1 Steering problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2025

My steering would work while I was driving with my kids in the car, my breaks were barely working, the hood started smoking and something under the hood in the engine caught on fire, there was a horrible smell when I was breaking and the breaks would jolt. The engine and cooling was not turning off even with my key taken out, the fan engine was running nonstop no matter what, smoking etc.

2 Steering problem

Failure Date: 02/17/2025

This model of Santa Fe has a defective steering column. The car rattles at the base of the steering column at the base of the steering wheel in the floor by your feet. When you go over 70 it rattles.

3 Steering problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2025

The vehicle is making a loud clunking noise in the steering column when driving down the road. It is veering all over the road and when I hit a bump it’s very bad. It’s difficult to keep in the lane. I brought it to my mechanic who said it was most likely the electronic steering motor assembly. He said he would not drive it in its current condition. Hyundai themselves said that it would be dangerous to operate. On the complaint website I was looking on there was around 50 complaints that have been reported to the NHTSA already and the website said it would also be very dangerous to drive.

4 Steering problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2024

I drive a 2014 sante fe sport. I noticed a clicking noise when turning the steering wheel. Initially, I heard it once in a while. I thought it was a one-time event. The clicking noise is more constant, when making a turn while the car is in motion. Sometimes the steering wheel feels 'loose' or uncontrollable. It seems to be an issue with the steering coupler. It seems as this is a safety concern for me and others while driving.

5 Steering problem

Failure Date: 06/29/2023

The contact owns a 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe. The contact stated that the abs warning light, the steering warning light, and the hill descent control warning light were illuminated. The dealer was notified of the failure, but the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 23v651000 (service brakes, hydraulic) which he related to the failure; however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 90,000.

6 Steering problem

Failure Date: 05/06/2023

Steering has clicking noise when turning. I believe this is related to the mdps (motor driven power steering) flexible rubber coupler. Similar issue exists for certain model of Hyundai sonata and elantra, which resulted in extended warranty. Https://static. Nhtsa. Gov/odi/tsbs/2017/mc-10110926-9999. Pdf I believe the issue is the same part that Hyundai offered extended warranty on. I feel excessive vibration on the steering wheel during 70mph speed on a highway and going over bumps. I feel unsafe driving my 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe sport with this issue. Please investigate. Thanks!.

7 Steering problem

Failure Date: 03/07/2023

I received a notice of recall on the abs for my Hyundai Santa Fe 2014 sport. My abs light recently illuminated, I went to the Hyundai site to make an appt. I was given one a week out, while waiting for the appt my brake lights wouldn’t turn off unless I disconnected the battery. I took the vehicle to the dealership in brevard FL, the guy kept trying to upsell me $180 for diagnostics and that I had to pay it for every light on. Which I explained had all happened since the abs light. I was there for 4 hours and I asked him to fix the abs he didn’t said he didn’t have time and I had to reschedule. I had to wait another week, I took it to a friend who is a certified mechanic. He put it on his diagnostic computer and it kept coming back with abs code. Said he couldn’t do the brakes until that was fixed. Went back this week, didn’t ask me anything when I pulled in, not even an hour later said my vehicle was done come get it. He handed me a quote of $1300 for brakes. I asked if I paid that would it fix the abs he said no, but ur vehicle is not safe to drive. I explained I know, it wasn’t safe last week and you didn’t help me. I was able to get my vehicle to nearby brake-shop. I explained everything that happen, they also ran diagnostics and said it was abs that they couldn’t fix it either until the dealership fixed the abs. Now my vehicle is stuck at brake-shop and I just started a new job and have already had to miss two days work. I am completely dumbfounded as to why I am getting the run around and no one wants to help. I deplore having to complain, however it feels as though there is no more customer service/satisfaction.

8 Steering problem

Failure Date: 08/09/2022

I have a 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe sport that burns an exsessive amounts of oil. I do alot of driving maybe around 36 miles a day. Every two weeks another oil change is needed. Bought this vechle in 2017 with only 20,000 miles on it the everytime I goes to jiffy lube it shows that the engine was supposed to be replaced. There has been multiple problems with this vechile since day one of having it. I never gotten a notice about this information. Hyundai has been called numerous of times concerning this matter. The engine was never replaced oil still burning really fast. Its causing a lot of time and money. I dont think any of the problems were taken care of.

