Gas is purging from the top of the fuel pump.
What happened: while driving in montana on September 21, 2025, the cabin suddenly filled with gasoline fumes and the accelerator pedal stopped responding. After pulling over, flames erupted from under the hood and the vehicle was completely destroyed within minutes. The passenger-side door could not be opened from the inside at first, delaying escape and creating a serious safety risk. No warning lights or messages appeared before or during the fire. (1) while driving, gasoline suddenly filled the cabin and the accelerator pedal stopped responding. Within seconds, the vehicle caught fire. The cause appears related to the fuel system, and possibly the abs module. The vehicle was completely destroyed but remains available for inspection in a private tow lot. (2) the fire spread extremely quickly. Both occupants were nearly trapped inside when the passenger-side door would not open from the inside, delaying escape. The vehicle burned on the shoulder of a busy highway in montana, posing danger to us and to surrounding motorists. (3) not after this fire, but a similar problem occurred in 2023 when gasoline filled the cabin and caused the engine to stall. At that time, Hyundai replaced the engine under warranty. (4) no. The vehicle has not yet been inspected by the manufacturer, police, or insurance. It is secured in a private tow lot and is available for inspection. (5) no. There were no warnings at all before or during the failure. Even as gasoline filled the cabin and the vehicle caught fire, the check engine light stayed off and no alerts appeared.
The engine has been running rough for awhile and emissions light came on. My car was having problems accelerating, 2 years ago the light came on but didn’t stay on so the dealer couldn’t diagnose problem.
Twice in the last year the high pressure fuel line has cracked while I was driving and started spraying gas all over the engine bay.
My 2014 Hyundai sonata is subject to the recall campaign for the 2. 0l and 2. 4l gasoline direct injection (gdi) engines. Since June 24, 2024, the vehicle has exhibited multiple issues: 1. Check engine light: the check engine light is continuously on and blinking, signaling that the vehicle is unsafe to drive. Diagnostic codes retrieved include p0140 (O2 circuit), p0172 (system too rich), and p0126 (knock sensor circuit). While the p0126 code pertains to the knock sensor, there has been no definitive diagnosis to determine if the issue is isolated to the sensor or indicative of a deeper engine problem. 2. Engine power issue: the car experiences jolts and kicks back during acceleration, along with intermittent lack of power. Furthermore, an independent mechanic performed some tests on the engine, determining that it runs too rich. After the second white smoke through exhaust incident, the vehicle struggles, and often does not reach, 60 mph; aligning with "reduced power and/or hesitation" (case #2) in the recall campaign. 3. Exhaust smoke: on two separate occasions, within a month, white smoke has been observed exiting the exhaust. Engine oil has been below 3/5 empty each time. No oil leak found; must be exiting through exhaust. Despite qualifying for the recall, the Hyundai colorado springs dealer has refused to inspect or replace the engine as required. These ongoing issues pose significant safety risks, including the potential for unexpected engine failure and loss of power while driving.
I recently, experienced a sudden and alarming incident with my car. Out of nowhere, the car began leaking gas, which resulted in a fire. Prior to this incident, the car was in perfect working condition, and there were no signs of any issues or malfunctions. It was a completely unexpected and unfortunate event that posed a significant danger. The vehicle was towed to Hyundai dealership of myrtle beach, SC in August. The service agent explained that the vehicle technician would diagnosed the issue that she would call me back with plans and pricing. She shortly called back and stated that the diagnosis was a fuel line and that it needed to be replaced, that the part was approx. $200. 00 for the part and after labor totaling approx. $1025. This was agreed and plans were made for me to pick my vehicle up by 3:00pm. She later called back and stated that the fuel pump was replaced but that the car was still leaking gas and would result in more diagnosis and repair fees up to $6,000 or more. I questioned the original diagnosis and she explained she would have to hand the matter over to management. I spoke with mgt. Several times on the repair and mis diagnosis who claims it was not their fault and that they found hidden damage that the fire caused. Since then I have been told I would get some type of help and that he has written a letter to coorp. And received a response that they were sending an inspector out to look at my car. It has been over 60 days now without my vehicle and they have explained that they have reached out to Hyundai corporation and submitted a notice for recall or help with this matter and no response yet.
Car not shifting correctly. No power. Could not gain speed to merge into traffic. Was intermittent for months finally the engine light came on. My mechanics diagnostic showed it was the turbo charger. There is a service bulletin 22-22-em-004h.
Car would not shift. Could not increase speed. This occurred intermittently and gradually got worse.
