36 Power Train problem of the 2020 Hyundai Kona

Failure Date: 03/04/2024

We just had our 2020 Kona updated from the dealer with major software and recall updates. Since that point the car has been draining from the 12volt battery on it's own and killing the charging circuit for the battery. It has caused us to have to jump start the car and not be able to keep the 12 volt charged which runs all of the environmentals and car systems. Unless you have a jump pack with you, you have to jump it after every stop. I have tested the battery and it is fine but the system needs a high end initial draw and is not getting it. I have contacted the dealer but they are saying it is not their problem. This needs government address, as it is the same issue in the NHTSA recalls or hybrid and ev sonata and ioniq 5 models.

37 Power Train problem of the 2021 Hyundai Kona

Failure Date: 02/17/2024

My 2021 Hyundai Kona awd will not operate. It only has 18,000 miles on it and I bought it new. I had the oil changed at 7,000 miles. The dealership made me wait a month to take a look at it, and I believe that they know there is an issue with this model so they are trying to stall. I plan to request a buyback. The last time I tried to drive it, it died every time the car came to a brake. I had to sit with my emergency lights flashing for a few minutes to get it to start again, only to have it die at the next light. This is very dangerous.

38 Power Train problem of the 2024 Hyundai Kona

Failure Date: 02/13/2024

I bought the 2024 Kona n line in January of 2024. It had 64 miles on it. At 1,149 miles, an alert from bluelink stated that a code showed up, stating engine, power train issue. I contacted my local Hyundai dealership, the one I bought the Kona from, and bought it in. The service department stated that they cannot fix it because it was a dtc code error, and that since the check engine light wasn't on, I was stuck. I brought the vehicle in 2 more times after that. The vehicle would idle high when in park, the engine would rev up at odd times, even while driving, like I was ramming my foot down on the gas peddle, which I was not. Also, while traveling up hill, the engine seemed to catch and want to shut off before catching itself. It would idle high while doing that as well. I'm at a loss on what else to do.

39 Power Train problem of the 2020 Hyundai Kona

Failure Date: 01/19/2024

The issue is when I'm decelerating to around 5 mph and go to accelerate again, there is a horrible grinding sound from the transmission and I can no longer accelerate. I then have to stop and re accelerate. This is dangerous if there is a car coming and I pull out and have to stop all of a sudden. I have 2 separate videos of the issue. The dealership won't fix it under warranty because they can't replicate it. The dealership won't even take a look at anything.

40 Power Train problem of the 2022 Hyundai Kona

43 Power Train problem of the 2021 Hyundai Kona

Failure Date: 10/27/2023

The 2021 Kona sel plus at awd suddenly changed into the manual low gear and abruptly stalled in traffic. The Kona was stopped at a traffic light. When the traffic light turned green and the car was driven, the Kona's transmission seemed to switch into the manual low gear creating a high rpm. After it crossed the intersection, the Kona stalled and stopped abruptly in traffic. Shortly thereafter, the car was restarted and it went back to driving normally. The Kona was taken to the dealership but they could not find any code. So they say without a code, they can not do anything. This is a serious safety problem. I have a video of the incident. I have contacted Hyundaiusa and they will not do anything without a code.

44 Power Train problem of the 2020 Hyundai Kona

Transmission stutters and slips between 1-2k rpms, especially at low speeds and in stop and go traffic. I took my vehicle to the dealer. At less than 20,000 miles they said transmission wear is at 85%. Unacceptable performance and concerning that this will continue to degrade.

We were diving on the interstate and the rpms went up all the way up and after it came back down the car wouldn’t respond anymore and came to a stop while on the interstate putting my family safety at risk! there were no notifications before the car came to a stop while on the interstate but when we pulled over to the shoulder we tried to start the car again and then the check engine light came on saying there was issues with the transmission control system. We had the car towed to Hyundai of metairie on 5/28/23 and notified Hyundai of everything that happened. We were assigned a case# from Hyundai on 5/30/23. We were later contacted by the Hyundai case manager on 6/9/23 and the service department letting us know that a new transmission will need to be installed on a brand new car we only had for 33 days at the time of this incident!.

51 Power Train problem of the 2021 Hyundai Kona

Failure Date: 05/16/2023

After stopping for a traffic sign, I proceeded to go forward when a loud noise occurred ( grinding of gears), I loss power to move forward. A car in back of me had to apply his brakes to avoid hitting me. I pulled over to the curb and parked. Upon starting up again, I did not have full power to accelerate. I also could not put the car in reverse. About 10 minutes later, I received a message on the car information screen “ a possible condition with your transmission control system has been detected with your 2021 Kona” “ a full system check is recommended to be done soon”. I then drove it to a dealership where it is now.

