My engine started to have a clicking or a ticking sound, and then abruptly stop running. The dealer said that the engine is seized up. From what I have read, it sounds like the connecting rod problem that other 2017 models have had. I think that my engine needs to also be on the recall. Honda has offered no help with this, what-so-ever, even though I think they know there is a manufacturing defect.

I started getting a p0306 code on my truck on Thursday Jan 2, 2025. I took it to my mechanic and he said that it is a lower engine problem. On Saturday Jan 11,2025 there was a loud clunk from the engine and the vehicle lost power. My mechanic said that the connector rod broke. I contacted Honda but they said my VIN is not in the recall and I would have to deal with the dealership. I know that they won't do anything so I am in the process of trying to install a used engine myself.
Checked oil display at 40% on 04jan2025, had to put in 2. 5 qts 0-40 viscosity engine oil to get between bottom and top level markers on the oil dipstick. On 08an2025 at approx 4:35am, on the way home, heard engine noise (like 2-spoons tapping together) and within 1-minute the engine died and will not start, just a click. Had the vehicle towed to my residence (approx . 5 mile) and parked for 3-weeks to check if battery, bad gas, and/or transmission neutral safety is/are the issue(s). Finally got the vehicle towed to a local shop on 29jan2025. Called local shop on 31jan2025 and informed that there is no oil in the engine, and recommended to replace the engine. Note: oil/filter changed on may2024, and have purchased oil/filter on 07jan2025 to change oil as soon as the oil displays 30%.

After significant time (hours) at highway speeds with 90% cruise control use, the car, when stopped at exit intersection, goes to fractional power with the engine light flashing. The car can still move haltingly at approximately 5 mph. Once safety stopped and shut-off, car will restart without any check engine light and will function normally. This has happened on multiple occasions, in both hot and cold weather. When mentioned to the dealer 2 years ago, said they had never heard of the problem. Internet forums show mine is not an isolated instance. When the car fails, it is in an intersection, where cars coming from all sides are not expecting a car to limp through at 5mph. This is a safety to issue to anyone on the road at the time.
After performing regular maintenance to Honda Ridgeline 2018 by replacing the spark plugs, spark plug number 4 was contaminated with oil. All other 5 spark plugs had not sign of oil. This was discovered during the 100k miles tune up. A leaking component (e. G. A tube seal) in the well or an engine-related issue that's causing oil to enter the combustion chamber can cause a critical engine failure.

Vehicle goes into limp mode, limited power, flashing check engine light this happens after extended period on highway (hour or more) below 20 degrees f. When you exit highway and come to a stop. All good as soon as you try to accelerate cel starts flashing and I have reduced power. To correct this. The vehicle has to be shut off and restarted. This means it happens when pulling out into traffic from a stand still at a stop light stop sign. Limited to about 15 mph regardless of road pulling onto. Then have to pull over shut off and restart put back in drive and go. This is not ideal in most cases and dangerous. Honda released a TSB but will not cover if out of warranty. I filed case with Honda at 70 k. They agreed to pay for parts and labor minus $50 deductible and sales tax on parts. This affect all 2017 to 2023 and some 2024 vehicles with 3. 5l engine. This first happened to me with roughly 2k miles on car and is sporadic. Only cold weather and matches their TSB. Happens frequently every winter for me. For last 3 years when I found Honda TSB 24-085 suddenly the dealer knew this was happening. Yet I have been complaining for 3 years of issue. Once I showed them TSB suddenly OH that’s what you mean.