On june2 2023 I was driving on i75 north to wesley chapel, pasco exit ramp 273 I and granddaughter were left on highway no emergency lights nothing. My SUV just shut down just no warning no lights no noise huge smell of chemical burn when my daughter and the road ranger arrived they notice the bad smell at engine like chemical very bad. There was ni emergency lights, rpms were not working I notice ut dropped down, a tractor trailer wad seconds inches on my SUV. I did a sudden sharp turn steering column so I can get the SUV to glide into the triangular divider with the exit was for me to get off so we were stuck I 75 north in between pasco exit to 73 that's where my SUV broke down. No warning nothing now which is November 2023 my car still not running I had a recall dates but I became ill now ill now I have to find out I can get my car fixed. When I purchase the car several months later I noticed the abs lights were on but abs breaks the slope and the traction all those lights go on emergency break light goes on while I drive but that did not happen during the time that I was driving on the i75 north highway. I had my granddaughter who was 9 years old at the time. We could have been hit. SUV was locked down and said goodbye it was like someone controlling my SUV. SUV was zzz like gliding I have a full tank of gas. I had to tow it after waiting 8 hours no lights on SUV but I also tried to have the battery tested or started it'll start but the key fob will not work. Its confused. I'm very very upset I paid off my SUV, had one recall after I bought and now again. This time SUV died no warning nothing I feel courtesy Hyundai should tow my SUV, recall check, courtesy check and my two key fobs. This I should not have to feel unsafe in my SUV always wondering will this happen again and will I be a fatal driver hoping I don't have any of my grandchildren nor my adult kids or any human being.
The engine was replaced under a recall related to an engine knock code. About two weeks later, the vehicle lost all power while driving. The dealership confirmed a failure in the high-pressure fuel line and that the turbo had failed at the same time. The same visit revealed oil leaks, and shortly after, the vehicle began emitting white and black smoke. Their technician stated the failures were due to “consequential damage from engine failure. ” the problems have continued to return, and I’ve been told the vehicle is unsafe to drive. Hyundai is now refusing to fully cover the cost of repair, offering only 15% off, despite all of the damage being directly linked to the replacement engine. I transport children in this vehicle. My safety and theirs have been at risk multiple times because of these unresolved and ongoing failures.
There was a recall on my vehicle for the knock sensor. In 04/2019 this was fixed at the stockton, CA. Dealership. My car only has 69,654 miles on it. On 01/14/2023 my check engine light came on and my car started sputtering and cutting out. I took it back to the dealership first thing today, 01/16/2023. They said the knock sensor is out and will cost me $995. 00 to fix. They said the part that was replaced 4/2019 only has a one year guarantee. I believe this is a poor quality part or vehicle defect.
While driving normally, suddenly the vehicle will jolt and the rpms go down to zero despite the vehicle still moving. Even with the gas pedal pushed down to the floor, and being able to hear the engine 'vrooming', the vehicle will not increase speed. It is extremely dangerous to not be able to speed up when on a highway or interstate. The check engine light does not come on, the diagnostic at the dealership does not throw any codes and the issue is intermittent so no one knows how to fix it since they can't duplicate the problem on demand. Usually turning the car off and on will 'fix' the problem until it happens again out of nowhere. The vehicle is extremely unsafe; this has been happening on and off for months. We do have videos of this occurring; no one at the dealership or any friends who are mechanics have any idea of what is wrong.
Car caught fire while driving.
At highway speed during moving to exit ramp car stalled and luckily coasted to safety without an accident but was very scary and could have ended badly. Restarted car and all seems to be working fine currently but worried it will happen again, this is the first time. No engine codes and had it checked with a odb2 scanner.
The dealer has confirmed that my 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe has an oil consumption issue. This results in the car randomly losing power from the accelerator while driving. You can push the accelerator all the way down to the floor and there is no power in the engine. The car then slows down drastically which results in potential car crashes from behind since there is no warning to the driver or to drivers of other cars. My car started having this issue in July 2021 when it had about 129,000 miles on it. It took Hyundai until late 2022 to determine the issue and deny responsibility for it. The attached documents do not include the multiple times that I had to bring the car in every 1000 miles to check the oil (they didn't document that). They said it would cost me $21,575 to fix the engine which is almost as much as a new car would cost! I have seen many complaints online about this same issue happening with other car owners and I feel that Hyundai should be held responsible for correcting this known safety issue. I was planning to drive this car until 200,000 miles which would be at least another 3-4 years before I had to replace it. At this point I am having to add a quart of oil every 500 miles and hope that the engine doesn't seize up and cause an accident.
