general problems of the 2010 Hyundai Elantra

When I am driving with my seatbelt on for no reason at all my seatbelt comes undone doesn't happen all the time but several times it has happened to me. And then there is something wrong with the transmission. Doesn't shift right away so it like jerks or lunges when it finally goes into gear. I have noticed both of these problems since 2/28/2025.

So I was driving my vehicle like normal and all of a sudden the driver airbag light came on on the dash and as I’m getting closer to home my check engine light came on my abs came on as well as my eps and my tps , was losing power to the vehicle. I made it home, put it in park and smoke started rolling. Look under the hood. There’s a fire under the hood. I’m not sure what all damage it has caused, but it appears to be coming from the abs and the electrical I don’t know what damage was caused by the abs catching fire, but I was unaware that there was a problem with the vehicle, I am I just bought the vehicle in may and it’s just happened August 11 of 2023.

I have a 2010 Hyundai Elantra. Two times in the last 3 months I was driving and for no reason at all my car would rev up and my speed would accelerate. In October this happened I was so scared that I quickly turned into a gas station and was hit by another vehicle. The next time it happened I was lucky on the road that wasn't busy and I was able to just take my foot off the gas until it returned to normal. After that I had no more issues until about 2 weeks ago. I was driving around 30 miles an hour when the engine just shuts down. But the power was still there. I honestly don't know how to explain it. First I tried pressing the gas pedal nothing happened no movement, no sound, nothing. So I put the car and park because it was still in drive. After that I tried restarting car and it sounded like it wanted to start but it wouldn't. Try it again nothing. Thinking it was a bad connection to the battery I got out and checked battery and terminals. It looked fine and I had no way of testing so I had to push my vehicle out of the street. Luckily two gentlemen came over and help me push. Thinking still it was just the battery I called roadside assistance and someone from the company came and tried jump starting my car with no luck. I ended up having to get my car towed. Next day I tried starting with no luck. Try it again yesterday and it makes this fast ticking or clicking noise automatically before I even try to start it and it doesn't stop until I turn off the key. And the worst part about all this is I'm not even in the town I live I'm at a friend's house sitting an hour and a half away from my apartment. I can't bring to a mechanic because it doesn't drive and I don't have the money to fix it. I won't be able to have christmas with my family because of this issue. I'm honestly just dumbfounded I don't have a clue of what to do or what happened. Please file a report so no one else ends up in my situation if you could provide any help in this matter I would be grateful.

2010 Hyundai Elantra: recently experienced a vehicle fire. It occurred on Tuesday, December 29, 2020. . I parked my vehicle on the street per usual and maybe 15 minutes after arriving home from work my mother began yelling that was my vehicle was in flames! I opened the front door and saw it was indeed in flames and popping and smoking. I immediately called 911 whom sent out the fire department. After they were able to distinguish the fire, they determined the cause to be electrical in nature considering the battery of the vehicle was completely gone. I have the case number as well. My vehicle was turned off and parked and randomly caught fire. Thankfully I wasnt in it when it happened or things could have beem alot worse. But I am now without a vehicle and on top of that I had to pay to get the vehicle removed from my apartments property.

Inside door opening handle on driver side metal covering is peeling off and is sharp.

Rec'd recall notice. Don;t have; not now or ever the owner if this car. . Owner claimed 2b future Ford roseville CA which is proven criminal org that admits to theft by fraud under pretext that credit exemplary persons will "pay anyway" on forged sale documents. I know nothing about said vehicle or t sobee employee.

I received a letter from Hyundai regarding my 2010 Hyundai Elantra. A recall relay in the vehicles main junction box. For the anti- lock brake system. It was recall Feb 2020. Received the letter April 6,2020. They waited to long to send the letter.

Door handle defective. Mirror defective.

Whenever I turn on the a/c (summer) or heater (winter) a really bad odor comes out from the vents. Odor smells like mold, mildew and causes me to cough and get bad headaches. I have changed the cabin filter thinking it was it but odor persists when the a/c, heater or fan are being used. I have had it for 1 year and it has not gone away and actually gotten worse.

Car stalls while driving on both highway and side streets. Won't start up right away. Each time it happened it took longer and longer for it to start.

When turning the car off and removing keys, it doesn't turn completely off. I have to put the keys back into the ignition, turn on and remove again roughly to make the car turn off. This has been happening for a few months.

