When picking up my children from daycare, my 2024 Palisade (37k miles) would not shift into park. It was stuck in the reverse position. It would not shift to any drive, park, or neutral. Even in the reverse position, the car would not move. I applied the emergency brake and had to turn the car off without placing it in park. When I restarted the car, and place it in reverse, the engine made clunking noise. The dash said "shifting malfunction. Service immediately".
1. The exact component that failed is unknown at this time. The fire appeared to originate in the driver-side front area of the engine compartment near the headlight. Prior to the fire the vehicle experienced engine shaking and a check engine light. The vehicle has been towed to a Hyundai dealership and is available for inspection by insurance investigators, the manufacturer, or safety investigators upon request. 2. The vehicle caught fire while it was being operated on a public roadway shortly after leaving our residence. Flames were visible from the engine compartment within minutes of driving. This created an immediate safety risk to the occupants of the vehicle and to other motorists because the fire occurred suddenly while the vehicle was in motion. 3. The problem has not been reproduced. The vehicle was towed to a Hyundai dealership following the fire incident and is awaiting inspection. The vehicle is a total loss. 4. The vehicle has been inspected by a tow operator and insurance representatives after the fire incident. The vehicle is currently located at a Hyundai dealership and may be inspected by the manufacturer or investigators if requested. 5. Yes. Prior to the fire the check engine warning light illuminated and the engine began shaking while the vehicle was being driven. Within moments of these symptoms a loud popping sound was heard from the front driver-side engine compartment area, followed by visible flames.
On January 12, 2026, the vehicle shut off twice during the same trip while driving in traffic. All dashboard warning lights illuminated, the tachometer spiked, rpm readings did not correspond, the gear selector became unresponsive, and the vehicle lost propulsion while in motion. On February 15, 2026, the vehicle shut off again while driving under similar conditions. The vehicle was taken to a Hyundai dealership for diagnosis. The battery failed a load test and was replaced. According to the repair order narrative, after the battery replacement, the stall condition recurred during dealership testing. Multiple extended road tests and datalogging were later performed. The dealership has stated they are unable to re-replicate the condition and that no active diagnostic codes are present. The vehicle has experienced multiple loss-of-power events while in motion. An intermittent stall while driving presents a significant safety hazard, particularly in traffic conditions. The root cause has not been definitively identified.
Component/system: engine — specifically the engine valve springs and related components. Description of what happened: while driving, the vehicle began to shake violently, and the check engine light came on. At times, the vehicle loses power and shuts off completely, then restarts and drives normally for a short period before the issue returns. It feels and sounds like the engine is about to fall out. These symptoms match the description in Hyundai safety recall 255 for the 2024 Palisade (fractured engine valve springs that can cause engine failure, loss of power, and fire risk). Safety risk: the sudden loss of power and engine shaking put my safety and the safety of others at risk, especially while driving in traffic or at higher speeds. The problem could lead to a crash or engine fire if the valve springs fracture or the engine block is damaged. Inspection/confirmation: the problem has not yet been officially confirmed by a dealer, but Hyundai stated that my VIN is not included in the recall, even though my vehicle shows the same symptoms and falls within the recall’s production timeframe. Prior warnings or messages: the check engine light comes on when the vehicle starts shaking, then goes off after the vehicle stops or restarts. The issue has occurred multiple times, most recently in early October 2025. Additional notes: the vehicle is a 2024 Hyundai Palisade, and the issue began about 5 days ago. The symptoms are consistent with fractured valve springs as described in the recall. I am requesting investigation and inclusion of my VIN in this recall.
1. What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? multiple safety-critical systems have failed repeatedly, including: •engine (multiple shutdowns while vehicle was in motion) •automated emergency braking (aeb) (activating without cause while reversing) •brake pedal (intermittently unresponsive with audible rattling) •hvac (leaking fluid into the passenger-side floorboard) yes, the vehicle is currently with the dealership (stamford Hyundai, CT) and is available for inspection. 2. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? • the engine has shut off without warning while the vehicle was in motion, including in traffic, creating the potential for rear-end collisions. • the emergency brake has slammed on while reversing, without any obstacles present, risking whiplash and collisions with pedestrians or nearby objects. • the brake pedal becomes unresponsive, with a loose/rattling sensation, making it difficult to slow or stop the vehicle safely. • the hvac leak creates slippery floor conditions, posing a secondary risk for occupants during ingress/egress. 3. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? the dealership (stamford Hyundai) acknowledged some issues but stated they were unable to replicate all of them. However, the brake pedal defect is consistently reproducible and occurs daily. Multiple videos and logs have been submitted to Hyundai’s consumer affairs team. 4. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? the vehicle is currently under inspection by stamford Hyundai. Hyundai consumer affairs (case managers noorpreet and taruni) have been involved and have reviewed videos and documentation. No inspections by police or insurance. 5. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? no.
Engine fire caused by ac compressor. On 09/28/24, at 1700 miles and in the parking lot of a restaurant, smoke suddenly began filling the cabin and when I looked out the window the entire car's front was engulfed in a gray smoke. The overpowering smell was of burning wire insulation, plastic, and rubber. I immediately shut the car off, popped the hood, and was ready to run into the restaurant for a fire extinguisher when I noticed the large cloud of smoke was dissipating, but the heat was still incredibly extreme and a good amount of smoke was still pouring from the engine. My sister-in-law entered the car to retrieve her purse, and her eyes instantly started watering and she had a headache for several days. She is still complaining of her chest burning. After calling roadside, the aaa driver stated the car really smelled badly burned, and hauled the car off to the dealer of purchase. The fire was on 09/28/24 (a Saturday), and on Monday, 09/30/24, I submitted what took place to Hyundai. This is when the fraud started and Hyundai, with the help of the dealer, have purposely done everything possible to conceal the fire. I have full details of this fraud, and it's simply shocking. I am awaiting information regarding the restaurant's video recordings.

This complaint is in regards to recall 255 to address a condition involving the engine valve spring(s). Hyundai leased us a Palisade under this recall without informing us about the recall until after we had signed the lease paperwork. We were told there was a stop sale on the car when we went to pick it up the next day and we were not allowed to drive it off the lot. We have been without our car for over 9 weeks due to Hyundai not resolving this recall in a timely manner. No definitive update has been provided on when this recall will be resolved and when we will get our leased car.

I called the manufacturer twice about the recall 255. I feel usafe driving the vehicle after reading the recall report and cases. I called the dealership it was purchased from twice also and just got brushed off. Hyundai customer care put me on hold and hung up. I spent over $56,000 on this vehicle and expect better than this.