The engine started knocking like a rod maybe . It was sitting over night no previous issues and when I started it that was the noise it was making . Just bought the car in July of 2020.
Excessive oil consumption. Currently uses 1. 2 quarts per 1,000 miles.
It was indicated by a letter from Hyundai motor America that the brake system on this car can possibly react to a electrical short in the anti-lock brake system, causing a fire within the engine compartment. Therefore a recall was initiated, but a solution for repair, for the past 4 months, is not yet available. It is my opinion that a car with this condition is not safe to drive and therefore Hyundai should furnish a loner car for the period it takes to make a safety repair or replace the car.
Car loses pressure car down shifts very hard and jerks non stop while driving.
Engine 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe limited. 3. 3l 6 cyl fwd. I own this vehicle. I recently read about the class action suits against kia and Hyundai regarding engine failures and fires. . Read more...
I am the perspective buyer of this used car currently at a dealer for sale. Carfax report indicates two recalls on the car. On 2/17/20, salesperson called Hyundai inc about the fuel leak recall being fixed if I purchase the car first and then take the car to a Hyundai dealership to fix the recall. Is this proper procedure in purchasing a used car? the car is currently being offered for sale at a savannah, GA, critz mercedez dealership. Salesperson provided a carfax report that indicated recent service on the car the dealership provided. However, the described recall had not been remedied which I brought it to the attention of the salesperson who then called a Hyundai dealership. I was told Hyundai would fix the issue and extend the warranty another 40,000 miles. Should I be concerned about buying this car based on the salesperson requiring purchase first before the car is fixed?.
My vehicle started running hot, the coils were replaced, it continued to run hot periodically, then I had to keep putting water in radiator reserve container and made this bubbling noise when I was driving or stopped with the car running. The starter was replaced. My vehicle became difficult to crank and eventually the engine shut down and it wouldn't crank at all.
I was driving down the road about a week after the dealer supposedly fixed two recalls with the engine on my 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe sport base. Suddenly, and without any audible warning, my ecm light came on and my vehicle starting lunging and lurching forward like it was about to stall. I pulled over and read the manual, and it noted that it was the ecm sensor and that I should immediately drive the vehicle to the dealership, so I did. Driving there, I was only able to maintain a speed of 60 mph on the interstate, which put me and my 8 -year-old daughter in danger from faster-driving cars, especially since it was a torrential downpour. Any time I stopped or slowed down, the engine would shutter like it was about to stall and then would get better just past 10-20 mph until I approached 60 again, where it would not accelerate again. When I got to the dealership, they immediately knew the problem and ordered a knock sensor harness. However, in reading the variety of lawsuits, issues, and service campaigns, it appears as though Hyundai is knowingly allowing people to continue driving cars they know are defective, thus putting us and our children's lives in jeopardy. These vehicles need to be recalled and have all of the engines and related parts replaced, or they need to buy the vehicles back at original msrp so we can purchase a functional, safer vehicle.
My 2014 Santa Fe sport has a strong gasoline odor in the cabin but it can also be smelled outside the car. The smell is the highest when the car is turned off and sits for a short time. The odor is so strong that the service tech had to get out of the car so the odor could dissipate. I have had it to the dealer twice to be looked at and they could not find an issue. They definitely could smell the odor when it was dropped off. They drove it for a short distance but I don't believe it was far enough for the problem to show up. This only seems to happen when the temperature is about 90 degrees or hotter. It has not been an issue since the temperatures have cooled down and it was not an issue when I bought it December 2017. It was real bad at times last summer.
After driving the vehicle 15 miles on the highway, we drove on residential street for about 1. 5 miles. As I was turning into a parking structure the engine stopped and the vehicle lost power. I glided the vehicle to a red zone no parking area on the street and stopped the vehicle. Black smoke quickly appeared from under the hood and flames quickly appeared. The front of the vehicle soon became engulfed in flames shooting 4-6 feet high. The fire department arrived and sprayed the front of the vehicle with a foam fire retardant. Then they cut the hood latch and open the hood. The entire engine compartment, windshield and the front passenger area were completely destroyed. The vehicle was melted to the street and the tow driver had to smash it loose.
