Steering Rack And Pinion Problems of Hyundai Accent

The contact owns a 2016 Hyundai Accent. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the esp warning light suddenly illuminated and moments later the steering wheel could not be turned in either direction. The vehicle was towed to the local dealer who diagnosed that the steering rack and pinion had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 50,000.

My son was driving at around 30 mph on a 2 lane city street when the steering unit gave out and he almost lost control of the car. Looking under the car he noticed that the steering fluid was pouring out the rack and pinion gear box. I do understand that the car has over 100k miles on it and it more than 5 yrs old. However I have owned many cars within my lifetime and never had this issue - ever. Yet -I did notice on the nhsta website that there was another Hyundai Accent owner with same model year ( 2010 ) who lodged a similar complaint. And knowing that both the elantra's and sonta's have had similar issues with their steering components around the same time frame make me suspect that there is something more going on. I think- this should be investigated by the nhsta.

Going down a hill, my niece suddenly could not steer her vehicle, resulting in 3 teenage deaths, and 3 serious injuries. Upon inspection of the vehicle, the front axle had a clean break in it. The driver's side tire was also mangled. The vehicle was totalled.
