I purchased this vehicle 05/05/2019 as a certified pre-owned vehicle from the dealership. I have kept regular maintenance on the car. Three same day of purchase, the engine quit as I was driving it. I was making a left hand turn and it quit while I was in the intersection. My children were in the car. Hyundai replaced the engine, but about a year and half later, that engine did the exact same thing. This time I was coming off the freeway. I can't imagine the possibilities if this had happened while on the freeway. Now, the engine is making the same sound as with the first two engines. I took it to Hyundai, and they claim it's normal. The car has issues where I will be trying to safely merge into traffic and it will hesitate. There are multiple intermittent issues that occur, but the scariest is knowing how the first two engines felt/ran and sounded prior to their failure, and once again experiencing those exact issues. How many times should an engine have to be replaced in a four year period? it is very likely that one of my children could be fatally injured depending on where we happen to be when this most recent engine fails, because it will - guaranteed. Online forums are full of thousands of people who purchased vehicles from Hyundai that have the exact same issue. No check engine warning. Just a rough sounding engine, and then it will just quit as they're driving. Something needs to be done. Lastly, June 18th, 2023 I had a collision with another vehicle. I collided with another vehicle, my front end to the other drivers driver's side. My air bags did not deploy. Nobody was injured, but I truly feel my airbags should have went off for the amount of damage to my front end. Pictures will be included.

I was driving down the highway when my vehicle shut off. After pulling off on the highway and opening the hood, there was a notice that the engine had overheated. Upon inspection, there was no oil nor any coolant left in the engine. I have records to demonstrate regular maintenance, and oil changes every 5000 miles.

Abs light, passenger air bag light and skid light came on. Passenger airbag light flashes whenever car is in drive.

Failure Date: 08/14/2023

Had oil changed July 5, 2023, Aug. 14 check engine light came on. Took it to shop and was told Hyundai vehicles are burning oil in the engine and the diagnostic code came back as catalytic convert and had to add oil. Have oil spots all over my drive so was told to check oil and make sure it's not low and see if light comes back on. Repair shop checked for recalls and found none for this car, yet. Daughter has 2013 kia rio with same problem for past couple of years. Why do recalls take so long?.

2017 Hyundai Santa Fe sport 2. 4l automatic, took the car in for recall service. The following recall services were completed: (23-01-014h-5), (23-01-004h), (20-01-006h), (#17-01-050), (17-01-002). Service completed on 07/25/23, car was in perfect working order prior to recall service. Picked car up from dealer on the afternoon of 07/25/23, drove about 5 miles home. Next day (07/26/23), drove car about 20 miles and engine light came on. Took back to dealership 07/26/23 at about 3pm, stated nothing they did would cause engine light to come on and wanted me to leave with vehicle without checking it. Said 8/1/23 would be the earliest the could look at it to even check the code. Refused to leave with car in that state so they did check the code and stated it was a catalytic converter code and that mine might be going out. Stated that nothing was wrong with my car prior to recall services. Then they asked if my engine light was on before I brought it in for the recall service, I stated no. Then they said it could be the engine software update reading something wrong and cleared code. Told me to drive vehicle and if it came on again to bring it back. Drove car home again which is about a 5 mile distance. Did not drive car next day (07/27/23. Drove car on 07/28/23 for about 20 minutes and the engine light came back on. Called the dealership and they stated they would call me back but never did. Called the national Hyundai customer service number and explained the situation. Gave me a claim number and stated a case manager would contact me in 3-5 days. Called the dealership again on 07/31/23, and left another message with the service person but they did not return my call again. Called on 8/1/23 and asked for the service manager who stated earliest they can look at my car again is 8/7/23. Have not been contacted by a case manager yet as of 8/1/23. Hyundai forams online clearly state other owners having same issue as mine after having the Hyundai software updates completed.

Hello. I don't know if this is even something you look into, but I wanted to see. Yesterday when I came home from work my oil light came on and all of my oil suddenly dumped in the driveway. I am thankful I was at home because this could have been a nightmare somewhere else. I had my car towed and was advised that the rear main seal needs replaced as well as the oil pan gasket. I don't know if this is a safety issue, but if my engine would have seized on the highway that could have been a nightmare. Oil maintenance has been at regular intervals. There was no warning until my light came on in the driveway and then the immediate dump of oil. I'm happy to answer any other questions. Thank you. Brooke.