Crankshaft leading to rod bearing failure causing engine failure. Same issuse as 2017 and 2019 models that had recall 23v-751 issued.
The contact owns a 2022 Honda Ridgeline. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the engine was abnormally loud before the vehicle lost motive power. The contact stated that the sound was extremely loud, like the rod bearings were banging together. Additionally, several unknown warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was driven to the shoulder of the road. The vehicle was then towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed with engine failure. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was filed. The failure mileage was approximately 50,150.
Connecting rod bearing on the #6 cylinder. . . After the injectors failed and the vehicle was barely drivable the Honda mechanic heard a knocking in the motor which was confirmed when I agreed to pay $700 for them to tear it down to look. Mechanic confirmed issue which is exactly same issue as the recall for other 2017 Ridgelines. I am somewhat lucky as I had purchased an extended warranty but it will still cost me over $700 to get a used motor. The insurance company confirmed issue. There were no warning lights or anything that came on prior to the injectors failing. Could have been a major issue as mechanic said it was just a matter of time before motor completely blew up.
I have had an engine knocking noise at startup but now is continuous/constant. Diagnosed at my local Honda dealer as a connecting rod failure of my well maintained 2020 Honda Ridgeline. Recommended repair, short block replacement or engine replacement with a used engine. My 2020 Honda Ridgeline is not part of the safety recall for the connecting rod bearing recall and should be. I have read numerous stories of owners with Honda Ridgelines and pilots that are outside the recall years with this failure.
2022 Ridgeline's auto idle engine off/on activated while driving/moving. This week it occurred (Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2024) on i95 in virginia when going down hill at approximately 70 mph. The engine ceased without warning and the steering and brake pedal began to freeze up when I had eased off the gas to coast briefly down hill (in order to keep in the flow of traffic). I then gave it gas, pumping the pedal, and a couple of seconds later it recovered and started up; the truck’s starter buzzed loudly as it restarted. I avoided an accident in traffic by not panicking and luckily because the vehicle behind us was not tailgating and that the section of highway was straight and not on a bend - otherwise it could have been catastrophic. The rest of the trip we turned the feature off and the truck had no incidents. Based on the few previous events, which were at slower speeds, it seems that if the truck coasts even briefly the feature can trigger as if the sensor "senses" that the truck is not moving - and the engine turns off (previously it felt like the truck was stalling). I previously mentioned the incidents to the dealer service techs but there is no awareness or acknowledgement of the issue. This week I placed another call to the dealer and left a detailed message - but nobody at the dealer has acknowledged this is an issue.
I have a 2021 Honda Ridgeline. It had a 3. 5 liter v-6 with a 9 speed transmission. I was driving from cincinnati to cleveland on [xxx] Sunday [xxx]. It was about 25 degrees fahrenheit outside and partly cloudy. After driving about 3 1/2 hours I exited the [xxx] and turned on to [xxx]. The on- ramp is a sharp right turn so you have to slow to around 25 mph or slower. When I gave my Honda gas to speed up to merge onto [xxx], the vehicle started shaking and the check engine light began to blink and the truck was almost unresponsive and went into "limp" mode only using 2 or 3 cylinders and roughly shaking as I tried to accelerate. I pulled off to the side of the shoulder on the interstate, put my hazard lights on and drove to a nearby Honda dealer (about 3 miles away). It was a Sunday so the service department was not open. My family and I got a ride home and I began researching this issue in on-line forums and other Honda on-line threads. What I saw was a lot of people are having this exact problem with their Honda v6 vehicles. Story after story I read of this same situation that had just happened to me. 1. Long drives of 1 hour or longer 2. Highway speeds 60-80 mph 3. Cold weather usually below 32 degrees f 4. Slowing down off the highway then making a turn 5. Accelerating after turn then the vehicle goes into "limp" mode shaking, check engine light blinking, and vehicle is unresponsive or very weak some of the owners were in canada and some in united states but they all had the same situation that I had. In the Honda Ridgeline forums they took it to their dealers and most of the dealers said it was bad gas so when I called my dealer the next morning and that is what they said I was very skeptical and told about what I had read on-line, that this was a common problem and they said there was nothing they or Honda could do about it. The end result was a $1,700 bill. (I have a copy) please look into this. Thanks. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

