Tl the contact owns a 2009 Hyundai Elantra. While the vehicle was in reverse, the steering wheel became difficult to turn. The contact had to turn the steering wheel with force. In addition, the electronic power steering indicator illuminated while the failure occurred. The failure was experienced several times. However, when the contact restarted the engine, the steering wheel regained normal function. The vehicle was taken to joe machens Hyundai (1300 vandiver drive, columbia, mo 65202, (573) 474-7400) where it was diagnosed that the steering motor failed and the steering column needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer stated that the vehicle was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 15v100000 (steering). The failure mileage was 182,000.

2 Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 12/25/2012

The contact owns a 2009 Hyundai Elantra. The contact stated that while driving 55 mph, the steering wheel became difficult to turn and the electronic stability program and electronic stability control lights illuminated. The vehicle was restarted, where it began to function normally. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was found that the steering column had failed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted. The failure mileage was 71,000 and the current mileage was 71,243.

3 Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 01/04/2012

The contact owns a 2009 Hyundai Elantra. The contact stated that the steering wheel seized while driving 65 mph. The contact shifted into neutral and shut the vehicle off while it was in motion. Upon restart, the contact regained steering and maneuvered to the shoulder. The failure had since recurred on an intermittent basis. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer and the contact was informed that the steering motor failed. The vehicle was in the process of being repaired.