While my car was sitting in the driveway the back glass shattered. I live in a rural area and no one was around. I had just went out and opened the back doors and walked around the back of the car and gone back into the house for a minute and when I came back it was shattered.

The rims on my 5 year old car look like it was parked in the ocean they are rusting so bad and this car has never lived north of carolina. I am afraid that this defect is going to cause my wheel to fall off one day. The steering wheel started popping or catching whenever I try to turn the vehicle to the left, but dealership tells me it is not on the recall list, so it will cost $110 just to look at the problem. The driver’s side window is very hard going up or down (makes a load thud when it gets to the top or bottom) and I am afraid it is going to break the glass one of these days. The dashboard is much discolored (that started after only 2 years of owning the car). The interior door handles have the metal wrapping peeling off causing me to cut my hand when I go to open the door. I fear that my car is a “lemon” and I am very disappointed as this is my second Hyundai (bought them both brand new) and this one is a piece of junk – but the dealership won’t help.

While driving down the highway heard a loud bang, and was covered in shattered glass as the sunroof exploded for no reason.

Eps light comes on and the power steering would shut off. This happen about four times and I able to shut the car off, restart and drive. The last time I was was on the highway and it happen again. Luckly I was able to get to the side of the road and restarted the car. First time at the dealer, they said it was just a computer up-grade for $98. One week later it happen again. This time the dealer is telling me the steering column need to be replaced because of a senor for $2,500 plus. What's going on with this? I see on the internet I'm not the first. Why has there been no re-call if this such an issue that could result in an crash or someone getting killed. It can be a good thing if I lose steering on a highway in the middle of a rush-hour?.

Earlier this summer my front passenger window, driver control would roll the window down but not up, then about 2 months later the same issue with the driver side rear window it is very puzzling how the driver control will lower the involved windows, but its as if the driver controls are dead when trying to roll up??? but if you use the up switch on the door the window is associated with they work both ways. Risky in some of the areas I have to travel for work to reach over or behind you to put up windows! had anyone experienced these problems?.

A failing transmission in a low mileage car is an issue. At just over 51,000 miles my automatic transmission began jerking into gear between 2nd and 3rd. After having it diagnosed I was told they were able to "sort-of feel what I was talking about" and initially recommended a fluid change. When I asked questions about that, suddenly I was told it was in internal failure and I needed the transmission replaced. That evening the slipping got worse and the transmission hesitated going into reverse and had a big problem shifting up hills. With a transmission not shifting normally and power being affected because of that, this is a safety issue. This problem developed quickly and did not present itself as one might expect a failing transmission to do.

The metallic covering on both front inner door handles has rippled and started peeling. The metallic sheet covering both handles is very sharp and has caused me to slice my hands/fingers multiple times as I attempt to open the door. It's sturdy enough that it is difficult to just peel off, so I am constantly being cut by my handles and am worried this may soon happen to my passenger(s) and/or children.

While driving I went to dim the rear view mirror because someone had their brights on me and the rear view mirror fell off. It shocked me and so when I pulled over to look at exactly what happened I noticed that it was not the adhesive to just wear off, a chunk of the glass came off with the rear view mirror. There is currently a hole in my windshield, it is not all the way through but a mechanic said if I even hit a pothole too hard the windshield can shatter. I am not the hulk and can't rip apart glass so the only thing I can think of is that this is a serious manufacturer defect. The dealership I bought the car from are unable to see me tomorrow and I really hope that this can be resolved. Thank you.

April 1st 2014 at aprox. 9:15am while preforming an emergency acceleration in a 2010 Hyundai Elantra se with aprox. 103000 miles car became stuck accelerating and continued to do once foot was lifted from both petals. Breaks were effective at slowing vehicle but engine continued to accelerate at full throttle. Tapping accelerator was tried and was ineffective. Car was shifted by operator into neutral and red-lined on rpm. Operator slammed accelerator peddle to floor again and unintended acceleration stopped and car returned to normal function. No cruse control was being used, no hazard warning symbols came on. Car was shifted back to drive and no accident or injury occurred. Car accelerated to aprox 70mph under these conditions. Car was brought to a Hyundai dealer for service a few hrs later who noted and showed customer how oem floor mats when properly installed can pop up and trap accelerator peddle down if accelerator peddle is forced to floor rapidly. Dealer was able to duplicate issue and removed floor mat from mounting on floor and left loose in driver's foot area. Customer put floor mat in back seat to avoid issues.

