The fuel gauge fluctuates and is not accurate. After filling up the gas tank, the fuel gauge may show "empty", and it rises and falls very quickly. This can occur when driving straight, turning, or when parked while the vehicle is turned on. There is no way to accurately tell how much fuel is left in the tank. This faulty fuel gauge could leave any Santa Fe motorist and their passengers stranded in a dangerous area(e. G. Busy highway) or condition(e. G. Blizzard or heat wave in arizona). Please initiate a recall to have this fixed. Per online sources, many Santa Fe owners in this year range have this same broken fuel gauge.

The fuel gauge fluctuates and the check engine light comes on. Problem is intermittent. Can occur anytime, but mostly after filling the gas tank. Vehicle can be stationary or moving. Has been occurring for at least a year.
2003 Hyundai Santa Fe, 180k miles, 2nd owner. My vehicle is leaking gas from the fuel tank onto the ground. I can't even park my vehicle in my garage or driveway due to the possibility that it will catch on fire. I searched online and found out the vehicle was one that has had a warranty extension on the fuel tank, which is 15 years or 150,000 miles whichever comes first. My fuel light was on indicating my fuel level was low. I live 15 miles away from the nearest Hyundai dealer so I was taking it in to have it inspected by a certified Hyundai dealer. I filled up my tank with $7. 00 of gas ($2. 70/gal). After fueling I got into my car and started the car. I noticed the fuel gauge had not moved after fueling. I proceeded to fill up the car until full. Since it is not safe because I can see the file leaking, I cannot park on my property and parked on the street, as far away from other houses. It did not feel safe on a public street, in a residential neighborhood, just sitting there because the possibility of it catching on fire and exploding in flames. What if a driver flicked out a cigarette and it rolled under my vehicle, catching it and anything around it on fire? I attempted to take it to the dealership, after filling it with a full tank of gas. While driving to the dealership, the vehicle started loosing power. I pulled off onto the nearest exit and it died, oil light, battery light, check engine light came on (etc). Cars behind me where honking during rush hour traffic. Able to get it started again and decided to try to get home again. Vehicle lost power again & died, this time not restarting, even after sitting 12 hours. I called a tow truck and had it towed to the dealer. Hyundai is stating I am outside of the miles allowance. Why is this not a mandatory recall? this is a public safety hazard even when parked! time/mileage shouldn't matter. Many others like mine.

After filling gas tank the fuel gauge went to empty and the check engine light came on. Bad fuel sensor.
After filling my tank to full, a few minutes later while at a light, my gas light came on indicating low on fuel almost empty. Check engine light came on, went out, came on for few days. Took car to service at Hyundai and was told that fuel sensors are bad and need to be replaced. Will cost almost $800. Service said that this has been a common occurrence in the 2008 Santa Fe's. And, apparently, none if it is warranted. Did some research online and learned that many are complaining of the same thing. Why has this not been recalled? this is very dangerous and puts owner of car in a position to be taken advantage of by dealer. Frustrated!!! also, light is off for a while, then comes back on when driving and stationary.
Fuel gauge not working properly. Goes to empty when I put gas in to fill tank and fuel light comes on. After driving a few miles, needle on gauge fluctuates. Then check engine light comes on. I ran out of gas while trying to enter into traffic on highway and almost got ran over , almost causing a serious accident. Extremely dangerous situation! my mechanic just replaced both fuel sensors on 4/29/2019 as check engine readout indicated. This costly repair did not fix the problem. The fuel gauge still fluctuates, reads empty when filling, fuel light comes on and now check engine light is on again. This is a serious safty proplem and should be recalled by Hyundai. I am afraid now when driving my car because of this. Is Hyundai not recalling because they know even when replaced, the new parts are faulty too? NHTSA, you need to please step in before someone gets seriously hurt or killed. You have plenty of complaints of this problem and I feel I just wasted my money on this repair.