On my 2017 Santa Fe equipped with a power lift gate, when the power struts start to fail, it is without warning and intermittent. The lift gate will fully open, then suddenly drop down about a foot before stopping striking the top of the head. At first the drop down would occur several seconds later when one was already under the lift gate and bump the head when moving back. This started about 2 months ago. Hyundai had to replace both power struts where the total job cost just over $1,700. 00. The part were $1,244. 08. Although I took a video of this with my cell phone, it is too large to email to my gmail or aol inbox. Eventually the lift gate could fail completely possible trapping a small person under same.

While driving down a California freeway, the sunroof of my wife's 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe sport exploded without warning. Glass rained down on my niece and nephew in the backseat and caused my wife to swerve a bit in surprise. Luckily there was no one else on the road and no one was hurt by the glass. She was not near anyone or anything, plus nothing fell into the backseat so we know that it wasn't anything that impacted the glass causing it to break. Upon further review, this is a problem with Hyundai vehicles and it looks like they are the subject of multiple class-action lawsuits for it. This is the second time something like this has happened. In 2016, my wife was leasing a sonata and the sunroof exploded unprovoked. The dealership took responsibility that time and one of the mechanics stated that it was "a known issue".

The engine on my car was consuming oil at a rapid rate. The dealer service department gave me the run around for many month. Stating they could never duplicate the issue. When clearly the whitish blue smoke pouring out of tailpipe and horrible combustion fumes inside cabin of car. At some point bluish smoke turned to black smoke and that when the $800 combustion test was suggested. Which they say will tell me if the engine is bad. How do they not know the signs of a bad engine. My car sat in service department for 2 months for them to say it's not covered under warranty. I tried everything to hold the manufacture responsible and they was unwilling to budge and help. The car has the extended warranty and my car was under the mileage and years. My car been sitting in my driveway since may 2024 needing a engine replacement. The fumes in cabin of vehicle was unbearable which cause me to have to drive with window down. Vehicle never show any warning lights when engine oil was low or empty. Another incident was with the radio not turning off even after the battery went died. The radio continue to work and connect to phone when battery was died. After charging battery radio would again kill battery and not shut off. The only way it would shut off is to disconnect radio. How dealer explained the issue was that of a modem. That the car probably need to be reset when radio was disconnected it worked. But after that it happen 3 more times. These cars need to be recalled and all customer should get there money back. To own a 2005 Santa Fe with over 216,000 miles with no oil burning / leaking or smoke out tailpipe say a lot on the manufacturing of this vehicle. I have no mechanical issues with this car and that was the reason I wanted to upgrade to 2017. Now I wish I had never brought the 2017. Beware before buying this brand because they are no good.

Engine failure occurred. Engine began making a knocking noise. The check engine light failed to initiate. No warning lights of any kind came on.

Failure Date: 05/22/2023

On may 2023, while my husband was taking my daughter to go to school with 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe, he noticed engine knocking noises emanating from the engine compartment. Shortly after, the vehicle's performance significantly deteriorated, and the check engine light illuminated on the dashboard, and the engine shut down. Get the car towed to the nearest auto service, the mechanic told me that there’s an engine failure as result of abnormal oil consumption causing internal damage and need to be fixed by Hyundai. I called Hyundai USA, and was told that in order to have it covered under the warranty, it needed to be repaired by an authorized dealer. However, no authorized dealer had an available appointment for at least 2 months. Finally after 2 months, I had the car towed to the authorized Hyundai service center for diagnosis and repairs. Upon examination by the certified technicians at the Hyundai service center, I was informed that it needs and engine replacement that will cost around $20,000. I called Hyundai corporation and had escalated my case to the case manager, but the manager never called back to give me an update. Their customer service department is also frustrating to deal with. They just sort of repeat the same phrases over and over again rather than having any sort of actual conversation with you. It's been more than 2 months after the incident and they finally they can’t do anything about it because it’s outside of warranty. It’s very frustrating.

This car has oil consumption issues due to a manufacturer defect, design of the engine 2. 4l. This has been on going for the last three years and is getting worse. Now is affecting the catalytic converter because of it burning so much oil. The Hyundai dealership will do nothing for me. Now they want $4,500 for a new catalytic converter. I can’t afford a new car and this should be an expense of Hyundai. In my research I have found there are thousands of cars on the road with this issue. They knew about this years ago and just kept making the cars and selling them . They should be helping me and all they are doing is denying that this has a problem. What recourse do I have. Why hasn’t there been a recall?.