52 Power Train problem of the 2019 Hyundai Kona

Camshaft pin sheared with 66,000 miles leading to severe engine damage and expense. No known cause but consistent with many online reports of engine issues with this make and model year. 53 Power Train problem of the 2019 Hyundai Kona

Failure Date: 03/05/2023

While driving at highway speed, the vehicle suddenly shifts to a lower gear, slowing it down violently enough to knock items out of the cupholder. It then displays an warning light and refuses to accelerate. The only way to fix the problem is to turn over and shut down the car to reset everything.

54 Power Train problem of the 2018 Hyundai Kona

Failure Date: 02/25/2023

Oil change was on 1/13/2023 at 33,505 miles. On 2/25/2023 at 35,366 miles after driving on the highway for about 30 mins at 65 mph, the oil light came on and car was making a loud noise as I pulled in to park. My car was parked for about 1. 5hrs at my destination. I attempted to drive home and get back on the highway when my engine stalled at about 40 mph and my engine and battery light came on. I had to pull over to the shoulder as my car would not drive anymore. My car was then towed to my house and later to the Hyundai dealer where they determined that my engine stalled due to lack of oil because my drain plug was missing. Hyundai refuses to fix this under warranty because the drain plug is missing and they are insisting this is because of the oil change place I went to nearly 2 months ago. When I went to the oil change place, they insist that they didn't do anything wrong, and if they did incorrectly put the drain plug on, my oil would've leaked much sooner than it did. There is currently and investigation with NHTSA with my exact issue where the oil drain plug still falls out, even if the person performing the oil change puts the drain plug on exactly how it should be. Directly from the NHTSA site: "apparently, the thin metal, along with engine vibrations and expansion/contraction tend to loosen the drain plug without any other intervention. Nhtsa is investigating this as a factory defect issue. " my safety was deeply put at risk as I was driving on the highway when this happened and I could've easily gotten into an accident and faced injuries. I'm stuck in the middle as the oil change place denies it is their fault and Hyundai refuses to fix under warranty strictly because the oil drain plug is missing. When I explained to them that I would've have this issue with my engine if the drain plug was present, they agreed. They are stating that it is $10,000 to repair my car and that I have to pay upfront and cannot do multiple payments.

55 Power Train problem of the 2018 Hyundai Kona

56 Power Train problem of the 2021 Hyundai Kona

Failure Date: 12/31/2022

The car has never been good on gas or changing gears when drive mode was changed to sport from the beginning. It would say 200 miles to drive I will drive 30 miles and it will go down to 130. Recently the engine light has come on the car stalls when going a very low speeds and appears to have problems changing gears. Now I am receiving a crankshaft position camshaft powertrain system code p0017. Not even a year old 28k miles. I understand there are recalls on this make model and year yet my VIN is not registered.

57 Power Train problem of the 2019 Hyundai Kona

Failure Date: 12/23/2022

This is my 2nd Hyundai Kona - the first had slippage in the dct (dual clutch transmission) which the dealer adjusted for me. It continued to happen if I accelerated quickly and was part of the reason I traded it in. The second had no issues until 115k miles at which point the dtc smelled bad once, then sounded bad the next day. I called the dealer and made an appointment to have it inspected/evaluated and it died minutes later, before I got it to them. Online forums state that while there has been no recall issued yet, the Konas with the 1. 6l turbo are susceptible to dct issues, particularly in the 2019s and that several dealers are replacing parts free of charge when the vehicle is in for maintenance. Because mine exceeds the 100k warranty, I am being told that I will need to pay for the repairs. This is my only complaint about an otherwise fantastic automobile!.

58 Power Train problem of the 2020 Hyundai Kona

Failure Date: 12/12/2022

For the last 2 weeks I’ve been hearing weird engine noises. Like metal pieces being grinded. The car has issues accelerating. Will not change gears properly causing the car to redline on the tachometer. Just today I hear noises a lot more frequently and as I’m driving and coming to a slow turn the car stalled out on me. I quickly put the car in park and started the car and it started back up. But now I feel a loss in power in the car. The car stalled on me more than six times. Every time I came to a complete stop the car would stall. So every stop sign and red light the car was stalling. The car is still under warranty but I do hope this can be resolved. I know it’s the engine that’s definitely having internal mechanical issues and transmission as well. Also the 2 lower headlights are also out as well. This is with the car having 34705 miles only. Wast expecting to have this many issues. I have a video of the car stalling out as well and another showing a rough idle on the car.