9 Steering problem

Failure Date: 06/12/2022

I have a steering coupler failure on a 2014 Santa Fe with 67k miles. Hyundai has already recalled the steering coupler in the elantra and sonata models, however this same part is used across multiple models including the Santa Fe and azera. My family is forced to replace this on a 2014 Santa Fe and 2013 azera. The defective part causes a heavy clunking in the steering column which could lead to an accident. Below is the recall notice. Https://autoservice. Hyundaiusa. Com/txx7/micrositetemplate/micrositetemplatevinvalidate/2687 the part being replaced is below, which as you can see is across multiple models. Mdps flexible coupling replacement 56315- 2k000-fff applicable vehicles: 2010~2014 sonata (yfa), 2011~2014 sonata hybrid (yf hev) 2007~2017 elantra (hd, MD/ud), 2009~2012 elantra touring (fd), 2013~2014 elantra gt (gd), 2013~2014 elantra coupe (jk) 2013~2018 Santa Fe (nc) 2012~2017 azera (hg) 2012~2017 veloster (fs) I wanted to report this to ensure that the government agency responsible knows that this part is used in more than 2 models. This is a common complaint against Hyundai if you read online about their complaints. It is unsafe and unfair for other models to not be included in this recall.

10 Steering problem

Failure Date: 09/09/2021

Vehicle had a steering coupler failure at 37766 miles. It is out of warranty, but other models with the same design have been granted an extended 100000 miles/10 year coverage for steering coupler replacement.

11 Steering problem

Failure Date: 05/23/2021

The steering column makes a loud clicking noise - read online an several youtube videos that there is a defective part in the steering unit on a lot of these. Steering is very big part of control especially with kids in the car I think there should be a recall to fix the part in hyaundia that is clicking in all the steering very serious problem because it is how u control the car.

12 Steering problem

Failure Date: 03/29/2021

While driving up a steep winding road my car began making a fluttering noise like a paddleboat. There was a lot of play in the steering wheel with a small squeak to only the left, in the play of the steering wheel. The dealership has let me know I need to replace the steering shaft. What actually makes the steering shaft go out, isn't that a component that has a long life? the noise was more intense driving up the road than going down. As reached a city level the drumming noise was still happening, but inconsistent.

13 Steering problem

15 Steering problem

Failure Date: 12/12/2020

All incidents, no accidents[thannk god!] I drive a 2014 sante fe sport. I noticed a clicking noise when turning the steering wheel. Initially, I heard it once in a while. I thought it was a one time noise. The clicking noise is more constant, when making a turn while the car is in motion. Sometimes the steering wheel feels 'loose' or uncontrollable. I believe it is the steering wheel or coupler. I am concerned for my safety and other drivers. Hearing this clicking constantly, sounds like the steering wheel is going to break. It is annoying! I am not comfortable driving this vehicle. I have no other means of transportation. I looked on the internet. I saw where customers have listed this complaint. There was a recall for 2018. The recall was shown as 173. This did not include my year, 2014. There was no recall shown. . Read more...

18 Steering problem

Failure Date: 08/08/2019

Car steering completely gave out without warning, while the car was running. Luckily I was parked, but there was no warning, it just stopped working.

19 Steering problem

Failure Date: 06/13/2019

Vehicle engine seized in the middle of the road with no warning or indication that it was about to happen. My 3 and 4 year old were with me as we were stuck in the middle of the road, thankfully no oncoming traffic at the time due to the light being red. This is the second time I have had a known issue that was recalled by Hyundai but did not include my VIN number. I also had trouble with my steering wheel and called about it and it was not covered because my VIN was not included in the recall. Hyundai you need to seriously take a closer look at your process for handling these issues when there are obviously many vehicles outside of your recalls that are experiencing the exact same issue. People's lives are at stake. I was literally in the process of making a turn and could not complete the turn which left me dead smack in the middle of the road. Had this been during heavier traffic times, I could have possibly been hit by oncoming traffic because of my car stalling in the middle of the road.

20 Steering problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2019

When turning, the vehicle makes a clunk sound. Had it inspected at Hyundai of wesley chapel and it was found to have an internal failure of steering rack gear assembly and now requires a replacement of the steering rack assembly. This is an ongoing issue with Hyundai, as the 2017 Santa Fe's were recalled for this issue.

The vehicle was taken to world Hyundai (877-340-8037, located at 5337 miller circle dr, matteson, IL 60443) where an unknown engine recall repair was performed earlier in the year. The dealer serviced the vehicle for one week and informed the contact to drive the vehicle for thirty days to allow the clicking to stop. The contact did not believe that the vehicle was repaired and did not retrieve the vehicle. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and the contact was not called back. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 69,000. The VIN was unknown.