The panoramic sunroof on our 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe unexpectedly and without warning, exploded during a leisurely drive through our town this morning. At a speed not exceeding 40 mph, we were suddenly met with a loud, gunshot like sound that instantly frightened us. We immediately put our hazards on and pulled off to the side of the road to find that the sunroof had completely shattered. Thank goodness we had just closed the sun shade or else our three year old and family pet would have been covered in glass shards, shards that would have most definitely caused serious injuries had that sun shade not been closed. We were on a paved road where no other vehicles were present, leaving no chance for a rock or any sort of debris to have impacted the vehicle. There has been no prior glass work done on the sunroof and we have not experienced any sort of major temperature differential in our area recently. There were no chips or hairline cracks present prior to this incident. We have contacted our insurance company but are waiting to file a claim until we reach out to the dealership (it is currently a Sunday and all dealerships are closed here). Had we been on a major highway or road, this could have most definitely caused an accident as the noise was incredibly loud and shocking. Again, what is most concerning is the fact that had we not just closed the sun shade, our toddler could have been seriously injured by the glass shards.

My vehicle is consuming oil at an unacceptable rate. I have to put oil in it weekly and the oil indicator light doesn’t work. It has been ongoing since I purchased it and the Hyundai service center said it was carbon build up which they had cleaned. It cost me over $500 and didn’t solve the issues. It also doesn’t always want to shift gears and feels like it’s starting to go into limp mode. Which I had to have my vehicle towed last year and they said it was spark plugs. I am extremely disappointed and regret getting this “certified” vehicle.

Hyundai corporate's engines on some vehicles has oil dissipating out of thin air. 2 to 3 quarts of oil can vanish between regular interval oil changes. Hyundai is lying saying that this is "normal. " it is not. The other issue is the oil indicator light may just pop on and off but it does not stay on when the vehicle has several quarts of oil that dissipated not warning the driver they have a serious problem. This leads to a safety concern because the vehicle could just stop working because the driver has no idea the oil is low. I urge the NHTSA to take action on this since so many vehicles with Hyundai are affected. Thank you.

My ex and I purchased a 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe limited ultimate 3. 3l engine. We always took the vehicle to the dealership for any and all services. We paid off our loan on the vehicle mid 2022. In December of 2022, the vehicle died. No warning lights or signs of damage. Beginning of 2023 I had the vehicle towed to the dealership. I was told that the engine needed replaced. After researching, I discovered 420 of the same vehicle had been under recall campaign 168. I believe wholeheartedly that my VIN was missed during this recall, as the engine in my vehicle died for the exact same reason as the other 420 vehicles. This is a recall! I’ve been in contact with Hyundai and told that because the vehicle is no longer under “warranty”, it will not be covered. However, federal law says that any vehicle with a recall is covered for 15 years after the first purchase of the vehicle. I did approve repairs because when you pay off a vehicle, you hope that the corporate office of Hyundai will honor the contract of following through with recalls. I’m in the process of getting disability. Im having surgery on my back Nov. 2nd. I’ve been diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder this year and have many follow up appts and physical therapy that I have not been able to make the appts due to not having a vehicle. In April, my ex was going through some mental health issues and kicked me out. I’ve been staying at a family members airbnb but it’s 1 hour away from all of my doctors. I feel that Hyundai is not honoring the recall because they missed my VIN during their initial inspections of the defective parts. Many other complaints of engine issues have been posted on the ntsb website along with my own. A Hyundai rep that I spoke to today suggested I contact the bbb in hopes there is something you could help me with. I feel this is a huge disruption in my life as I should be focusing on my health, however I have no means of transportation, even after paying off the car. VIN:km8srdhf3hu190083.

Car began to smoke from engine compartment. Stopped car in a driving lane on interstate 78 where construction barriers had closed both shoulders. Car then burst into flames. Starting in September 2022 the paint is peeling in several areas of 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe with 36,000 miles. I have called many dealers around my area and no one will address this issue. All local Hyundai dealers refuse to address the recall . I called Hyundai corporate on several occasions and they refused to help me with this issue. I was told to find a dealer willing to paint it. There are not dealers with a Hyundai certified body shop that will paint it under the warranty. Hyundai sent a letter on Feb 13, 2023 stating the have extended the warranty but I am unable to get a dealer to repaint my peeling vehicle. Hyundai has refused to help me with this issue and told me if I cant find someone I will have to pay out of pocket for the paint to be fixed.

