, the engine shut off normally but would not restart when I attempted to resume driving. I had to shift into park and manually restart the engine before continuing. This happened regularly and created a safety concern because I could become stranded in traffic with my children in the vehicle. I eventually began manually disabling the automatic idle stop feature every time I drove because I was afraid the vehicle would fail to restart. I reported the issue verbally to a Honda dealership employee during a previous service visit and was advised to disable the automatic idle stop feature rather than continue using it. In October 2026, at approximately 21,000 miles, the vehicle displayed a low battery warning. Several days later, it completely failed to start after stopping at a gas station. Three separate jump-start attempts were unsuccessful. The dashboard lights and audio system worked, but the power windows stopped functioning. An authorized Honda dealership diagnosed a completely failed starter. The service advisor stated that the starter failure had also drained the battery. Both components were replaced under the factory warranty. The dealership stated that these repairs should resolve the previous idle stop failures, but the underlying cause of the premature starter failure has not been explained, and I do not yet know whether the problem is fully resolved. I am concerned about the repeated failures to restart in traffic and the complete starter failure at only 21,000 miles. I would like this investigated as a potential vehicle safety defect. I do not know whether the dealership retained the failed components for inspection.
Sometimes when the car turns off for the auto stop function at something like a stop light or stop sign it stalls when trying to restart. This requires a whole restart with getting back into park and getting the van to start again. It seems to happen most often when the air conditioning is on but not on full blast. I brought it to the dealer once and they couldn’t reproduce the issue or find something wrong. It has happened since that appointment and I am bringing it back. Some lights show up on the dash but I don’t remember which ones as I’m trying to frantically start the van again because I’m typically stalled at a stop light.
I purchased a used 2024 Honda Odyssey in September 2026 with approximately 12,000 miles. The vehicle intermittently experiences delayed starting and extended cranking when attempting to start the engine. Carmax was aware of the starting concern at the time of purchase. After purchase, carmax replaced the battery, but the problem persisted. The vehicle was subsequently kept for approximately eight days for further diagnosis, and I was informed that technicians could not reproduce or identify the issue. I am concerned that the intermittent starting problem could worsen and potentially leave my family stranded. I am requesting that NHTSA review this complaint for a possible vehicle safety defect.
I am submitting this complaint regarding a serious safety issue with my Honda's auto idle stop/start system. On multiple occasions, while stopped in traffic or at an intersection, the auto idle stop system has automatically shut off the engine as designed. However, when I release the brake and attempt to proceed, the engine fails to restart. The vehicle becomes stalled and immobilized in the middle of active traffic. I have been stuck at traffic intersections because of this failure, creating a significant safety concern. When the vehicle fails to restart, surrounding traffic expects the vehicle to move when the light changes, while I am unable to accelerate or safely clear the intersection. This creates a risk of a collision, particularly from vehicles approaching from behind.
The vehicle's auto idle stop (ais) system failed to restart the engine after engaging at a complete stop. The affected components are the engine, starter motor, and ais control software. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request. On xxx, at approximately 7:43 pm, the ais system engaged while I was stopped at the intersection of [xxx]. Upon releasing the brake pedal, the engine failed to restart. The vehicle became fully immobilized in an active left-turn lane with traffic behind me. I was required to shift to park and manually depress the start button multiple times to restore power. Multiple vehicles behind me began sounding their horns. A minor child was a passenger in the vehicle. This is not an isolated incident. The vehicle has been presented to howdy Honda, in austin, texas, for the same defect on three to four prior occasions. On the most recent prior visit, the dealer replaced the starter motor — the specific remedy prescribed by Honda technical service bulletins 23-008 and 23-009. The vehicle was returned to me as repaired. The failure recurred the same day. The defect has been confirmed and repair attempted by the authorized Honda dealership. The manufacturer has been on notice of this defect class-wide since at least 2018. Prior to and during failure events, the instrument cluster displays a red exclamation mark warning light and/or a "brake system" warning light. These warnings first appeared in conjunction with the initial ais failure events and recur with each subsequent incident. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
The vehicle came to a complete stop at a stoplight at a busy intersection and the auto idle stop feature engaged. When the brake was released to resume driving, the engine struggled to restart, and then stalled completely in the middle of traffic. The vehicle did not automatically restart upon releasing the brake, and had to be placed into park, turned off completely, and then restarted manually to regain vehicle control. This has happened several times. There have also been instances where the vehicle did not stall completely, but bucked violently when the auto idle stop feature restarted the vehicle.