23 Steering problem

Failure Date: 12/22/2018

2014 Hyundai Santa Fe sport- brake light/ abs light/ hill descent control light came on in vehicle and after a day or two never turned off. Took car to dealership and was asked to make appointment. The next day a triangle with exclamation point light turned on along with a steering wheel with exclamation point light and the steering wheel became loose at this time. Drove myself home and after parking I turned vehicle off but the engine continued to make humming noises like something was still running. Restarted car and then turned off engine again and the noise stopped. I went inside my house and less than 5 minutes later there was a loud banging on my front door- a neighbor that ran up to inform me my car was on fire. I completed regular maintenance on this vehicle and it only had 35,000 miles. Please look into this situation so that no others go through this devastating situation that I faced today.

24 Steering problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2018

Tl the contact owns a 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe. While driving 70 mph, the steering wheel shook and rattled violently. As a result, the contact had to drive below the speed limit. Murfreesboro Hyundai (2203 NW broad st, murfreesboro, TN 37129, (615) 898-0700) was contacted and advised the contact to call the manufacturer to see if the vehicle was included in a recall and could assist with repairs. 25 Steering problem

Failure Date: 10/21/2018

Incident occurred on I-65. My husband and I were traveling home from a quick road trip. While passing another vehicle at 75mph, our sante made a weird noise, then loud sound and went dead. My husband fought to control the car, barely avoided a possible fatal crash. We called Hyundai roadside assistance and was told they only tow 47 miles. The nearest dealer was 50 miles away. We were left stranded, no service or tow truck from Hyundai showed up. Had to call family to come get us (nearly 3 hours away). We had to rent a uhaul auto transport and truck to recover our car on the side of I-65, heading to our hometown, we were stranded in verbena, al. Hyundai finally towed car to dealership once in hometown, was told by service tech that our car had "catastrophic engine damage and a new engine has been ordered, at no charge, due to our car was part of the recall. Was told we "might" be reimbursed for our incurred expense of having to tow the car ourselves. We purchased the car brand new, with an added roadside assistance package, which we were assured we'd never be stranded, which proved a useless sales ploy. 3 disabled persons and a highway patrol officer had to manually load the car onto the auto transport, one of which fell on the road and cut their knee. Why is additional roadside assistance offered when the dealership neglected to inform us that there was only a 47 mile towing radius. We were assured that "we'd be covered no matter where we might travel. We have a rental, which resulted in us paying a deposit out of our own pocket, "that should be refunded upon return of the rental". Full reimbursement and or a new car should be offered, due to the catastrophic engine damage (the term the Hyundai service tech used) that occurred to our 2014 Santa Fe sport with less than 53,000 miles. Thanks Hyundai roadside assistance for leaving us stranded.

26 Steering problem

Failure Date: 08/06/2018

The car will not stay aligned. Every 1,000 miles or so, the steering gets wildly out of adjustment and causes the car to drift all over the road. It is frightening to drive, especially in dense traffic at highway speed. It is impossible to maintain a straight line with the car. At times, the steering wheel must be aimed far to the left to go straight. Moments later, with no warning, the car dives to the left and the wheel must be held to the right. straight on the steering wheel is never straight on the road. This condition is highly inconsistent and seems irreparable. The vehicle has been aligned 8+ times by different shops and it continues to reset itself back to this nearly undriceable condition. The first instance was at 4,100 miles. The vehicle now has 51,000 miles. The condition is the same regardless of the speed, road surface, road type, or crown in the roadway. You can hear many creaks and sounds and feel the body of the vehicle flexing significantly as you drive. It is my belief that there is a structural defect making the car unsafe to operate both for the steering and suspension symptoms and also regarding its crashworthiness.

27 Steering problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2017

The contact owns a 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe. While driving unknown speeds, the steering was unstable and the vehicle stalled without warning. The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 33,000.

28 Steering problem

Failure Date: 04/04/2017

Exactly 2,000 miles after my 60,000 mile warranty expired, my car experienced a failure of the air bag control module which also impacted steering, yaw/stability and other vehicle safety features. The warning lights came on while I was starting the vehicle but I encountered no issues when driving it 25 minutes to a dealership to have it checked out (fortunately). It took from 2 pm April 4 to 4 pm April 6 to get the necessary repairs done (the part had to be special ordered). It was not covered by either the expired 60,000 mile warranty or the extra ($1,500) 100,000 mile warranty (I was told that that warranty did not cover safety issues).