The fuel sensor/gauge reads as empty all the time no matter how much gas is in the tank, this includes after filling up. This causes the check engine light to come on as well. Although this is not a direct safety issue, after researching on line it is clear that this issue has been going on for several model years of this car. If you went by the number of complaints on this site, it might not look like much but an internet search would indicate otherwise. For some people this can be a safety issue due to problems when legitimately running out of gas on a major highway and in traffic without knowing the issue. The manufacturer should not be allowed to have this consistent and ongoing problem with no recourse.
After having recall service completed on gas tank area, ( flvv pump fuel replaced on Jan 11th 2018) I noticed after filling the vehicle with fuel to full capacity, a very strong odor of fuel is present on the exterior of the car when I park it inside an enclosed area (garage). This gasoline smell persists until I use 1/8th of the tank by driving. Hyundai dealer service inspected and stated it is a "small leak as a history code and performed evap. Service bay test pass. Actuated purge valve and found it sticking. Ordered valve". I am waiting for part per dealer to be installed upon availability.

Fuel gage always changes levels. Constantly making the low gas light to turn on even after filling the gas tank up at the gas station. Its very dangerous to not know where you gas level is when many use the Santa Fe as their family car to transport their children. Its been happening the past week.

The gas sensor is malfunctioning. Cause the tank to show out of gas when there is at least a half a tank in it. This has also caused the check engine light to come on and off whenever it wants to. I would travel to get it check only for the light to be off. I am unable to safely drive with out filling up my tank every couple of day to ensure that I actually have gas. It is causing the car to be slow in starting after a light or when trying to merge with traffic, hitting the gas does not really do much. It's a danger on the road. In doing a quick google search while trying to determine what the issue might be - it seems this is a wide spread and known Hyundai problem that hasn't been addressed becuase there has not been a loss of life. It shouldn't have ot get that far to prevent what is an obvious and widespread issue.
Fuel gauge problem: when filling the car, the fuel gauge in the car will show empty, empty light is on despite filling the car with plenty of gas. Additionally, in 2009 my car stopped suddenly while we were on a bridge in 4 lanes of traffic. The fuel tank had to be pulled and replaced. Now, when I'm driving(knowing that I have enough fuel to continue) the fuel gauge is not registering properly and will 'wag' between full and empty. Dangerous!.
Check engine light is on and gas gauge shows empty even after filling up tank. The problem started at around 100,000 miles ( give or take) mechanic said it the fuel sensor on driver's side as per electronic reading. A recall must be issued for this dangerous defect. Its plain to see its a common issue. I already ran out of gas during my morning commute on nyc westside highway & fdr drive, I literally almost died the 1st time it happened.
The fuel gauge does not read correctly unless the tank is 100% full. Even then it occasionally will read incorrectly. When filling the tank it occasionally shuts off as if full despite not being full. This is a major issue because it is impossible to tell how much gas is in the tank at any given time which is a safety concern when driving long distances.
After filling my gas tank, the fuel gauge on my 2009 Santa Fe would read empty and the low fuel light would illuminate. In addition, the "check engine" light came on. After driving a few miles the fuel gauge would fluctuate between empty and half full. The mechanic checked the onboard computer and the code said it was the fuel sensors. He replaced both of them, at a cost of $500, and it seems to have solved the problem. Mileage was slightly under 100,000 miles.
Faulty gas gauge. After filling up to a full gas tank, gas gauge will go up and down and eventually stop at an incorrect reading. This happens whether the vehicle is stationary or in motion. I never know how much gas I have which is incredibly unsafe and dangerous!!! when the gauge gets below half a tank, the check engine light will come on. This has been happening for months and now the check engine light will not turn off at all no matter how much gas the car has. Then, car started to smell like gas inside when driving on the highway. Took to Hyundai dealership to fix and was quoted over $1,000. This vehicle should be recalled, the gas gauge issue is a safety issue because someone could run out of gas and be stranded.
Fuel guage shows false reading, engine light comes on when tank is filled and shows empty reading. Guage will start rising after many miles (one hundred or more). Fuel guage will drop to empty. Car is stationary when filling, but giving false readings when moving anywhere. We never know when we are going to run out of gas. This is a safety issue and should be recalled!.