Unknown, engine bearings.
The contact owns a 2021 Honda Ridgeline. The contact stated that while driving approximately 30 mph, there was a knocking sound coming from the engine compartment while accelerating and there was a loud popping sound coming from the engine compartment shortly afterwards. The low oil level warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was towed to firestone and was diagnosed with engine failure. The vehicle had not been repaired by firestone but was instead towed to the dealer. The vehicle was diagnosed, and the contact was informed that the connecting rods had disconnected, causing engine failure. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The dealer informed the contact that the repair was not covered under warranty due to the low oil levels. The contact confirmed that the low oil level warning light occurred during the failure. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and opened a case regarding the failure. The failure mileage was 52,000.
Excessive wear on connecting rod or crankshaft bearings. While performing a pre-road trip oil change after only 1600 miles, I found a large amount of copper glitter metal particles in the engine oil. I have oil samples and the oil filter available for inspection. And I have pictures. If the bearings seize the engine will stop running possibly causing an accident. I had put just 15 miles on the fresh oil while driving it to the Honda dealer. They drained the fresh oil and said they did not find metal - not surprising because I had just changed it. They said the connecting rods weren't knocking and to drive it another 5000 miles then bring it back. I hear some faint knocking when the engine is cold that goes away as the engine gets warm.
Have taken in a few times for engine knocking, Honda has down oil changes and reported noise is normal but is getting louder, purchased extended warranty from Honda dealer. Also had at Honda for oil and filter change a month ago, they also were supposed to have completed the tailgate harness but told me it had be previously complied with but never took it off the list of open recalls. Honda isn’t the company it used to be. After my purchase of my new Honda pilot and issues- it will be my last Honda period.
Was extended warranty for my make model and year for faulty fuel injectors. Exact same codes on the bulletin but wasn't covered due to VIN specific.
Engine push rod on recall lists.
The drive train / transmission has always had a "pause" then a "clunk" before shifting into or from reverse gear, its worse now. The engine is starting to make noises and im afraid its part of the engine recall of 2017 and it may fail and injury me while driving. I take excellent care of my truck and its only adult driven by me, hence the concern.
Vehicle is currently at curry Honda in yorktown NY awaiting an engine repair. The vehicle developed a rod knock consistent with nhsta campaign number 23v751000, engine damage from connecting rod bearing wear. Metal shavings were in both the engine oil and oil filter as confirmed by technicians at curry Honda. Vehicle was driven to the dealership and all mechanical issues were verified by dealership employees.
4 times since I owned the truck it has stalled at traffic lights. The dashboard tells me there is an issue and tells me go in park. Then put my foot on the brake and start it normally. It does not restart. After 20 clicks twice it restarted only after I exited the vehicle, locked the door and reentered the vehicle. One time I was left at the light for an hour waiting for a tow truck. A police office tried to start it, and he put his foot on the gas. Eventually it started. The truck has less than 1,500 miles on it. The dealerships that have seen car did not find an error code so there is nothing they can do at this time. I took a video today when it happened for the 4th time to see if it helps. I saw online a similar problem with the pilot from 2020-2022.

This happened on the interstate. This happens repeatedly (about once per week) for my spouse, but today was the first time for me. I was changing lanes at about 75 mph, and the tachometer dropped to zero despite my further depressing the accelerator. I took my foot off and again depressed the accelerator and the engine reengaged. I have not had the dealer look at this yet. There were no warning lamps or other messages in the driver information.
My car is equipe with a idle stop start assitant and in 3 ocasions did not restar the vehicle after stoping on a red light, I have to put the car in parking and then try to re-start the vehicle triying 1 or 2 time until starts up.
Engine failure on the highway. Vehicle came to a sudden halt almost causing an accident with a semitruck. Mechanic diagnosed as a failed rod bearing.
I had taken the truck to the mechanic no sooner than a month ago who changed the oil and did an inspection of the vehicle performing routine maintenance. Few weeks ago I had been driving when my engine started breaking down, the car would turn on drive for a moment then lose complete power to the wheels forcing myself and a friend to hitchhike home through the pitch dark. When we took the car into the shop they told us the engine was blown and that it’d need a completely new engine, although I had not been driving recklessly (maxing revs, speeding, harsh breaking ext) the reason I bring this up is I saw you were performing an investigation and I would like to include my vehicle into the scope as this problem was simply an instance of shotty build quality.
The contact owns a 2023 Honda Ridgeline. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle stalled. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was restarted; however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed with engine failure. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 20,117.