29 Steering problem

Failure Date: 03/28/2017

Driving and power steering went out, dash panel lights went haywire. I could barely turn the steering wheel to get the car off of the road. I am not at all sure my wife could have turned the wheel. Attempted to jump-start the car - not work. First time driving at 35 mph in a subdivision in al. Pulled over, would not start, towed to dealer who recharged battery and entire electrical system checked said it was fixed. Tried to jump-start the car and this did not work. Few weeks later exact same thing happened in ky. I was doing 63 mph on highway with 50 cubic yard coal trucks coming by. If happened to my wife I am very concerned as to a rather bad accident. Auto transmission locked up and could not get it out of gear. Tow people jimmied the shift to load on the tow truck. Vehicle towed to another dealer where battery replaced and entire electrical system checked said it was fixed. We bought the car new and have had three batteries in 2 years and 4 months. I do not let my wife drive the car except around town. I feel this is truly an accident waiting to happen. Do not know what caused the issue and apparently Hyundai does not know either.

30 Steering problem

Failure Date: 03/03/2017

When driving, the wheel sticks into what it thinks is center . We must use two hands to drive the car at all times and clutching the steering wheel is a must. When the wheel is in the center position you have to lightly jerk back and forth to keep it straight, even when changing lanes on the interstate. The vehicle drives a lot like a SUV with a really bad alignment, however it doesn't need one according to carmax. We are newly wrapped in a 30,000. 00 car loan financed by capital one and we are getting more fearful of this vehicle the more we drive it. We don't have as much of a problem within the city limits at 30 or below in speed, however anything above that is going to feel very noticeable. I have 29,000 miles on the vehicle and have had the vehicle since 2/23/2017. The vehicle was purchased from carmax, a reputable company in birmingham, alabama. The car is being financed through capital one credit. The 2014 Santa Fe is white, GLS, 3rd row, drive assist. We suspect that while the car has drive assist ability (especially in turns) that the vehicle isn't aware we aren't turning as we pull the steering wheel to keep it centered in the lane. Thus we are pushing the wheel left to right to balance out the wheel to keep the vehicle straight constantly. Example: driving on interstate 20 heading to the doctors office at uab kirklin clinic at 8:00 rush hour traffic. Trying to maintain the center position of the wheel while pulling the wheel left to right to keep it straight. The wheel seems to pull to one side or the other and while checking mirrors and for other cars before getting over in another lane, I could be in another lane without even realizing it. I am afraid a policeman will see me and think I am a drunk driver. I have driven off onto the shoulder of the road a few times by accident after looking for a second to check my speed or check my gas gauge.

31 Steering problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2016

I have a 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe sport awd. This is my 3rd Hyundai. I have really been impressed until now. My car wanders all over the road when driving over 50mph either on a road or interstate. I have to work hard to hold the wheel to keep the vehicle straight. The handling is awful I feel like my car is skating all over the road. Like I am driving on ice. The car is unsafe to drive. I have been to the dealership, had the alignment checked, had a new alignment performed, as well as replace the tires. This has not fixed the issue. I feel it is unsafe to put my 5 year old in the vehicle. I cannot keep the steering straight. What is Hyundai doing to fix this issue? I am making payments on a vehicle I feel is unsafe to drive and no one can tell me why?.

32 Steering problem

Failure Date: 10/15/2015

The contact owns a 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe sport. The contact stated while driving 10 mph and making a turn, he heard an abnormal cracking sound coming from the steering wheel. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a dealer, where it was diagnosed with the power steering needing to be replaced. The contact stated that the vehicle was repaired however, the failure recurred while turning. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 33,000.

33 Steering problem

Failure Date: 06/20/2015

6/20/2015 backed out of stall at costco, marysville, wa. Immediately loss of power steering and three alerts came on. There are known issues with this happening. . Read more...

34 Steering problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2015

Highway driving at speeds around and above 60mph the vehicle' steering requires constant correction to keep it within the lanes. The SUV randomly swerves in one direction or the other and requires quite a bit of effort to bring it back to center lane. The constant battle to keep the SUV centered in the lane causes arm fatigue over time. Passengers, especially in the back seat, could experience motion sickness due to the constant side-to-side corrections. Noticed the problem is worse on larger highways, 3-4 lanes wide. May be due to angle of roads for water run-off. This is not a one time incident, it is always this way. No problem whatsoever at lower speeds.

35 Steering problem

Failure Date: 04/18/2015

I was driving on the 405 freeway and I started noticing that the vehicle did not stay in its lane even though I wasn't moving the steering wheel, it veer to the right and left continuosly I had to keep my hands on the steering wheel in order to try to keep it straight, when I purchase this vehicle I did not notice the issue because I only drove it for a mile or two down the freeway, I headed home and that's when I notice the problem, to me this is a safety concern and I think that Hyundai should look into this issue before someone has an accident. I'll be bringing it back to the dealership to see if they are able to resolve the concern.