My 2024 Honda Odyssey has repeatedly failed to restart after the auto idle stop system shuts the engine off while stopped at a red light or in traffic. Normally, the engine should automatically restart when I release the brake, but on several occasions the vehicle completely shut down and I had to manually restart it. During one incident, the vehicle would not restart for approximately 1–2 minutes despite repeated attempts. This left the vehicle disabled in traffic and created a serious safety concern. The problem has occurred multiple times.
The vehicle suffered an auto idle stop failure at a red light. The engine shut down normally, but failed to automatically restart when the brake was released. There were no dashboard warning lights, and I was forced to manually shift the vehicle into park to restart the engine in active traffic.
Georgia.
I was stopped at a stoplight. The car has idle stop so the engine turns off at the light. When I tried to go the car went into park. I could not get it back in drive and had to turn the car off then back on. Meanwhile I am stuck in the middle of the road with traffic. This has happened several times before.
Yesterday (8/21/2026) my husband took this vehicle in for a routine oil change and upon the 100 point inspection was informed there was an oil leak somewhere from the engine. This vehicle is barely 2 years old and barely at 30,000 miles. There were 0 signs of a leak somewhere we had no idea. They completed diagnostics and determined it was the axle seal. Thankfully this was covered under warranty but their master mechanic shared with my husband that this is a very well known issue with the 2024 models and the fix is using the newer manufacturing parts. Again, there were no visible signs of a leak, there were no vehicle computer warnings of an issue other than the oil life alerts that are programmed.
The van has trouble restarting. This can appear as both a sluggish restart and a complete failure to restart. The van has failed to restart both during quick stops like refueling and during the auto-stop feature at a stop light. When this happens, the driver must completely shut off the van and restart, which is a safety issue when stuck while blocking traffic. The van is having the starter replaced for a second time after the dealer determined the starter was failing. The starter was replaced in 2025 under warranty because the dealer determined the starter was failing. There are no warning lamps, but the starting does start to slow down over time. We missed the slow down the first time until it failed to restart because the onset is gradual. We only noticed the second time because we'd already encountered the issue. The two dealerships we've taken the van to for this issue were both hesitant to do the work, claiming trouble recreating the issue.
2024 Odyssey engine shut off while in drive thru at restaurant. Unshure if auto start stop override was active. Either way the van had to be re started using the start button. Van re started on second or third attempt to re start with start button. This is a repeat occurance since having starter replaced in response to a similar problem about a year ago.
Car purchased July 4, 2024. Idle stop/start was working but after several months, it became defective. After driving for some time, idle stop/start wouldn't work properly and cut the engine off when idling. I would have to turn the car, open my door, and try to restart the car. It also occurs after parking, turning off the car and less than 10-15min attempt to restart. Most of the time, it'll start after 1 or 2 attempts. Except today 07/31/2026, I got home and parked. After 20min, I tried to start my car and after 10-15 attempts, it wouldn't start. After waiting 2 hours, the car finally started.
The idle start stop system on my 2024 Honda Odyssey sometimes works, and then other times will leave me stranded at a stoplight, making it a grave safety concern. After the engine does not restart you have to turn the car completely off put it in park turn it all the way back on and then continue driving. This is not related to any of the climate controls being onto high or energy being consumed. It seems to be a manufacturing defect.
Completely shuts off during an idle stop at a traffic light.