After filling vehicle with fuel, fuel gauge showed tank empty and yellow light on dash shows fuel empty. Fuel gauge recovered to show 1/2 full, then displays erratic results. Online forums show defective fuel sensor with a large number of Hyundai vehicles. There should be recall on this issue. Drivers may think they have sufficient fuel, to then have vehicle run out of gas in a dangerous driving environment.
The gauge on the fuel tank has stopped operating and doesn't accurately show how much fuel is in the tank. After filling up the gas tank the empty light comes on intermittently. This happens randomly when the car is in motion. The fuel gauge moves up and down and the check engine light has come on and stays on.
After filling the gas tank, the gas gauge read empty, along with the low-fuel warning light. After driving approximately 10 miles, the gauge then appeared to be functioning normally. The gauge continues to malfunction if the gas tank is filled. When the tank is below half full, the gauge will randomly read empty or half full. An internet search quickly revealed that many owners are experiencing this problem. I hope Hyundai will initiate a safety recall too correct the issue.
When the gas tank is less than half full, the fuel gauge displays tank as nearly empty and the amber low fuel light appears. The check engine warning light also comes on. The fuel gauge swings back up to nearly half full, drops down to 1/4 full, then drops down to almost empty, then swing back to half full. After filling the tank the fuel gauge is once again accurate until the tank goes below 1/2 full. . This is a fuel sensor issue with the two sensors in the gas tank. I'm going to have to reset the odometer every time I fill up and make sure I fill up the tank every 300-325 miles. I've done my research and this is a known, widespread issue with the 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe vehicles. I saw many complaints about this issue filed on the nhsta so this agency is well aware of the issue but has chosen not to recall the Santa Fe for the 2008 model year. I don't understand this: this is a safety issue as well as a gross design and manufacturing problem with this vehicle.
Leaving my home to travel out of town, the engine light came on. After having a diagnostic test completed I was told the sensors in the gas tank are malfunctioning (p0464) and this is a known issue with 2007 Hyundai sante fe models. The gauge telling me how much gas I have is not reading correctly due to the sensor malfunction and can cause me to run out of gas at any time. The dealer refuses to do anything about it without charging me a $98 "diagnostic fee" even though the diagnostic was done elsewhere. I have an extended warranty on this vehicle but they refuse to honor that as well.
The fuel level gauge changes randomly. Check engines codes p0463, p0464, p2068 indicates a fuel level sensor failure. This is issue has occurred on other car manufacturers potentially using the same sensor system. There have been no recalls issued for this problem. The owner will not be able to know the accurate fuel level of the vehicle. This may cause tank overfilling and potentially safety and environmental issues. This is very expensive to repair ($1000) and is not covered by Hyundai after the 5 year warranty.
Once the gas gage reaches 1/4 full, it goes to empty. After filling with gas, it will take over 1 hour to record a full tank. Cannot use the gage as we are never sure how much gas is in the tank. The engine light also appears and stays on until the gas sensor records full.
Filled tank, however, it did not register and tank showed empty. Eventually it went back up and seemed fine; about two weeks ago it did the same thing, showed empty after fully filling the tank. Just this week hit 50k miles, way too early for things to go wrong. Surprised at the # of other consumers affected by this disturbing malfunction. It appears it just a matter of time before this happens again. Concerned with safety as well as emission issues. Highly disappointed Hyundai has done nothing about this problem!!! in addition to the above we have had to replace a motor in the locking mechanism and the back seat (both)pockets have broken/come unglued, again, at just now 50k miles. Not impressed.
The fuel gauge started bouncing from full to empty and we keep our tank above half most of the time. We went in to our local dealer and they said it is "normal" for fuel sensors to go out this early. Upon further pressing they said that it is happening on a lot of the Santa Fe's, but there was no recall at this time. 500-600 dollars to replace the sensors. For now we are just running it while filling up every time and keeping track of our mileage. These need to be recalled and fixed.