Just received another letter from Hyundai (first one in Feb. /March this one in June) telling me about the same problem with the abs system and how it might short out and cause an engine fire. Still no remedy! the letter said I'd receive a second notice . . . I guess they meant a third notice! what's taking so long to find a fix??? I'm supposed to be confident taking this vehicle on a trip knowing it may short out and cause a fire at any time while driving or parked!?? this is not acceptable.

Purchased vehicle 6/2022 has had an electrical problem since day one randomly does not start and must be jumped. I have taken in 2 times only to be told there is nothing wrong. I called Hyundai corporate to see what steps I should take to resolve issues was told to take car in a third time and again told nothing wrong. A new battery was placed two months after my purchase date. And again this past February and issues still exist. Was given two option should problem not be resolved 1) buy back vehicle 2) replace with different vehicle. Both options have been withdrawn. Explanation car has been on the road to long. I put $13500 down and have made payments for 2 years. There is still $12000 on the loan. Is there anything I can do to recoup at least my down-payment. I am a senior on social security and a part time job in which I am a caregiver and do not feel safe driving this vehicle. I and do not have a down payment to trade the car in. I do not want the vehicle there are other issues starting and with a parasitic draw there are bound to be additional issues down the road. Can you help please. Expected resolutionhyundai take car back and return my down payment so I can purchase a reliable vehicle o additionally just recently discovered vehicle was in 2 accidents which this information was never disclosed. I would not have purchased had I known.

My O2 sensor failed and is under my insurance investigation due to engine light that came on and upon inspection it was determined to have caught on fire under the vehicle. My safety and my children's were at risk potentially may have gone up in flames. Currently the insurance is pending review of any recalls for O2 sensor to determine if Hyundai is handling damages. At this time Hyundai has not taken responsibility.

Failure Date: 04/25/2022

I own a Hyundai Santa Fe sport 2017 white pearl. On April 25th, 2022 I drove non-stop for a couple of hours. The car never before showed any symptoms and it is always parked in my indoor garage. When I left home it was in perfect condition and then when I reached the destination the hood had several paint peelings. I went to Hyundai philpott in nederland, TX and they told me that they are aware of this problem and that I should wait for a recall to be made since many cars like mine were having the same issue (especially the white ones).

64 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 04/20/2022

There is no incident that happened, but I am very upset with Hyundai. I found out about a recall on the news back in February and all that was said was to not park your car in a garage because it might catch on fire. It took Hyundai until late March to tell me there was a recall on my car. My local dealership told me about the recall and to schedule a service appointment. I thought, great, there is a solution. Come to find out, there is not yet. I think it is disgraceful to have a car that could catch fire and all I am being told is that I shouldn't park it in the garage. However, the recall says that it could catch on fire while I am driving too, so should I not drive it? how long is this going to go on? I am extremely upset with Hyundai corporation. This is a big safety risk. I am a single mom and this is my only form of transportation.

65 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 04/05/2022

There was no incident. I was in a chat with an NHTSA agent regarding the fact that the manufacturer has not provided a resolution. Until recently, your site indicated a date of 4/5 to correct this problem. I rec'd my first notice from the manufacturer on 4/4. It merely advised that there was a recall. No fix was given. I came back to NHTSA's website to see if there was any update. There was none, except the 4/5 date was no longer given. I then started a chat. The agent on the chat said everything was left up to the manufacturer. This is listed as an "urgent" recall, yet the manufacturer has provided no intended resolution for over two months. I asked the agent how I could file a complaint. She gave me this web address. As I stated, there has been no incident, yet.

I bought a 2017 Santa Fe sport October 26, 2020. The engine has been burning oil and over the past year, I have taken the vehicle to a local dealer to be looked. After multiple oil consumption tests in which there was on average of 1. 5 quarts burned off in 1000 miles, the vehicle had the pistons taken out to remove excess carbon. This helped a little bit. After another round of 3 oil consumption test, in which my average oil burn is now . 75 quarts/1000 miles, the dealer says that is considered normal. Really? by my calculations, my engine will burn 2. 78 quarts of oil over the 3700 miles between oil changes. That cannot be right. How can that be good for the engine?.