My 2024 Honda Odyssey has repeatedly failed to restart after the auto idle stop system shuts the engine off at a red light. When I release the brake or press the accelerator, the engine does not restart as it should. The vehicle then shifts into park or instructs me to place it in park, and it is difficult to restart using the start button. This has left the vehicle disabled in an active traffic lane and creates a serious risk of being struck by another vehicle. I have been stuck at a red light with people honking at me and haven't been able to start the car for up to a minute. The problem is intermittent, and I do not know whether it is caused by the engine, electrical system, battery, starter, software, or power train. The auto idle stop system should not shut the engine off if the vehicle may be unable to restart.
Automatic start stop completely turns off car when pulling up to a stop sign, light, or yield intersection. Car completely turned off and wouldn’t start on a bridge overpass causing a safety hazard. Took a solid minute for it to restart.
While driving in normal traffic, when I come to a complete stop and keep my foot on the brake, the auto idle stop system activates as designed. However, when I release the brake to continue driving, the engine intermittently fails to restart properly. Instead, it repeatedly attempts to restart, cycling on and off several times before shutting down completely. When this occurs, the vehicle becomes disabled in traffic and does not respond as expected. It can take multiple attempts and a significant amount of time before the engine finally restarts, leaving me stranded in intersections or in moving traffic. This creates a serious safety hazard because surrounding vehicles continue moving while my vehicle is unable to move. This problem has occurred multiple times under normal driving conditions and is not an isolated incident. During one occurrence, the vehicle failed to restart after the auto idle stop system activated, leaving my vehicle disabled in traffic. As a result of this incident, my vehicle was involved in a collision that **damaged the front and back bumper**. Fortunately, no one was seriously injured, but the incident clearly demonstrates the significant safety risk associated with this defect. The vehicle is currently at an authorized Honda dealership for diagnosis and repair. I am submitting this complaint because a vehicle that unexpectedly shuts down and fails to restart after auto idle stop activation presents a serious safety hazard. I am concerned that this defect could lead to additional crashes, property damage, or serious injuries if it is not corrected.
Several times the vehicle has turned off due to the auto on/off and did not restart. No warning. This happened two times at intersection near school with multiple children in the vehicle. Vehicle was not able to restart immediately. Changed to a new agm battery and still does not work. Trouble starting. Slow starting and combined with auto on off this is a dangerous disaster of vehicle.
4 months after purchasing, vehicle had warped rotors. Vehicle has stalled in traffic 4 times completely shutting off while in drive. Seeping radiator. And violation shaking when breaking.
My 2024 Honda Odyssey ex-l has a recurring auto idle stop failure. About 1–2 times per week, when stopped at a light and auto idle stop engages, the engine fails to restart properly when I release the brake. The engine sputters or shuts down, the battery warning light comes on, and the vehicle shifts itself into park. I then have to hold the start button for several seconds to restart the engine. This creates a safety risk because the vehicle becomes disabled in active traffic when the light turns green. The vehicle was previously taken to a Honda dealer for this issue, and the battery was replaced, but the problem continues.
2024 Odyssey sport VIN [xxx] in the drive through lane at a reataurant activated the auto start stop feature and shut off the van. The van did not restart when trying to move foreward again and had to cycle the starting ignition system via placing van in park and pressing the start button. Taking the van to the hennesey Honda dealer in woodstock GA for inspection. Thank you [xxx] [xxx] [xxx] or [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. See attached document for complaint.
Several times, I have been driving, and the auto stop shuts the engine down, then it will not restart. This has happened on a very busy state route in the middle of an intersection, while I have my young children in the vehicle. This is very concerning and a mojor safety issue for us.
The vehicle was stopped at a red light. This vehicle is equipped with an auto-start/stop system to save fuel. Once the red light turned green the engine refused to restart. This was the second instance. The vehicle took over 30 seconds before it would restart. None of the push-to-start buttons worked, the car would not recognize that the brake was pressed, and it had also shifted itself into park. Very dangerous while traffic was moving all around us.