59 Power Train problem of the 2021 Hyundai Kona

Failure Date: 12/09/2022

When you press on the gas, many times there is a very delayed reaction for power. This resulted in my safety put at risk. I have mentioned this to mechanic, they say it is the transmission. I see where there was a recall for 'automatic transmission that may disengage when the car is being driven'. This is NHTSA campaign number 22v746000. And Hyundai's number for this recall is 236. I would like to know if my car should be included in the 236.

60 Power Train problem of the 2022 Hyundai Kona

Failure Date: 11/06/2022

22’ Kona n dct base us spec. 5,600 miles est (2nd Kona) fuel used: shell premium outside temp: 76f/dry-clear sky. This is my 2nd Kona n, this is the 4th experience I’ve had with my Kona n’s. Towed the first on VIN# nu001519 to dealer, engine stalled after refueling during a road trip. 6/7k miles. Misfire. No replaced parts, car started acting normal. Then I traded it in for another Kona n in June 22’. The vehicle in normal mode is fine. I believe. Switching from n mode is where the engine starts misfiring and runs on 3,2cyl puffing out white smoke. Leaving me stranded. The codes all show via car touch screen, and obd reader/history. All electronics perform properly, including active safety features. I am Hyundai affiliated but I do not know how to relay the message. All of the Kona n/elantra n/veloster n dct. Need software updates. It’s a bug, I honestly think.

61 Power Train problem of the 2022 Hyundai Kona

Failure Date: 10/25/2022

While on the highway the transmission completely stopped shifting and stayed in first gear and would only rev up the engine when the accelerator was applied. I was able to get up to 50mph and slowly make my way to the dealership where I bought it 2 months ago. I turned the vehicle off went inside to talk to the service center where I was told that it'd take 2 to 3 days to even get my car in to get looked at and they did not have any loaners to give me. I still had to work and couldn't take time off so I went back to my car and restarted it after a few minutes and it drove regularly.

62 Power Train problem of the 2022 Hyundai Kona

Failure Date: 09/22/2022

When I pull up to my driveway, which is on a 45-degree angle from the street for approximately 100 feet, and stop the car with the vehicle brake, take my foot off the brake and leave the transmission in drive, the car sits for approximately 15 seconds and then, without any input, the car will climb the hill. I was curious, so I turn the car around and backed into the driveway, and it did the same thing in reverse. I hate to think that a small child would be sitting in the driveway and the diver didn't see them. My question is would the car keep going and run over the child?.

63 Power Train problem of the 2023 Hyundai Kona

Failure Date: 09/19/2022

My 2023 Hyundai Kona sel fwd currently has approximately 1500 miles on the odometer. Pretty much since the day I my 2023 Kona sel on 9/3/2022, the car has had an issue where, after I start the car and begin driving it for about 20 or 30 seconds the car will lose power entirely. Engine shuts down, and the following warning codes illuminate-immobilizer, check engine light, battery light, and oil lights come on and the car prompts me to restart it. Sometimes an alarm will also sound, flashing red, with the following message on the vehicle's information display "engine off! shift to n, then start engine. " at other times the following message will appear "shift to p and n to start engine. " initially this happened once or twice a week, 1-2 times a day, usually after the vehicle has been powered off for 12 or more hours. As of the writing of this message, 11/2/2022, this issue occured 4 times in one day. The first time in the morning while I was driving the vehicle at low speeds and applied the brakes, and the other 3 times in the evening, also while I was driving at low speeds and applied the brake. Fortunately, vehicle shuts down when I am driving at low speeds while the brake is applied. I personally feel unsafe driving the car, because I am not sure if the issue will worsen and the vehicle will lose power while it being driven at higer speeds and public roasds. I have a servicing appointment scheduled my with Hyundai dealership for 11/11/2022 (this message is dated 11/2/2022). Honestly, I am very concerned the problem will worsen. I hope the dealership will be able to reproduce and rectify the issue. I have opened a case with Hyundai USA in this regard as well. I am not sure what specific system is causing the above warning lights and warnings to appear, or causing the vehicle to lose power while being driven at low speeds with the brake applied, but the vehicle would defintely be available for further inspection if needed.

