1 Starter problem

Failure Date: 06/27/2020

I was driving on a dual two lane highway at 55 mph. At a cross road a traffic light was red, and I stopped the vehicle. The automatic idle stop shut off the engine for 1/2 to 1 minute, before the traffic light turned green. When I took my foot off the break, the car should have started, but it didn't. . Many of the dashboard lights came on, the car shifted into neutral. The cars around me moved forward and several honked, because I wasn't moving. Other cars were approach me from behind at speed. I tried to turn the ignition off and restart it. Nothing happened because the shift was in neutral. I exited the car and pushed it to the right turn lane just ahead and pushed the brake to stop once I was out of the driving lane. I put the car in park with my foot on the brake and tried to start the engine 2 or 3 times before the starter turned the engine over. Several cars went by at speed, and luckily no one wanted to turn right. The car is just over 5 years old and I am very familiar with its operation with the automatic idle stop feature, but this time it surprised me. I had replaced the battery after 2. 5 years of driving, and it is only 1 year and 10 months since it was replaced. I have read anecdotal accounts of similar incidences by other 2016 Pilot owners who had no reason for the incident. The car did not have any further problems that day, because I cancelled the idle stop feature for the trip home. I feel I could easily have become a statistic along with my wife had the traffic been moderately greater that evening. Other have registered complaints about this problem on this website. I am having the battery replace tomorrow, even though the dealer hasn't yet evaluated its condition.

2 Starter problem

Failure Date: 06/07/2020

The following error code appeared several days ago; keyless start system problem. Honda informed me that the push button starter required replacement. I installed the new unit as instructed, and the error message went away. Today (two days later) the error message re-appeared. I have since noticed that there are many problems reported online by Honda vehicle owners about this issue.

3 Starter problem

Failure Date: 12/17/2019

"keyless starter system problem" light comes and goes. Mileage 50k - have changed key fob battery, issue still randomly displays - seems to be more often now. Find that if I try to not rush the turn off process it will sometimes help - ie put car in park - wait a few seconds, then shut off vehicle - doesn't always prevent message - quite unnerving wondering when I wont be able to start the vehicle - this has been going on for last 10k miles.

4 Starter problem

Failure Date: 08/08/2019

Our Honda Pilot shuts down while being operated, typically while attempting to resume driving after having been stopped at intersections, making turns, red lights, etc. All electrical components become unresponsive, including starter, shift controller, hazard lights, etc. Typically takes to 5 minutes to restart, leaving us stranded in traffic; an incredibly dangerous situation. This has occurred (5 times so far) with the "auto engine idle stop" engaged and is suspect. 1st attempt by dealer to diagnose & repair involved replacing the battery despite testing "good". Shutdowns continued; the last occurred in a 5-lane highway with my wife and 3-year old child on board. 2nd attempt to diagnose & repair, took 4 weeks and a suggested repair of replacing the battery (previous battery less than a year old) and a new starter @ $1,600; even though the technician stated both were "good". Conversations with the dealership/technicians acknowledge the suspected problem electrical/computer based but the on-board computer does not record these events. The dealership/technicians state they reported and researched this issue via their in-house tech site but we were told this issue is unknown and isolated to our car. Our solution being a mutually acknowledge, unnecessary repair. I debated their $1,600 "solution" and questioned warranty coverage and was informed if not done, would be recorded as "customer refuses repair". When I asked if the $1,600 would be refunded when the issue resumed (since well agreed the suggested repair was not the solution), I was informed "no". We have not done the repair. A simple internet search shows this is not an isolated problem as we were told and is even recorded here on the NHTSA website numerous times, verbatim to our experience.

5 Starter problem

Failure Date: 10/27/2018

Keyless starter system error message and it no longer auto locks.

6 Starter problem

Failure Date: 01/06/2018

The keyless start system appears to be faulty. The vehicle has begun to intermittently, but increasingly, show a keyless start error that prevents the vehicle from being started with the starter button. Multiple attempts are sometimes necessary to get the vehicle to start. A critical system such as this should not fail in this fashion, completely disabling the vehicle, given its current mileage of 44,610.

7 Starter problem

Failure Date: 04/01/2016

The contact owns a 2015 Honda Pilot. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle was stalling and losing motive power. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer, where it was diagnosed that the starter needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired under an extended warranty; however, the contact stated that the failure recurred, and that the vehicle was stalling. The contact also stated that while driving through an intersection, the vehicle stalled, and the gear independently shifted into neutral(n) and the vehicle lost motive power. The contact stated that she shifted into park(p) and was then able to restart the vehicle. Additionally, the contact stated that while attempting to start the vehicle, the vehicle failed to start with the power steering, oil, and battery warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was towed to steve hopkins Honda (2499 auto mall pkwy, fairfield, CA 94533), where it was diagnosed that the starter needed to be replaced again. The vehicle remained at the dealer awaiting the repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.