After filling the gas tank at the pump and then starting the engine, I noticed that the dashboard fuel gauge indicated empty, with the "low fuel" indicator light on. Driving around for 5 miles did nothing to move the needle. After a day or so the gauge slowly worked its way up to register a full tank. This same problem re-occurred several times over 6-8 weeks, making it very difficult to know how much fuel was actually in the gas tank. At one point the "check engine" indicator came on and stayed on for a day and a half before turning off. Upon taking the car to the Hyundai dealership and explaining the problem, I was told immediately, before they even inspected the car, exactly what was wrong. The service manager said it was the fuel level sensors and that they've replaced "hundreds". . . "it's a common problem with Hyundais". Replacing two sensors cost a jolting $650, but I couldn't ignore the safety risk of never knowing when, where, and how I might run out of gas. When I asked why there hasn't been a recall issued, the sales manager said that there has to be a "safety issue" involved.
The gas gauge on our Santa Fe stopped working right after filling the tank to full. After driving for about 50 miles or so, the gauge will slowly rise to about 3/4 full but will drop back down if the SUV sits in idle for any time longer than 3 minutes. It will also fluctuate greatly after it hits 1/2 a tank of gas. For example, it will go from having over 1/4 of a tank to showing no gas and the gas light being on after one shut off and restart. The check engine light is consistently on in our vehicle now and I never know how much gas I truly have in my SUV. It now causes me to question the safety and reliability of the vehicle. We have loved our Santa Fe up until this point and are very disappointed in the large expense to have it fixed when it seems to be trend in the Santa Fe's that were made around the time of ours. This is now the second issue that we have had with the Hyundai brand related to a faulty part that causes an expensive fix. As a mother of a young child and currently expecting our second child, I am now reconsidering sticking with the Hyundai brand for future family vehicles. Hyundai needs to make this right or it will certainly cause families like mine to buy another brand going forward.
Fuel gauge and fuel sensor not working properly. The gauge registers less fuel than is in the tank. The gauge will indicate that the tank is empty when there's more than 1/2 a tank left, and the malfunction indicator light comes on. The issue occurs sporadically. It will register a false reading for several consecutive days with the warning light on even after filling up the gas tank, and then some days it will self correct and the warning light will turn off.
(2008 Hyundai Santa Fe) the vehicle gas gauge is sticking on empty after filling it up and the check engine light comes on. After 1/4 tank of gas has been consumed the gas gauge will read normal. The check engine light will also go off. There has not been a loss in power to the engine or any other indicators that there is a problem. This issue can be reproduced every time after fill up. The tank does not have to be on empty to reproduce the problem. I have seen TSB's for the 2007 model but nothing yet for the 2008.
The fuel gauge in my 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe is not functioning properly. Upon filling up it goes to empty with the low fuel light indicator. After driving 40-60 mile the gauge may read 1/4-3/4 tank. Other times it drops to empty and will not move. I am the original owner and the mileage is 75,000.
I have 2009 Santa Fe. This happened first time in February 2014 that I was filling gas (I always do full) and as I started leaving the gas station my fuel gauge showed empty. I went back to the gas station and ask the attendant that there is a mistake, my tank is not full it is empty. But I was wrong, because he told me there is no way the pump machine will lie and he fills 100s of vehicle per day from each of his machine. Just to double check, the next filling I used a different gas station and it happened again. Now this has become routine and since my last two visit at pump, even the check engine light is coming on now. I have to wait few days and mileage to put on that the check engine will go off but the fuel gauge will still show less than half the tank. At this moment, I know my car and can predict with some degree of certainty about the mileage my car will provide but as the car ages and other things in the engine ages, it will become more difficult to predict the gas level. So I might be in trouble stranded on highway or in city during rush hour. Also I found online that this is not just my problem, many of other Santa Fe had similar issues. Therefore, I thought I should also share my experience here.
After filling tank gauge showed empty and check engine light on. Not sure of. How much gas I have, safety issue.
Faulty fuel gage. The fuel gage will register empty and the fuel light will come on after filling up the tank. The gage will waver and give faulty registers while driving, even climbing back to full after registering "empty" seconds before.
Fuel gauge intermittently fluctuates from empty to 1/4 tank. Digital display also not registering. After a few months of this, now the check engine light has come on and after diagnostic test it showed fuel sensors not working. Gas gauge not working at all at this point, becoming quite a concern because we never know exactly how much gas is left and finding that we are filling it up every other day just to be safe!.
