Five problems related to adaptive cruise control have been reported for the 2017 Honda Pilot. The most recently reported issues are listed below. Please also check out the statistics and reliability analysis of the 2017 Honda Pilot based on all problems reported for the 2017 Pilot.

1 Adaptive Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 03/06/2026

Collision mitigation braking system camera failure indictions appeared in the dashboard control center. I took the vehicle to the Honda dealership who stated there is not an active recall and that this was not a covered expense. Out of caution because I have read of the system failues causing brake lock-up related to over 40 vehicular crashes and almost twice that number of injuries, I decided to immediately obtain this $2,000 repair. I contact Honda of America to start a claim for a goodwill reimbursement and they told me only (and repeatedly) that the vehicle was too old, out of warranty and that they would not consider reimbursement of the repair to this integrated and vital safety system. The national highway traffic safety administration (NHTSA) has documented 2,976 complaints involving unintended automatic braking in Honda vehicles, with 47 crashes and 93 injuries reported. These issues involve Honda vehicles equipped with camera-based collision mitigation braking systems similar to the one used in the 2017 Pilot. Because this failure involves a core safety system component, and because there -documented evidence of system-wide safety investigations -thousands of consumer complaints -shared safety technology across the Honda lineup I requested reimbursement from Honda America. They made zero effort to acknowledge this safety system fault and clearly stated they would not reimburse me nor would the customer service representative provide me with any guidance on how to further pursue the matter. Nhtsa complaints involving the 2017 Honda Pilot reference failures involving the collision mitigation braking system, lane keeping assist system, and adaptive cruise control warnings, all systems dependent on the same forward-facing camera architecture. Front multipurpose camera replacement was the final repair needed and not reimbursed.

3 Adaptive Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 07/30/2024

The front facing camera was working intermittently. When it wasn’t working all the advanced driving features would not work. After several months the car would intermittently go into limp mode per the dealership due to electrical confusion with all the codes/lights from the camera malfunction and shift while driving into neutral nearly causing me to have an accident while making a left hand turn. The camera had to be replaced at a large cost and they said it was not able to be repaired despite the fact that it worked perfectly 10% of engine starts.

4 Adaptive Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 05/14/2022

Turned on the car back in may '22 and all my lights came on my dashboard for acc, collision, lane departure, lane keeping assistant, brake assistance. I have taken it to two dealers and the problem seems to be the multi-function camera in the windshield has failed. Said it is safe to drive still without it, but now the cruise control isn't even available with this malfunction. Two months later my transmission problem light comes on. I take it in again and they say the multi-function camera being broken is triggering this warning light to come on. So I don't know if my transmission actually has a problem or if the multi function camera is breaking everything electrical in my car. Transmission drives funny but I can't prove anything because of the camera. If the car has been in the sun for a period of time the lights will not show up and you can use cruise control again. Camera is on backorder so don't know when it will come in, and don't even know if this will fix the whole problem.

5 Adaptive Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 12/17/2021

Traveling about 70 mph on the interstate using cruise control. I don’t think there was a change in steepness/grade, but if there was it was mild. Suddenly, the rpm’s were erratic and the engine and gears seemed out of sync. Pressing the gas pedal didn’t seem to effectively accelerate the vehicle. I don’t believe the brakes were affected. The “d” for drive indicator kept blinking on and off. Multiple warning lights on the dash display: transmission system problem, all wheel drive problem, and interestingly, blind spot monitor problem. The last indicator to show was emissions system problem, and this indicator remained on the screen. I exited the interstate. Shifted to reverse, then parked the car and turned engine off. After a few moments, I restarted the engine and the only anomaly I observed was the warning indicator light on the dash read: emissions system problem. There was roughly 1/4 to 1/2 tank of gasoline remaining at the time of incidence. I continued to drive approximately 350 miles more to my destination, without using cruise control and without further or other issues. I made a couple stops to add gas and both times the engine was turned off then back on again without issue. The following day, after restarting the engine, the “emissions system problem” warning indicator light was no longer showing on the display. I have yet to encounter the problem thus far, but I haven’t used the cruise control since nor have I driven at interstate speeds for any considerable length of time. I haven’t yet taken the vehicle to the dealer for inspection. But will do so.
