The contact's parents owned a 2014 Hyundai Accent. The contact stated that while her sister was driving at an undisclosed speed, her sister's daughter detected an abnormal odor coming from the vehicle. Another driver then alerted the contact's sister that the vehicle had caught fire. The contact's sister noticed flames coming from under the hood, and smoke filled the vehicle's cabin. No warning light was illuminated. The contact's sister exited the highway and pulled over to the side of the road. A bystander helped the contact's sister and daughter exit the vehicle. The vehicle was then engulfed in flames and exploded. The police and firefighters arrived on the scene, and the firefighters extinguished the fire. Police and fire department reports were filed. The contact's sister and daughter were not injured, but they did receive medical attention on the scene. The vehicle was towed to a tow yard, where it was deemed totaled by the insurance company. Upon investigation, the contact discovered that the VIN was included in NHTSA campaign number: 23v651000 (service brakes, hydraulic); however, the contact stated that her parents had not received the recall notification. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 80,000.