The contact owns a 2024 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that while stopped and using the auto start/stop feature, the vehicle failed to restart as designed. While attempting to restart the vehicle, the battery warning light flashed on the instrument panel. The vehicle restarted after several minutes. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 41,000.
Car doesn't start, has needed to be jumped almost 20 times in a year. Auto start stop has shut the car off in intersections.
The auto idle stop (ais) feature on our 2024 Honda Odyssey ex-l has recently failed to restart engine leaving driver and passengers stranded in heavy traffic at intersection traffic lights. This has occurred twice, once while traveling alone, once while traveling with five year old child. Safety put at risk because driver had to exit car in middle of road during rush hour traffic while cars attempted to go around. The problem has not been reproduced or confirmed by dealer. Had battery tested at auto parts store and results indicate battery in good condition. Vehicle has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives. There were not any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure.
My minivan has had repeated electrical and safety-related failures since shortly after it was leased. The vehicle has died or failed to start five times, including multiple tow events. The first battery failure happened shortly after delivery, but we thought a light may have been left on and did not know to bring it in. The problem continued. The dealer has replaced the battery, recharged the battery, replaced the alternator, and later found an excessive parasitic draw, but the electrical problems have continued. The failures affect more than starting. The sliding doors have failed 30+ times by refusing to close and acting like something is blocking them when nothing is there. This creates a safety concern because passengers may not be able to safely enter, exit, or secure the vehicle. The instrument cluster has gone black on startup in park about 10 times and has also blacked out or faulted while in use. A brake failure warning light appeared once. The backup camera intermittently dims so badly that I cannot see behind the vehicle while reversing. A service advisor observed this issue, but the technician could not reproduce it during inspection. The dvd/interior electronics, usb charging, and wireless phone charger have also failed. The power tailgate/trunk malfunctioned repeatedly before repair, including problems opening or closing and clicking. The front driver and passenger windows also do not roll down smoothly. The front window still shakes or drags even after two repair attempts. The vehicle has been inspected by authorized service centers and is available for inspection upon request. The exact root cause is unknown, but based on the repeated dead battery, charging, parasitic draw, door, display, camera, brake warning, interior electronics, and power window failures, the pattern appears consistent with an unresolved electrical or charging-system defect.
While operating the vehicle, I have experienced repeated problems with the idle stop/start system. Specifically: 1-the engine automatically shuts off at stop signs and stop lights as designed, but at times the vehicle fails to restart immediately when the brake is released or the acceleration is pressed. 2-multiple occasion while stopped in traffic the vehicle unexpectantly shifted into "park. " 3-for the last 3 weeks the vehicle sometimes hesitates to start on first attempt.
I have had multiple issues with the radio (16000 miles). After many personal videos dealership was able to fix one of this issues with a new part (22000 miles). I was informed the other issues I was having with the radio was due to my battery not staying fully charged. I was also having issues with the van not starting right away, which made me feel I could get stranded. It took many attempts to get the van to start. The van also wouldn't let me reverse one time, with a message telling me to place van in park. Another issue is the van is very slow to restart from auto idle shut off. The transmission is slow to change gears in lower gears and the van jerks a little bit. Next my rotors were warped. I was informed by the dealership that there was nothing wrong with my transmission and the auto idle down was working properly. No one could explain the rotors being warped. They reshaped my rotors and replaced the battery and told me they hoped that fixed the problem. Well indeed it did not fix the problem. As of 12/27/25 the van completely shut off at a stop sign and again on 12/28/25. The issue is only getting worse (24,000 miles) and now I am scared to death that the van will stop while I am driving. The dealership has been contacted and I am waiting on a call back for a loaner car. I was in traffic and was extremely worried about my safety, as well, the safety of others around me and with me. ( side note I returned the van to another dealership soon after the first dealership performed work on the van, when I heard a metal on metal sound and what sounded like a bolt rolling around in my back brakes. They did not find anything wrong but were also puzzled by the rotors already being warped. I was afraid to make the trip to the orig dealership). I have recently gotten a video of the brakes scraping again. This van is causing a lot of safety issues for my family.
