The contact owns a 2001 Hyundai Elantra. While driving approximately 35 mph, the contact noticed that the vehicle had begun to fish tail. The contact inspected the rear sub frame and discovered that the frame was fractured and exhibited excessive corrosion. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. 5 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 09/25/2012

Vehicle is garage kept in southwest virginia, not a northern salty climate. Taken in for muffler repair and when put on lift the rear crossmember fell out. It had completely rusted through frame ! like I said this car is barely driven and we usually don't even get snow in the winter so there is not much salt if at all ! I have had my grandkids in the back of this car ! it's not just where the rear crossmember is that's rusted either ! talking about a rust bucket, you can peel layers and chunks of rusted metal off with your hands ! these cars should not even be allowed on the roads ! somebody is going to die from these ! after talking to some other Elantra owners they were not aware of this situation either but have found issues to be the same ! the front cradle was already replaced due to rust recall and crashes ! I guess Hyundai won't do anything cause our government won't make them ! I mean seriously think about it like this- would you put your kids or grandkids in this car ? I sure hope you don't have to ! I will never own another korean vehicle as my kia was the same way ! dangerously rusted and newer than the Hyundai ! please, please. Please save somebody's kids from failing through a rusty floor. Mine is so eaten up with rust I'm obligated to send it to the crusher. For gods sake if you own a korean vehicle check more than your oil. I just wish we would have thought to !.

6 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2004

Check engine light came on three different times first repair was engine manifold, second repair was oxygen sensor, third time the dealer could not find the problem. Dealer probably unplugged the light all repairs were under warranty but dealer suggested I get the service done since they had it in the shop. Both sun visor plastic clips that hold the visor in place broke off and on the passenger side the visor is broken at the swivel arm. All of the small plastic door plugs have fell out. Remote gas tank door will not open on cold days. Vehicle pulls to the right and wheel shakes at speeds 35 and above. Small scratch in paint goes down to the primer.

7 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 11/06/2003

As with others that I have read the steering wheel vibrates over 60-65 mph and stops at higher speeds. The vechicle also pulls to the right. I have the original tires and have had my car since new. I have had 2 wheel alignments, 2 tire rotations and all tires balanced. All temporary fixes. The pulling gradually returned as did the vibration on the steering wheel. I don't feel safe driving this car.

8 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 05/23/2003

Odi id number : 10010329 odi id number : 10016373 please add me to the list of Hyundai Elantra owners who have severe steering wheel shake at speeds above 60 mph and Hyundai has no idea how to correct the trouble. This has occurred since the vehicle was new and numerous attempts to fix the trouble have been fruitless. Unfortunately the problem is getting worse with mileage until the steering or tires are going to fall off at 65 mph.

9 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 04/22/2003

This vehicle is hazardous to be on the road. It has front end steering and suspension problems. It has a terrible vibration from 35 mph and up. If traveling on the highway the wheel shakes so badly that your hands go numb. I have had the vehicle in for service and repeated time over a two and a half year period, and the dealership has done nothing. I have also spoken with the manufacturers on several occasions, and have done nothing. It has gotten to the point that I had an accident, because of these problems. I now have a permanent injury that I will live with for the rest of my life, and they still do not care. I have 2 small children, and I am afraid every time I leave the house that something will happen with this vehicle, and one of my children get injured. Fortunately, with my accident I was alone. In my accident my steering locked and I hit a stone embankment at about 40 mph with the front end and my air bag also did not deploy. Unfortunately I am stuck driving this vehicle, when it is unsafe, and unfit to be on the road. It is a hazard to my family, and all others on the road with me. I sincerely hope something can be done to these dealerships, and manufacturers to ensure they are selling our consumers a safe and reliable vehicle.

10 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 12/18/2002

During the winter of 2002, I began to experience a vibration in the steering wheel, along with the vehicle pulling to the right. I brought the vehicle to the local dealer who, after charging me for a balance and rotation to "identify the problem" told me that the problem was with the tires and alignment. The dealer insisted that there was no problem in the front end. In June, 2003 I had the factory michelin's (which had about 32,00 miles when the problem started) replaced with new tires and a four wheel alignment. The pulling is gone, but the vibration remains. It is particulalry noticeable at highway speeds.

11 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 07/17/2002

The vehicle has a moderate to severe steering wheel vibration that occurs at freeway speeds. The vibration can, at times, shake your hands back and forth as the wheel is gripped. Other people I know that own Elantras complain of the same problem. I have contacted the dealership and Hyundai customer service several times, but nobody seems to have any solution to the problem. The date provided is the first time I had the vehicle in to have them look at the car for the vibration. I first reported it during the 12 month/12,000 free adjustment period. Since then, the car has been to two different dealerships to attempt to fix the vibration. The last service done to try to correct the problem was a radial force balance. This seemed to help slightly, but the vibration still persisted and remains entirely unacceptable.

12 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 06/04/2002

Car shimmies really bad at 35 miles an hour replaced front brakes and rotors front struts tie rod ends both inner and outer to no avail I am sick of putting money in this piece of junk.

13 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 03/25/2002

At 20,000 miles, the rear tires were worn badly and unevenly. Was told by a michelin dealer it was unsafe to ride on tires. Was told by 2 dealerships (who did not look at the car) this was a rotation problem, even though the front tires were fine. Dealership finally realigned rear wheels, both were out of toe to the same degree. I complained the manufacturer should replace the tires since it was a problem with the factory setting and not due to negligence in maintenance. They finally agreed to pay half the replacement cost of the tires.

14 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 09/15/2001

After 1 1/2 months of driving this brand new car I began having problems with the steering. The car would wonder in different directions on the road and freeway. I also had steering wheel shimmy. They have aligned my car at least five times on different occasions and forced balanced the car twice to no avail. In March of 2003 an independent service evaluated my car and found both tie rod ends (outers)were extremely lose and needed to be replaced. Because of the faulty rods both the front tires are now cupped on the outer edges and the dealership refuses to replace them. Hyundai performed the work and the problems got a little better, but have since gotten worse again. I am so fed up with this car and need help! I have filed complaint with Hyundai customer service, but the problems still exist!.

15 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2001

Steering wheel vibration and shimmy since new. Takes place only at speeds above sixty miles per hour. Hyundai is aware of the problem and has not offered an actual solution to the problem as of yet. Numerous other Hyundai owners have the same complaint.