64 Power Train problem of the 2018 Hyundai Kona

Failure Date: 08/29/2022

65 Power Train problem of the 2022 Hyundai Kona

Failure Date: 08/16/2022

Was driving on the freeway when lost all power when the gas pedal was pushed no power then the rpms would shoot to 7000 was able to get off the freeway the check came on had the car towed to the dealership after waiting 2 weeks was told the transmission needed to be replaced this was on a 2022 Hyundai Kona with only 7000 miles on it.

66 Power Train problem of the 2022 Hyundai Kona

Failure Date: 07/14/2022

Around 8,000 miles, mid-drive my check engine light came on and immediately the ability to speed up became very shotty. I have a 2022 Kona n-line. I could put my foot on the floor and it would take forever to get up to speed if at all. It was very here and there and seemed to have a mind of its own when it would do this. I’ve had it into the shop 5-6 different times since then to have it addressed and I’m still having issues with it. They replaced some valance, the solanoid, and just recently completely replaced the entire turbo system to try and fix the problem. It seems to have helped, but I still have this ongoing clicking sound since this started when the car downshifts it seems like, that has yet to be diagnosed. It’s not a normal car sound at all and nobody seems to even notice this sound I mention every time I take it in. I’ve read similar stories with this same model of car, yet there’s no active recall on it. I’ve been dealing with this for months and it’s aggravating the amount of time I’ve put in to trying to fix this. I travel for work which only makes things so much more frustrating to work around.

67 Power Train problem of the 2019 Hyundai Kona

Failure Date: 07/04/2022

Chatter or transmission slips from full stop only when engine reaches operating temperature. Does not seem to happen when cold. Vehicle was serviced by Hyundai dealership and said it could be a software fix. They updated software but still have problem. My brother was an auto mechanic and suggested the problem could be related to the transmission oil pump and or defective parts associated with clutch. .

68 Power Train problem of the 2020 Hyundai Kona

Failure Date: 06/18/2022

After driving the car for several hours, I arrived at my destination and as I was parking the vehicle, it would not move when put in reverse. I received a message on the dashboard that said, “transmission problem detected. ” I had the car towed the nearest Hyundai dealer. They diagnosed the issue as a transmission failure. They ordered and replaced the transmission with a rebuilt unit under warranty. I picked up the vehicle approximately 3 weeks later when the repair was completed. I drove the vehicle for 1 week before a similar problem occurred. While driving the vehicle, I received a warning message on the dashboard and the vehicle stopped on the road. The symptom of this subsequent failure was that the vehicle could not go over 2-3 mph. I had the vehicle towed to the nearest Hyundai dealer approximately 10 days ago. It is currently sitting in the dealer's lot waiting for them to "get around to check it".

69 Power Train problem of the 2022 Hyundai Kona

Failure Date: 06/10/2022

While at a stop light, the engine of my 2022 Kona died. No warning lights came on prior. It just died in the middle of the street. Then took several minutes and several tries to get the car to restart. Accelerator didn’t work at first either. Driving on highway warning light for tire pressure came on. Diagnostics said everything was fine. Then the warning light turned off. More and more frequent trouble accelerating onto highway. Car-play does not stay connected. Often doesn’t connect at all. Car dying in the middle of the street, not accelerating onto the highway was extremely frightening and I felt very lucky that it didn’t cause an accident, or worse. I have contacted my dealership about the issues and was told that I could have an appointment in 2 months! they don’t care about the safety of the people driving their cars and, clearly, they no longer care about the quality of their cars. As far as the carplay goes, they looked at the screen and then didn’t fix a thing. It still isn’t working properly. This is my second Hyundai and the quality has really diminished over the years and the problems have increased exponentially. The car dying while driving and accelerator not working properly has now happened several times. Today was only the most recent.

70 Power Train problem of the 2021 Hyundai Kona

Failure Date: 05/05/2022

When slowing down to a stop and im not completely stopped and then step on the gas the vehicle makes a winding noise and has no transmission engagement for several seconds so if im in s turning lane or even going forward when a street light turn green, there's been dozens of times where this happened and I need to let off the gas pedal slowing me down while e everyone else is gaining speed making them to jam on their breaks. I let the dealership know and their answer was just come to a complete stop, I was like during a green light? the other thing everyday I drive it the blind spot warning lights keep turning on even when theres no one around me and now I had the low tire pressure light turning on then off when the tires are completely inflated.