Horn doesn't work if humid or raining on local streets or highway. When on highway using speed control have felt speed pickup after setting speed limit. Reported to coconut creek dealership repair couldn't find anything wrong. Told me not to use speed control.

While driving approximately 40 mph, the vehicle would hesitate before accelerating. Also when the transmission was put into reverse, the vehicle would hesitate before suddenly moving backward. The vehicle was diagnosed but no problem was found. The vehicle continued to experience the defect after being diagnosed. This is starting to happen daily. I have noticed that many people on this site have had the same issue. This really needs to be looked into before it becomes a bigger problem. It can cause accidents. When trying to accelerate and enter highways it's a problem. The car hesitates and revs before accelerating.

I put my 2010 Hyundai Elantra in the garage about 11:00 pm on Sunday night August 11, 2013. At about 01:00 am on August 12, 2013 I was awakened with my entire garage on fire. The fire appeared to come from the front of the Elantra, as both front tires were completely burned with only steel wires wrapped around wheels. Engine is warped and burned. Entire front end melted. I lost my garage and contents along with kayaks on kayak trailer parked beside garage. Both neighbors' privacy fences were burned down behind and beside my garage. The Elantra burned completely from the fire. No steering wheel or upholstery left. All aluminum parts melted. Radiator melted. Wires melted. Even the battery was melted.

Returning from south jersey with my minor son, the eps light came on while in the process of changing lanes. The steering wheel locked up causing the vehicle to do a bit of swerving. Managed to pull off to the side of the road and call for help. Prior to all this, vehicle was taken to Hyundai in paramus, NJ for a recall for some other part. At this time, I complained about the eps as it was something that was happening before. The light would come on, the vehicle would lock up and upon turning off the ignition and restarting the vehicle, it would reset itself. At Hyundai, they alleged testing the vehicle for the eps problem however nothing came up and they refused to address that issue. This time on 8/10/13, the light is now on and the vehicle will not rest itself. I tried calling Hyundai for this defect and was put on hold indefinitely. I then sent an email to them about it and they refused to respond. In my email to them, I expressed this was a serious saftey issue and a defect on their part which needs to be addressed and at the expense of Hyundai. Still no response. I am filing this complaint as I expected more from them and have gotten nothing.

Vehicle shakes and rattles inside at 35-40 mph,also decreased acceleration! noisy, uncomfortable and embarrassing.

When I purchased the car on the 23 of feburary the salesman assured me nothing was wrong with this car had only had one owner noticed that in the interior of the car there were water rings and a mold substance slaesman assured it was not mold took it basck 2 days later they replaced struts and again voiced my concern about mold was assured again it was not took it back on 13 of March the owner called and advised me to pick up car stated they had some one come out and inspect the car and they determined it was not mold when ask for a copy of document was told inspector refused to leave one. Esc light kept coming on sales manager instructed service dept not to touch my car got test run to check for reports on esc it came back with 2 code c1260(steering sensor)the other b1322(airbag controll)was told if it came back on to bring it back. I have tried to get these issues corrected on more that 4 occasions the owner didn't see a problem with the way I was treated . Mold is a health hazard I use my car for work. I am in home health and drive the elderly around this is very unhealthy and I think the dealership should correct this at their cost.

Tire blew into shred's causing vehicle to hit curb and me trying to swerve to avoid it couldn't turn the wheel fast enough $10,100 later in damages at my own insurance cost a hurt shoulder that I can't do anything about.

2010 Hyundai Elantra. Consumer wanted to know were any recalls issued related to defects in the steering, accelerator problems, suspension problems or brake problems.

I have a 2010 Hyundai Elantra. Filed a report on the suspension, steering and brakes. This report is something I didn't think about until I saw others were having these two issues. 1. When you take the key out of the ignition, it still dings and the doors won't lock. I am assuming it still think the key is in the ignition. You have to put the key back in and take it out again to get the dinging to stop. 2. I have two cigarette lighter receptacles (now known as 12v accessory sockets). Cannot use both at the same time as it causes the tpms light to come on. A few seconds after one of the receptacles have been emptied the tpms light goes out. The first issue happens while parked and the second issues happens whether parked or driving . . . Mostly when driving.