Vehicle stalls while sitting idling waiting at stop lights problem is intermittent and unpredictable. Engine shutters while idling as well. Vehicle loses ability to accelerate when this occurs requiring the driver to put the vehicle in park, turn the engine off, then restart the vehicle. Safety hazard in busy traffic. Additional issues with slippage sounds from the axels when turning corners. Problem may be linked to other open recalls involving manufacturer reported machine errors during the manufacturing process that causes premature bearing wear within the engine. The noted safety risk on other VIN numbered models within the same class is that it may cause the vehicle to stall, increasing the risk of a crash. This vehichle was just purchased from carmax virginia three days ago. Issue was not obvious at the time of purchase. There were no open recalls for this VIN number at the time sale was made, but issue is quite present at 50,000 miles and I have contacted carmax to inform them of the issue. This particular problem seems consistent with all models of Hyundai manufactured around 2014. A national recall of the entire line should be considered to alert consumers and avoid unwanted purchases and or damaging accidents.
I have 2014 Santa Fe sport with 2. 4 engine, and have a serious hesitation problem. It happens quite often when waiting at light to make a left turn. When traffic allows me to go, the car will start the turn then it feels like the engine dies for about 2 or 3 seconds then kicks in and I am able to complete the turn. This is very scary when there is traffic coming at me. I am very worry that one day I will have an accident because of the serious hesitation problem. It also hesitates it when driving with the flow of traffic and when I want to speed up little bit, it does not accelerate but kinda bogges down. I have to push the gas peddle down fast and then let it up and then I can accelerate to the speed I wanted to go. I have taken the car to the dealer 2 times and they could not solve the this problem.
Car ceases to accelerate as you turn a corner; also sometimes as you accelerate from a stop even though the gas pedal is in the same position as when you started. It will then jump as though you had floored the pedal. The lack of acceleration nearly caused an accident recently when making a left turn; the car following me nearly rear-ended me after I first started to accelerate and then my car slowed when the acceleration stopped. When it all of a sudden "kicked in", I nearly rea-rended the car in front of me.
While driving home, my vehicle began to make clunking noises, while in the process of exiting the highway, for safety reasons, the car cut off on the exit ramp. Before attempting to restart the vehicle; a passerby shouted that the vehicle was no fire. Upon exiting the vehicle the police were on the scene and extinguished the fire. The vehicle was then towed to a local body shop to await a tow to my place of residence.
Purchased new 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe in August, 2014 with 8 miles on odometer. On December, 2014 the check engine light came on. I took it to dealer service center immediately. All tests came back-no cause found. Possible purge valve sticking. Mechanic sprayed lubricate. Engine light shut off. On February 17, 2016 engine light came on and interior beep sounded after starting vehicle. I called dealer service center for appointment. Vehicle has 2,200 miles. I repeat 2,200 miles.
Previously reported to dealer that car often stalled or hesitated when accelerating after a stop or very slow forward motion. This has ended up in numerous hesitations and near accidents when entering into traffic. On Friday, 1/29/16 while exiting from the 9th tier of a parking garage the hesitation happened on all 9 tiers as I rounded the corner to the next tier and began to accelerate. I have an appointment again with the dealer on 2/19/16 and will report further after that but suspect I will get the same message that they "could find nothing wrong".
Purchased new , March '14. In for periodic service 2-22-16 reported occasional hesitation of 1 to 2 seconds after a stop or slow forward motion. The dealer put the car on diagnostic machines. "no problem. " revisited the dealer explicitly for the same problem on 3-7-16. But now, in addition to the momentary lags, there had been a couple incidents of longer lags of 5 to 10 seconds. Again, the service report was written up with "no problem". Now I'm making a 3rd appointment because the hesitation is happening more frequently and I've had the long count lags (10 secs or longer) happen twice in the last 2 weeks. The problem has now moved from being an irritant to being life threatening. Incidents happen on streets and highways when entering and crossing traffic. Very unsafe, and nerve rattling. Please refer to NHTSA incident # 10836613 & 1082431.
Occasionally right after I fill the car with gas there is an overpowering odor of gas inside the car for a day or so. I live in new jersey, where self-service is not allowed, and sometimes they fill it to the absolute limit, which may be the cause. Regardless, this is terribly unsafe because gasoline fumes are toxic. The odor is not from a little spillage on the body of the car, from the hose at the gas station. It is inside the car, and very strong. The date below is only the most recent date. This has happened several times.
I purchased a new car, on Feb. 1, 2014. The malfunction lamp on the dashboard was lighted up in 1 month. My car was repaired from my dealership several times but the problems are not cleared yet. At last, the very serious problem was happened on Apr. 19. I stepped down fully on the gas pedal on the highway, but my car was not changed in speed. The rpm and speed meter were not changed when I stepped on the pedal perfectly to the end. The staff in service center said that the problem came from the right and left side bolt of high-pressure pump. The right hand side bolt had come apart and left hand side bolt was loose. They didn't know that why this problem was happened. That's my all serious story!.
