1 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 10/09/2025

Dear NHTSA, I am filing this complaint to formally report a serious vehicle safety hazard and to express concern over how Hyundai/genesis has handled it. My 2016 Hyundai Genesis 3. 8 awd experienced a n engine compartment fire originating from the starter motor, which subsequently melted the engine wiring harness and surrounding components. This fire could have easily caused serious injury or death, as it occurred shortly after starting the vehicle. Fortunately, I was able t o shut the vehicle off and get t o safety before the flames spreadthe dealership and Genesis customer care opened a case (case #41642221) but later informed me that this was "not related" to the existing Hyundai/genesis recall involving the same starter and wiring harness fire risk. Their explanation was that my incident was merely a "coincidence" - despite the identical cause and symptoms described in the recall documentation. This reasoning is unacceptable, irresponsible, and ignores the fundamental issue: the fire originated from the starter, the same component already known t o have a fire-related defect. Dismissing a near-identical safety incident as unrelated poses a severe public safety concern and suggests Hyundai/genesis may be avoiding accountability for additional affected vehicles outside the recall's VIN range. I believe this defect and the manufacturer's response warrant a n urgent NHTSA investigation into the scope of the existing recall and whether it should be expanded. This issue is not only mechanical but life-threatening, as an engine fire caused by electrical failure could easily occur while driving or in an occupied area. Please investigate this issue and ensure Hyundai/genesis takes full responsibility for this defect before someone I s seriously injured or killed.

4 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 06/04/2024

I have been told to not park my car in the garage or near any structure. A fire could happen any time, while driving, or parked in the garage or outside the garage. I've spoken to a Genesis representative who told me they could not give me a loaner until they have a fix. My wife is 80 and handicapped. I'm 83 and we're very concerned about our safety. We live in a condo community that has no room to park on the street, so I'm parking behind my garage. I believe all these things are special circumstances and warrant special dispensation. It sure would take some stress out of lives if we could get a loaner.

5 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 04/08/2024

My 2016 Hyundai Genesis has several open recalls. I cannot get a dealership to help me get these issues resolved. One recall in particular Hyundai recall number 254 is causing major safety issues. My car does not start 90% of the time without being jumped and now the car will die out while driving. It has caused me to almost wreck several times. I have called all of the local Hyundai dealerships none of which say they can get me in for weeks and that there is no fix for my problem. If I do get to someone to book an appointment, when they hear the problem they put me on permahold and then the line disconnects! this is a major safety issue and needs to be fixed by Hyundai immediately.

6 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

We have a 2016 Hyundai Genesis 3. 8l sedan w/90,000 miles and the oil pressure sensor light came on. It seems, based on our research, that this is a common issue with this engine. The repair is quite expensive and seems to be a design flaw.

Car is shutting off when stopped. When it shuts off, the engine light comes on, the battery lights, the eps, the master warning light, the fca system light, and the epb. When the engine shuts off, I still have power to my car and the radio still playing but nothing to my engine. My car have been shutting off all this month and that’s not normal,.

9 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 04/22/2023

Car experience loss of control to accelerator while driving on major highway. The vehicle's speed coasted down from highway speed of 65mph to low 50s before vehicle was safely stopped on roadside emergency breakdown lane. This incident could have easily resulted in a collision with faster-moving traffic. The vehicle has been transported to a dealer for inspection to determine the cause, however this episode appears very similar to a documented issue in 2016 with a faulty fuel harness and low pressure fuel pump. No warnings or indications were present until after the car was turned off and restarted.

14 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 12/05/2018

If I do not fill the auto with a premium blend gasoline the car will inconsistently over rev and jerk into gear if I accelerate somewhat suddenly. This response is quite odd and could cause an accident since the car kicks into gear rather hard after accelerating and then letting off the gas. The sensation is the same as experiencing a light but loud rear end collision from behind. The car is luxurious and big therefore, you wouldn't expect this type jolting from the drive train.

15 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 04/13/2018

About a month before the incident, the vehicle was fully imspected in official dealership, no issues reported. A few days before the incident, the wipers started working with the engine off; I scheduled an appointment for an inspection. The vehicle was leased with about 10 months left on the lease. On April 13, 2018 after driving for 1,5-2 hours, I parked it and went to the office for 10-15 minutes; on my way back to the vehicle I heard the fire trucks coming; as I was approaching my vehicle I realized that my vehicle was on fire. The inspector reported the engine explosion due to manufacturers problem. So basically happy to be alive as nobody knows what would had happened with me and my kids in the vehicle driving on a highway; so after more than 3,5 months Hyundai finncial still did not close the case although they stated that they are in the process of paying off the vehicle. Nobody ever said sorry; I call to Hyundai / Hyundai financial every day and all they do is they tranfer me from one department to another; the case manager assigned to our case never picks the phone, never calls back, to reach him I need to call to the supervisor and complain and only than I receive a call from him. 2 months ago he stated he would close the case the coming Monday. No actions since then so far.

16 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 05/11/2017

Changed lanes at 30 to 40 mph in a residential area, removed foot from gas pedal, heard engine revving high then within one to two seconds I felt and heard a hard bang and heavy push. Thought someone hit me, but no one did. Car startled me and my wife. It felt like the engine disconnected from the transmission, then reengaged, which gave the sudden outcome. This has been three weeks and no further incident. I could only imagine if this happened on a high way or at a critical point of driving. I think it can be a safety concern.

17 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 12/22/2015

I purchaseda2016 hyundia Genesis on Dec. 17, 2015. I enrolled in their blink service that night and attempted to enroll in their remote car starting service that is an added service to their blink connect service. We were unable to add the remote package due to an internet server problem. We were able to successfully enroll in the remote starting service until Dec 21. On the morning of 12/23 I logged on to the smartphone app and proceeded to remote start my car for 2 minutes. My car was parked 3 car detached garage with double door garage door opened. I stood at backdoor to watch the car start successfully. I walked away and 5 minutes later I when to see that my car was no longer running. It was not. I left my garage door opened. I was in my office and at 1:10 pm my next door neighbor who can also see my garage from back of her house to tell me the lights on my car have been on for long time. She knew I bought a new car and thought it was strange that my lights were still on. I investigate the problem. I found my car with the lights on with the engine running. The dashboard display showed that I was low on fuel. I turned off car and immediately contacted hyundia customer care and spoke to a representative to report my extreme concern. Before I purchased I called hyundia to make sure that this car had an automatic shut off program system. I saw a 60 min report on people who died after forgetting to turn off car with key less starters and their cars did not have an automatic shut off program. The hyindia customer rep took my report told me to have dealer service check system and also turned me over to a blink rep who I reported the incidence to with all the details who gave me the case number of bl000293583. I had driven the car the night before and note that their was 7/8 of a tank left. Car had to be running for hours to use that much gas b4 I shut car off.