The contact owns a 2018 Honda Ridgeline. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, several unknown warning lights illuminated on the instrument panel and the vehicle stalled. The vehicle failed to restart. The vehicle was towed to a local dealer where it was diagnosed that the lower connecting rod was causing the rob bearing to fail. After further investigation, the contact related the failure to NHTSA campaign number: 23v751000 (engine and engine cooling). The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 93,000.
I was going home after picking my grandson up from school. Without notice 1heard a thud and my engine stopped. Iwas on the highway proir to an exit and luckily made it to a safe spot. If this happened 500 feet further down the highway. , would have been in construction with no shoulder, very dangerous! ! had my Ridgeline towed to my mechanic, the engine was frozen, |t showed the same symptoms as the crankshaft bearings recall but my VIN was not included in the recall. 1 contacted vandergrift Honda who said they would diagnose the failure. Had it towed to them, but once management got involved, they refused to spend any effort. 1 towed it back to my mechanic. With all the problems with this engine, parts and rebuild engines are hard to find. My mechanic replaced my engine and honde claims no responsibility.
I am writing to bring to your attention a significant issue I have encountered with my 2019 Honda Ridgeline, which recently suffered a catastrophic engine failure from a seized connecting rod bearing, resulting in a blown engine. With virtually no warning, the dash lights illuminated and the engine lost power and started smoking while on the freeway. A 911 was called and police and fire responded. The engine compartment was drenched with water in an effort to prevent a fire. Any delay in emergency services response would have certainly resulted in a fire and possible accident or injury. The vehicle was towed to and is currently at my local Honda dealer who confirmed the cause of the engine failure. I was informed that there was a recall issued for this exact problem for 2017 and 2019 Honda Ridgelines, however my VIN was not included in the recall even though my vehicle experienced the same engine problems. Allstate insurance inspected the vehicle and confirmed the cause of the failure. Additionally, after researching this issue I found that there are numerous 2017 and 2019 Honda Ridgeline owners who have also experienced the same exact issues. I would like to understand why my vehicle was not included in this recall and if there is anything that the NHTSA can do to get it covered. I was told by Honda America that you have the authority to expand the recall. .
Engine suffered internal mechanical failure. I had the failed engine replaced so it is no longer in my position. My wife was driving and was nearly rear-ended on a major highway at around 55mph. Without warning, the truck stalled then completely stopped. She was able to get it running for a short period in order to go down an off ramp. Then it would not restart. I had the truck towed to the dealer and the diagnosing mechanic described it as an internal mechanical failure, most likely a rod bearing failure. The dealership service manager discouraged me for having the engine full diagnosed because of the cost. Failure occurred without warning. Once the truck stalled, all warning lights began to flash.
Driving home from work, my truck began to have a ticking sound from r/h front engine area. I drove the vehicle home. By the time I reached home the ticking sound became much louder. So, I shut off the vehicle and made an appointment with the dealership. I gingerly drove my truck to the dealership. By the time I arrived, I had a flashing engine light, and the sound had become much louder. The dealership looked at my truck and told me I needed an engine replacement.
Engine is seized. 104k with regular and mostly dealer service, no mil, fluids were in spec.
I have a well maintained 2019 Ridgeline that at midnight on the highway started flashing a red motor sign at me, and within 10 miles was flashing all lights and chugging and grinding, stranding me. I found out Honda had recalled hundreds of thousands of cars due to a similar failure. I asked Honda customer service and my local dealer if I were to pay for diagnosis and it was the same failure as recalled motors, would they cover it, they won't answer me, but the dealer implies that I will pay all costs period, diagnostic fee as well as used motor cost, because even thought they quoted me a new motor at $20,000 they actually don't have the motor, so I have to take used motor. I went through a nightmare last year with them and had to pay $4000 for a torque converter repair while 2 1/2 yrs of my same truck got theirs free, mine was too newly built to be covered. I think they are borderline criminal in their actions.
